By Dave ScottEvery year at this time the Walk for Memories takes place at the Aud in Simcoe. When I stopped by this year, I found Aileen Bradshaw busy organizing like usual… everything for the event. The doors had just opened and folks started arriving… Scotiabank was there helping collect donations… there was a wonderful silent auction area set up, which had canes, paintings and jewellery… of course we cannot forget the delicious chili and treats that were also there!

But the main purpose was to get out and walk… the floor began to fill with folks… plus some four-legged friends joined in as well.

As I was preparing to take a few photos… I spotted a family ready to head out onto the floor to start their walk… I introduced myself and we began to talk about why they were there to walk.

Andrea’s grandmother, who had passed away in 2008, had Alzheimer’s disease for about ten years…

Andrea Kilian, her husband, Brett, his parents and grandmother had gathered for the walk. Brett Kilian, I found out, is vice president of our local Alzheimer Society… he explained that the goals of the Alzheimer Society are to raise awareness of Alzheimer and dementia related diseases… to educate the public… and of course to help those with Alzheimer’s disease and their families with programs and services that the Society has to offer.

With that, the family was off on their walk… I hung around a little longer and said hello to some folks… the crowd continued to grow…

At the time that we went to press on Monday, this year’s total was just over $15,000.

Congrats to all involved on another successfully year!

Silent auction items such as canes, paintings and jewellery. Inset: Walk for Memories shirts were also available.

By Dave ScottAnyone of us out there, who has had to move from one house to another, knows how much work is entailed.

You start packing up all your belongings and wham-o, you find all sorts of things you had more or less forgotten about. Old boxes of trophies from your childhood, an old Hop Along Cassidy watch (Hey, I wonder what this is worth?), of course a few tattered and torn hockey cards, and that photo of your first car…

Everything you find pulls back those old memories… it is always interesting how those first vehicles play an important part in our lives. Speaking of cars, there is someone doing an even bigger move! I am talking about the move Rick McCall Volkswagen is preparing for in February… when they leave their current location and head down to their newly renovated

showroom at 370 Queensway West… across from the Travelodge.

I popped into the new location a few weeks back to check it out… at the time there was a lot to be done…

Like I said Rick, Ron and the staff have been busy, preparing for their grand opening. You get the sense from the staff that there is excitement in the air about the newly renovated dealership.

Rick himself, will most likely get a little nostalgic when the final moving day arrives. He has been at his current location since 1997… but this February, Rick will usher in a new era of Volkswagen in Simcoe… still on the Queensway, just down the road. Stop by and say hello, there’s a few more weeks still at their current location and then before you know it, they will be at 370 Queensway West with their Volkswagen AG's new worldwide standard white frame concept!

By Dave ScottOne thing our family does, which really pleases me to no end, is read books!

I mean real books… the hard covered things you get at a library or a book store… well, that was until my daughter saved up and purchased her own iPad, now she

finds the books she wants to read all the time… some free, others she buys… but she is always reading. My wife has a little e reader and downloads books from our local library. As for my son, he is all over the map… books, sometime computer, e reader… whatever he can get his hands on.

Myself, I am still old school… I’ve got to feel the pages, check out the

cover, fall asleep with it… and not worry about breaking it.

I guess my point is to encourage your kids to read… books, magazines, whatever they enjoy… it can be the perfect escape from a hard day…

a nice way to relax… and hey, you may even learn a thing or two.

Sorry, got to go now and get back to reading OZZY’s book… talk about a crazy read!

Just read

By Dave ScottWell Super Bowl Sunday is just about here, and folks it is time to pick which team will win. For those who maybe don’t know who is playing this year… it is the New England Patriots versus the New York Giants.

For those that follow the game, it was just a few short years ago that the Giants defeated the Patriots, ending their perfect season in the biggest game of the year.

I think that the Giants defence in that game simply overpowered the Patriots offence… and who can forget the scrambling of Eli Manning late in that game, escaping the grasp of the defensive lineman and chucking the pigskin downfield to his receiver, which helped set the winning touchdown!

If this weekend’s game is anything like the one a few years ago, we are in for a treat.

As for my pick for the game…

I am going with the Giants! They seem to be the team of destiny this year… but you know Tom Brady and the rest of the Patriots will do everything in their power to make up for that Super Bowl they lost

to the Giants… but in the end the Giants will prevail 24-17!

Oh and we cannot forget the commercials… which are always fun!

John won the Tip O’Neil award 2011, given out by the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame to the Canadian baseball player “judged to have excelled in individual achievement and team contribution while adhering to the highest ideals of the game of baseball”. The award was shared with Joey Votto.

