Welcome to the September issue of The Dialogue

It has been an amazing summer! A warm May, when braver types set their seeds, followed by torrential June when we despaired of anything growing apart from the weeds and we wondered how we would manage with Open Gardens and would there be anything to show any visitors.

But towards the end of June the sun began to shine and then nature took over. The village awoke on the morning of the Open Gardens to brilliant sunshine; and the crowds came. From before opening time until after official closing they flocked to Diseworth. The hard workers at the Church found a queue of people waiting to purchase tickets and collect programmes. The providers of lunch and picnics soon ran out of cobs and sent for more, the cream teas did a roaring trade while exhausted gardeners greeted visitors with no time for a break. It was a proud day for the village and for all those who had worked so hard for its success. The photographs in this issue tell the story.

And now we have another big event coming up. The Flower Show when all the efforts of gardeners, bakers, artists, photographers, flower arrangers and others will bring their various products to the Village Hall for us and visitors to admire. The show will call the talents of another group of volunteers who are now very busy preparing and planning this annual event which has a proud history over the years.

Diseworth does well for visitors to our events. The Heritage Centre welcomed descendants of the Mee family all the way from Australia coming to find headstones in the churchyard and to share their research of Diseworth residents of long ago. The Watson family, descendants of Harry Barnes who died at the Battle of the Somme, arrived in the village on the 100th Anniversary of his death and laid flowers at the family grave. And a touch of style when the Earl and Countess of Rosse arrived to seek information about their forebears in Diseworth.

But September belongs to a Diseworth resident, not a visitor. How fortunate we are to have an Olympian in our little village. Emma Wiggs has been training so hard and sharing her gruelling schedule with the fantastic result that she will take part in the Paralympics in Rio. What courage Emma has shown, working hard, not giving up, coping with the pain, the nerves and the anguished hope to be one of the six selected to go to Rio. You have made it Emma, we are all so proud of you and wish you the very best of luck. We have followed your story over the past year, dreamed with you and now celebrate with you.

Enjoy the Olympic Experience Emma – you deserve it. We are all cheering you on.

St Michael and All Angels Parish Church

Dear Friends The summer is coming to an end, there is change in the air and for many there will be new beginnings, especially in the education sector. In Judaism, during September, (not a fixed date), there is the celebration of Rosh Hashanah; the Jewish New Year Festival. We know that our January New Year gives us the opportunity to reflect on the previous year, make New Year resolutions and then hope the New Year will be a good one. There are echoes of this in Judaism, for Rosh Hashanah is a judgement day, when Jews believe that God balances a person’s good deeds over the last year against their bad deeds, and decides what the next year will be like for them. There is a great opportunity to reflect on the previous year, asking relevant questions that help people to align their priorities and more importantly to ask for forgiveness for wrongdoings.

There is no doubt that it is good to reflect on our actions and be aware of their effects on ourselves and others and it is probably best for our well-being to be in the habit of reflection on a regular basis. Nowadays the practice of cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) and the discipline of mindfulness have come to the fore to help people become more aware of themselves and to help them deal with actions and situations that affect their well-being. The practice of self-awareness is very much a part of the Christian tradition and can be found in St Ignatius’ Daily Examen. As you may surmise many books have been written on the Examen but, put very simply, through a reflection on the day one can learn to note God’s absence and presence through feelings of desolation and consolation. This aids in recognising where we drift in and out of God’s presence through our thoughts, words and actions and we can learn to highlight those areas that God wishes us to deal with in his love and grace. It helps us to become aware of ourselves but more importantly to be aware of God and his presence at work in our lives, for ‘we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.’ (Rom 8:28).

I have a nagging feeling that I have written in the magazines about the Examen before but it is always good to be reminded that every day should be the start of new day, new year and a new life with the one who loves us through Jesus Christ, his Son. His love brings transformation and well-being and it is free and on offer to everyone.

