OUR MISSIONThe Center for Enriched Living

exists so that people with developmental disabilities can be

fully included in the community, achieve personal success and enjoy

a good quality of life.

OUR VISIONWe see a future where every person

with a developmental disability is an equal, valued, and contributing

member of the community.

4 2014 Annual Report

CEL has a simple philosophy – there are no limits to what a person can achieve – especially people with developmental disabilities.

As we quietly celebrated thirty years as an independent, 501(c)3 agency, we have been increasingly looking towards the future. Thirty years ago we didn’t have our own building and served people with mild to moderate disabilities. We didn’t have the means to support members with physical disabilities who use wheelchairs and walkers or have sensory disabilities like autism.

Today, we are looking at fully realizing our mission of being an inclusive organization. We are moving beyond providing accessible spaces that the Americans with Disabilities Act ensures, to promoting equality for all CEL members by incorporating Universal Design throughout our building. Universal Design offers equality –an environment that works for everyone and accommodates a wide range of abilities in a way that is seamless. For the past five years we have been discussing Universal Design and that dream is now becoming a reality. With your help, we are removing barriers so that all members will have more opportunities for greater independence.

CEL sees a future where every person with a developmental disability is an equal, valued, and contributing member of the community. 2014 provided a year for us to reflect and begin the ground work on how to provide the best environment for members of today as well as tomorrow. We’re looking at how we can remove barriers – physical as well as attitudinal.

You have been there to help us ensure that we are building a better tomorrow. Your support allows our staff and volunteers to focus on creating an environment for CEL members to thrive. Here we learn, grow and connect – together. Friendships are made. Independence is fostered. Skills are learned. Goals are achieved. New experiences are shared.

We thank you for your belief in CEL members and never putting a limit on what can be accomplished.

Here at CEL, members are given the tools and resources to make their own decisions. From the programs they participate in, to what takes place within the programs – CEL members make the plans! Each year we serve teens, adults and seniors, seven days a week with day, evening and weekend programs designed to fit a wide variety of interests and budgets.

Many members find CEL in their teens – from an after-school satellite program or during our summer camp. Members grow with CEL and CEL has grown with members – helping as they develop new skills, achieve goals and share experiences – amongst friends.

As teen members continue to grow and transition into adulthood, CEL continues to provide programs that fit their individual needs – with two adult day programs REACH and ELA (in partnership with NSSRA), and night and weekend recreational programs.

CEL celebrates the unique contributions of everyone. Programs provide members with opportunities to express themselves – whether it’s using a creative medium like art or music, or advocating for themselves in a relationship class or Member Advisory Committee.

Thanks to your support, we expanded our transportation options and offered a more robust scholarship program for members in need. This is imperative when 84% of the members we serve are low income and with the overall lack of public transportation.

Summer Camp 2014 – the most exciting time at CEL – saw more than 30 campers, 14 of them new members, between the ages of 13-22 enjoy a fun-filled summer with trips to local farms, pools, nature centers and more. Summer camp gives members the opportunity to have a fun experience with friends, an opportunity often missed for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

The growth of our REACH Adult Day Program has been exciting. With an average of 26 members a day, REACH offers a place for adults to successfully continue their path towards success – connected to the larger community. REACH members have a full calendar year of experiences, events and opportunities to learn job skills, relationship building, culinary arts, creative expression, community service, and more!

“We always thought that Dan would be a great greeter at Wal-Mart,” Dan’s father, Chuck reminisces. Dan’s infectious smile and hearty greeting are the first things you notice about him. He loves music, food, Suze Orman on TV and Delilah on the radio. He also loves coming to The Center for Enriched Living (CEL). “He would live here (at CEL) if he could,” Dan’s mother, Aléna laughs.

Dan has been coming to CEL for two years. He began with the Monday Night Bowling program, moving on to an exciting Summer Camp experience as well as weekend programs and dances. But his transition from high school loomed. “We never really did the play date thing, so he never really had peers that he interacted with,” Aléna says. They were looking for a place where Dan would be around friends his age where he could enjoy a rich, full life. “We knew the REACH program would be a great fit. Not sitting in a workshop setting building some widget. Dan wouldn’t be happy there,” Aléna adds.

