The latest film by Waël Noured-dine takes us back to Lebanon in 2006, when Israeli bombs were
targeting Hezbollah.
The native Lebanese director wanted to capture his own viewpoint amongst the populist media coverage. Documentary-like shots show an abandoned country. After hearing the explosion of an air strike, the camera moves instantly towards the scene of impact.
While some Lebanese are still trying to put out the fires, the international press are already arriving to capture the breaking news. Drugs and alcohol are present to make it through the day. In one scene, photographers are tussling around a corpse like children around a piece of candy. Unfortunately, the strong initial impression gradually fades, numbed by the repetition of tragic scenes.

On the 11th of June this year, Wim Wenders gave a speech in front of the European Parliament about the meaning of European identity. I wonder if this event somehow influenced
the Torino Film Festival in choosing him for one of their two retrospectives. I like to believe it did.
The subject matter Wenders brought to the table was, in short: does Europe have a soul? In other words, is it something more than an economic agreement so that you don’t have to change currency when you travel? According to Wenders, there’s absolutely no doubt that it is - but not for the people who live in it. Europe is a unified subject when seen from the outside; for the millions of immigrants who try to get inside our borders. The ‘European dream’ is for them similar to how the American dream once was for the millions of Europeans (such as John Cassavetes’ Greek father) who tried to reach the new continent.
Nowadays, are we the European people aware of this? And, most importantly, are we able to define ourselves? The answer is actually very simple: there exists a European culture if the people of Europe, and especially we, the young people (who are about the same age as this festival - 25 years old) create it.
For over two millennia we have travelled across our continent, slaughtered and loved each other: we definitely have some history, and some good stories to tell. Then of course, Wim Wenders reasons as a director: the best way to build European culture is to make great European films. With due apologies to all other art forms, I’m sure that the cinephiles who will spend the next ten days together, enjoying celluloid overdoses, will surely agree.
Let’s see what happens.

Known as the documentarist of the Sex Pistols and a real admirer of punk culture, Julien Temple
here pays tribute to Joe Strummer, the iconoclast, wild and rebellious lead singer of The Clash who died five years ago. This could have been an exhaustive biopic, but although it spans Strummer’s life and artistic evolutions, Temple also explores the inner life of this fascinating character. A fully nuanced portrait, Joe Strummer. The Future Is Unwritten describes Strummer as an occasional coward and narcissist, albeit also someone who was concerned with others. Combining archive footage, interviews of various personalities around a campfire (reminding one of the Glastonbury festival concerts at the end of Strummer’s life) and impulsive, forceful editing, Temple closely follows the singer’s path from his first concerts with ‘The 101ers’ in squats to the growing Clash success story. Strummer’s rebellious, insurgent temper
is reinforced by inserted images from riots, boxing matches, and even extracts of an animation adapted from Orwell’s The Animal Farm - all symbolising the struggle against all kinds of oppressive authority systems, such as US imperialism or the police.Julien Temple subtly creates a wide and eclectic artistic universe close to Strummer’s spirituality and energy, combining images in an astonishing mosaic. Temple also accords real importance to the second part of Strummer’s life, more calm and spiritual, as a counterpoint to his youth. As he deepens the complexity of this punk icon, the whole documentary becomes a wild and authentic journey, from the aggressive fire of “London burning” to the peaceful Rastafarian flames. Far from the punk slogan “no future”, the future is unwritten, and as Temple concludes, quoting Joe Strummer: “People can change anything they want and that means everything in the world.”

What should we expect from Milky Way (Tejút) in relation to your other
works? My former films were about what I have lost. Milky Way shows what I have found. This film gives fewer points of reference than the previous ones. There is no story, no dialogue and no hero. Milky Way is a film of the imagination.
The Torino Festival selected Milky Way for its experimental section “The Zone”. What does ‘experimental’ mean to you?‘Experimental film’ - as every category - is a reduction. For me each film is an experiment. Still I was aware during the shooting that I am addressing fewer people than before. Milky Way is not only a film but a fine arts project. It is less than a film, but at the same time it is more. This sounds like a paradox, but after watching it things might become clearer.
You stated that you were happy to work in Hungary, despite all the difficulties. The financial system is more flexible and supportive than in other European countries. We, young Hungarian filmmakers, consider ourselves as sovereign artists. We don’t think that we have common attributes. Do we need any stronger common attribute?

The truth is a tricky thing. Many seek it and quite a few become certain that they offer the one others should listen to. In the US the career and films of Michael Moore have created heated debate and
provoked multiple counterattacks, but at times one feels that in Europe his work has been accepted as “the truth” or as “the documentaries” about life and politics in America during the Bush administration.