Love and blessings Lesley

COUNTRYMATTERS

As the changeable weather contin-ued past midsummer, haymaking became a lottery, a spin of the coin, to mow or not to mow, that was the question. Eventually the answer to the question was yes, and the grass, now long and lush, was cut down, ready to be made into hay. The weather forecast looked fairly optimistic, warm and dry and the hope was that it would hold for a few days.

Haymaking, unlike silage making, takes time as the grass must be spread out and fluffed up regular-ly to allow it to dry out. It requires warmth and sunshine to extract the moisture but it soon became obvious that the jet stream had other ideas. The weather forecasters had based their predictions on the jet stream going north, taking the depressions

with it, but two days after the grass was mowed, they were telling us that rain was approaching. There was no option but to call in the baling and wrapping team and abandon the haymaking and go for silage bales instead. By the end of the day the job was done, the field was covered with shiny black bales, self contained packs of fodder, pro-tected from the elements. We could rest easy that evening.

The next day Will had to get cracking and stack up these bales in the field before the local pheas-ants, crows and jackdaws spotted them and decided to investi-gate. Silage, whether made in a clamp or

inside the wrapping of black plastic as a silage bale, requires anaero-bic fermentation, totally isolated away from the air. Exposure to oxygen causes the silage to spoil and act like half an apple left out on a plate. Within a few days the exposed surface starts to rot, and this is exactly what happens to the grass in the silage bales if they get

IS IT GOING TO BE HAY OR SILAGE?

punctured by the claws and beaks of inquisitive birds looking for a meal.

Will borrowed a special type of grab for the JCB which has rotating tines. These roll along the bales instead of dragging so that they are much less likely to damage the plastic whilst they are being moved. Bales close to the gate were quickly moved and stacked up by Will on the JCB, but it soon becomes necessary to stack them on a trailer and bring a full load down and repeat as necessary until they were all done. If they are fetched individually, you spend more time running up and down the field than actually stacking bales, a waste of time and diesel. Anoth-er important thing when stacking silage bales is to stack them on their ends rather than the way they are made in the fields, where they look like giant plastic covered sausage rolls. This is to deter the aforemen-tioned pheasants, crows and jack-daws. Due to the way the bales are

wrapped, there is a lot more plastic covering on the ends of the bales. If the bales are standing on their ends, it makes it much harder for the birds to penetrate the plastic with their beaks when they are standing on them, and their feet are much less likely to make puncture holes.

Two weeks later, a plume of hot air arrived, so Will mowed the rest of the grass on the Sunday, spread it out to bake in the sun, fluffed it up twice on the Monday and it was baled on the Tuesday before it rained on the Wednesday. Will decided it was best to leave most of them where they were, and just brought home a few for the cattle indoors. He tells me it isn’t the best hay he has ever made, but at least we do have some now. With the silage in the clamp, the silage bales and now the hay, we have quite a bit of summer goodness wrapped up ready for the winter.

Beds, Brexit and Barcares

Jim SneeIn February I wrote what I hoped was a rather provocative article in the Dialogue - championing the case for Brexit. It worked because it generated some response, pretty much all of it espousing the virtues of the case to remain. There was much ‘pub’ banter and discussion too! Come the day of the big vote in June Carly and I had left the country. We were enjoying a break in the heart of the EU itself [Barcares, South West France, to be more precise] where we have a little family ‘Shed in the Med’. Consequently we missed the immediacy of the shock

and horror that greeted the final result of the Referendum. Our political elite and their arrogant mates in Brussels took an unexpected bloody nose, no bad thing.

Happily, in our neck of the woods in la belle France, the reaction of the locals to our collective national decision was somewhat different. To a man [and woman] our local friends, neighbours, shopkeepers, et al, were queuing up to shake my hand and tell me that they too wanted out – ‘Frexit’ they called it. Sadly, I doubt that Mr. Hollande, or his successor, no doubt soon to be the diminutive Sarkozy, will give them the chance of a vote. C’est la vie. There’s no guarantee of course, that even if they were to be given the opportunity, the result would go the way my friends would like. Paris and their politicians are long way from the South West – just as the London po-litical bubble is divorced from the rest of the UK. However, they might not have to wait too long though because ‘events’ could well come to their rescue.

