Friday, October 21, 2016 Sheridan, Noblesville, Cicero, Arcadia, Atlanta, Carmel, Fishers, Westfield Vol. 3, No. 209 Patchy fog before 9 a.m., then partly sunny today. Partly cloudy tonight. TODAY’S WEATHER HIGH: 55 LOW: 39 Fall leaves are to pumpkin spice as beards are to beers at this fan favorite event, Beards & Brews The Championship. This year marks the event’s third running and its poised to deliver another hash tag worthy experience. On Saturday, Oct. 29 from Noon to 4 PM, Noblesville’s Hipstoric Downtown will host the event in the parking lot at 8th Street & Maple Avenue (directly behind the Hamilton County Visitor’s Center). “Beards & Brews continues to be an event that creates excitement, drawing guests from Noblesville and Hamilton County but also many from across Central Indiana,” said Chris Owens, Executive Director of Noblesville Main Street. It’s an event that brings some of the greatest local breweries to our downtown. The live beard contest makes it the perfect duo for a fall favorite.” This year’s event will feature a live beard contest, with a panel of judges naming a champion in each of the following categories; Best of Show, Longest Beard, Thickest Beard, and Most Creatively Groomed Beard. Bearded contestants do not need to register in advance and there is no entry fee, they are just asked to arrive at the event prior to 1 p.m., when the contest portion of the event will kick off. Champions from the last two years will return and compete to hold their honor. In addition to the beard contest, 4 hours of live music will be performed by local favorites Steve Smith, and Austin Stirling and the Hangdog Hearts. “We’re so excited to have these amazing musicians joining us for this year’s event, “ added Owens. Both Steve and Austin have a strong presence locally and have toured regionally and nationally. The Rugged Company, owned by Corey Cole, will be on site with a product line ranging from handcrafted beard oils and man care products along with unisex fashion apparel and artisan items. Nickel Plate Artist, Julie Strawhaker will also be on site selling handmade apparel items, beard accessories and many more unique pieces. Nameless Catering, will complete the vendors as they sell and serve chili. As equally as important as the beautiful beards are the lineup of participating breweries featured at this year’s event. The rock star breweries on-site include; Barley Island with Deer Creek Brewery, Bier Brewery, Grand Junction Brewing Company, Fountain Square Brewing, and the brand new Four Day Ray. Each will all be on site selling their craft beers from Noon to 4 p.m. Admission tickets are $20 and $10 for designated drivers and include a tasting sample from participating breweries. All breweries will sell pints throughout the event. The admission ticket supports Noblesville Main Street, a 501-C3 dedicated to promote economic and cultural vitality of Downtown Noblesville. Noblesville Main Street produces 60+ events for the community each year. “Noblesville is known for having an abundance of great events,” said Chris Owens. “This one will be for those 21 years and older, which we feel adds to the diversity of our event offerings. Ultimately, the goal of this event is to bring new people to Noblesville, showing off the great places and experiences we have to offer.” For event updates and information, find Hipstoric Noblesville on Facebook or at noblesvillemainstreet.org . Noblesville brings back Beards & Brews Riverview Health Auxiliary will host its annual Holiday Bazaar from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 1, in the Riverview Health Atrium. This event is open to the public and will have crafts, baked goods and gift shop items for sale. Riverview Health Auxiliary to host annual Holiday Bazaar By STEVE COOKE Noblesville Deputy Mayor Every year in October, Fire Prevention Week reminds Hoosiers to ensure their homes are prepared in the event of a fire. If you’re like me, you check your smoke alarms and talk with your kids about an escape plan should a fire break out. But, this year I had a new perspective for fire safety. Thanks to the Hamilton County Professional Firefighters Association, on September 24 I was one of 17 public officials to participate in Fire Ops 101. I had the opportunity to learn what it would be like to run into a fire as well as to escape it. The program is designed to educate decision makers about the skills, equipment and emergency scenarios that are part of every firefighter’s duty. As Noblesville’s Deputy Mayor, my “day in the life” experience was an informative reality check that will alter how I look at the next Fire Department budget. Equipment purchases are more than just line items on a spreadsheet. Squatting in a live- fire exercise during a flashover with flames overhead heating the room to 500-600 degrees makes you very thankful for all that gear – and the guy next to you holding the fire hose. Such decisions about equipment and personnel can be life-or-death matters for a firefighter – and perhaps someone they are trying to save. In Noblesville, one-third of our city’s proposed operational budget for 2017 is devoted to the Fire Department. And for good reason. Last year, it took 127 sworn firefighters working out of seven fire stations to cover 5,292 runs with an average response time of 5 minutes, 16 seconds to arrive on the scene. And they did so successfully due to the more than 20,000 annual training hours they accumulate. You are never more thankful to have a highly trained fire department than when you are one of those 5,292 runs. In addition to the flashover experience, I also participated in a simulated vehicle accident that called for extricating a crash victim. We learned how to use the necessary tools such as those generally known as “jaws of life,” but also relied on a high level of coordination with multiple firefighters working around you. The most anxious I personally felt during Fire Ops 101 was the search and rescue exercise. I did not enjoy crawling on my hands and knees through a smoke-filled, two-story dwelling in complete darkness to find our victim – and pull all 185 pounds of him to safety while lugging my own 70 pounds of gear. But those are the kinds of disorienting environments firefighters must contend with. I ended my day with an even more physically demanding scenario: a simulated EMS run. Performing CPR chest compressions for 10 minutes while riding in the back of a moving ambulance made me appreciate the rigors of emergency medical treatment. With 75 percent of runs by the Noblesville Fire Department classified as EMS, it’s clear that firefighters today do much more than fight fires – requiring paramedic training to handle any kind of trauma. Throughout my entire Fire Ops 101 experience, I appreciated having real-world training facilities within our community. Walsh Construction Company plans to temporarily close up to three lanes of northbound Interstate 69 for overnight work at the 106th Street interchange bridges being built in Fishers. Starting Sunday, Oct. 23, up to three left lanes of northbound I-69 will be closed near mile 204 between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m. each weeknight through Thursday night/Friday morning. Work is dependent on favorable weather, and construction schedules are subject to change. Additional lane closures are scheduled in the following weeks, and specific closure schedules will be announced as work progresses. Crews will be removing temporary overhang platforms used during the construction of the bridge decks, pouring concrete walls on the bridges, and painting bridge beams. Motorists are reminded that the speed limit near the construction zone is reduced to 55 mph and may be reduced to 45 mph during overnight working hours. Motorists are advised to pay attention to work zone warning signs, follow posted speed limits, avoid distractions, and drive sensibly near construction zones. By RICHIE HALLReporter Sports EditorNoblesville volleyball coach Steve

