School Buses Thank you to all of the parents who have contacted the school to raise concerns about school buses. On Friday 4 October, the chair of our Governing Council, Kay Govin and I met with two representatives from Transfield Services. This followed a letter to the Minister of Transport outline concerns about the buses, from the Governing Council. The meeting saw a number of possible solutions discussed including: Buses leaving the school later on Monday to accommodate Blackwood Primary School’s decision to finish at 2.30pm. Possible dedicated school bus run from Marion Shopping Centre to the school. All school buses scheduled to arrive before 8.40am when lessons start. Changing any service will take time and the suggestions will need to go through an approval process. At this stage, approval has been given to change the School Bus K from Stop 18D Springbank Road. The bus will leave five minutes earlier at 8.07 am (instead of 8.12 am). This change is effective from 21 October. Information was provided to students through the student bulletin, an email sent to families and leaflets distributed by the bus operator. Any parents have concerns or suggestions about the buses please continue to make contact with me. It is important that all students who catch the buses travel with a valid ticket or Metrocard. Students who evade bus fares may be referred to the Prosecutions Department for DPTI for assessment as they are committing an offence under the Passenger Transport Act. Metrocards can be purchased from the school canteen. However, we do not have the facility to recharge them. School Car Parks / Roadways Parents/caregivers are reminded that the two car parks on Seymour Street are not kiss and drop areas. Students can be dropped off at the end of Seymour Street, adjacent to the school. Also, the school bus access road should not be used to drive through between 8.15am and 4pm, as students are present. We want students to be safe at all times, particularly in areas where motor vehicles are present. Year 12 Students This week marks some significant events for our 2013 Year 12 Graduating students. On Wednesday 23 October, we joined with family, friends and members of our school community to celebrate the academic, leadership, sporting and community achievements of our Year 12 2013 class. The occasion was a mixture of joviality and tradition, as we gathered at the Adelaide Town Hall. Congratulations to all of our students who completed their Year 12. On Friday 25 October, we held a whole school assembly to farewell our Year 12s followed by brunch. The brunch was organised by Sam Thomson our Christian Pastoral Support Worker, ably supported by a group of youth volunteers. We wish our Year 12s all the very best as they navigate the last few weeks – revising for and sitting examinations, completing final assessment tasks and assembling the evidence of their achievements for the SACE Board moderation. Staff Changes for Term 4 Welcome back to Ms Peta Maher who has returned after the birth of her son late in 2012. Mr John Forster is replacing Mr Richard Tan. NAPLAN RESULTS The results for the Year 9 National Assessment Program Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) 2013 have been received at the school. Parents and Caregivers of Year 9 students received some information about the NAPLAN results as part of our parent-teacher interviews in the last week of Term 3. When the individual student reports arrive from ACARA, we will be posting them home. Below is a summary of the results:

Comparison of the mean score for writing between 2010 and 2011 is not appropriate as the genre of writing changed from narrative to persuasive. However, comparisons can be made in the writing component from 2011 through to 2013. Overall, the school’s results show improvement in reading, spelling, grammar and punctuation from 2010. The graph indicates that there has been an improvement since 2011 for all of the five components of the assessments. For our current Year 9 students, progress from Year 7 to Year 9 is as follows:

In Reading 75% of our students showed progress in the medium to upper levels. In Numeracy 87% of our students showed progress in the medium to upper levels.

The results from the NAPLAN will be analysed by question type to identify curriculum adjustments and emphasis that we may need to implement in order for future students to engage with and achieve in the NAPLAN. We also will be looking at the results to identify whether the introduction of the Quicksmart Literacy Program in 2012 has impacted specifically on the NAPLAN results of the students who were involved in Quicksmart last year. As a school, we have been using information from the Australian Council of Education Research (ACER) Progressive Achievement Tests in Mathematics (PAT Maths) as a means to measure student progress in mathematics in Years 8 to 10. This work is being led with our mathematics teachers by Amanda Aulert our Senior Leader in Numeracy Coach.

2013 IBMYP EVALUATION A key feature of Blackwood High School’s involvement in the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Program (IBMYP) is the set of accountability requirements for curriculum and student assessment by which we are bound. As well a requirement that teachers participate in ongoing reflection, review and refinement. Blackwood High School, as part of the Mitcham Hills College (MHC), goes through an external evaluation process which reports on the effectiveness of our curriculum delivery, accuracy of curriculum documents and the appropriateness of its overall educational program. From 24 to 26 June of this year such an evaluation took place. A three member international team reviewed the quality of curriculum and educational programs across the MHC, which included our school, along with Belair, Blackwood, Coromandel Valley and Eden Hills Primary Schools. The evaluation report has now been received and the Mitcham Hills College, collectively and as individual schools, has been found to be an effective and responsive educational partnership that provides a quality educational program to its local community. Key findings in the report included:

Blackwood High School’s educational beliefs and values reflecting those of the International Baccalaureate (IB) philosophy.

Leadership within our school ensuring effective implementation of the program. Resourcing that ensures the effective operation of the program. Written curriculum reflecting the IB philosophy. Teaching and learning reflecting the IB philosophy. Collaborative planning of, and reflection upon the curriculum, thus enhancing the program’s delivery.