Despite the horrors of terrorist atrocities, Syria, Afganistan, and Brexit, etc, which have all been dominating the news in recent weeks and months, the problems in Greece, Italy, EU bank debt, etc, have not gone away and continue to mount and fester. Whatever Merkel, the IMF and the European Bank say or do, monetary union is doomed to failure. On top of that, France is not in good shape either. Despite the unsurprising fall in value of Sterling against the Euro [temporary only and down just 10%] you can now buy a full blown - and very grand - chateau in Brittany, the Loire valley, Bordeaux, or pretty much anywhere you wish in France [short of Paris or Nice] for the price of a Diseworth house – can’t be bad and maybe a good opportunity, for those brave enough, to opt for a change in lifestyle and climate! But beware, many things are broken in that wonderful country. It’s not all cheese, wine, patisseries and sunshine over there.

We needed to buy a new bed for our little Shed in the Med. Plenty of cafes, restaurants and cheese shops around but furniture outlets are few and far between and those that do exist are fear-fully expensive and offer little choice. The French seem to live to enjoy life, their food and their wine – houses are for sleeping in and not much more. They seem to have little interest in décor and domestic comfort but who’s to say that they’ve got it all wrong? Anyway, a new bed was needed so we went to find one. After much prodding, poking and lying on various candidates we alighted on a final choice. Now we had just to pay for said bed, or so I thought.

Page 25: No 219 September 2016...Locksmith AA Locksmiths 01332 410 060 or07779 287 375 Milkman Larry Hill 01509 502455 Organic Produce Manor Organic Farm 01509 646413 Pest Control Pest - Away

‘So monsieur would like this mattress. What about the base, would madam and monsieur like this base too?’‘What do you mean?’ says I, perplexed, ‘Doesn’t the indicated price include the whole thing?’‘Mais non, monsieur, in France only the mattress price is indicated, the base is not included’. Thus, in one second flat, the price of our bed had almost doubled. But it didn’t stop there.

‘And would monsieur like an ‘eadboard to go with the bed?’ enquired our attentive salesman.‘Of course, the one fixed to the bed, we’ll take that, no need to swap’, says I.‘Aha’ says the man, ‘But in France the ‘eadboard fitted to the bed is not part of the bed. Zut alors, you must pay more, ‘eadboards are not included’. More euros gone.

‘And what about the legs to support the bed, would monsieur like some legs also?’You’re ahead of me now, of course the legs were extra. You couldn’t make it up.‘Pierre’, says our man to his passing assistant, ‘Are there four legs or six supporting this bed?’Pierre inspected the underside of our chosen bed and advised that it stood on four legs. These were duly added to the bill. ‘We’ve cracked it at last’… I think…., ‘job done’. But not quite.

Delivery from the shop to the house was required. Last year my trusty French Ford Transit, an ideal vehicle for the purpose of shifting beds, [vis. a Renault Espace] had broken down in France. It took a Renault main dealer garage three weeks to fix a broken auxiliary drive belt [fan belt to you and me – about 2 hours’ work, if that, here in the UK] but that’s another story and I digress, except to say that the Espace is no more. Suffice to say that my present car, a standard size Audi estate, couldn’t accommodate a double bed and a mattress to suit. Delivery therefore cost a further extortionate £100 and took ten days to achieve. Even then, the delivery team missed their first scheduled drop off date and refused to take the bed upstairs when they did finally turn up [health and safety, they said]. Oh, and they forgot to put the ‘eadboard in their van so had to come back later with it. And when I came to screw the legs to the base of the bed, low and behold, six were required – we were missing two. We spent our first installed night sleeping over a pile of books propping up one end. Why were neither of us surprised?!

