Do Not Be Afraid!Open Wide the Doors to Christ!
Dear People and Friends of San Juan Bautista,
Our longing for the Lord has guided usthrough Advent, so that we might be betterprepared for the Lord Jesus when he comes, nomatter what day or hour. Now we stand at thethreshold of Christmas. The words of the angelto the Blessed Virgin Mary encourage us aswell, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you havefound favor with God” Faithful disciples are sofocused on the Master that they do not let feardeter them.
As we enter the final hours beforeChristmas, entering becomes a key action. TheHispanic custom of Aguinaldos or Posadas usesnine days to recall the journey and effort of
Mary and Joseph to enter a proper place for the Child to beborn. What a beautiful custom that capitalizes onHispanic hospitality. For nine days, Hispanics gather at anew location each day to remember the difficulty Joseph andMary experienced in preparing for the entrance of theMessiah into the world. Through hymns, prayers, Scripturesand sometimes the celebration of the Mass, the Aguinaldos orPosadas serve as our final efforts to be open to receive theLord. As each successive family opens their home so thattheir praying guests may enter to receive a hospitablewelcome, we are reminded to open our hearts hospitably forChrist to enter in.
This entering of Christ into our hearts is another kind ofentering that is key at this time of year. Yet, busyness, sin orselfishness can be our way of saying to the Lord “No room inthe inn.” The Sacrament of Confession assists us in openingour hearts and allowing Christ to enter in. Receiving theEucharist properly prepared is clearly another powerful waythat we allow Christ to enter our hearts. However, if we areaware of serious sin, we need confession first to prepare ourhearts to receive him properly. Even if we have notcommitted any serious sin, confession still helps us root outsin and selfishness so that we might permit Christ to enter ourhearts more deeply than before.
As we gather for Christmas Mass tonight andtomorrow, may the doors of our hearts be wide open thatChrist may find a loving, welcoming place to abide. May wetruly be thankful that Jesus is Emmanuel—God with us. Letus not be afraid, for we have Good News of great Joy!
In the Joy of our Lord’s Coming,

Although society has been inundated withChristmas since November, the Church has used theweeks of Advent to prepare ourselves for this specialcelebration we call Christmas. And Christmas, thegreat celebration of God-with-us in Jesus Christ, isnot a one day fiesta. It is too important for just oneday, so the Church uses more than 2 weeks tocelebrate the Christmas Season. We begin with theOctave of Christmas—8 days as one. The beginningand ending of the Octave are holy days of obligationfor Catholics. The beginning is December 25th, theNativity of our Lord and the end of the Octave is theSolemnity of Mary, Mother of God, January 1st.Please plan to celebrate Christmas with your parishfamily.
