Nomads News Official Newsletter of Nomads Golf Club Perth Western Australia
Another great day in Australia is when you get out onto a good golf
course surrounded by good mates, sharing a laugh and a cold drink after
the game. We are indeed privileged to live in the “lucky country” where
great golf courses abound and yes, plenty of water, unlike the Western
Cape (South Africa), experiencing their worst drought in 100 years.!! Four
of us, Vaughan, B, Ken and yours truly will soon be winging our way to
South Africa to represent Australia and to participate in the Nomads South
African Nationals being played at the Royal Cape golf course from the 2nd
to the 9th of March. The “Fr-Editor (and Mrs “Fr-Editor) will be using this
opportunity to also make it a well-deserved vacation, visiting family and
friends so your March edition of Nomads News will, most probably be
written from a land far, far away. One can never be far away from one’s,
newly grown roots, so I have decided to take my laptop (the electronic
one) with me so I can keep myself up to speed as to what’s happening in
Perth.
On the home front, the year ahead promises to be a good one with many
of you having already renewed you membership and eagerly awaiting
the start of the Peter Thomson Knockout Cup, the North vs South
Challenge Cup, the 2018 Seed Equity Group Charity Day as well as our 5th
Birthday Celebrations, plus much, much more.
“Fr”Editorial” by Fred Meijer

STOP THE PRESS……………………………………..
The “Fr”-Editor has it on good authority that our own Past Captain, Ken Lloyd, has been
appointed by the National Executive as National PRO for Nomads Golf Australia. I am sure
that Ken will do a fantastic job in promoting the Nomads brand across Australia. From all of
us in Perth we wish Ken a successful future in this high ranking portfolio. Congratulations
Ken!!
As most of you know, Ken was also approached by our local committee to take up the position at Sponsorship
Officer. We conducted a short interview with Ken and he has already made a significant change to our Raffles
at our monthly game and this is what he had to say…..
“We are, with immediate effect, changing our usual raffle structure from individual raffles to a Cash Draw. This
will create more opportunities for our members to walk away with a sum of cash. This has proven to be very
successful in the Eastern States as more and more folks would rather have some extra cash in their pockets,
rather than a raffle prize which, inadvertently, has to be purchased by the Club. The way it’s going to work is as
follows: The Club (Nomads Perth) is putting in $100 each month, Howard Junkin has offered to donate a sum of
$50 per month. The monies collected so far from the “Big 3”will be added to the monthly pool at $50 per month
for the next nine months. In addition, players are invited (and encouraged) to participate as the monies raised
will be set aside towards the running costs of the Club.
To ensure a smooth registration programme we request that you pay your monthly game fee of $55 PLUS $10 for
the Cash Draw to Neville at the registration point. PLEASE ENSURE YOU HAVE THE CORRECT AMOUNT
OF $65 as Neville does not have a float. If you choose not to participate in the Cash Draw, Neville will remove
your name from the list.
After the completion of the game you will have a second opportunity to purchase additional tickets at $5 per
ticket which may strengthen your chances of winning. These tickets may be purchased from Ken (or whoever
has been tasked to do it on the day)
A total amount of $160 will be drawn and broken up into 1x$80, 1x50 and 1x$30 prizes. In the event of more
than 50 tickets being sold on the day, the values of the individual prizes will increase.
Please Note: 1. You must be at Prizegiving to win the cash!!
2. You have 3 chances to win! (Example, say you win 1st prize, your number will be returned into
the draw for the 2nd and 3rd prizes)
3. The draw is done via the computer which allocates a number to each participant when the
field is published and then “grabs” a random number for each draw.
The Novelty Prize draw (The supplementary Raffle for the chocolate, wine, beer, etc.) still remains in place.
Simply purchase 3 tickets for $5 from the red tin which will be circulated prior to prizegiving”
Until Next Month……………Happy Golfing
Captain’s Corner
Let me firstly congratulate Ken Lloyd on his appointment by the
National Executive as the National PRO for Nomads Golf Australia. I
am sure that Ken is the right person for the job and I wish him all the
best in his new appointment.
Another great day was had by all at Sun City and I would like to
congratulate Ricky Stauch and Ashley Dugmore on their magnificent
achievements by scoring sought after 42 and 40 pointers respectively.
Well done guys. It just goes to show that Sun City always brings out the
best in most of us. 39 players scored a total of 1268 points, averaging
33 pts per player. Not too bad if you think of those who walked the
course.....uphill, downhill, tiring to say the least. It was great to see
Greg Nairn out on the course after his knee replacement surgery
managing 33 points off his 14 handicap. Keep up the good work Greg,
enjoy your extended holidays and we will see you out there again
soon.
Thanks also to Vaughan Nothnagel for a great fines session. I don’t
think anyone got away without having to dig around for a gold coin or
two.
Vice-Captain, Dave Bartlett has advised that, due to circumstances
beyond his control, he has postponed the 2018 Seed Equity Group
Charity Day to 11 November 2018. JVC, Fred is putting together the
Peter Thomson Knockout Cup event and together with Ken is finalising
arrangements for the first of the North vs South Challence Trophy
events. Please support these chaps with their efforts and if you haven’t
spoken to either of them, do so at your earliest convenience.
In closing I would like to wish, Ken Lloyd, Vaughan Nothnagel, B
Anderson and Fred Meijer safe travels, as the depart our shores to
participate, as part of the Australian squad, in the South African
Nationals to be played at Royal Cape Golf Club in Cape Town, South
Africa. Good golfing to you all and bring back as many trophies as
you can possibly carry.
