G reetings fellow residents! Thank you so much for your vote of confidence in electing me to be your new 2015 Kennedy

Heights Community Council President. I want to first thank exiting president, Michelle Dillingham for all her work and dedication to our community. I’ve been privileged to work this past year with a terrific group of council members and am looking forward to working with several new and returning faces. I know 2015 will be a great year for Ken-nedy Heights and I am excited to be work-ing with our community. Many of you may recognize me and my dog Gill as I jog through our neighborhood on a regular basis. I look forward to meeting as many neigh-bors as possible and listening to your ide-as on how I can work to continue making

Kennedy Heights a great neighborhood to live in. Please join us at our next community council meeting on Tuesday, January 20 at Kennedy Heights Presbyterian Church. Stop by early for our community dinner at 6:30 PM and then stay for the KHCC meeting at 7:30 PM. –Dan Kasprowicz KHCC President [email protected]

PRESIDENT’S CORNER

MESSAGE FROM KHCC PAST PRESIDENT

A s we welcome in the New Year, we also welcome the 2015 Board of Trustees for our com-munity council, including our

new President Dan Kasprowicz. Dan has already shown an incredible commitment to our neighborhood, and I am confident he will serve in this role well. In 2005 our family moved into the child-hood home of my husband Chris on Odin Avenue. I was recruited by then-President Ernie Barbeau to join the board

and I never left! Over the past 10 years I’ve met so many great people, and learned so much about community. As I pass the torch, I leave you with my signa-ture offer: “There are so many ways to get involved in your neighborhood! Come to community council and find out how!” –Michelle Dillingham KHCC Immediate Past President [email protected]

BECOME A FRIEND OF KENNEDY HEIGHTS IN 2015!

Your Community Council Board held a budget planning session in early January 2014. We made a wish-list of neighborhood activi-ties—from the arts to festivals like Juneteenth, pool days, movie nights, block parties, the newsletter and the Progressive Dinner—and then had the difficult task of selecting only what we could afford. For this reason we decided to launch a fundraising initiative called “The Friends of Kennedy Heights” so we could better fund and expand on all these great community-building activities. The response to this initiative was tremendous and played a large part in the execution of 2014 events and programming. Without our “Friends”, the Community Council Board would not have achieved the successes that we did. We ask that YOU join the Kennedy Heights Friend list in 2015. Any amount is welcome and all donations are tax-deductible. Instruc-tions on how to become a “Friend” are below. Please also join us in thanking the following “Friends” who have made a financial contri-bution to Kennedy Heights. *We appreciate you!*

K ennedy Heights resident artist Casey Riordan Millard creates beautiful and haunting works including sculpture, paintings,

drawings and most recently, a children’s book. Many of her pieces feature Shark Girl, a girl’s body and a shark’s head who suffers the predicament of never facing “her inner turmoil and instead, continues the outward quest for diversion.” Several area institutions have featured her works including the Contemporary Arts Center, Thomas More College, and the Cincinnati Art Museum. She has also donated many of her pieces to non-profits around Cincin-nati. For more information about her work, visit http://caseyriordanmillard.com/home.html. Growing up in Pleasant Ridge, Casey spent many great hours around Kennedy Heights. “When I went to high school, I had friends [in] Kennedy Heights and thought—this is the coolest neighborhood in the whole world. It was just this secret pocket of wonderfulness!” After college she lived in Chicago where she also met her husband. When they decided to move to Cincinnati, they looked at homes all around the city. One day, they were shown

a home in Kennedy Heights. “When we turned into home to check it out, I thought, ‘This is the secret place! It really exists!’” She looked at her husband and said, “We have to live here.” They bought their home on Valley View and she says they are not going anywhere. In fact, she even con-vinced her mother to move to the neigh-borhood. Millard is very active in the neighborhood. She has served on the Board of the Ken-nedy Heights Development Corporation as the Treasurer. She has also helped write grants for the Kennedy Heights Cultural Center and is thrilled to have just been asked to paint the mural for the new Cen-ter. “That was my great news of the week.” When asked what she loves about Kenne-dy Heights, Millard replied, “I love that it is such a residential community—it helps hold the magic. Kennedy Heights is stable. Steady. There’s low traffic—you actually know the drivers of the cars that go by. It’s truly unlike anywhere else.” We agree, Casey. We agree. –Stefanie Adams

KENNEDY HEIGHTS SENIOR HOUSING

TEAM UPDATE

@ PLEASANT RIDGE LIBRARY

O ur team’s guiding princi-

ple is to allow our senior

residents and renters to

AGE IN PLACE and

because of this, we are glad to

share this report. First, we met with

CMHA regarding the development

of a senior housing project in Ken-

nedy Heights on November 12. At

that meeting, both groups affirmed

that CMHA’s next step will be to

find the best sites in the neighbor-

hood for a project. This study will

start at the beginning of 2015.

