Fellow Nomads,
January just seemed to fly in and bluster out and before you had a chance to say “white rabbit”. February's already upon us and almost complete in the process being a busy month with Boland's 20th Anniversary nicely inter-spaced between January's Game at Humewood and February's OMIPSA game at “The Hill”.
Six of us represented Eastern Cape at Boland's Anniversary celebration. The trip down with VC Stuart at the wheel and youngsters Pat Phillips and Roy Skinner bickering in the back seat was something else altogether. Langkloof and a customary stop at Robbie's Sex Shoppe in the Klein Karoo with the barometer at 40oC was a welcome relieve. We made it in time for the welcome cocktail party and friendships were renewed over a few cold “frosties” and pizzas from the Stellbosch GC oven!!
The Anniversary dinner was held under the stars at Hansie van Niekerk's Knorhoek Wine Estate and proved to be an amazing success even if the wind did bluster a little. The next day's game at Stellenbosch proved a challenge for just about everyone and there were no Eastern Cape mention in the prize-list. I had the honour of playing against Alten Hulme, Boland Captain, and if I remember correctly, wound up paying a little for the priviledge. Great hospitality and a great time had by all.
February's monthly game at Port Elizabeth Golf Club included our annual OMIPSA challenge and I must apologize for the poor communication of the format for the day. A decision was taken to simplify the scoring by simply adding the 2 scores together. This was not well communicated for which I must shoulder the blame. There was some concern that playing off Nomads handicaps would adversely affect our qualifiers in the Regional and National events. Nomads handicaps will have no bearing in future events as both the Regional and National events use an average of the qualifier's past 2-year handicaps with a maximum 20% variation allowed for recent changes.
My thanks to all that entered the OMIPSA competition on the day. Our 39 pairs earned us two entries and best of luck to Cobus, Peter,
Ken’s Korner - February 2013
Byron and Kerry as they move to the Regional play-offs. Thanks also to prospective Nomad Sheldon Holdsworth for so ably representing Old Mutual at our prize-giving; bodes well for the future!!
The Port Elizabeth Golf Club was in great shape on the day and my appreciation and congratulations to Barry, David and all the course and catering staff at “The Hill” for making our visit to your club a memorable one.
I had the pleasure of playing with John Skinner on his first game back after an extended lay-off and we were paired against the formidable pairing of Mike Lourens and Ian Macauley. On another day it would have been a pleasure watching first Mike and then Ian blast their drives 300-metres plus down the middle, fairway after fairway after fairway. Mike took the overall honours in the B Division on the day and John and I wound up paying our dues; thanks for coming!!
It was an absolute pleasure to induct another two Nomads into the fold. A hearty welcome to Robert Falkner and Simon Wilcox; may your association with Nomads be a long and rewarding experience.
One nice thing about being Captain is that you at least get to handle the trophies even though it's only to present to someone else on the day!! Maybe next time!! Our next game is just around the corner at Uitenhage on the 10th March. Remember that registration opens 1-hour before the 1st tee-off time at 11h00. I look forward to seeing you all there.
Until next time.

Fellow Nomads.
February found us competing at the Port Elizabeth Golf Club
for the monthly game as well as the Old Mutual
International Pairs of South Africa competition. Many
thanks to PE Golf Club staff for the friendly welcome to the course and
clubhouse. The damage from the recent flash flood was still evident, pity
the rain has to do damage as well as good when falling to earth. The
weather was quite acceptable to start proceedings but became a bit nasty
as the game progressed. My partner, Dennis Jones, really struggled and was
a hot favourite to take home his own donated prize for the day, the dreaded
Teddy. Fortunately for him, someone else in the field managed to play
worse than he did and saved him the embarrassment. Needless to say, we
lost our private game against the ever steady Andre Heunis and Nico Smit,
but still had an enjoyable day in their company.
Well done to the winners on the day, with Stuart McLeod again coming first
in the A division, ensuring again his qualification for Gold Cup in December.
Well done to the two winning pairs who will represent Eastern Cape Nomads
at the regional final in the OMIPSA competition and we wish you everything
of the best in progressing to the final later in the year – it is a wonderful
experience playing at Zebula with the carrot at the end of the stick being
an overseas trip to represent our country at the world finals.
I enjoyed witnessing the induction of two new Nomads on Sunday, Robert
Falkner and Simon Wilcock, may your stay at Eastern Cape Nomads be a long
and happy one. It was nice to see that Simon's mother, Pat Wilcock, was
present to witness her son being inducted. Simon's father, the late John
Wilcock, was a proud Nomad himself, having started his Nomadic career in
the Border and then moving to Port Elizabeth for a long while before his
passing away a few years ago.
We look forward to seeing you all at Uitenhage Golf Club on 10th March for
our next monthly game. Shortly after this, the team to represent Eastern
Cape Nomads at the National Tournament at Ebotse in Benoni depart with
only one thought in mind, to bring back the Bert Hunt trophy!
Good Golfing

“Tales” from Long Faced JVC
Game number 2 of the year.
We played at Port Elizabeth Golf club, in blustery conditions. Well done to the club for once again giving us a well prepared course. My personal thanks to Barry Harmer for assisting me with the Whisky for the thirsty golfers that needed fuel before the 1st tee.
Now for the Tale
Got to the club Ultra early so that I could get the Alter set up. I was so busy, I didn't even have time for my usual Hansa draft. My partner for the day was my Gary player partner and National Junior Vice Captain, Greg Clack. We were ready to shoot the lights out and take one of the coveted Old Mutual Pairs spots. Epic fail. Our opposition was the ever smiling Steve Pritchard who looked a little like a minstrel with his white sun block all over his lips, and Rob Griffiths. Gentlemen thank you for the game and your cash. Really enjoyed your company.
The last 4 ball came in at 17h30, and so I was looking at a 18h15 prize giving. I tried to hustle the guys into the shower, but I was met with laughter and jokes about my long face. It was also suggested that perhaps I should shower first before I run around telling others to shower. Point taken. Got prize giving off at 18h30.
Thanks to the 4 Altar bunnies (including Howard Lipman) for your help afterwards in dismantling the alter. It is much appreciated
A little competition for you. In each of my articles there will be a highlighted letter. Over the months, note the letters. Then unjumble the letters and make a word. Email me the word. Winner by lucky draw will get a lovely bottle of bells.
Nationals is round the corner, and entries are completed. The Frontier Trophy and Rough Rider are on the 6th and 7th April, which is only 5 weeks away. There will be 20 places available. Entry forms will be out shortly. If you are interested, mark it in your diaries now.
