What is distracted driving?

There are four types of driver distraction:

● Visual – looking at something other than the road

● Auditory – hearing something not related to driving

● Manual – manipulating something other than the wheel

● Cognitive – thinking abut something other than driving

Distracted Driving

Page 34: NMCB 5 Family Return & Reunion Brief

UNCLASSIFIED

Seabees We build – We fightUNCLASSIFIED

Distraction occurs when a driver voluntarily diverts attention to something not relatedto driving that uses the driver’s eyes, ears, or hands.

Most distractions involve more than one of these types, with both a sensory – eyes, ears, or touch – and a mental component.

Distracted Driving

Page 35: NMCB 5 Family Return & Reunion Brief

Seabees We build – We fightUNCLASSIFIED

How often are drivers distracted?

Driver distraction is common in everyday driving and in crashes.

Drivers on the road: A study that observed 100 drivers continually for a full year found that drivers were distracted between 1/4 and 1/2 of the time.

Distracted Driving

Page 36: NMCB 5 Family Return & Reunion Brief

UNCLASSIFIED

Seabees We build – We fightUNCLASSIFIED

• About 2/3 of all drivers use a cell phone while driving.

• About 1/3 used a cell phone routinely. During daylight hours in 2009, between 7% and 10% of all drivers were using a cell phone.

• Texting: In recent surveys, about 1/8 of all drivers reported texting while driving. During daylight hours in 2009, fewer than 1% of all drivers were observed to be texting.

It WON’T happen to me!

During the last four years, we have reduced the number of Sailors killed in motor vehicle mishaps by 60%, from 63 in FY08 to 25 in FY11.

Motorcycle Safety

Page 63: NMCB 5 Family Return & Reunion Brief

UNCLASSIFIED

Seabees We build – We fightUNCLASSIFIED

Thanks to the combination of engaged leadership, enhanced training and personal responsibility

Out of the 16 Motorcyclists killed in FY11, 12 were riding sport bikes, 9 had not completed MSRC

This is a reduction in sport bike fatalities from 29 in FY08 to 12 this last year

Seabees are 4% of the Navy, yet we accounted for 18% of motorcycle deaths in FY11

It Won’t Happen to me!