Second, the Kennedy Heights

Development Corporation Housing

Committee has applied for two

volunteer planning interns from

University of Cincinnati via the

Community Development Corpora-

tions Association of Greater Cincin-

nati. If KHDC receives these in-

terns, they will work through spring

2015 and assist in the develop-

ment of the first phase of an Aging-

In-Place Initiative in Kennedy

Heights. They will also work with

our Kennedy Heights Senior Hous-

ing team—a team sponsored by

the KH Community Council and the

KH Development Corporation—on

the following goals: developing a

list of senior residents (both home-

owners and renters) to interview

about aging-in-place housing, cre-

ating the interview format and

questions, participating in the inter-

views, preparing a needs assess-

ment report based on the interview

results, and compiling a list of ser-

vice providers that could be ac-

cessed by our neighborhood’s sen-

ior residents.

Let the Kennedy Heights Senior

Housing team know your questions

and comments by contacting

Recently, the Series featured Frank W. Payne, a local jazz musician for many years and music director of Kennedy Heights Baptist Church, and Mimi Gingold, a former KHCC Beautification Committee chairperson whose work resulted in significant improve-

ments in the neighborhood. You can check out their stories and pictures on the KHCC website, www.kennedyheights.org. The Elder Series is a regular part of the KHCC meetings and transcripts of all inter-views are available on the KHCC website. Come hear the next series installment—along with other community information— at the next KHCC meetings on Tuesday, January 20 and Tuesday, February 17 at Kennedy Heights Presbyterian Church from 7:30–8:30 PM.

K ennedy Heights resident artist Casey Riordan Millard creates beautiful and haunting works including sculpture, paintings,

drawings and most recently, a children’s book. Many of her pieces feature Shark Girl, a girl’s body and a shark’s head who suffers the predicament of never facing “her inner turmoil and instead, continues the outward quest for diversion.” Several area institutions have featured her works including the Contemporary Arts Center, Thomas More College, and the Cincinnati Art Museum. She has also donated many of her pieces to non-profits around Cincin-nati. For more information about her work, visit http://caseyriordanmillard.com/home.html. Growing up in Pleasant Ridge, Casey spent many great hours around Kennedy Heights. “When I went to high school, I had friends [in] Kennedy Heights and thought—this is the coolest neighborhood in the whole world. It was just this secret pocket of wonderfulness!” After college she lived in Chicago where she also met her husband. When they decided to move to Cincinnati, they looked at homes all around the city. One day, they were shown

a home in Kennedy Heights. “When we turned into home to check it out, I thought, ‘This is the secret place! It really exists!’” She looked at her husband and said, “We have to live here.” They bought their home on Valley View and she says they are not going anywhere. In fact, she even con-vinced her mother to move to the neigh-borhood. Millard is very active in the neighborhood. She has served on the Board of the Ken-nedy Heights Development Corporation as the Treasurer. She has also helped write grants for the Kennedy Heights Cultural Center and is thrilled to have just been asked to paint the mural for the new Cen-ter. “That was my great news of the week.” When asked what she loves about Kenne-dy Heights, Millard replied, “I love that it is such a residential community—it helps hold the magic. Kennedy Heights is stable. Steady. There’s low traffic—you actually know the drivers of the cars that go by. It’s truly unlike anywhere else.” We agree, Casey. We agree. –Stefanie Adams

KENNEDY HEIGHTS SENIOR HOUSING

TEAM UPDATE

@ PLEASANT RIDGE LIBRARY

O ur team’s guiding princi-

ple is to allow our senior

residents and renters to

AGE IN PLACE and

because of this, we are glad to

share this report. First, we met with

CMHA regarding the development

of a senior housing project in Ken-

nedy Heights on November 12. At

that meeting, both groups affirmed

that CMHA’s next step will be to

find the best sites in the neighbor-

hood for a project. This study will

start at the beginning of 2015.

Second, the Kennedy Heights

Development Corporation Housing

Committee has applied for two

volunteer planning interns from

University of Cincinnati via the

Community Development Corpora-

tions Association of Greater Cincin-

nati. If KHDC receives these in-

terns, they will work through spring

2015 and assist in the develop-

ment of the first phase of an Aging-

In-Place Initiative in Kennedy

Heights. They will also work with

our Kennedy Heights Senior Hous-

ing team—a team sponsored by

the KH Community Council and the

KH Development Corporation—on

the following goals: developing a

list of senior residents (both home-

owners and renters) to interview

about aging-in-place housing, cre-

ating the interview format and

questions, participating in the inter-

views, preparing a needs assess-

ment report based on the interview

results, and compiling a list of ser-

vice providers that could be ac-

cessed by our neighborhood’s sen-

ior residents.

A fter five years of planning and anticipation, the Kennedy Heights community celebrated the ground breaking of the Kennedy Heights Cultural Campus in the former Kroger store at Kennedy and Montgomery Road on November 14. This was an exciting day for our neighborhood. The turnout was fantastic with

many residents and honorary guests in attendance including Mayor John Cranley, Ohio Representative Alicia Reece and members of the Lindner family. There was a perfor-mance by students from Kennedy Heights Montessori Center and several speakers addressed the crowd including KH Arts Center Vice President Richard Cooke and KH Development Corporation President Teresa Mulligan.

The new Kennedy Heights Cultural Campus will include KHAC’s Carl, Robert, Richard and Dorothy Lindner Annex, a new home for Kennedy Heights Montessori Center and space for another partner. It is scheduled to be completed in Summer 2015.