The Norfolk Pro’s produced posters of John that were displayed around Norfolk County and offered out to the community at large for a donation which would be given back to Norfolk’s hard ball Associations. At the February 5th event, the wrap up of this campaign will include presentation of cheques to Port Dover Minor Baseball, Delhi Minor Baseball and Simcoe Minor Baseball.

By MARG WERDEN How much wood woulda woodchuck chuck? While farmers and gardeners may dislike groundhogs (also known as woodchucks, marmots, or whistle pigs), many other people enjoy celebrating the one day dedicated to these furry little rodents.

Groundhog Day, celebrated in many communities across North America on February 2, began in North America as a Pennsylvania German custom in the 1700s and 1800s. However, it has its origins in ancient European weather lore. There are several trains of thought on the actual origin of the tradition.

Thousands of years ago, when farmers had no choice but to watch for signs from Mother Nature to predict the weather, people in the area of Europe now known as Germany believed that the badger had the power to predict the coming of spring and they watched this animal to know when to plant their crops. An old belief was that a sunny Candlemas Day, also celebrated on February 2, would lead to winter lasting for another six weeks. People believed that if an animal, perhaps a badger or a hedgehog, was frightened by its shadow on Candlemas and returned to its burrow, winter was not yet over. A cloudy day, on the other hand, meant an early spring. They brought this belief to America and adopted the groundhog as their weather predictor.

The day may also have its origins in Scotland. An old Scottish rhyme says: "If Candlemas Day is bright and clear, there'll be two winters in the year."

The species of groundhog, Marmota monax, which we see in this area, is one of 14 species of marmots. They range from eastern Alaska, across Canada and south as far as

Georgia. They are rare west of the Great Plains, but a close relative, the prairie dog, can be found there. Groundhogs are rodents and are related to animals such as mice, porcupines, squirrels and beavers. Although usually seen on the ground, groundhogs can also climb trees and are quite proficient swimmers.

Before the advent of European settlements, groundhogs lived in forested areas. However, once the land was cleared for farms and towns, they moved to fields and “edge” habitats, the border between forests and towns. They are adaptable animals and are now found in many suburban areas where “edge” can be found and where they eat grasses, plants, fruits and tree bark. This, however, makes them particularly unpopular with gardeners as they can decimate an area in a short time while fattening up for the winter.

Because groundhogs are true hibernators, they live a feast-or-famine lifestyle and gorge themselves all summer to build up their fat reserves. After the first frost, they head to their underground burrows, shut down their metabolism, and sleep until spring, (or perhaps until February 2.) While hibernating, its heart rate drops from eighty beats per minute to five per minute and its body temperature is just slightly warmer than the temperature of the burrow, dropping from 99°F to 45°F.

Groundhogs are excellent diggers and their front feet have long, curved claws that they use to dig their burrows. Their burrows can range from simple and shallow dens to extensive tunnel systems 25 to 30 feet long. The burrows are very complex with separate chambers for different needs such as sleeping, nesting, and toileting.

Unfortunately, the burrows can leave the soil weak, resulting in damage to farm equipment and injuries to horses and livestock. However, in an effort to coexist with

wildlife, consider the enormous hardships these animals encounter because so much of their habitat has been destroyed. Each year they are forced into closer contact with humans and must compete with us for food, shelter and space. With a little understanding, patience and a few precautions and common sense steps, we can all enjoy the interesting wild animals who share our backyards and cities.

There are several ways to rid your garden of a problem groundhog. A wire mesh fence, extended down into the ground at least two feet, may do the trick. Ammonia-soaked rags may also work as the groundhogs will mistake the ammonia for a predator’s urine. Place the rags, on pieces of wood so that the ammonia does not leach into the ground, close to the garden so the groundhog can smell them. If you have a cat, used kitty litter will serve the same purpose.

The groundhog usually stays close to home, rarely going more than a few hundred metres from their burrows. They have keen senses of smell and hearing, which keeps

them safe from predators such as humans, dogs, coyotes, foxes, bears, mink, bobcats, hawks, weasels and owls. They emit a loud whistle when startled or frightened to alert other groundhogs about danger nearby and then continue a “chuck-chuck” chatter until they are once more at ease.

And just how much wood would a woodchuck chuck? About 700 pounds! A wildlife biologist once measured the inside volume of a typical burrow and estimated that, if wood had filled the hole instead of soil, the woodchuck would have chucked about 700 pounds of wood.

With over 100 cats and kittens in care, Simcoe and District Humane Society is holding a special week-long adoption event to help ALL their cats and kittens find their forever homes. After the largest rescue for the Society of 156 felines from one home in May of last year, 36 of these animals are still waiting to find a home to call their own. 32 of these animals are black.