Dan is happy coming to the REACH program at CEL. He enjoys new experiences with his peers. Dan loves going out in the community – shopping and cooking are two of his favorite activities; so REACH’s Shop ‘n Cook class is a perfect fit for Dan. The group selects a healthy recipe together and then go to the grocery store and purchase what they need. They return to CEL to cook and, of course, enjoy their dish.

REACH allows Dan to participate in a wide variety of activities and build his self-confidence.

His current goal is to branch out and try new experiences. He has gained skills that have helped him as he continues to grow and mature.

Work is also important to Dan’s sense of self. Last year The Woolenware Company/PersonaliTees, a t-shirt printing company had a large order to fill and hired Dan on for temporary help. Dan had many responsibilities starting with catching the printed shirts as they came off the conveyor belt and placing them on top of each other in piles of 12. He would then fold the shirts into a printers fold, then place 6 piles of 12 in a box and carry the box to the shipping department. “It was great getting to know and work with Dan. He would bring his lunch and enjoyed having lunch with the other employees. He is a very personable young man,” Dan’s supervisor, Gail, shared.

Dan also has an entrepreneurial spirit. Currently, he’s Dan the Shredding Man, working from home - and in the community - shredding confidential documents for his clients, one of which he’s had for nearly two-and-a-half years. He likes to finish the job, not leaving until all the documents are shredded. Dan’s parents both want him to continue gaining new skills so that one day he will be able to live more independently in a group home within the community.

Thanks to you, Dan has made strides at CEL and enjoys the camaraderie he feels with his peers and staff. “If I were to create my own dream program, this would be it,” Aléna beams.

Dan is a social butterfly and is always ready to have a conversation.

“HE WOULD LIVE HERE IF HE COULD”

A CULTURE OFCOLLABORAT ION

We promote a culture of collaboration at CEL – working in partnership with and as a complement to families, schools, agencies, organizations and businesses within the community. CEL members live, work and play in the community and we work with our partners so that members are not only in the community – but of the community. Working and playing side-by-side with all of us – living life to their fullest.

AND GOING STRONG YEARS 30Things could have been very different. A little over 30 years ago, board leaders Gary Kash, Rob Vihon and Richard Worsek stood in front of a group of CEL families and said that there was a possibility that this program for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities - at that time, under the umbrella of another organization - would no longer be available. “The reaction of the parents and families was so strong. There was no other place that provided the emotional, social and educational connection for members. The need was so great. The service here was unique and relevant,” Gary Kash remembers. “At that moment, I was compelled to be a part of the solution.”

Page 13: NO LIMITS · 4 2014 Annual Report CEL has a simple philosophy – there are no limits to what a person can achieve – especially people with developmental disabilities. As we quietly

13

And part of the solution he was. The Center for Enriched Living became an independent agency and has grown leaps and bounds in the three decades that followed. Now serving hundreds of members annually, CEL stands strong and continues to grow. “That CEL still exists and is fulfilling its mission is one of my biggest accomplishments,” says Gary. With a small budget of $150,000 CEL slowly grew and moved to rented locations in Highland Park and Deerfield, but bigger things were on the horizon. A permanent home was needed and our first capital campaign, chaired by Gary, established our building in Riverwoods. And now Gary is bringing a second capital campaign to a close. Soon Universal Design throughout the building will be a reality and CEL members will enjoy that fuller, richer life without unnecessary barriers in the way.

His passion for CEL is palpable. “There are so many causes that someone can be involved with. Cancer, juvenile diabetes, Parkinson’s disease, the list is endless. One of the key reasons I stay involved here is our families always have a need for CEL and we don’t have the same footprint of the other charities and the need continues to be great. The impact is profound and hearing from families and seeing the members, that keeps me coming back.” His passion has inspired many, in particular, his wife, Lori.

