“Father Mac,” right, as he is most commonly called, even though he was made a Monsignor in 2010, will celebrate his Golden Jubilee Mass on Sunday, June 2 at noon at St. Bernardine Catholic Church in Woodland Hills.

He has invited all those whose lives have crossed his in 50 years. He sees this mass as a time to thank them and pray for the Lord’s blessings on them.

Macnamara entered the Seminary in Tipperary, Ireland, right after high school at age 18. Ordained six years later in 1969 and after seven weeks of vacation he came to the Los Angeles Archdiocese by his own choice, inspired by a priest uncle who was already here.

He served in seven parishes from the Wilshire area to East LA, Inglewood, Granada Hills, Canyon Country, Chatsworth and finally spent 16 years at St. Bernardine’s in Woodland Hills.

Retiring almost two years ago from administration, he continues in ministry, volunteering at Holy

Cross Hospital, helping Rancho San Antonio and parishes who request his help. He will celebrate the Baccalaureate Mass for Louisville High School this Friday plus weddings, funerals, visits to the sick and baptisms for all who ask him. In retirement he does not miss meetings or maintenance of facilities and staff. His biggest surprise in retirement is that his golf game has not improved!

Bob Saget, left, the actor and writer best known known for “Full House” (1987), “Entourage” (2015) and “Dumb and Dumberer,” is Honorary Chair of Valley Village’s “Showtime!”

Showtime is a comedy luncheon and garden party with live music, drawings and auctions benefiting 400 individuals with development challenges served through Valley Village. The event stars Tehran Von Ghasir and is hosted by Sunda Croonquist. It will be held beginning at 10 am on June 22 at the Airtel Plaza Hotel, 7277 Valjean Avenue in Van Nuys. For tickets call 587-9450.

Los Angeles City Councilmember Paul Koretz took the oath of office to begin his first term representing the 5th District in 2009. How many business owners would complain if taxes were reduced? The United Chambers of Commerce, is not complaining about a bill that was discussed at their May Government Affairs meeting and has taken a position on SB349. The Senate Bill by Anthony Portantino of the 25th Senate district reduces the minimum franchise tax (MFT) for corporations having less than $15 million in gross receipts. Under the proposed bill the MFT will be a graduated tax with corporations that gross less than $2.5 million will see their tax at $200. For Corporations grossing between $2.5 million and $7.5 million, they will pay $400 and those corporations that gross between $7.5 and $15 million will be paying a $600 minimum franchise tax. The bill could have gone farther in reducing or widening the reach of the minimum tax burden, but a reduction in taxes is something that United Chambers of Commerce supports. The bill has passed three committees and is currently on the Senate floor for the third reading. We hope that it makes it to Governor Newsom’s desk to be signed into law. Also at the meeting, Jeffery Prang, LA County Assessor, provided a detailed explanation and insight to what the Proposition 13 split -roll’s impact will be if it passes next year. The facts and figures presented were very dramatic.

COMMUNITY BUSINESS

By Hank YuloffIn Los Angeles, there are

hundreds of trade shows every year and they are a great way for a business to generate leads and revenue. To get the most out of them, you have to be prepared to make an incredible impression. Here are seven ways to get ready.

Research the trade show. What organization is putting on the show? What is its mission? What benefits does it offer its members? You should know how your company fits in.

Plan who is going to be in your booth. It is amazing how many small business owners send their employees to the show but eschew the opportunities that having the owner be at the booth offers their company. If you are a sole proprietor, this is a good time to get a friend to help you.

Who is coming to the party? Who does that organization tell you will be coming to the show? What are their job titles? Do they match your target market? From where are they attending? Are they all local, or are they flying to the event? That makes a huge difference in the amount of time they spend at the show and how seriously they may take the event. Can you get a list of attendees from the organization? If so, you can contact them prior to the show and invite them to your booth. You can also invite them to meet you at a specific time for a private meeting.

Plan the look of your booth. You are going to have to get attendees to step over the magic line out of the aisle and into your booth or get them to step up to your table. Signage will need to be attractive to your clients.

