609 Broad Street the redevelopment of a long vacant 4-story 400,000 square foot building that was once home to the Hahne and Company department store.

This project will be a mixed use mixed income development that will activate Broad Street and the burgeoning small businesses on the Halsey Street corridor,

while the upper floors will feature a mix of commercial and residential spaces.

The redevelopment was approved in July by Newark’s Central Planning Board and Historic Landmarks Preservation Commission and will provide more than

180 residential units, an underground parking garage, 80,000 square feet of commercial, community, and office space on upper floors, and 50,000 square feet

of ground-level retail space in addition to a Whole Foods Market.

Project Highlights

609 Broad Street, one of Newark’s largest rehabilitation efforts in recent years, will help continue Newark’s revitalization efforts by:

• Creating approximately 350 jobs during construction phase, while increasing local business activity from workers during this time

• Upon completion, the Whole Foods Market will provide approximately 200 full-time jobs to local residents and the surrounding community

• The Hahne’s Department Store will become the new home to the Rutger’s Department of Arts, Culture, and Media, creating a new teaching and

work environment for over 60 of the University’s staff and faculty. Additionally, Rutgers will provide an approximately 400 seat auditorium-style

classroom for the general use of all departments. Rutger’s anticipates providing approximately 20 full-time jobs.

• Additional full-time jobs will be provided as a result of the remaining 50,000 square feet of retail space being leased.
