Impact of offer shopping on:

Once company makes an offer to a candidate corresponding open requisition is blocked. Companies end up waiting for 30 days to 90 days’ notice period for the candidate and number of times the candidate just does not bother to even inform the company about not joining until last day. It puts company in a very tight spot, as companies have already made commitments based on the candidate’s commitment. Once company is in this situation, they are very desperate to hire anyone that can join immediately. It results into companies hiring not right candidate and even encouraging candidates in the notice periods to join them. It creates a vicious cycle.

Although a candidate might think that he is getting benefitted, but that might not be always true. Candidate by default gets in offer shopping mode, he makes the commitment to join a company without even looking at seriously at that company. He might or might not get other offers, and in the offer shopping mode he might not look at companies very seriously to make a right choice. This will not be a good thing for candidate either, as he will be spending next couple of years at that company.

Offer shopping creates a bias for the candidates already having an offer. A candidate once having an offer become more confident in future interviews and that increases his chances of getting another offer. But by accepting multiple offers, he puts other potentially right candidates in a disadvantage position.
