December 2006 By Larry Shue THE NERD Civic Auditorium N Non-stop Laughter Non-stop Laughter Takes Center Stage! on-stop laughter takes center stage as we’re intro- duced to Willum Cubbert, an aspiring young architect in Terre Haute, Indiana. Willum has it all - a promising career, devoted friends, even, maybe, a serious girl- friend. He is delighted when Rick Steadman, an anony- mous ex-GI who saved his life shows up at his birthday party. However, Willum’s delight soon fades as it becomes apparent that Rick is a hopeless, annoying “nerd” who has no intention of leaving. A bumbling oaf with no social sense, little intelligence and less tact, Rick stays on and on. His prolonged and increasingly annoying presence leads to one uproarious incident after another, until Willum is forced to out-nerd the champ. The Nerd is directed by Art Nemitz, and features a supremely talented cast and crew. Terese Banner (Clelia Waldgrave) will be remem- bered for her performances in A Christmas Story, Joseph… and Tony and Tina’s Wedding. Kevin Drzakowski (Willum Cubbert) is a graduate student at WMU. His theatrical credits include Guys and Dolls, Thieves, and Mrs. California. Ken Holda (Rick Steadman) has a long, impressive list of Civic credits including Will Parker in Oklahoma!, Skimbleshanks in Cats, the title role in Joseph… and Seymour in Little Shop of Horrors. Craig W. Sloan (Warnock Waldgrave) has worked on many stages around town. His credits range from The Diary of Anne Frank at Kalamazoo College to The Lesson at the Whole Art Theatre. Also featured in the cast are Bill Hohnke (Axel Hammond), Evan Shoemaker (Thor Waldgrave), and Kelly White (Tansy McGinnis) who are appearing for the first time on a Civic stage. The Nerd is sure to delight! Order your tickets today by calling the Kalamazoo Civic Theatre Box Office at 269-343-1313 or visit our website at www.kazoocivic.com. We are very pleasedthat Broadway favoriteJerry Dixon will be returningto the Civic to direct our upcoming productionof Crowns. Jerry will beremembered by Civic audiences for his show stopping rendition of Old Man River , which he performed as part ofour Gala Reunion Concert .

Jerry made his Broadway debut in 1990 in the hit musical Once On This Island. He was then cast in theBroadway production of Five Guys Named Moe. Producedby Cameron Mackintosh, this high-octane extravaganzawas a celebration of the music of Louis Jordan.

Equally comfortable in the more intimate environmentsfound Off-Broadway as he is on the Great White Way, Jerryhas appeared in Bright Lights, Big City and Taking a Chanceon Love: The Lyrics and Life of John Latouche. He was alsofeatured in Thunder Knocking On the Door for Yale Rep.

In 2002 Mr. Dixon garnered a Drama DeskNomination for his work in the Off-Broadway production ofJonathan Larson’s tick, tick, BOOM!. Also in 2002, Jerry performed in a benefit concert performance of Once OnThis Island, the funds from which were donated toBroadway Cares and The Cantor Fitzgerald Relief Fund.

In addition to being an accomplished performer,Jerry has also become a much sought-after director. Mostrecently he staged a very successful production of tick, tick,BOOM! in Singapore. Mr. Dixon’s directorial credits includePractical Magic for the Actor’s Studio Theatre and The BodyElectric at Bucks County Playhouse.

According to Jerry “These areChristmas songs that sound like love songs. It’s a good date show!” Presented in association with H Productions

DINNER WITH JERRYWhen: Tuesday, January 9th at 6:30pmWhere: Just Good FoodsFee: $20 (includes the cost of dinner)Reservations: Advanced reservations are required. Limited to 15 guests.

Join Jerry for dinner and an insightful discussion on his life and career. This casual eveningoffers some great one-on-one time with one of Broadway’s favorite performers.

MASTER CLASSESMusical Theatre Lyric InterpretationWhen: Saturday, January 13th, 11:00am to 1:00pmPrerequisite: Actors aged 16 through adult Where: The Carver Center StudioFee: $25Registration: Advanced registration is required. Limited to 20 participants.

It matters not how songs in musical theatre are created. Whether it be music first, thenlyrics – or libretto that is created, then set to music – actors should deal with the textfirst. Jerry’s lyric interpretation session addresses not only what meaning the actor canextract from the author’s words, but how to put that meaning into action. On your feet,on-the-spot learning will let you come away with valuable techniques on how tobecome the author’s greatest tool. Participants must prepare one musical theatre song and be prepared to present itfor critique.

Musical Theatre Scene ExplorationWhen: Saturday, January 20th, 11:00am to 1:00pmPrerequisite: Actors aged 16 through adultWhere: The Carver Center StudioFee: $25Registration: Advanced registration is required. Limited to 20 participants.

In the past, there was a great chasm between the skill and quality of actors in a“straight” play, versus those in a musical play. Happily for those of us who are not justwaiting for the next musical number, that gap has all but disappeared. Writers are cre-ating characters with more depth and complexity. Contemporary issues being dealt within the modern musical are calling for nuances and edge like never before. Even therevivals of the classics are constantly reshaped to provide opportunity for today’s musi-cal theatre actor to reach artistic heights – dramatic, comic, tragic and everything inbetween. Jerry will help you break down musical theatre scenes in exactly the samefashion as any work by Mamet or Shakespeare.

INSIDE THE CARVER CENTER STUDIOWhen: Saturday, January 27th, 2:00pmWhere: The Carver Center StudioFee: $5You won’t want to miss out on this opportunity to spend an informal afternoon with Jerryas he is interviewed by Artistic Director Morrie Enders. As he discusses his impressivecareer, Jerry will share stories of his journey from Kalamazoo to Broadway. An informa-tive question and answer session will conclude the afternoon.

POST SHOW TALK BACKWhen: Saturday, February 10th, following the performance of CrownsWhere: The Civic AuditoriumFee: FREE to patrons of the February 10th performance of Crowns

Audience members wishing to participate are invited to stay for a short question andanswer session with Guest Director Jerry Dixon, the cast, crew, and production staff.

hat do you get when you take the classic thriller The Bad Seed, add a touch of Gypsy, a dashof All about Eve and throw them all into a blender? One of the funniest musical spoofs everwritten, that’s what. Sweet little Tina Denmark was born to entertain. And when you’re bornwith talent in your blood, stardom is your destiny. So, it’s no wonder that this darlinglittle tot would kill to play Pippi Longstocking in her school play, Pippi in Tahiti. With a cast ofrecognizable characters and a laugh-out-loud musical score, Ruthless! is an over-the-top,hilariously skewed look at what it takes to make it big in showbiz. Annie it ain’t!

Directed by Morrie Enders, with Musical Direction by Aaron J. Cassette, and Choreography byKathryn S. Williams, the talented cast features Janine Black, Roger W. Burleigh, Kristin A. Fiore,CeCeWeeks, Emily F. Chateau and appearing for the first time on a Civic stage Audrey Whitby.