The evaluation report has provided valuable information on areas that will inform our continued work in the IBMYP over the next five years. This work will focus on further improving the provision of the program; standardisation of assessment and a focus on encouraging students to engage in further self-reflection and review throughout the learning process. These areas will form an ongoing area of focus across the MHC, and will be explicitly addressed in curriculum teams. Success in the 2013 Evaluation is in no small part due to the extensive preparation undertaken by a range of individuals, both past and present, across the Mitcham Hills College. On behalf of Blackwood High School, I would like to note the contributions of all teaching and support staff, especially Chris Rebbeck (our retired IBMYP coordinator) and MHC primary schools IBMYP coordinator Liz Black. Special thanks to our Governing Council members Kay Govin, Terry Goessling, Lynn Stratton, parents Averill Britt, Louise Williamson, Kim Milde and Murial MacConnell, and students Jasmin Gallagher-Bohn, Taylor Thomas, Matt Albrecht and Ronan Naidu who all contributed to answering questions to the evaluation team on behalf of the school community. YEAR 8 BOYS BASKETBALLERS ADVANCE TO STATE FINALS On Thursday, 17 October, the Year 8 Boys Basketball squad travelled to Aberfoyle Park High School to compete in the first round of the SSSSA Knockout competition. In the first match, Blackwood faced Unley in what was to be the most evenly contested game of the day. Blackwood started strongly, stretching out to a 13-3 lead early in the first half. However, Unley were able to hit back, eventually levelling the game at 18 all just before half time. Blackwood were able to wrestle back control of the match, once again stretching out to a handy lead at 33-20, eventually winning 42-33, with a baseline jump shot from Willy Bae putting the icing on the game. Star performers were guards D’Arcy Mitchell and Daniel Nash, with some good inside work from big man Callum Coleman-Jones. After a short break, Blackwood faced Reynella East. After a fairly even start, Blackwood were able to stretch out to a match winning lead of 26-5 at half time. Blackwood continued their early dominance in the second half, winning 54-7. Top scorers were Callum Coleman-Jones with 10 and Nathan Beenham with 8. In the third and final game, Blackwood faced the hosts Aberfoyle Park. In a rough match, Aberfoyle Park came out very determined, however, it did not deter our boys, stretching out to a 33-6 lead by the half time, and continued to run away with it winning 57-12. Star performers were Cameron Clohesy and Ryan Mountford. Blackwood now advances to the state finals at Wayville in Week 5. Thanks to Tom Oliphant for his efforts as coach. HOMESTAY FAMILIES WANTED Planning is underway for our final Study Tour visit for 2013. Ritsumeikan Junior High School in Kyoto, Japan (last year’s students in photo) is bringing their entire Year 9 cohort (more than 230 students!) to Adelaide. They will be hosted by 16 different high schools. Our group of 7 boys and 7 girls are arriving in Adelaide on Thursday 21 November and departing Wednesday 4 December. I am still looking for homestay families for 2 of the girls and 4 of the boys. A homestay payment of $450 will be paid to families to help defray expenses. During their stay in Australia, the Japanese students will travel to and from school each day with their hosts. At school, they will have a full schedule of activities that will include English lessons, a chance to experience classes such as Aussie Sports and Home Economics and some excursions. Host students will be invited to join the Japanese students for some activities. On the weekends, our visitors will welcome the opportunity to experience our typical Australian lifestyle – a visit to relatives, a drive or short trip, watching their host play sport, a picnic in the park, a game of cricket/swimming at the beach, shopping or any routine family activity. You will also be invited to attend a farewell dinner for the visiting group. If you are interested in hosting a student from Ritsumeikan or are interested in getting more information, please contact me here at school on 8278 0900 or email [email protected]

UPCOMING ARTS EVENTS Year 11 Drama performance: LIZZIE BORDEN Wednesday 6 November, student matinee and 7pm evening performance. “Lizzie Borden took an axe……” The SACE Stage 1 end-of-year production is set in a playground and poses the question “What would Lizzie Borden have been like as a child?” Set in America in the late 19th Century it centres on an American woman who was tried and acquitted of the 1892 axe murders of her father and stepmother and looks at schoolyard bullying, juxtaposed

with excerpts from the real-life trial transcripts. With several Year 11 Musical items to lighten the mood, the entire program will take less than 1 hour and is the final performance examination for our students, so we would love to see you in the audience. A donation at the door would be appreciated to help us cover our costs.

Year 9 Drama performance EVIL SHALL NOT TRIUMPH will be showcased in the matinee performance (11am) on the same day – a good old fashioned melodrama with the evil landowner, the maiden in distress and the all-conquering hero coming in to save the day. Lots of fun and featuring some of the very fine student performers we have coming up from Middle School.

BLACKWOOD’S GOT TALENT SUNSET FESTIVAL It's that time of year again - the Sunset Festival Blackwood's Got Talent show is less than a month away. The program begins at 5.30pm on Wednesday 13 November on the Front Lawns with live music acts while the World Challenge Team puts on a sausage sizzle and refreshment stall. At 7.30pm, the Auditorium plays host to yet more talent - dance acts, singers, acoustic music acts, jugglers, comedians, magicians, acrobats. $275 in prize money will be spread between the indoor and outdoor acts. Auditions are currently underway.

YEAR 12 GRADUATION It was a great pleasure to stand before our Year 12 cohort of 2013 and announce the recipients of awards and wish our students the best for their future beyond Blackwood High School. It was an evening filled with anticipation, excitement and joy in celebrating the end of their school experience.

The evening was hosted by our SRC Presidents Talia McIntosh and William Candy who did a marvellous job in representing the school and ensuring the evenings proceedings progressed smoothly. Students received awards ranging from Service

Awards to Highest Academic Subject Awards and Community Awards. Both Tosh Glenn and Hannah Worden delivered reflective speeches, which gave insight into the journey they travelled with their fellow classmates. The evening was enhanced further by fantastic musical performances from Tosh Glenn, Hannah Worden and Alice Jervis.

Congratulations to all the Year 12 students, award recipients and those who participated in the ceremony which was a success and enjoyed by all in attendance.

Mary Hodson, Assistant Principal Senior School