In over 45 years of spending time in France [both work and leisure], nothing has changed. It’s both endearing and frustrating at the same time. You get used to living with it and rolling with the punches. Beds are not a big deal in the scale of things but the story typifies the difference in culture that exists between our nations. Long may it last is my view - and one thing’s for sure, the French aren’t going to change their ways any time soon, any more than are we. No, we’re all better off as occasional lovers, not as a married couple. And, if we hadn’t bought a new bed, such was the cost of the thing that we might have been able to buy a chateau instead. The whole village could then have come to stay in various of our many rooms – but you’d have needed to bring your own beds as we can’t afford any more of our own.

Diseworth Open GardensHow lucky we were that Sunday, 3rd July turned out to be a real summer’s day, following weeks of cold and wet weather. Nearly 250 visitors came to the village to visit a variety of gardens, which all looked wonderful and were much admired. Many, many thanks to all those who worked so hard in difficult conditions to get their gardens looking so beautiful. During the day there was a constant stream of visitors to the church, not only for the refreshments, but to view all the crafts on display, thanks to the Craft Group which meets regularly in the village. We are fortunate that we have so many talented people in Diseworth.

Cream teas provided by Rosemary, Terry and Mary were extremely popular and much enjoyed, as well as the plant stall manned by Pat. Thanks to Maitland for designing the posters and signs. The raffle for a trug basket filled with gardening related items was won by a resident of Kegworth.

The day concluded with a Songs of Praise service in the church.

Family History Visitors, Summer 2016 What I am tempted to call ‘The Diseworth Diaspora’ has been in evidence again this summer as more visitors from different parts of the world have come to the village in search of their ancestors. This year we have had more researchers from Australia (with strong links also to South Africa), from Ireland, and an old friend from Braunstone.

Our visitors from Australia in June were Marilyn Murray and her husband. Marilyn is anoth-er member of the ever-expanding Mee family, and also has links to the Jarroms and Muggle-stons through the marriage of her ancestor Robert Mee to a Mary Bakewell in 1820. In the past, we have had contacts with descendants of the Mees in Canada and more locally here in Leicestershire, but they were a large and widespread family (or, more likely, several families) and separating them all out is no easy task.

Marilyn introduced us to a branch we have not encountered before, largely because they moved to the London area before the first Censuses were compiled, and from there, some members emigrated to South Africa. She is hopeful that we can link her family to the Mees who appear in the deeds of the Heritage Centre, and explain the nature of the link with the Jarroms, whom she knows as ‘cousins’ only from a letter received in 1930!

Our old friend was Alwyne Watson, who first visited us in 2014 as a result of the publication of the ‘Lest We Forget’ series of books detailing all the local men who were killed in the course of WW1. His mother was a Barnes, and one of her relatives is commemorated on a gravestone in Diseworth Parish Church graveyard as part of the wider Palmer family. This time Alwyne came with his wife, son and daughter-in-law and they laid a small wreath on the grave to coincide with the hundredth anniversary of the Battle of the Somme in July.

Our latest visitors, in a quest for an ancestor believed to have been born in Diseworth in about 1545, were from Ireland. They first contacted our vicar, Tony, who gave them our details. They had a good look round the Parish Church, and by the time they had had lunch, I had managed to locate a key to the Heritage Centre so that we could see if their family, the Parsons, appeared in any of the Parish records. To my pleasant surprise, they did, though not till long after their ancestor had moved to Ireland. I got an even bigger surprise when the group introduced themselves when we met outside the Church – our visitors were the Earl and Countess of Rosse and their English cousin, Sir John Parsons, who lives in Northamp-tonshire. Trying to trace further details of this family will be a most fascinating, though not simple, project.