In total, Simcoe and District Humane Society helped over 300 adoptable felines in 2011. 243 of these animals were adopted last year. We are very proud to say that there were more black cats adopted than any other colour BUT the Society still has over 40 black cats in their care.

It is well known that the last animals adopted in most rescues and shelters are black and volunteers hope that the special Adopt a Mini Panther event will entice families to adopt a black cat and experience their very social behaviour. Most black cats are outgoing, good natured, make great companions and fit into their humane family's everyday routine easily.

It is true that black cats carry a stigma of bad luck and are associated with many superstitions BUT in many countries owning a

black cat is very prestigious and it is believed they bring good luck and fortune.

The SDHS's "Adopt a Mini Panther Event" will be held through this week until February 5, 2012 and spayed or neutered black cats may be adopted for just $30. Every adoptable pet is vaccinated, de-wormed, flea treated, micro-chipped and very ready to purr their way into

the hearts of their new humane friends.

For more information on the event or to book an appointment to visit your new furry friend please contact [email protected] or visit www.s-dhs.ca.

By Dave ScottBy the time you read this story Jeff Bergen will have already embarked on an adventure most of us can only dream about. When we are kids the world is our playground… our minds are limitless… our vision is clear… and our hopes and dreams are endless!

This story starts out with Jeff, who is from the Port Rowan area… he grew up there, attending Valley Heights Secondary School. It was during his time at the Valley he became interested in photography… he was on a trip to Thailand, taking photo after photo… he remembers just using a small camera at the time… and deciding afterwards that he needed a better camera. So that is what he did when he got home … purchased a better camera and photography seeped into his mindset.

It wasn’t long before it was off to university in Toronto to study photography. His interest started to lean towards commercial work… and he started to follow the world leader in the field, that being Yuri Arcurs from Denmark.

Year two of schooling began and Jeff just wasn’t sure he was getting what he needed from the program… he wanted the life experience… the practicality that happens everyday in the business… he was searching for something… but what was it? Then he found it, he came across a photography boot camp that Yuri Arcurs was preparing to run in Cape Town, South Africa. Jeff decided to apply and see if he could get accepted into the camp.

There were over 1,500 applications from around the world (Dubai, Philippines, Thailand, China, Australia, Belarus, Netherlands, Ireland, Hungary, Denmark, Finland, Poland, Norway, Ukraine, Romania, Spain, United States, Mexico, Brazil, Tanzania, South Africa and of course Canada) vying for only 120 spots at the camp.

Jeff was one of the 120 accepted… so it was off to South Africa to attend the camp and learn from one of the world’s best.

There was one more carrot to the camp. The top fifteen photographers would be offered a three-year contract to work for Yuri.

At the camp Jeff established himself… getting his

project noticed… he admits that his equipment wasn’t as good as some of his counterparts… but he kept his head down and continued to work hard… he knew he had a shot.

The last project of the boot camp was to find a location and do a shoot with models. Jeff set to work using a couple of friends who modelled and a coffee shop in South Africa as his backdrop… his gut feeling was that it was some of his best work… and then evaluation time came…. drum roll please… Jeff took first overall cementing a

three-year contract to work with Yuri!

Not bad for kid from NORFOLK.

Like I said in the beginning… Jeff is now back in South Africa, hard at work. He was able to return home for a week… just long enough to tie up some loose ends, visit his family, and go again. He believes after South Africa he will be off to Denmark and then travel Europe… pretty cool!

Hey Jeff, ‘Congrats!’

Courtesy of Long Point Region Conservation AuthorityYou might find it easy to identify trees in the summer – just look at the leaves. But what do you do in winter when the leaves are gone?

On Saturday, February 18, join the Long Point Region Conservation Authority and Norfolk Field Naturalists for an afternoon outing to help you identify trees in winter.

The Winter Tree Identification program starts at 1:00 pm inside the Conservation Education Centre. Here you will learn tips to identify a variety of trees

by the three B’s: buds, branches and bark.

Then it’s outside to put your identification skills to the test. Participants will enjoy a scenic, informative nature hike through the conservation area’s trails with Backus Heritage Conservation

Area Director Nick De Serranno and Dolf Wynia from the Norfolk Field Naturalists.

Dress for the weather as the nature walk is approximately 90 minutes in length. Admission to Winter Tree Identification special event is by donation.

Contact either Nick DeSerranno at 519-586-2201 or Dolf Wynia at 519-875-3350 for more information. Backus Heritage Conservation Area is located 2km north of Port Rowan.
