BACKGROUND

The i n t e r e s t i s i n theory-guided r e s e a r c h t h a t e x p l o r e s c o g n i t i v e , m o t i v a t i o n a l ,s o c i a l , emot iona l and c o n t e x t u a l c o n t r i b u t i o n s to t h e above aspec ts o f p l a n n i n g . INTRODUCTION

Cancer C e n t e r s would promote t h e p a r t i c i p a t i o n o f m i n o r i t y groups i n c a n c e r c o n t r o l r e s e a r c h by b roaden ingt h e i r o p e r a t i o n a l b a s e t o f a c i l i t a t e t h e expansion o f c a n c e r c o n t r o l r e s e a r c h e f f o r t s i n e a r l y d e t e c t i o n , p r e v e n t i o n , s c r e e n i n g , p r e - t r e a t m e n t e v a l u a t i o n , t rea tment , c o n t i n u a - t i o n care r e h a b i l i t a t i o n ; and t h e i n c r e a s e d involvement o f m i n o r i t y p o p u l a t i o n p r imary care p r o v i d e r s e a r l y i n t h e c o u r s e o f c l i n i c a l t r e a t m e n t . BACKGROUND

The D i v i s i o n o f Research Resources (DRR) is developing a program t o improveh o l d i n g f a c i l i t i e s f o r HIV-infected chimpanzees a f t e r release from a c t i v e p r o t o c o l s . Long-term maintenance o f chimpanzees i n f e c t e d w i t h H I V a f te r release from an a c t i v e p r o t o c o l i s t h e r e s p o n s i b i l i t y o f t h e owner. It is a n t i c i p a t e d t h a t funds w i l l be o b t a i n e d by t h e owner f o r long-term suppor t of i n f e c t e d chimpanzees from t h e organizations/investigators who suppor t t h e r e s e a r c h p r o t o c o l s .

ELIGIBILITY

Domestic p u b l i c and p r i v a t e i n s t i t u t i o n s and o r g a n i z a t i o n s which have chimpanzees t h a t have been i n o c u l a t e d wi th H I V i n f ede ra l ly - funded r e s e a r c h may a p p l y . A l l an ima l s must be i d e n t i f i e d under e x i s t i n g p r o t o c o l s t h a t have been approved by t h e PHS AIDS Animal Models Committee.

MECHANISM OF SUPPORT

The FY 1988 Budget i n c l u d e s $1 .43 m i l l i o n f o r t h i s i n i t i a t i v e . It is a n t i c i p a t e d t h a t several awards w i l l be made b e f o r e September 30, 1988. Chimpanzees i n o c u l a t e d wi th H I V i n Government-supported r e s e a r c h p r o j e c t s are h e l d i n s e v e r a l d i f f e r e n t i n s t i t u t i o n s .