Prepare your trade show speech. This would be your equivalent of an elevator pitch. Remember that you are going to have to get attendees to step over the invisible line out of the aisle and into your booth. Be brief and ask questions. LOTS of questions. I have a few favorites, including “how are you enjoying the show?” and “what would you need to find to consider your time invested here a success?”

Promote your attendance. Get on social media and email and even direct mail to let clients and potential clients know you are going to be at the show. This should not be a once or twice event. Promote it as soon as you take a booth and begin to reach out to potential clients and current clients in the area. Let them know why it would be a good show for them to attend. It shows that you have been paying attention to them in your meetings.

Finally, have your checklist prepared. We created a checklist

Getting Ready for a Trade Show? Helpful Hintsof over 50 important things you should have with you at the show. If you would like a checklist of all the important things you should have with you, send us an email at [email protected].

The First and Third Fridays of Every Month

Inspired by a bold new proposal from US Senator Kamala Harris, today Councilmember Bob Blumenfield launched “Equal Pay LA,” a new local effort, co-presented by Councilmember’s Monica Rodriguez, Mitch O’Farrell and Nury Martinez, to close the gender pay gap and hold bad actors accountable. Currently women in the United States are paid $0.80 cents to the dollar compared to what their male counterparts make and the burden of proof remains on the shoulders of the employee, rather than the employer.

“After hearing about Senator Harris’ proposal to hold corporations accountable for the gender pay gap, I knew Los Angeles should lead the way by

implementing her idea locally,” said Blumenfield. “We really need to have a paradigm shift where instead of a worker having to fight for what is right, we should hold corporations accountable for continuing this injustice. Though California has the lowest pay gap compared to other states, anything short of complete equality is unacceptable.”

According to a recent study on gender pay inequity from the National Partnership for Women and Families, the median annual pay for a woman who holds a full-time, year-round job is $41,977 while the median annual pay for a man who holds a full-time, year-round job is $52,146.

Pay discrepancy is abhorrent when the statistics are broken down by race. African American women are typically paid $0.61 cents, Native American women $0.58 cents and Latinas just $0.53 cents for every dollar paid to white men. Eliminating this pay gap could equate to more than a year of food, seven months of mortgage payments, ten months of rent or one year of tuition at a state college.

Senator Harris’ proposal outlines how companies would have to obtain an “Equal Pay Certification” and disclose pay data to the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. If a company is found to be paying workers with similar responsibilities different salaries based on gender, they will be fined 1% of their profits for

every 1% wage gap. Those fines would then be reinvested into programs such as paid family leave or medical leave. Blumenfield’s motion specifically directs Economic and Workforce Development Department and the City Attorney’s Office to explore avenues to apply Senator Harris’ proposal to hold businesses accountable on the

local level. This includes having local departments report back on options to implement a citywide equal pay law for employers with more than 100 employees, to ensure companies in Los Angeles verify their workers are not paid differently based on gender and using established enforcement mechanisms to expand worker protections.

Currently city ordinances prohibit employment discrimination due to race, ethnicity, religion, marital status among other protected classes, but no city law explicitly requires equal pay for equal work by employers. CA Labor Code § 1197.5 provides a right of action for an individual who

Instead of a worker having to fight for what is right, we should hold corporations accountable.

English ChannelBy Rodger Sterling

English Channel offers the best of the late editor Rodger Sterling’s columns that ran continuously in local papers

since 1968.

How many times do you have to be snookered by government officials until you begin to question the numerous tax increase proposals they say will rectify the many quality of life and educational issues facing all the people living in the City of Los Angeles and State of California?

Since we are experiencing the rising costs of living in Los Angeles as evidenced by the local gasoline prices in the $4.00 a gallon range, the elected and appointed government officials that represent us and tend to our needs as a society it does not matter to them if it is sales tax, property tax, gasoline tax, electric tax, water tax or any of the many other associated taxes we are all forced to pay each and every time we purchase or use products. It appears that the only answer public officials have to say to address any and all issue is more and higher taxes for everyone.