That’s All Folks, see you at Kwinana on 11th

TREASURER’S
TROVE By Alastair Beattie
Many of you have, thus far, paid your 2018 Membership Fees, for which I would like to thank you ever so much. Please remember, you have until the end of March to make payment. If you haven’t had the opportunity to do so, please attend to this as soon as possible as it makes my life so much easier to reconcile our membership list for the ensuing playing year. For ease of reference, I have again included the article published in the last issue of Nomads News The cost of membership has increased this year from $200 to $210 but I can sincerely say that this still represents good value for money. Your membership subs are used in a number of ways such as: * 30% ($65) of the fees levied are paid out on behalf of individual
members as capitation fees to Nomads Australia and to Golf Australia as part of the Golf Link handicapping service. (We pay these fees based on membership, not based on membership fees collected.)
* There are also a number of fixed costs associated with running the club which are unavoidable. Some examples are - Samson license fees (membership database used to maintain member records which all Nomads clubs utilise), accounting software, insurances, etc.
* Additionally the committee also periodically subsidises the costs of some monthly games or provides catering/drinks e.g. at the AGM.
* All new members are also provided with playing shirt, cap, tie and socks as part of the Induction process.
* Nomads Perth also contributes $2000 towards the cost of hosting the Charity Day, in keeping with the ethos of Nomads.
In addition;
None of the committee are formally paid for services, all time and effort is volunteered and in many instances is significant. There are however some expense reimbursements which occur and which are reasonable.
Additional funds are paid towards match day prizes (where these are not covered by Sponsorship or match day profit) and towards certain assets (banners, laptops, altar) and costs of assets (e.g. engraving, trophies, 40 pointer recognition, etc.
I am sure you would all agree that the tangible value received from membership subs is significant in addition to the intangible value that being a Nomad Member offers.
We are a golf club and do not operate for commercial gain. If anyone is not going to be able to pay their membership I would urge you to contact me so that we can make arrangements if required.
Payments can be made via Credit Card, PayPal (carries a service charge), EFT or, if you prefer, cash.
Bits ‘n
Pieces
In my role as Sponsorship Officer, I would like to take this opportunity to thank each and every sponsor for their contribution to the success of Nomads Golf Club-Perth. Your contributions ensure that our Club remains sustainable and at the forefront of being able to support what Nomads is all about namely, the furtherance of golf, junior golf development and being able to give back to those more in need than ourselves. This month we extend a warm welcome to Auto Masters (Karl Meyers), KWV (Dave Twycross & Ken Lloyd), the latest addition to our long list of sponsors. To our members, there is nothing more pleasing than to see you support our sponsors in whichever way possible – as the saying goes, the more you put in, the more you get out. GOLF QUIPS
golf.ing, a duffer’s dictionary by Henry Beard & Roy McKie,
continued……..
scorecard – A pre-printed listing of the holes on the course on which a
player records his opening offer prior to the commencement of
serious negotiations.
scramble – Tournament format in which all the members of a
foursome drive and then hit successive shots from the ball position of
the player with the best lie or the loudest mouth.
scrambling golf – Style of play in which a golfer ends up with a
respectable score in spite of, rather than because of the shots he hit.
scratch player - A player with a handicap of zero; a par golfer; a rat;
a louse; a stinker.
senior – A golfer who attributes his poor play to the fact that he lacks
the physique of a younger player.
sh-nk – One of the two five-letter words that is a far more serious
breach of etiquette to utter on a golf course than any other 4-letter
word. The other is ch-ke.
short game – The sort shots played around the green (chips, putts,
pitches and sand trap blasts) and the cheap shots taken between the
green and the next tee (quips, digs, cracks, slams and jests).
shotmaking – The ability to make dumb luck look like smart play.
skied drive – Tee shot with a very high trajectory that often fails to
clear a hazard or a waste area. Also known as a ballooned drive, a
rainmaker, a moon shot, a trial balloon, a cancelled shot, a jettisoned
stroke, or a rescheduled launch.
spin – Professional golfers and other accomplished players can apply
a variety of spins to the ball to make it curve around obstacles, bore
into the wind, stop dead where it lands, or even reverse direction.
These shots take skill and practice, but most beginners have a bag of
tricks, too. For example, even the rankest of amateurs can amaze
their playing companions by making a ball run right across the centre
of a hole without going in, rise straight up into the air, execute
unbelievably sharp left or right turns, travel sideways or even
backwards, or disappear entirely.
stableford – Scoring system in which players are awarded a
progressively greater number of points for pars, birdies and eagles. A
similar system called “GeraldFord,” widely used in charity
tournaments, awards players points for the number of spectators they
hit.
10th Australian Nomads Nationals
NOOSA SPRINGS, 12>14 October 2018
The 10th Australian Nomads Nationals will be played at Noosa Springs, 2hrs North of Brisbane on the Sunshine Coast over the weekend 12 to 14 October 2018. Nomads Perth had great representation at the 2017 Nationals at Kooindah Waters and we would like to attempt an even better response for the 2018 event. At the time of going to print with this edition of Nomads News, we have already had requests from members to add them to the list of interested parties. (see below) . If your name does not appear on the list and you are seriously contemplating attending the 10th Australian Nationals in October 2018, contact Fred Meijer at 0432 083 040 – [email protected] or Ken Lloyd at 0437 602 004 – [email protected] - PS. Ken Lloyd and Fred Meijer, having done such sterling work for the 2017 Nationals, have been “appointed” as “tournament co-ordinators” for Perth. – Between these two ALL arrangements will be communicated to interested parties. We have it on good authority that they may even be in a position to arrange a bulk booking for transport to and from Brisbane, saving you money, putting you first.
At this early stage we have been advised that, thus far, 19 spots have been allocated to Perth and we may
have to implement a fair “selection” process. Once more details become available we will keep you
informed but if you wish to add your name to the list, please feel free to do so by contacting Fred at
[email protected] – Currently, those who participated in the 2017 Australian Nationals have been
