Dear reader, Welcome to this new edition of Infosylva. Twenty Latin American and Caribbean countries convened in Lima, 9-13 November, for the 29th session of FAO’s Latin American and Caribbean Forestry Commission, to evaluate progress in the implementation of public policies for the sustainable management of forests in the region. (In Spanish) An FAO rehabilitation project in St. Lucia, funded by the FAO Forestry Department, aims to help the country to restore rivers and eroded slopes by replanting trees and removing debris in the areas affected by the recent flooding. (In English) An ongoing project in Lebanon to protect pine forests from pests will benefit from new guidelines aimed at enhancing resilience of these forests, which are crucial for the livelihoods of rural communities in the area relying on the production of pine nuts. The new guidelines were launched by the Ministry of Agriculture in collaboration with FAO earlier this month. (In English) In Paraguay a campaign was recently launched to draw attention to the role that indigenous communities can play in the protection of the severely degraded forests of the country, which seem to be disappearing at a higher rate than all other forests in the region. Public institutions in Algiers have just launched an initiative called the “Algerian green days” with the aim of reconciling the citizens with the green areas surrounding their city. (In French) In Brazil, the seeds of the murumuru tree are helping poor people who rely on forest products to increase their meagre revenue, as they become an increasingly prized ingredient for cosmetics. (In English, Spanish and French) And finally, there is still time until 29 November to sign the petition promoted by the Mountain Partnership to ensure that the impact of climate change on mountain peoples and ecosystems is fully addressed in the new climate deal to be discussed and approved at the UNFCCC COP21 in Paris later this year. Veinte países de América Latina y el Caribe se reunieron en Lima, del 9 al 13 de noviembre en ocasión de la 29ª reunión de la Comisión Forestal de la FAO para América Latina y el Caribe, para evaluar el progreso en la implementación de políticas públicas para la gestión sostenible de los bosques en la región. (En español) Un proyecto de rehabilitación de la FAO en Santa Lucía, financiado por el Departamento Forestal de la FAO, tiene como objetivo ayudar al país en la restauración de ríos y laderas erosionadas mediante la replantación de árboles y la remoción de escombros en las zonas afectadas por las recientes inundaciones. (En inglés) Un proyecto en curso en el Líbano para proteger los bosques de pino de plagas, se beneficiará de nuevas directrices para mejorar la capacidad de recuperación de estos bosques, que son cruciales para el sustento de las comunidades rurales de la zona, basado en la producción de piñones. Vingt pays d'Amérique latine et des Caraïbes se sont réunis à Lima, du 9 au 13 novembre, à l’occasion de la 29e session de la Commission des forêts de la FAO pour l’Amérique latine et les Caraïbes, pour évaluer les progrès dans la mise en œuvre des politiques publiques pour la gestion durable des forêts dans la région. (En espagnol) Un projet de réhabilitation de la FAO à Sainte-Lucie, financé par le Département des forêts de la FAO, vise à aider le pays à restaurer les rivières et les pentes érodées à travers la replantation d'arbres et l'enlèvement des débris dans les zones touchées par les récentes inondations. (En anglais) Un projet en cours au Liban pour protéger les forêts de pins de ravageurs, bénéficiera de nouvelles lignes directrices qui visent à améliorer la résilience de ces forêts. From disaster to rehabilitation in St. Lucia FAO News Latina America and the Caribbean 03/11/15 The FAO, through its Sub-Regional office for the Caribbean has been working to assist the Forestry Department of the Ministry of Agriculture, Lands, Forestry and Fisheries in the country, in its efforts to restore the rivers and replant trees along the river. Funding from the FAO was provided to the Department of Forestry to train workers to replant the areas that suffered from erosion and to remove

