The Bradford Pear Tree Mystery

A photo caption in the Spring 2015 Newsletterclaimed that "WPBF is also responsible formany of the Bradford Pear trees that grace ourcity with delicate white blossoms each spring."While it remains true that WPBF was responsi-ble for the planting of a number of these lovelytrees throughout the city, it is also a fact that theWhite Plains Urban Renewal Agency arrangedand oversaw the selection, delivery and plantingof over 200 Bradford Pear trees within theCentral Business District using Urban Renewalfederal and state grant funds.

WPBF ‘Cultivates’ Garden Art!With the help of Mayor Tom Roach andDPW Comm. Rick Hope, "The Cultivator,"a sculpture by WPBF Director Peter Wilcox,has been installed on the site of a formerWPBF garden on Westchester Avenue as itenters White Plains. This is the secondsculpture in Peter's "Giants of The Earth"series depicting the tools needed to createWPBF's 60-plus gardens. "The Trowel" (farright) was installed in a WPBF garden atRoute 119 and Hamilton Avenue in 2006.

WPBF is now looking for a sponsor to adoptthe Westchester Avenue site in order to allowus the means to take over the planting andmaintenance of a spectacular gardensurrounding "The Cultivator." A majorgateway to our city, this is a great opportunityfor a generous sponsor to showcase his orher name on a WPBF garden sign in viewof thousands of motorists entering the cityeach day. 50 years and still going strong! Happy Birthday to White PlainsBeautification Foundation.

This has been an exciting year for WPBF. The planning for ouranniversary began last fall with Daffodil Project Chair JoannaD'Addario and Garden & Landscape Co-chair Mary Ann DeRosa coor-dinating the planting of over 10,000 daffodil bulbs which bloomed thisspring in spectacular celebration throughout the city. And, once againwith the help of White Plains DPW, they have just finished plantinganother 12,000 bulbs. I can't wait until next spring!

Our nurseries , Amodio's Garden Center, Gedney Farms Nursery andRidgeway Garden Center, planted various shades of yellow in all our63 gardens to honor our 50th anniversary. When spring finally arrived,the city was "glowing yellow".

The celebration continued with WPBF presenting to the City of WhitePlains, a beautiful and graceful Verdin Clock at the intersection ofBloomingdale Road and Mamaroneck Avenue. A dedication of theclock to all the founders and members of WPBF took place onSeptember 24th, 2015.

Lastly, our 50th Gala honoring our founder and first president BrianWallach and his wife Beth, also a former president and creator ofWPBF's show "This Blooming City,” Adopt-a-Park Chair and formerpresident Barbara Vrooman, and former vice president and architectBob Pollack, posthumously, was held at the CV Rich Mansion, homeof The Woman's Club of White Plains and enjoyed by over 200 people.What an amazing evening it was!

White Plains Beautification Foundation is an all-volunteer organizationwhose sole purpose is to keep White Plains blooming. The Gift of Time -"A beautiful addition tothe city." That's whatthey're saying about the16-foot tall Verdin posttwo-faced clock installed inthe triangle garden plant-ed and maintained byAmodio's Garden Centerat the intersection ofMamaroneck Avenue andBloomingdale Road. Agift to commemorateWPBF's GoldenAnniversary, the clockwas installed July 21 anddedicated Sept. 24 "Inhonor of all the foundersand volunteers who madethe 50th anniversary ofWhite Plains BeautificationFoundation, Inc.possible." After the dedication a reception was held at GilliePark complete with birthday cake celebrating theFoundation's 50 years. Blaine Levenson coordinated the pur-chase, installation and dedication of the clock.

And the bulb planting continues … Daffodil Project Co-Chairs Joanna D'Addario and Mary Ann DeRosa havebeen hard at work adding to the 10,000 Dutch MasterDaffodil bulbs planted throughout the city last fall. Thisfall over 12,000 bulbs have been planted at 18 new sites,including Mattison Park, the corner of Hillside Terraceand Ferris Avenue and the White Plains HousingAuthority at the corner of Quarropas and SouthLexington. Be on the lookout next April for signs ofspring bursting forth at these and other locations. Manythanks to White Plains DPW for their assistance andpower tools to facilitate the planting! Contributions to theDaffodil Project are accepted online at wpbf.org or bycheck to WPBF, P.O. Box 1614, White Plains, NY 10602.

Mamaroneck Avenue School is the proud winnerof the 2014-2015 School Garden Competitionwhich began last fall when WPBF distributed 100bulbs to each White Plains school that wished toparticipate. Students and teachers, in somecases led by WPBF volunteers, designed andplanted a daffodil garden on their school groundsin October, 2014. The blooming results werejudged by a team of WPBF volunteers in May,2015. According to MAS teacher Jane Markham,the money will be used to buy books for theschool library, rocking chairs for their desks andmore bulbs for the garden. Solomon Schecter ofWestchester Lower School and RidgewayElementary School both were deemed to haveexceptional gardens. They each received a checkfor $150.

50th Anniversary GalaWhite Plains Beautification Foundation celebratedits Golden Anniversary in grand style Oct. 8th at thehistoric C. V. Rich Mansion, home of The Woman'sClub of White Plains. With over 200 guests in atten-dance, the atmosphere was festive and congratula-tory with appreciation shared by all for the dedicatedefforts of the many who have contributed to the con-tinued success of the Foundation over the past 50years.

Honorees included: architect and former VicePresident Robert Pollack, who was honored posthu-mously for his many contributions to the organiza-

tion; Adopt-a-Park Chair and former PresidentBarbara Vrooman who has chaired the Adopt-a-ParkProgram since 1986; and Beth and Brian Wallach.Brian is the founder and first president of WPBF andhis wife Beth, also a former president, is the creatorand first host of WPBF's cable show, "This BloomingCity," as well as first editor of WPBF's newsletter.
