On 18 November 2013, Eskom undertook to ensure that contractors would begin compiling the requested contracts. “It is almost two months since this under- taking was made but no communication has been received to that effect,” Michael said in a statement this week.

“I will write to the Minister of Public Enterprises, Malusi Gigaba, requesting that he commit Eskom to a definitive deadline for the delivery of the contractual agree-ments,” she added.

The DA first requested the contracts in August 2013, after deadlines for the

Medupi contracts – a well kept secret? What is Eskom hiding? This question was raised when Natasha Michael, DA Shadow

Minister of Public Enterprises, announced that the power utility appears to be stalling in providing the DA with contractual agreements between Eskom and its contractors at the

Medupi building site, near Lephalale.

delivery of the Medupi project were shifted three times in less than a year and a half, allegedly as a result of a sub-contractor connected to the ANC-linked Hitachi Power Africa. The DA learnt this from both Eskom and Hitachi officials at an investigative oversight visit to Eskom’s Medupi Power Station in Limpopo in July 2013.

Michael is adamant that the agreements between contractors and Eskom must be scrutinised to determine whether any strict controls were put in place to ensure that parties meet their deadlines and what ac-tion can be taken against the contractors for failure to do so. According to Michael, Minister Malusi Gigaba made several promises including that “heads would roll” should any further delays occur. “He has

failed to deliver on this promise and prog-ress at the power station remains slow.”

“The delay in the delivery of these contracts is questionable. Eskom – as the national energy supplier – should be able to conduct its affairs in the public domain and remain accountable to South Africa. The strain on our national energy grid could have been avoided if stringent punitive measures were put in place for offending contractors and enforced.”

Michael warned that the DA would continue to push until the documents are delivered. “It is imperative that all contracts related to Medupi be made public as the continuous delays in the completion of construction at Medupi could have rami-fications in Eskom’s ability to provide electricity to the country,” she added.

Eskom spokesperson, Hillary Joffe could not be reached for comment.

Waterberg municipalities best in LimpopoThe Solidarity Research Institute (SRI) released its Livability Monitor for Limpopo recently, indicating the province’s best and worst municipalities.

Good news for residents in Lephalale and Mokopane is that Municipalities in the Waterberg District are the best performing municipalities in Limpopo.

According to Eugene Brink, senior researcher of the SRI, Limpopo consists of five district municipalities which are further subdivided into 25 local munici-palities.

Brink said the Thabazimbi Local Mu-nicipality, part of the Waterberg District Municipality, received the best livability score of 5,5 out of 10. Lephalale scored 5 and Mogalakwena 4.

“Owing to a large number of households with access to running water, a relatively low crime rate compared to other municipalities in the province and a low unemployment rate, municipalities in the Waterberg District Municipality generally fared better than municipalities within other district municipalities.

Nonetheless, there are many vacant positions in these municipalities,” Brink added.

The purpose of the monitor is to measure the livability of the province at municipal level. Livability is measured by analysing a range of key indicators such as the availability of water, electricity and jobs as well as sub-indicators falling under it.

The monitor forms part of Solidarity’s commitment to provide tax payers with information on how their tax money is utilised.

Mainly through research, the trade union acts as watchdog by monitoring the spending of the workers’ taxes.

The Mogalakwena town council on Mon-day called a special council meeting to discuss the mayor, Tlhalefi Mashemaite’s, political interference in the administrative affairs of the municipality.

Mashemaite and about 25 other ANC councillors stated that they couldn't be part of the meeting. Mashemaite said the meet-ing was illegal as the minutes were drafted by an acting division manager whose ap-pointment wasn’t authorised by him as mayor.

Other councillors also alleged that the speaker, Melba Mabusela, could not chair the meeting as she was suspended by the ANC and they felt the meeting was il-legal because the agenda was delivered to them an hour later than it was supposed to be available last Friday. But municipal manager, William Kekana, pointed out that

Mogalakwena - the power struggle continues

the power to appoint temporary divisional managers when others are on leave rests with the municipal manager, not the may-or. He also highlighted that Mashemaite’s signing powers as mayor was revoked at the emergency meeting of 19 December last year.

Despite the walk-out of the mayor and his followers, 33 councillors remained - enough for the council to form a quorum.

Council accepted a proposal by DA Councillor, Beyers Smit, to take disciplin-ary action against individuals in the mu-nicipality who abuse municipal funds for private security guards and measures.

Council also mandated the municipal manager to appoint security guards with-out following the full municipal process when he deems it urgent for the protec-tion of workers or municipal property - “especially when the SAPS is unwilling to fulfill its constitutional duties in protecting

workers and public property.”

The MM was also instructed to cancel all contracts entered into by the mayor.

The mayor’s conduct will also be reported to the provincial depart-ment of Cooperative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs.

While the meet-ing was under way, the mayor left the municipal premises escorted by his armed guards. Council also adopted a resolution that municipal money spent on unautho-rised security ser-vices such as the mayor’s guards will be retrieved.

Mogalakwena municipal manager, William Kekana, takes a smoke brake while the ANC holds a 3-minute caucus during a special council meeting on Monday. Kekana has appealed against a Gautheng High Court ruling that his contract be revoked. This ruling came only a few months after a order by the same court that his suspension was illegal and that he was to be reinstated.

Hereby we would like to wish each and everyone a blessed and prosperous 2014. We pray for a new year filled with its own challenges and to remain standing during the times of adversity, but to also give glory to Him during the prosperous times.

We thank all the families who have placed their trust in us to help them with love and understanding during this time of sadness with a dignified funeral or cremation service.

