Marty Isaksen Principal Nightcliff Middle School Principals Report Important Dates This has been a whirl wind year, that has gone so fast, but where we have achieved so much. I know that by naming specific activities there is always ones that will be missed but it is worth reflecting on what we have accomplished. There has been a strong focus on technology this year with our students competing in The Robocup Challenge, Darwin Science and Engineering Challenge, Lego League Hydrodynamics Challenge and the Tournament of Minds and this is on top of our Tekkos club. The Arts have also featured prominently, with the school choir and dance group performing at the Beat festival, we had performers at the Seabreeze Festival, the wonderful Year 8 and 9 productions, and the Year 9 music class producing a CD of original songs. Our students participated in our athletics and swimming carnivals, a range of interschool sports, as well as individual students representing the NT in sports such as cricket, squash, swimming and surf lifesaving. We had Fiesta, a talent competition and we won the middle yearschess competition. Our School NAPLAN results were very good. When we look at this years Year 9 data and compare it to when they were in year 7 we see an increase of students in the top 20% in Reading Writing and Numeracy and a decrease in students at the lower end across the 3 tests. The school mean increased across each of the tests with a significant increase in writing and numeracy. I would particularly like to acknowledge and thank the staff who sit quietly behind many of these achievements. I would like to acknowledge the support of our local member, Natasha Fyles who is a strong advocate for the school. I would also like to thank the School Council chair Jo Minkiewicz and the other members of the council who also work tirelessly to support the schools improvement agenda. I would like to thank, Justine Davis and Anita Isma Both have been council members for many years but are retiring at the end of this year. Although I have only been able to share your journey for the last year, I have seen a group of students grow into fine young adults who are ready to step into the next level of their education. I see a group of students who are able to make strong choices. There are many things that we have no choice over, how tall we are, the colour of our skin or how intelligent we are but we can make choices about kindness, generosity and how we treat others. I believe that the Nightcliff Middle School values will help you as you navigate life because they enable you to make good choices. If Care, Acceptance, Respect, Responsibility and Success underpin the choices that you make it will help you steer a positive path through life. There are no magic answers to what life will throw at you. You can google the population of Darwin or the Brownlow medallist from 1972 but you cant google the answers to the choices that you will have to make in the future. However, as I look at you I see a group of students who will google what is in your hearts and what is in your head to make those good choices. To the Year 9s, enjoy high school and enjoy whatever path you choose to follow in the years to come. Take time to recharge your batteries over the holiday break before the next big challenge begins. I hope everyone has an enjoyable break and look forward to 2018 Have a Merry Christmas and a safe New Year. Principal’s Report

Important Dates

This has been a whirl wind year, that has gone so fast, but where we have achieved so much. We had Fiesta, a talent competition and we won the middle years’ chess competition.

Our School NAPLAN results were very good. When we look at this year’s Year 9 data and compare it to when they were in year 7 we see an increase of students in the top 20% in Reading Writing and Numeracy and a decrease in students at the lower end across the 3 tests. The school mean increased across each of the tests with a significant increase in writing and numeracy. I would particularly like to acknowledge and thank the staff who sit quietly behind many of these achievements.

I would like to acknowledge the support of our local member, Natasha Fyles who is a strong advocate for the school. I would also like to thank the School Council chair Jo Minkiewicz and the other members of the council who also work tirelessly to support the school’s improvement agenda.

You can google the population of Darwin or the Brownlow medallist from 1972 but you can’t google the answers to the choices that you will have to make in the future.

I hope everyone has an enjoyable break and look forward to 2018

Have a Merry Christmas and a safe New Year.