debris caused by the flooding. Preparing for the Global Forest Survey FAO Forestry News 11/11/15 This week, FAO will bring together around 30 country representatives and forestry experts from research institutions and intergovernmental organizations to consolidate the planning for the Global Forest Survey (GFS) project. The project will establish a global network of forestry sample plots to produce freely available and comparable forest data about the characteristics and health status of specific forest ecosystems (not limited by country borders). Producers and policy makers committed to an agenda for agroecology in Sub-Saharan Africa FAO News Africa 05/11/15 A Regional Meeting for Africa on Agroecology for food and nutrition security in Sub-Saharan Africa brought together for two days in Dakar over 300 participants, representing social movements and producers, the private sector, the academia and agronomic research institutes, as well as indigenous peoples and grassroots communities from across Sub-Saharan Africa and other continents. Sustainable management of Europe’s forests on the agenda FAO News Europe and Central Asia 02/11/15 Sustainable management of forests, which cover 33 percent of Europe’s land area, will come into focus this week at the joint session of the FAO European Forestry Commission and the UNECE Committee on Forests and the Forest Industry (Silva2015). Hosted by Switzerland in the alpine town of Engelberg, the five-day event takes place from 2-6 November, concurrently with European Forest Week 2015.

New FAO publications Promoting mountain products for better livelihoods Since markets are often distant and transportation is costly, interventions should focus on high-value and low-volume products, better organization in cooperatives or farmers organizations, support in all the steps of the value chain, including production, processing, packaging and marketing. Mountain specific policies and laws should be put in place to provide an enabling environment to unlock the potential of mountain people. Safeguarding land tenure rights in the context of agricultural investment This guide has been developed in response to concerns regarding large-scale land acquisitions and the need to increase investment in agriculture. The guide supports application of the Voluntary Guidelines on the Responsible Governance of Tenure for Land, Fisheries and Forests in the Context of National Food Security at the national level by providing technical guidance on how to safeguard tenure rights in the context of agricultural investments, including in land.

Nouvelles publications de la FAO Promouvoir les produits de montagne pour une meilleure qualité de vie En raison de l’éloignement des marchés et du coût des transports, les interventions doivent se concentrer sur les produits à haute valeur ajoutée et de faible volume. Les producteurs de montagne ont besoin de s’organiser en coopérative ou en association pour se soutenir dans toutes les étapes de la chaîne de valeur, parmi lesquelles figurent la production, le développement, l’emballage et la commercialisation. Les politiques et les lois spécifiques aux montagnes devraient être mises en place afin de fournir un environnement propice à la promotion du potentiel des populations de montagne.

Recent videos Alien invasive species: Eucalyptus tree threatened FAO 10/11/15 The Eucalyptus tree commonly known as “the gum tree” in Zimbabwe is an exotic species that is believed to have originated from Australia. Unfortunately, commonly grown species of this tree are now under threat from three deadly invasive alien pests. To address the threat posed by these invasive species, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and the Forestry Commission of Zimbabwe are helping the farmers to find solutions to manage these fast spreading pests. supporting their collective management and encouraging their use – and maintaining the pooled material as a public good under the management of the global community.

Online petition for mountains at UNFCCC COP21 The International Petition on Mountain ecosystems and peoples affected by climate change is meant to be signed by individuals and is aimed at mobilizing peoples from all over the world in support of mountain peoples and ecosystems. Peru Peru creates ‘Yellowstone of the Amazon': 3.3M acre reserve home to uncontacted tribes, endangered wildlife Mongabay.com 07/11/15 Peru on Sunday will officially declare Sierra del Divisor National Park, a 1.3 million hectare (3.3 million acre) reserve that is home to uncontacted indigenous tribes, endangered wildlife, and one of South America's wildest landscapes. Peruvian rainforest 22 times the size of Chicago named a national park Phys.org 10/11/15 The Peruvian government announced on Sunday the designation of 3.3 million acres of Amazonian rainforest as a national park in the Sierra del Divisor mountain range. Chicago's Field Museum played a key role in the international effort that led to the creation of this conservation area. Rwanda Searching for endangered mountain gorillas in the deep forests of Rwanda The Washington Post 03/11/15 Associated Press photographer Ben Curtis trekked into the mountains of Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park to take a look at the rising phenomenon of tourists making the trip in the hopes of catching glimpses of mountain gorillas.
