“I had to read in front of the whole school and I didn’t think I could do it, but I did it and did good.”---James Abeyta (Little Ninja)
“When I was learning how to ride a motorcycle, I was scared, but I said ‘I’ll try’ and now I can ride a motorcycle.”---Bryan Russell (Junior Ninja)
“At Knotts, I went on a lot of roller coasters most people are scared of. I was too, but I still went on. I ended up liking them too.”---Kaleo Astorga (Junior Ninja)

May is... Recreational Water Illness and Injury Prevention Month. As summer approaches and the temperature warms up, who doesn’t love to stay cool by some water play?! Although water is a great way to keep cool and a wonderful form of exercise, there can be some dangers associated with it.
Some scary facts about Drowning: *Drowning is the second leading cause of death of children 14 & under. *For every child who dies from drowning, another 4 receive emergency care for nonfatal submersion injuries. *84% of drowning deaths of kids 5 & under happen at home. *Two thirds of drowning deaths occur between May and August. *Boys have a drowning rate 2 times that of girls. *There are several cases of body entrapment by a pool or spa drain especially hair entanglement in the drains.
How can drowning be prevented??? *Supervision when in or around water. Designate a responsible, undistracted adult to watch children while in the bath or swimming. Supervisors of preschool age and younger children should be close enough to “touch” the child at all times. *Buddy System. Swim with a friend and near lifeguards when possible.
*Learn to Swim *Learn CPR. It might take time for paramedics to arrive in case of an emergency, your CPR skills could make a difference in someone’s life. *Do not use air-filled or foam toys. “Water wings”, “noodles”, or inner tubes are not designed to keep swimmers safe. Use a life jacket. *Avoid Alcohol before or during swimming, boating, or water skiing. Do not drink while supervising children in the water.
Tips for Healthy Ninjasby Nurse Ahnnya Slaughter

*Seizure Disorder Safety. If you or someone you know has a seizure disorder, provide one-on-one supervision at all times. Consider taking a shower rather than using the bath for bathing.
May 6-10 is Teacher Appreciation Week - Why not have your child do something for the special teachers or "senseis" in their lives?
May 27 is Memorial Day - Teach your kids about Memorial day and to make it something more than just hamburgers and hotdogs?Ways to commemorate our fallen soldiers: * Display the American flag * Make a flag...younger kids can just draw the flag. Older kids might have fun making a flag out of "faux stained glass" using glue and some paint? For more info check out http://suzyssitcom.com/2011/01/feature-friday-faux-stained-glass.html* Even though Memorial Day is to commemorate men and women who lost their lives serving the country, why not take this opportunity to remember our current soldiers? The City of Torrance will be holding their Armed Forces Celebration starting Friday May 17 through May 19 with a parade on May 18. * To remember someone serving abroad, your child can send a letter or care package to a soldier. Go to www.anysoldier.com for more info.