Hawthorne admitted Thursday night thathis Millers have struggled a little bit withtheir confidence this season

So the team took the opportunity tofocus on itself over the past couple weeksThat approach worked as Noblesvillecame out fired up for its first round Class4A Sectional 8 match with host Fishers

The Millers won over the Tigers in foursets 25-17 25-13 23-25 25-21 and thusmoved on to Saturday mornings semi-final Noblesville will take on Westfieldwhich cruised past Anderson 25-11 25-825-4 in the second match of the evening

The Millers-Shamrocks match will beplayed at 11 am Saturday and be followedby a clash between No 3 ranked HamiltonSoutheastern and No 7 Carmel Thechampionship match is scheduled for 7pm Saturday

The first between the Millers andFishers was tight until midway throughwhen Noblesville ran off four straightpoints to jump ahead 18-13 FreshmanLexie Almodovar helped out with a kill

Everything was going right for theMillers on offense Senior Allie Phillipsthe teams setter scored a point on her ownwith a successful net tip late in the first setPhillips and Lexie Bowler later teamed upfor a block

Noblesville ran through the second setwith Alexa Roberts making a bigcontribution Roberts hit eight kills in theset alone including three during a big runfor the Millers They scored the last fivepoints of the set Stephanie Meysembourgserved a couple of aces in the set and juniorEmily Kiser helped out with a kill and a nettip

Right off the bat I want to say bothof our left sides really contributed welltonight said Hawthorne Both of themspecifically have been working on somethings to create a little bit more range intheir offense and I think Roberts absolutelydid an outstanding job of that tonight Shemanaged the situation when she needed toShe took care of scoring when she neededto

Noblesville looked ready to sail throughthe third set when it jumped ahead 13-8then led 17-13 But the Tigers pounced atthat point scoring six straight points to takea 19-17 lead Mallory Hernandez hit twokills during the run and another one of herkills put her team ahead 20-18

Fishers later led 21-19 but the teamswould alternate points for the remainder ofthe set and that allowed the Tigers to grabthe third set 25-23

Fishers led 7-4 in the fourth set aidedby an ace from Julia Drozd This time theMillers went on a run scoring sevenconsecutive points to lead 11-7 Kiser hadtwo more winners - a tip and a kill - andMeysembourg served another ace

The Tigers cut Noblesvilles lead to11-10 and were still within 14-12 midwaythrough the set But the Millers madeanother run this one of five straight pointsto jump ahead 19-12 Ashley Birkhimerand Almodovar each hit kills

Fishers made one more push cutting a22-19 Noblesville lead to 22-21 TheMillers would finish the match by winning

its last three points ending it on a kill fromBowler

Everybody contributed something tothe win Roberts hit 15 kills withAlmodovar putting down 14 Birkhimerand Bowler each had eight kills withBowler also making two blocks

Phillips dished out 52 assists and alsomade three blocks Kiser had two blocks aswell Meysembourg wound up with fiveaces Brenna Everingham led the digs with22 and Maddie Hine had 13

Fishers finished its season at 24-9Hernandez smacked down 19 kills withAudrey Haworth hitting eight andElizabeth Weeks spiking six Rose Duffyhanded out 44 assists

Ellie Adams made 23 digs and JuliaDrozd had 10 digs Drozd and MaggieMarkwood both hit one ace Taylor Soperhad 25 blocks with Hernandez getting twoblocks

It does hurt to kind of have everythingcome down to one game as far as how faryou go when your season ends said Tigerscoach Steven Peek But as far as theprogress of this program weve made a lotof strides this year for sure finishing in thetop half of conference for the first time ina long time and really not just doing it oncebut kind of doing it over and over againagainst tough teams