The family seat of the Earls of Rosse is Birr Castle in County Offaly. It has been in their family since the 17th century, but its origins go back much further, and it has seen several periods of building and internal remodelling since. It enjoys a magnificent position above the River Camcor and is surrounded by very beautiful grounds with fine trees and rare specimen shrubs. The Birr Castle website can readily be found on the Internet.

LONG WHATTON & DISEWORTH PARISH COUNCIL NEWSAugust Parking: The lawful position of the Police and NWLDC - will respond to any ob-structive parking - e.g. pavement blockage (forcing pedestrian users onto the road) and driveway blockages.

Leicestershire Police has made a number of enquiries with partner agencies with regard to holidaymakers’ cars being parked in the village, albeit legally, and they have sug-gested a pro-active approach to encourage parishioners to report their concerns directly to Leicestershire County Council (The greater number of concerns reported directly may have more of an effect than just one being raised by the Parish Council).

Contact information:Customer Service Centre (Highways) Tel: 0116 305 [email protected] To report a problem online: http://www.leicestershire.gov.uk/popular-now/report-a-road-problemThe Parish Council would like to monitor the number of complaints made to LCC about this issue in order to support concerns and progression, therefore, please could you copy your email onto [email protected].

East Midlands Airport - Public Meeting. EMA has offered to attend a public meeting at Diseworth to do a presentation to mem-bers of the public interested in how the EMA Surface Water System works and answer any questions that any interested parties may have. This will take place on Saturday 22nd October 2016, for the presentation to begin at 10.30am and Q and As to follow. This will be held at Diseworth Village Hall, Hall Gate, Diseworth.

Diseworth Allotments – Full Plots NOW available – if you would like an allotment plot, please contact the Clerk on [email protected].

Long Whatton Community Speed Watch - Following concerns raised by local residents of Long Whatton regarding speeding traffic through the Village, in particular at West End, the Parish Council agreed to run another Community Speed Watch project. The project started on 27th June and continued for two weeks.

Some locations did not yield a large number of vehicles exceeding 35mph although a large number did slow down as drivers spotted the fluorescent yellow jackets. However, West End near Lester Court was very busy. At this location Speed Watch teams typically clocked thirty vehicles or more per hour travelling at speeds considerably over the 30mph limit, including many over 50mph. The evidence collected will highlight this area for further attention from the Police.

While the speed humps and parked cars do slow most of the traffic down, it was observed that there are still some drivers who have no consideration for anyone's safety, even by the school. Many drivers also treat the last speed hump going out of the village, particularly towards Diseworth, as the de-fac-to end of the 30mph limit.

The Parish Council would like to thank all the volunteers who have been involved in the Community Speed Watch Scheme; with-out them the scheme wouldn't have been possible. All the data collected has now been passed on to the Police.

Some little time ago there was something called a referendum announced by the Prime Minister of the day to decide if the UK would stay a member of the European Union or would leave. On the run in to the vote, many luminaries from the political establishment made various statements for and against the proposition giving all manner of reason why it was best to stay or best to go. A good number of the pontifications were well meant and clearly from the heart but quite a few were not and were designed to “scaremonger”. Any way, the due date arrived and the nation turned out on mass and made their decision.

Outcome

Much to many people’s surprise the Brexit camp won by 51.9% to 48.1%, close, but a clear mandate. The out camp’s people had won the argument. So what’s happened to the various protagonists since June 23rd?

The Blue Side of the House of CommonsDavid Cameron (Anti Brexit)Immediately resigned as Prime Minister and was off out of the firing line of taking the “next steps”

Boris Johnson (Pro Brexit)First in line to take over as PM and do the deed for the Brexit camp. Fully supported by Michael Gove.

Michael Gove (Pro Brexit)Big time supporter of Boris and then not. Withdrew his support over night with a statement that BJ wasn’t up to the PM job.

Boris JohnsonImmediately withdrew from standing for PM with MG’s Bowie firmly between his shoulder blades.