After retiring in 2008, Lori wanted to spend time giving back and chose to volunteer at CEL. “I first volunteered in the after-school bowling program, but then I started in the REACH Adult Day Program and loved it,” Lori says. REACH was in its infancy with about three members each day, just three days a week. Today, REACH has 47 members with approximately 26 each day, five days a week. “Over the past six years, it has

been exciting to watch the members choose such a wide variety of activities. REACH offers many different activities each day – both morning and afternoon. When we only had 3 members we couldn’t do that. We’re now watching the members choose what they want to do. It’s enriching. It’s through those activities that they are learning life and social skills and their sense of self.”

You can see your impact the minute you enter the door, when you volunteer at CEL. “CEL is small enough that even the smallest efforts make a big difference,” Gary adds. And the Kashes’ efforts have made a huge difference. There are so many ways a person can get involved and have an impact – whether joining a committee or the board of directors, or in program volunteering directly with members. The opportunities are pretty much endless, but the memories you make…

Lori sums it up nicely. “Sharing a member’s “aha” moment brings tears to my eyes. I get emotional. I remember one in particular where we were volunteering at Whitehall Nursing Home and going to the patients there offering them books and magazines. One member was very nervous about knocking on the door and introducing herself and going in. But we practiced what she would say and she did it. Afterwards, she was so excited and proud, she turned to me and said ‘I did it!’” Gary adds, “In so many ways, CEL is a part of me. For 30+ years, I’ve done what I had to do to help it grow and succeed, knowing that my personal involvement has had this significant, meaningful impact. I work and volunteer at other places and know I make an impact. But I walk in here and I FEEL it – I see it.”

A Volunteer Story

In March of 2015, Lori was recognized as a REACH volunteer by Lake County Cares

as One of Ten Outstanding

Volunteers of the Year - selected from more than 140 nonprofit

organizations in Lake County!

Physical barriers – doors not being wide enough to enter without assistance, harsh lights and sounds that are overwhelming to those with sensory issues and attitudinal barriers – the barriers that exist when others make decisions and assumptions about people with developmental disabilities. These barriers hold back CEL members from leading their fullest, richest, most independent lives.

Five years ago, we started campaigning to open our doors wider with the goal of removing the physical barriers within our building. You allowed us to envision a building renovation that would create an environment that works regardless of ability and have a transformational effect on members’ lives. The renovation would also create an awareness and open the eyes of the community around us – showcasing that there should be no limit placed on what people with developmental disabilities can accomplish.

Because of you, we are raising the bar. Twenty-five years after the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), it’s become apparent that accessibility does not mean equality. We are moving beyond creating ADA compliant spaces to incorporating Universal Design throughout our building. Universal Design offers equality – an environment that works for everyone and accommodates a wide range of abilities in a way that is seamless.

With your help, inclusion will be the new standard.

To watch our video and see how you can help us raise the final $200,000 to furnish and equip CEL with universally designed equipment, appliances and furniture, log on to www.CenterForEnrichedLiving.org today!

Thank you to all donors who have already participated! See page 30 for a listing of donors who donated as of 12/31/14.

OUR CAMPA IGNAt CEL, we see the “I can” in every member who enters our doors. Your support allows us to identify ways that each unique individual can reach their potential. Painfully, we also see barriers that exist that may hinder their independence.

To date, we have raised $3.3 millionto transform the lives of CEL members through Universal Design. We are grateful for a strong committee who throughout the years, kept pushing and opening the doors because they are committed to removing unnecessary barriers and helping CEL members enjoy that fuller, richer life.

Thank you to Gary Kash, Noel Elfant, Byron Holden and Larry Gutkin who have led various stages in the campaign and to the entire committee who tirelessly gave again and again.

We couldn’t sustain CEL’s warm, welcoming environment without you – our forward-thinking donors who support the enriched living, growing and thriving that happens here. Because of you we are able to create an atmosphere with limitless potential for members, staff and our organization. We do not receive federal or state funding. We are able to be flexible and respond to members’ interests and adapt programs to meet their needs.

CAMPA IGN DONORS

Thank you to our earliest supporters of the Opening the Doors Campaign. Through the generosity of the donors listed below, CEL quietly raised $3.3 million for Universal Design in our building in Riverwoods.

We invite you to add your name to this list by helping us raise the last $200,000 to finish and furnish the building during the Public Phase of the campaign, which began in February 2015.