Fifty-one cities in and around the City of Los Angeles recently raised the sales tax for a variety of reasons. The increased taxes were supported by the majority and voted in by the residents of the cities. Places like San Fernando, Glendale, Burbank, Pasadena, Pomona and Culver City all increased their sales tax to 10.250%. It is hard to believe that it is less expensive to purchase goods in the City of Los

Rantz & Ravez from Dennis ZineAngeles than in the 51 cities with the 10.250% sales tax. But wait, I have more interesting news for you. If the voters in all the cities and neighborhoods served by the Los Angeles Unified School District vote YES on Measure EE on the June 4 special election, ALL property tax for both residential to commercial will increase .16 cents a square foot for the next 12 years, with a possible continuation for additional years as has been done with other tax measures. So, while Los Angeles City did not join the 51 neighboring

I have tried to understand the sample ballot of the “Full Text of Ballot Measure EE” and come to my own conclusions which I would appreciate if you shared.

The entire text of the measure appears nebulous. There are too many (wishful) comments with no specifics. There is no attempt to alleviate or correct the problems plaguing the LAUSD management.

For those that may be interested, peruse the various state issues (bonds passed for schools and schooling) from the past 20 years.

Letters to the Editor

Councilman Blumenfield wants to implement Kamala Harris’ ridiculous so-called equal pay proposal in Los Angeles. In a proposal reeking of government dictatorship, these two want to put even more burdens on businesses than already exist, in the form of demanding proof that a business has “gender equality” in pay.

Put yourself in the position of a business owner. If there’s a minimum number of employees to which this atrocity applies, as many businesses as possible will not reach that number. What does that do for jobs? What does that

ANNETTE PURSLEY 818.577.0550Certified With Years of Experience

By Sandy RosenholzSummer’s almost here in

Southern California when we have some of our hottest weather. No matter your age, wearing UV blocking sunglasses, a broad-brimmed hat and SPF (Sun Protection Factor) lotion when you’re out in the sun are musts. No one wants a burn or, worse yet, to develop skin cancer, but when you’re a senior (65+) you are more susceptible to dehydration, so it’s necessary to take extra precautions when you are in the sun.

What can seniors or the elderly do to protect themselves?

• Dress in clothing with a dense weave and in darker colors. It offers you the best defense against the sun.

• Stay in the shade. Avoid the sun from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm when the UV rays are the strongest.

• Apply a sun lotion with at least a 15 SPF within a half hour to an hour of going outside. If you’re going to be out in the sun for an extended period or in the water, use something with at least a 30 SPF to prevent burning. (FACT: Adults who have had four or more sunburns are more likely to develop melanoma.) Be sure to reapply your sun lotion every two hours and after you’ve gone swimming.

• Wear sunglasses. Choose sunglasses that block a high percentage of UV rays and wrap around the eye area.

• Avoid tanning booths. Tanning booths use UV radiation known to cause cancer. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, just

four visits to a tanning salon per year can increase your risk for melanoma by 11%, and for the two most common forms of skin cancer, basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma, by 15%.

• Drink plenty of fluids. To avoid dehydration drink six to eight glasses of water a day and eat fresh fruits and vegetables.

If you do get a sunburn or stay out in the sun for too long, try the following tips for some relief:

And by the way, what about those declaring themselves transgender or “non-binary?” Is the L.A. government going to forcibly declare them one gender or another?

Horrors! That wouldn’t be politically correct!

By Janey M. RifkinYou would have to go back

to the 19th century to find as much rainfall in the month of May in California as we have just experienced. Yes, folks, we just toppled the previous record for the month of May by passing the 3.25 inches recorded in 1889. And at this writing, more rain is on the way.

By the way, it happens to be two months after the end of winter, and rain, hail and snow have created more than five times as much precipitation as is usual for this time of year. The unusual weather pattern has also brought unusual below-average May temperatures with an increased number of windstorms. Frigid snow and windstorms, up to 40 mph, pelted parts of Southern California including Big Bear Lake. Near the end of May, elevations about 5,500 feet got up to an inch of snowfall – unheard of in the last 130 years!

The unusually rainy month comes on the heels of a rare wet winter which lifted California completely out of drought for the first time in nearly a decade according to the National Service. “It’s the jet stream” stated Bill Patzert, a local weather expert and former climatologist with the Jet Propulsion Laboratory. “This is May gray on steroids,” he commented.