Michael GoveStood for position of PM and was firmly walloped coming a poor third against Theresa May and Andrea Leadsom (who?). Perhaps made a miscalculation in withdrawing support for BJ. Now no longer a Minister.

Theresa May (Anti Brexit well sort of but also a bit on the fence)Stood for PM against MG and Andrea Leadsom (+ a couple of others who didn’t actually stand in the end) and is now PM fully in charge and tasked with sorting Brexit, whatever Brexit might look like..

Andrea Leadsom (Pro Brexit)A tier 2 politician who stood for PM then backed out of the contest after a misguided statement about having or not having children. Now a full Cabinet Minister

Boris JohnsonNow full Cabinet Minister as Foreign Secretary.

George Osborne (anti Brexit) Chancellor of the ExchequerPromised hell, fire and economic damnation with cuts, cuts and more cuts if pro Brexit won. Now no longer a Minister.

Ian Duncan Smith (pro Brexit)A big hitter in the pro Brexit camp. Now no longer a Minister. So in the Blue camp we have Cameron, Osborne and IDS out, we have Boris

standing for PM withdrawing but now a full Minister, we have Gove with a rep-utation shot to pieces. Theresa as PM and the Leadsom woman standing then withdrawing for PM now a full Minister. There are others but the list here paints a picture.

The Red side of the House of Commons

The opposition lead by Jeremy Corbyn (anti Brexit, well sort of but in truth not sort of but not sure but not exactly enthusiastic about being anti).Had to sack one of his shadow cabinet after being criticised as “lacklustre” in the Brexit debate, 63 others followed with resignations. Was on the wrong end of a massive vote of no confidence from his parliamentary party. Hasn’t resigned despite lack of support in Parliament and now into a further election with party members for Party Leader. Currently embroiled in a legal argument with the Judiciary as to who can or can’t vote in this upcoming election.

The word is if he wins the Labour Party is no longer an effective opposition party and may well self destruct.

Continuing

The UKIP side of the Political SpectrumNigel FarageConceded probable defeat at about 00-30 on 24th June. A close run thing but believed the anti’s had won the day. Withdrew the statement about 1 hour later looking a bit of a prawn but the numbers show his view was supported by the majority.

Went to Brussels to the EU Parliament and told them “you’re not laughing at me now” in a speech to the assembly. Didn’t get a great reception but certainly told them “what for”.

Resigned as leader of UKIP.

Does UKIP now self-destruct as its task is now completed?

Cyril the FoxStill a much respected guest writer to the DD As a literary big hitter in The Dialogue I know my articles are well received as balanced and objective. Not even I could have written a work of fiction that would come close to matching the above narrative. I wish I had as I’m sure it would become a standard text in the universities of the world of how to manage a political nuclear bomb called Brexit.

How the mighty are fallen.

Could you spare just a few hours a month to help contribute to the ongoing success of our wonderful village magazine? We’re looking for more Diseworthians to join the Dialogue committee and help out with overseeing all the advertising that we include in the magazine. These adverts are essential as, alongside generous dona-tions from villagers, we rely on adverts from local businesses to help cover the costs of producing the Dialogue ten times a year.

Getting involved isn’t a massive undertaking and it’s flexible, so it should be easy to fit around other commitments. HEALTH PAGE When are Whole Grains not Whole Grains? We are faced with endless choice when we shop for food, and we have been told over and over that whole grains are much better than refined grains. But are products on the shelves that state they are whole grain really as good as they sound.

Many of the products we can buy do contain whole grains but in many of them the grains, seeds and nuts have been ground up or puffed. When grains are ground into flour or puffed, even if they are 100% whole grains, they are digested more rapidly and more completely. This increases their glycaemic index and leaves fewer leftovers for the important friendly bacteria in the colon. This also applies to nuts and seeds. Researchers tested this by dividing up a group of volunteers into two groups. One group ate grains, seeds, nuts and beans in their natural whole state and the other group ate the exact same foods, but they had been processed into nut butters, flours, houmous and bean paste. The result of the trial was that the intact whole grain, nut, seed and bean group doubled their bowel movement size whereas the ground up whole grain group saw no change. Both groups ate the same amount of food, but in different forms. The reason is that when you eat whole foods in their least processed state, there is much more in the way of bits of food left over for your gut flora to eat.