Into the festival
Story, story, story
Those were the words of Darryl F. Zanuck, the legendary producer and founder of Twentieth Century Fox. In Turin on Corso Dante the screenwriters participating in this year’s edition
of the Script&Pitch workshops have been focusing on just that, developing their stories with the help of professional tutors and working in groups to exchange ideas. During the weekend the participants will pitch their projects to producers who have been invited from different countries for a special chance to pick the project that suits their production slates the best.
Talking to the participants, you get at once the feeling of their passion and excitement; deadlines and tutors are considered welcome by this group of screenwriters who have a clear desire to go forward in the film industry. Going from treatment to screenplay is a demanding process, but judging from the track record of Script&Pitch many of the projects will do just fine.

Davide Oberto, curator of the three Italian sections. Davide reveals how to be one of the 11 docs (out of 300 received) or 24 shorts (out of 500) selected. No doubt for the documentaries:
“The movies we selected are above all cinematic, that’s why they deserve to be distributed in theatres. We prefer observational documentaries and those which are at the crossroads between fiction and doc, but we have also chosen more classical approaches, whose strengths are the topic and the ability of the director to inspire trust in his protagonists. Today it’s in documentaries that we see the best of Italian cinema.”
The panorama of Italiana.corti is more complicated to define: its more about gut feeling than set criteria. “They must have a cinematographical dignity, but without being simply an exercise in style. They can’t be just a product of transitional stage towards the feature film: in a short movie you still have to feel the urgency, the passion.”
Regarding the Spazio Torino, this special section remains a part of the festival which is bound to the city and its young directors: “This year the selection has been made for the first time using the same criteria of the other sections instead of by a popular jury, and the results are great.” One last thing to note - that is very important for a European magazine: for the first time ever these three sections will have English subtitles.
February 1989: Gena Rowlands lost her Pygmalion. January 2007: the ex-girlfriend of Wim Wenders, Solveig Dommartin, the unforgettable trapeze artist of Wings of Desire (1987), joined the kingdom of the angels. The partners of two great cineastes, Gena and Solveig were also their fetish actresses. Featuring in most of
their films, they were also involved in their creation.
After having participated in the montage of Tokyo-Ga (1985), Solveig Dommartin was fully involved in the writing of Until the End of the World (1991). In Wings of Desire, an angel, Daniel (Bruno Ganz) sacrificed his immortality for the beauty of the body and soul of an acrobat; whilst during the film shoot, Wenders succumbed to Solveig’s sensual and melancholy charm. Faraway So Close (1993) was the last opportunity for Wenders to direct her. Following their separation, she appeared in two long features by the French director Claire Denis. She also moved behind the camera for the short film If there were a bridge (1997). A desire for emancipation from the Wenderian style?
Married in New York in the mid-fifties, Gena Rowlands and John Cassavetes were then two young rising stars, notably in theatre and television. Whilst Gena signed up for a first big-screen role in 1958, John was preparing to launch his directing career with Shadows. Here Gena had a secondary role. Their real artistic one-to-one would not take shape until Faces. Self-produced, the film deals with the misdemeanours and loneliness which can transform marital relations. In reality, John Cassavetes and Gena Rowlands seemed more
than ever united. Their collaborations would continue from Minnie and Moskowitz (1971) to Love Streams (1984). Being intimately tied allowed them without a doubt to go beyond many limits. If Gena Rowlands was the muse of Cassavetes the director, he didn’t hesitate to film her face deformed by tears, her features unstrung and furious, her grimaces, her haggard looks, her uncontrollable movements. Toughness at work did not lessen their unconditional love. The very same that exists without a doubt between a cineaste and HIS actress.

‘‘ ’’Dead cow in a pick up truck”. You hear a
sentence like that and you know you are entering Lynch-land. In Lynch by blackAND-white we follow David Lynch during the pre-paration and making of his INLAND EMPIRE. A must-see for everyone interested in the mind and manners of the director.
Moore has taken a very effective approach which suits the blockbuster-loving generations in Europe, by marketing his political views in a way that echoes the advice of the great Billy Wilder : a “message wrapped in chocolate”. The editing, staging, use of archive footage and catchy tunes create emotions that leave nobody cold after a Moore film. But where does history, or should we say the reality of events, become involved? And how will history view the films of Moore? Manufacturing Dissent by Canadians Debbie Melnyk and Rick Caine delves into his world, trying examine the facts and the ways he uses them in his films. Like Moore, who tries to track down people who seem to prefer hiding, they go after him, only to find it impossible to get an interview. Manufacturing Dissent (the title referring to Chomsky’s book Manufacturing Consent) starts to go through Moore’s manifestations one by one with interviews and research, but it too, like many recent documentaries, must have faced the question of whether to take a more entertaining approach, and how to compete with the “Moore machine” that has become so effective in it. Whether Moore’s films have had enough political clout to affect voters can be debated, but they have certainly contributed to the “blockbusterisation” of representing political events. It is important therefore that we hear alternative viewpoints as well. News reports, adverts, pamphlets, propaganda and documentaries - the line separating them has often been a fragile one. But surely one can always trust a Canadian?

Editoriale L’11 Giugno 2007 Wim Wenders

Ritratto completo e sfaccettato, Joe Strummer.

Milky Way mostra quello che ho trovato. Milky Way è un film dell’immaginazione.

In realtà, John