What might be in store for us in the coming summer months is very hard to predict. The amounts of rain which have fallen lately are welcome, especially when delivered in small amounts at a time, as opposed to the deluges or record rainstorms, which are dangerous to people, animals, homes, crops, and the environment.

West Hills Neighborhood Council elections were held Sunday, May 19. Voter turnout was 445, the largest in the West Valley. Final results announced by the City Clerk’s office were as follows:

West Hills Neighborhood CouncilElected to the council

were Daniel Brin with 244 votes; Faye Barta with 240 votes; Aida Abkarians with 217 votes; Charlene Rothstein with 208 votes; Steve Randall with 206 votes; Bob Brostoff with

201 votes, Myrl Schreibman with 199 votes, Anthobny C. Scearce wiht 197 votes, Ronald Sobel with 180 votes, Bobbi Trantafello with 175 votes; Alec Uzemeck with 170 votes and Bonnie Klea with 137 votes.

Among them, propositions 98, 55, 111 and 30. Statewide the allocation for schools k12 through 14 has been 47 billion dollars allocated to the school and “children”. (14 being two years of Junior College)

Governor Newsom has recently proposed that amount for his new budget to be increased to 81 Billion dollars up from the present 47 Billion.

Those past bonds contained the same rhetoric as measure EE. Absolutely nothing has changed. LAUSD has utilized most of the funding on salaries, retirement and health benefits.

Just this year, a teacher strike yielded more help for the teachers, but little for the students. The arguments for the strike were the same as the arguments for measure EE. “This will be beneficial for the students and teachers, yet today they again propose the same rhetoric for the teachers, students and schools.

The entire text should be reviewed with the thought in mind that – It is not what they say, but what they do not say. “This is a typical lawyer tactic - obfuscate and mislead by omission.

Ergo per Definitions of Purposes in the text – What does “retaining and attracting “ mean. Thought they had

been doing this for years. What specifically are “necessary administrative services”?

Lawyers, retiree pensions and health? What is “lowering class size”. Where are the students supposed to go since “building or modernizing” schools was defined as “Funding ...may not be used for: Building or modernizing schools”

Item 7: This looks like a full no holds barred welfare statement. - Support low income students, support English learners, support the homeless and foster students– high need –low performing schools?

What has LASUD done with the money received in the past and what are they doing with the moneys being received now?

Accountability and oversightAudits are after the fact and at least 13 to 18 months after

funds have been disbursed. What accountability is proposed? LAUSD has the “Intent” for strict oversight. LASUD will not even make a comment until the measure has passed??

What will the oversight accomplish? Who will be held responsible for breach of fiscal misconduct? What will be the ramifications and penalties imposed?

The entire text and proposal appears as what might be misleading. Jack Welch, Canoga Park,

By Neill SimmonsThe highlight of June

comes on Tuesday night, June 18. There will be a double conjunction. Look west after sunset. The red planet, Mars, and the fastest planet, Mercury, will meet low in the west. We can see this great event with the naked eye, but it will look even better with binoculars. Later that same evening at about 11:45 pm the Moon will rise in the east with Saturn right next to it.

There will be a rocket launch on June 11 at Vandenberg Air Force Base. The rocket will be putting into orbit three very sophisticated satellites for Canada. These satellites will be watching Earth’s temperature in order to see how climate change is affecting our planet. This event will be visible to all of Southern California but the exact time has not been announced. Check either Nighttrek on Facebook or Vandenberg’s website for up-to-date information.

One of the great sights of June will be the noctilucent clouds. These are very high clouds that are 50 to 60 miles above Earth, which is nearly at the edge of outer space. Noctilucent clouds consist of ice crystals and are only visible during twilight. Noctilucent roughly means “night shining” in Latin. Anyone who has ever seen them agrees that they resemble something out of a science fiction movie.

The giant planet, Jupiter, shows up in the east after 10 pm in June. Jupiter has 79 moons. The four biggest moons are the Galilean moons after being discovered by Galileo in 1610 CE. These four moons are visible.

