3.0 NATURAL GAS
3.1 Natural Gas Production and Utilization: In March, 2006, nine (9) Oil Producing Companies produced 177.842 billion Standard Cubic Feet (Bscf) of natural gas. Compared with the February, 2006, figure of 164.689 Billion Standard Cubic Feet (Bscf), there was an increase of 13.153 Bscf
5
or 7.987%. Out of the quantity produced (excluding Shell’s figure of 57,945,700 mmscf), 51.849 Bscf or 43.25% was flared, while 68.037 Bscf or 56.75% was utilized. Out of the total quantity utilized, 26.628 Bscf was re-injected, 25.906 Bscf was for NLNG as LNG feedstock and 3.174 Bscf was sold to third parties. The Oil Producing Companies used 5.295 Bscf as fuel gas and 2.005 Bscf as gas lift to enhance condensate production. EPCL took 4.186 Bscf and 0.738 Bscf for LPG/NGL feedstock and fuel gas respectively. No report on gas utilized and flared from Shell’s gas production (see Table 7).
3.2 Federal Government Receipts from Gas Export: The sum of US$30.080 million was earned from export sales of 37,889.39million BTU of LNG Feedstock in March 2006. The sale represents Federal Government Equity Shares in Shell, Elf and Agip Joint Ventureship. (see Table 6b and Figure 3b).
3.3 Nigeria Gas Company (NGC) Gas Sales and Transmission: A total of 12.0438 Billion Standard Cubic Feet (BSCF) of natural gas was sold locally to companies by NGC in March 2006 for N 961.39 million. However, actual revenue received by NGC within the month was N 516.950 million which includes part payment of previous months’ outstanding debts. The Company also transmitted 0.2740 Million Standard Cubic Feet of natural gas for N 95.754 million. Actual revenue received during the month was N 45.990 million including part payment of previous months’ outstanding debts (see Table 8a & 8b).
3.4 Joint Venture Domestic Gas Sales: Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) sold 10.284 Billion Standard Cubic Feet (Bscf) of natural gas for N 320.060 million on behalf of Joint Venture. (NNPC 55%, Shell 30%, Elf 10% and Agip 5%). (See Table 9a).
3.5 Joint Venture Export Gas Sales: Shell exported a total of 36.499 Billion Standard Cubic Feet
(Bscf) of natural gas as feedstock to NLNG at a total sum of US$28.630 million in March, 2006 (See Table 9b).
4.0 REFINERY OPERATIONS 4.1 Crude Oil Balance: In March 2006, the three local refineries (KRPC, PHRC and WRPC) had
274,506 mt of crude oil as opening stock and received 491,884 mt of crude oil into their systems, including foreign crude oil (Bashra Light). Total available crude oil meant for processing, therefore, stood at 766,390 mt. Out of this 489,033 mt of crude oil was processed into petroleum products. Closing stock at the end of the month was 277,357 mt of crude oil. Average throughput for each refinery in metric tons per day was: KRPC – 1,084, PHRC – 14,692 and WRPC – 0.00; (see Table 10); thus leaving their respective capacity utilization for the month as 7.22%, 51.30% and 0.00%. (See figure 5). The low capacity utilization for KRPC and zero for WRPC was as a result of vandalized crude oil pipeline at Escravos.
4.2 Production Returns: The refineries – KRPC, PHRC and WRPC produced 483,265 mt of
intermediate and finished products as against 549,906 mt evacuated by PPMC. The Drum Plant in KRPC produced 1,056 lube oil drums and out of this 1,650 drums were evacuated during the month. The low production of Lube Oil drum was due to stock out of Body Coil.
4.3 Refinery Fuel and Loss: The refineries recorded 52,270mt of products as refinery fuel and loss,
which was 9.28% of the total crude processed. Out of this refinery fuel and loss statistics,
6
43,441mt (7.67%) was used as fuel, while 3,109 mt (0.61%) was flared. The remaining 5,720mt (1.11%) was recorded as losses (See Table 14).
5.0 DOMESTIC PETROLEUM PRODUCTS DISTRIBUTION:
The Major and Independent Petroleum Products Marketing Companies distributed a total of 943.28 million litres of different petroleum products in March 2006. This showed an increase of 127.53 million litres or 15.63% when compared with the total volume distributed in February 2006 (813.24 million litres). The Major Petroleum Products Marketing Companies sold 631.82 million litres (66.98% of the total sales) of petroleum products, while the Independent Petroleum Products Marketing Companies sold the remaining 311.46 million litres (33.02% of the total sales). In the petroleum products distribution slate, Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) had the highest figure of 648.25 million litres (68.72% of the total) reflecting average daily sales of 20.91 million litres. Automotive Gas Oil (AGO) was second with total sales figure of 132.50 million litres (14.05%) averaging 4.27 million litres per day while Dual Purpose Kerosine (DPK) came third with total 66.65 million litres (7.07%) giving an average daily sales of 2.15 million litres. (Tables 15, 16 and 17 refer). This report does not include fuel figures from Mobil Oil Nigeria PLC as soon as their figures are made available, this report will be updated accordingly.
