4. Portrait ofa Gentleman
Signed and dated lower right: Corot 1829
Oil on canvas, i8V4 by 14% inches (46.3 by 37.5 cm.)
Provenance
O'Bach, London, c. 1890-1900
Hollander & Cremetti, London
This portrait reappeared only recendy and is an impor-
tant addition to the corpus of known portraits by Corot.
Perhaps the first portrait painted by Corot after his return
from Italy in the 1820s, this painting reveals the artist's
profound skills of observation, recendy honed in the
landscapes around Rome. Portraits by Corot are rare, and
there are only a few from this period. Other fine examples
are in the Louvre, the Cincinnati Art Museum, and the
Clark Art Institute.
This painting will be included in the forthcoming fifth
supplement to the catalogue raisonne of Corot's works
being prepared by Martin Dieterle and Andre Pacitti.

Early in its history Smyrne-Bournabat was owned by
Alfred Robaut, Corot's close friend and biographer. Corot
painted the picture in July of 1873 in Douai. The shim-
mering water and shaded riverbank are the foundation of
this classic composition similar to other major late works
by Corot in the Louvre and The Frick Collection.

Sarah Faunce, Jura Landscape, New York, 1998
In the catalogue of the 1978 exhibition, Courbet und
Deutschland, it is suggested that this magnificent land-
scape was originally part of a much larger painting. After
intensive visual examination and study of primary
sources, Sarah Faunce has recendy made a convincing
argument to support this theory (see Sarah Faunce,/wra
Landscape, New York, 1998). The painting has been
restored to full autograph status and is an important addi-
tion to the corpus of known works by Courbet.
This painting will be included in the forthcoming critical
catalogue raisonne of the works of Gustave Courbet by
Sarah Faunce.