June’s full Moon on the 17th is known as the Strawberry Moon according to

the Old Farmer’s Almanac. The strawberry flower first appears in April and fully matures in June. This full Moon originally got its name from the Algonquin tribes in eastern North America who knew it as a signal to gather the ripening fruit of wild strawberries. In Europe, it is known as the Rose Moon.

a snake in his talons as proof. Apollo, realizing this was a lie, flung the crow (Corvus), the cup (Crater), and the snake (Hydra) into the sky. He further punished the wayward bird by ensuring it would forever be thirsty, since Crater the cup is just out of reach.

A USC team of engineering students won the collegiate space race by sending a rocket above the Kármán line, the imaginary boundary that marks the end of Earth’s atmosphere at 62 miles. The students named this rocket Traveller IV in honor of USC’s mascot. The rocket

Nighttrek Report

What to See in the June Sky

Every night in June, one of the closest stars to us, Vega, is extremely bright in the northeast. Vega is the fifth brightest star. Vega is spinning at very high speeds compared to our sun. Our sun rotates on its axis once every month compared to Vega which rotates 8000 times in one month. Vega’s rapid rotation causes the star to bulge considerably at its equator.

Mark your calendar for June 6 to see a thin, beautiful, crescent Moon next to the planet Mars. This will be visible low in the west.

One of the easiest constellations to see in June is Corvus, the crow. Corvus is low in the south and appears to be a simple four-sided box. Nearby are also the constellations Hydra the snake and Crater the cup. A popular legend associated with these three constellations is that Corvus the crow stopped to eat figs on his way to fetch water for Apollo. Instead of telling the truth to Apollo, he lied and said that a snake, Hydra, kept him from the water, while holding

District might have had a bigger desire to hit a larger target and that is an increase in your property tax for schools. The increase will generate $500 million a year for the next 12 years. While I am not alleging anything sinister by the elected officials, it is something to consider when you examine the facts and logic behind the property tax increase being pushed by the school district and local elected officials including Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti.

I want to state that Measure EE is not about the dedicated teachers that work hard to motivate students to excel and achieve success. Measure EE is about getting additional funds to the school district that already runs on a 2018-2019 annual budget of $13.7 billion. The school district administration is bloated and out of touch with reality. Changes need to be made to save funds and increase student success and support the teachers. I encourage you to read the facts on Measure EE and join me and vote NO on Measure EE.

The next tax increase that is currently being worked on in Sacramento is a split roll where commercial property under Prop 13 will be increased and residential will remain at the current level until that comes under attack and is also increased. Don’t be a fool and be taken advantage of by the political structure that is always taking from you and your family and showing nothing in return.

Lottery and school funding...While on the subject of funding for schools, I

recently went to Henri’s Restaurant on Sherman Way in Canoga Park to check out the current cost of lottery tickets and all the programs currently being offered to those looking to win millions from the California Lottery and help fund public education in California. If you recall and I will remind you once again, the lottery was established in California to assist with the funding of public schools. Here is what I discovered. There are currently eight programs where you can select numbers and hopefully win money.

Here are the current programs. 1. Daily Derby 2. Power Ball 3. Fantasy 5 4. Super Lotto Plus 5. Daily 4 6. Hot Spot 7. Daily 3 8. Mega Millions.

Additionally, there are scratchers that you can purchase. In the machine, I found the following scratchers: one at $1, three at $2, five at $3, seven at $5, four at $10, three at $20 and one at $30.

As you can see, there are many options for you to gamble and support the California Lottery (Calottery) and public schools in California. Now the question is how much goes to LAUSD annually?

I have done some research and will show you where all that lottery money is now going. Contributions to California schools from the California Lottery have gone unchanged from 13 years ago. The rules were changed by the Sacramento Legislatures who eliminated the requirement that 34 cents of every lottery dollar go to education. The idea was to free up the lottery to sweeten winnings and in turn have more sales and push the money higher. The current contribution to education is just 23 cents of lottery revenue. As the lottery has expanded the games and increased the price of the scratchers, more revenue is being paid out to winners and less to schools. In theory, voters were sold on the lottery generating money for California schools.

Reality is that the lottery is simply a gambling scheme where education is taking a back seat to gambling. Good or bad, it can only be changed by those that changed it in the first place. The elected officials in Sacramento.