Without your support and love, we would not have been able to do what we do, be who we are and reach the heights or accomplish what we have.

Together we are part of everyone’s sorrow, but place our trust in Him who has carried us; especially during the times we thought we were not able to accomplish what we have. We also reach out to every family who has lost a loved one.

Always remember: you are not alone. We invite everyone to come and enjoy a cup of coffee at our office in a friendly, yet relaxing environment.

Each one of us is confronted with losing a loved one at some stage in our lives and you can rely on us to make this time of sadness a bit more bearable.

We also invite you to visit us to discuss your needs in connection with your funeral cover, information on a funeral or a crema-tion, even if you are not a member of Martin’s Funeral Services Mokopane.

“Ek haat verf, meer as enige iemand!

Skakel hom by 015 491 5214 of sel: 082 878 1508.

Straatname - raadslid maak self plan

Look out for bogus collegesLimpopo matriculants who failed to register at colleges and universities for 2014 are scurrying to secure a place at alternative higher education institutions across the province.

The Limpopo police department has, however, urged matriculates to ensure the institutions where they wanted to study were registered. Limpopo Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Fanie Masemola, said this week that they have observed with serious concern the mush-rooming of unregistered Training Colleges in the major towns of the province. He said that his department, together with education officials, will build up special investigative teams with the aim to close all “bogus institutions” that might be oper-ating or are about to operate in Limpopo.

“We want to ensure that those who are running illegal colleges are apprehended and receive harshest punishments. We are aware that the majority of applicants at legitimate universities and colleges may not be accepted and out of desperation, may fall victim to such bogus institutions. It must be noted [that] anyone arrested and found guilty of running a bogus insti-tution faces 10 years imprisonment or can be fined [for] R250 000 or both.” said Masemola.

Parents and all prospective students are urged to call 0800 265 266 to estab-lish whether higher education institutions are in fact registered. Police have also appealed to the public to blow the whistle on unregistered colleges.

Marlindi was diep godsdienstig.

So jonk, maar skaars 53 jaar oud. Maar God se tyd is volmaak. Hy maak nooit ‘n enkele fout! My Liefde, jou liefde vir blomme het my dikwels ver-stom!

Noordelike Nuus het Woensdag by verskeie skole in

Jeanelda Pienaar sommer gou-gou haar nuwe klassie by Laerskool Krugerpark stil en soet gehad.

Potgietersrus CVO Skool spog hierdie jaar met drie nuwe onderwyseresse waarvan twee voormalige hoofmeisies by dié skool was. Surene Möller gaan Afrikaans en Bybel aanbied, Laura Oosthuizen is die nuwe Graad 0 juffrou en Nastachia le Roux gaan Lewenswetenskap aanbied.

Charlene and Sipho Sibanyani with their daughter Ziyanda, who could not wait to start her school career.

Mechiel Louw and Julie Matinha will be teaching at Carpe Diem this year. Mechiel will be teaching Grade 2 and 3, while and Julie will be the Grade 1 teacher.

Mokopane Primary’s Grade 1 Lesedi Lakalakala.

Mokopane Primary’s Phillis Lekalakala.

Mokopane Primary’s Grade 1 learners were ready for the big school with not a single tear being shed. Kholofelo Mashilo is in Grade 4 and is taking good care of his little brother, Mahlatsi who is in Grade 1 this year.

Melanda Vosser has taken over the reigns as headmaster of Carpe Diem School in Mokopane. With years of teaching experience Melanda is looking forward to working with the personnel, learners and parents of Carpe Diem. Here she is with this year’s Grade 1’s.

Monique Struwig and Roelien du Toit, long-standing residents of Mokopane, have joined the team of teachers at Carpe Diem School. They will be taking care of the School’s Grade 0 learners.

Katlago Ledwaba shows off the food bin all 152 of Mokopane Primary’s Grade 1’s received as a gift from Pick ‘n Pay Mokopane. With him is Pick ‘n Pay manager Corné van Heerden.

Hierdie is haar 20ste jaar as Graad Een onderwyseres by dié skool.

Wilita (Grade 1) and Mason (Grade 4) Lee are the first white children to return to Mokopane Primary School since 2000, when it was still known as Laerskool Potgietersrus. “Why shouldn’t I send my children to a school where they get taught in an international language and get to integrate with their fellow South Africans from the start,” their mother, Elita Lee, said on Wednesday.

Ironically Wilita and Mason today are pioneers in much the same way Nhlanhla Matukane and his older siblings Yvonne and Jabulani were when they were the first black children enrolled in this school in 1996.

But unlike the Lees, the Matukanes weren’t welcomed with open arms. White parents threatened them and they had to have a police escort to get into the school grounds safely.

Today Nhlanhla is 25 years old and a geologist. Today’s principal, Ockert Groenewald, was one of his teachers. He recently spoke to The Star Newspaper’s Ufrieda Ho about the early days of transformation:

He grew up in the town and was among the 1965 intake of six-year-olds at the very school he’s now prin-cipal of.

Groenewald believes had white parents paused and waited instead of staging a mass exodus in the late 90’s, the school would naturally have balanced out as an integrated school, like Piet Potgieter High School next door. But all that is water under the bridge and Groenewald's policy of teaching the child in front of him regardless of colour or creed has clearly paid off. Nhlanhla and his siblings are testimony to that.

Lephalale Primary's Grade 1 learners are ready for 2014!

Wilita and Mason Lee are the first white learners at Mokopane Primary School in 14 years.

Mokopany Primary comes full circle7