It is a little known fact that the bulk of stool is not undigested food but bacteria, trillions of them. This increase in stool size is quite a good indicator of a gut with a healthy and flourishing microbiome, and a healthier gut generally. The gut bacteria need lots of fibre to feed on and one way to decide if a product on the shelf is gut friendly is to apply the five to one rule. Take bread as an example. Use the Nutritional Facts label on the packet to see if the ratio of grams of carbohydrate to grams of dietary fibre is five or less. The packet may say “multigrain,” “100% wheat,” or “stone ground” and not pass the five to one rule. For example, a packet of bread may list per serving 30 grams of carbohydrate and 3 grams of

Page 43: No 219 September 2016...Locksmith AA Locksmiths 01332 410 060 or07779 287 375 Milkman Larry Hill 01509 502455 Organic Produce Manor Organic Farm 01509 646413 Pest Control Pest - Away

fibre. The maths is easy as 30 divided by 3 is 10. 10 is more than 5 so that one goes back on the shelf. But if the next one along says it has 15 grams of carbohydrate and 3 grams of fibre per serving that passes the test. This rule can be applied to other foods such as breakfast cereals.

Whole foods such as nuts, seeds, grains and oats should all pass the test easily and are very beneficial. Brown and other naturally coloured rice are preferable to white, and whole wheat pasta is better produced these days and more palatable than the rough mealy types of the past. Even popcorn is a whole food if it is made in the home and you use natural flavourings. And some quick cooking grains in convenience packets can give you a healthy meal, as long as you read the label to check for additives. There are also a number of naturally quick cooking grains such as amaranth, millet, regular oats and quinoa. Three servings of whole grains a day is the optimum daily intake, which may sound a lot, but it is only 100grams of cooked rice, 50 grams of cold cereal and 1 slice of bread. Become creative, and add variety, your gut will thank you for it.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact Person Emma Taylor Company Name Voluntary Action LeicesterShire Telephone Number 0116 257 5042 Email Address [email protected] Web site address www.valonline.org.uk New £1.94m charity project to change lives of young people Local charity Voluntary Action LeicesterShire (VAL) is pleased to announce that funding has been secured to launch a new project to support some of Leicester and Leicestershire’s most at risk young people. The project, called the Youth Employability Support (YES) project, will aim to transform the futures of 400 young people between the ages of 15 and 24 who are currently the furthest from being able to move into employment. It will focus on young people who face extra barriers to work, such as mental or physical health difficulties, homelessness, disabilities or being a carer, but it will also be open to any young person in Leicester or Leicestershire who is not in employment, education or training. VAL Infrastructure Executive Manager Simon Jenner explained saying: “This project has been developed over a period of more than a year alongside eight partners and the young people we’ll be supporting. This means that the project will be able to deliver innovative, person-centred solutions based on what young people really need.” Unlike traditional services, the YES Project will deliver a bespoke journey for young people. YES Project staff will reach out to young people, assess their needs and then work with the young person to develop a support package that works for them. Support on offer will include one to one mentoring, work places, creative short courses, team building and more. These services will be delivered by the YES Project’s eight delivery partners: The Prince’s Trust, Seed Creativity, Soft Touch Arts, Twenty Twenty, Leicestershire Cares, Bangladesh Youth and Cultural Shomiti, The Bridge and Warwickshire College. The YES Project will launch in September. To find out more, visit us online at https://www.valonline.org.uk/project-change-lives-young-people. This Project is jointly funded by the Big Lottery Fund and the European Social Fund.
