Middle School News

As the school year draws to a close it is appropriate to reflect on what our students have undertaken, achieved and experienced; much of which has been documented in other forums. We must congratulate everyone on their endeavours and best efforts, as there are so many highly accomplished students in so many areas – it has been a pleasure.

The final week of school will be a chance to do something different, as formal instruction comes to an end, with the highlight being the End of Year Concert for Years 8 and 9. This event was first held in 2014, which allowed staff and students to spend the last hours of ‘school’ celebrating and enjoying the various performances. Planning for a bigger and better concert is well underway. Students will receive their reports at 2:20pm and be dismissed at the normal time of 2:25pm.

A reminder to families of students in Year 9 2016: In recognition of a number of pressures which impact on students and their ability to attend off-site and over-night events, the Year 9 Camp which usually runs in Term 2, has been replaced with an alternative program. It will still have a focus on building resilience, working in teams and similar, but will take place over two days in February; one on-site and one off-site. More detailed information will be provided by Mr Mike Elliott in a letter to families at the commencement of the school year. We believe it is important that all students attend, so we are providing timely information about what is planned.

Our new Year 8 students will attend their Transition Camp at the same time (21 - 24 February). However, this time in a new venue at Aldinga, which will allow all the students to attend the camp together. Information about this camp has already been fowarded to families.I thank all the staff who have worked with the students in Years 8 and 9, in so many capacities and look forward to even more exciting achievements in 2016.

From the Principal

We are certainly finishing the year off on a very positive and happy note. Nearly all of our students performed exceedingly well as some of them have achieved amazing success. There are far too many students to congratulate individually, but I believe it is appropriate for me to congratulate the students who have recently received awards:

• Rebecka Jury who has been selected to play for the State U19 Softball Team.• Ella Nixon-Dores who represented South Australia at the Pacific School Games.• Hibra Shujaat who won the 2015 Eden Prize Competition for her essay on “What can governments do

to make the world a better and happier place?”.• Team “Unorthodox Unicorns” – Gracie Bennett, Paige Bowers, Claire Collins, Caitlin MacFarlane,

Hannah McGrath, Ashlee Styles, Amelia Thompson, Georgia Tucker and Hannah Watson. These students competed in the First Lego League Competition and were awarded the Research Award.

• Team “Let it Grow” - Skylah Armfield, Cassie Barrow, Laura Cole, Jean Davis, Ellen Demaagd, Evelyn Denton, Jade Doherty, Emma Fraser, Emily Ritson and Sarah Wittwer. These girls won the South Australian First Lego League Competition. Yes, they are the South Australian 2015 Champions! Last weekend they competed in the national competition held in Sydney and they have been placed in the top 10 teams who will be competing internationally in 2016. What an end to the school year!

This term we have been very busy preparing for 2016. We believe we have everything in place for a smooth start to the new school year and hope to see every student on Monday 1 February. If, for family reasons, your daughter cannot attend on the first day of school, please inform us as soon as possible so that she may be included in our Census.Thank you for your continued support throughout the year, it means a lot to me. I wish you have a very relaxing and safe festive season.

Year 10 Mock InterviewsSeventy Year 10 PLP students participated in mock interviews where they applied for a fictitious casual job by providing interviewers with a cover letter and resumé, then they were interviewed for the position. After the interview the students received both verbal and written feedback from the interviewers.

Thank you to the interviewers for donating their time and energy. It is much appreciated by students (although they find the process unnerving) in preparing for their future. Thanks to David O’Mahoney, Terri McKay, Peter Leolkes, Sam Ricci, Sonia Harrison, Anne Carpenter, Kate Burdett, Catherine Chambers, Vanessa Cole, Lachlan Wildy and the four HR people from the City of Mitcham.

Congratulations• Rebecka Jury who has been selected to play for the State U19 Softball Team. The State Team is the

defending Australian Champion having won the U19 Grand Final in January 2015. • Ella Nixon-Dores, as reported in our last newsletter, was selected to represent South Australia at the

Pacific School Games - Diving held in Adelaide in November to compete in the 1m, 3m, Platform and Synchronised diving events.

All of her hard work has paid off and we are pleased to announce that Ella won 3 medals across the events: BRONZE on Platform; BRONZE on 3m and SILVER on 1m. She did well in a tough field with some divers who are much more experienced than her.

Well done ella !

The Eden Prize is funded from the bequest of John and Lydia Eden and is available for entry to public school students in Year 10. Students were invited to write a 600-800 word essay on the topic: “What can governments do to make the world a better and happier place?”

Students are always encouraged to enter such competitions, so they can develop and showcase their skills in a broader context.

Year BookHave you ordered a Year Book?

As we all know, schools are incredibly busy places, with an absolute plethora of activities, events and experiences to be enjoyed. Right at the beginning, there was Year 8 Camp, the Swimming Carnival and Sports Day, then there was another Camp, Debating, Interschool Sports Competitions, Excursions, Field Trips and activities designed to build confidence and self-awareness.

It really is almost impossible to list all the experiences available to the students at Mitcham Girls. There is, however, a wonderful publication that documents what has occurred and what the school year has had on offer. The Year Book is a collection of experiences, insights and history; something that will provide opportunities to re-visit memories in years to come. If you would like one, but still haven’t organised yourself, pay $20.00 to the Finance Office or give the school a call and speak to Sue King.
