Norman Disney & Young’s design philosophy embodies a commitment to systems that are economical in first cost, have optimum energy consumption commensurate with the application and are easy and economical to maintain the key component of this philosophy is simplicity of design.

The firm spends considerable effort evaluating system types, methods of conserving energy, materials and equipment to establish the economic areas for use of different systems and the degree of quality required in individual components for reliable low-maintenance operation.

The capital, operating and maintenance cost of systems produced on this basis has been consistently less than the cost of other comparable systems.

We seek to keep the client fully informed at all stages and to actively involved the client in decisions on available options to ensure that he is able to make an informed decision on items such as the degree of flexibility provided and incorporation of features that provide operating economy.

In all disciplines provided by Norman Disney & Young, key personnel have had extensive contracting experience which has created an acute awareness of the necessity for design to be practical and easily installed.

The concepts developed by the firm and applied successfully on major projects have been recognised in numerous engineering design, energy and building industry awards.

Emphasis is placed on detailed coordination during the design phase between the services and coordination of these services with structural and architectural features.

Norman Disney & Young has a reputation for producing high quality building services systems and integrated engineering solutions at competitive prices. This has been achieved by adopting a considered design approach which matches system capacity to identified load requirements. Excess capacity is never provided “just in case”, rather flexibility is incorporated by ensuring that services systems are really extended or supplemented as operational requirements change throughout the life of the facility.

Norman Disney & Young does not require the tendering contractors to accept responsibility for the design and thus the need for contractors to do a detailed design check or make allowances for “unknowns” is eliminated.

Involvement Of PrincipalsWithin Norman Disney & Young each major division is managed by a senior engineer with established experience and expertise.

The managers are assisted by project engineers and draftspersons who are selected to perform particular tasks relevant to their skills.

Managers and the appointed Director in charge will be actively involved in this project for its whole duration to ensure that engineering quality is maintained, time programmes are met and budgets achieved.

Cost ControlThe ability to design engineering systems within established budgets is a key feature of Norman Disney & Young’s approach to engineering design.

In the initial phases of the works, cost estimates are prepared on a global or area basis to align with the sketch design. These costs are subdivided into various areas to be used as a basis for future cost comparisons.

As the design development proceeds, the engineering elements are costed and compared with initial area allowances and, if appropriate, agreed adjustments are made or alternative design solutions are prepared.

During the detailed design phase the engineering components are costed by elemental take-off and again compared with previous cost allocations.

Finally, a pre-tender estimate is prepared on a similar basis to a contractor’s take-off to establish that agreed budgets are achievable.

ComputerisationAll drawings will be prepared on the NDY Computerised Drafting System.

Our CAD office has available:

◆ 10 nos. of AutoCAD workstations (Release 13, 14, LT 2002 & Intellicad 2002 Professional);

◆ Plotting devices including colour plotter.

All workstations are connected to the office’s Window NT network and are able to transfer files electronically via the internet.

Norman Disney & Young has also developed in-house computer programmes for Heat Load, Duct and Piping Design, Lighting Design, Fault Level Calculations, Lift Analysis and Design, and Contract Administration Financial Control and other softwares.

Proprietary programs such as Cala, Carrier E20, ESP2, Ice Storage Evaluation, Power Pac and PDNP are also used.

The firm is a member of the Association for Computer Aided Design Ltd. (A.C.A.D.S) and accesses the mechanical and electrical services programmes prepared by this association.

Building Services Maintenance and Cabling Management Data Base packages are also available for this project via NDY developed software programmes “Normandy” and “Cable Manager” respectively.

One of the most interesting emerging technologies is CAD-based Facilities Management systems. These systems replace the conventional paper-based “as-installed” documentation by storing all data on a CAD system, with an associated database of relevant information. We have recognised the future importance such systems will have with the ongoing management and maintenance of a service-intensive project and have recently invested substantial time in researching these systems.

Norman Disney & Young is also connected to the world of internet via high speed Dedicated Digital Internet Access (DDA) Our international offices are able to communicate and exchange electronic documents via e-mail and our dedicated Files Transfer Protocol (FTP) site.

Special LightingCreative lighting design is an art that seeks to provide solutions which integrate aesthetics with function. A successful lighting design will enhance the finishes selected by the Interior Designer/Architect.

NDY Light brings together an extensive range of practical skills and experience that encompass interior design, theatre, heritage and luminaire design for application to interior and exterior lighting solutions. These skills are combined with the Lightscape Visualisation System to offer a complete design and visualisation service.

Lightscape represents a new generation of computer graphics technology combining proprietary radiosity algorithms with a physically based lighting interface. The programs unique lighting interface allows us to import photometric data available from lighting manufacturers and render the lighting effects within the space. The flexibility and performance of the program allows us to rapidly test various lighting and material combinations to obtain the desired visual effects.

Daylight analysis can also be done to determine the levels of natural light that would be available within a space at various times of the day and throughout the year.

NDY Light has a proven track record in applying the technology available to produce solutions that have been pleasing to our clients and acknowledged by our peers.

Power Quality AssuranceNDY Power Quality is a specialist group within Norman Disney &Young solving power quality issues which threaten life safety, the performance of building systems and the reliable operation of electronic equipment.

NDY Power Quality provides expert assistance in all areas of power systems, from earthing to transient suppression, power regulation to harmonics. The latest generation of PQ test apparatus and analysis techniques are utilised by NDY Power Quality specialists to detect, characterise and recommend corrective action plans for any size of installation.

The professional services of NDY Power Quality ranges from trouble shooting, site audits and protection analysis, to the preparation of comprehensive reports incorporating engineered recommendations. Extensive professional support is also provided with the implementation of corrective strategies.

Energy OptimisationNorman Disney & Young has recently invested in some of the latest software packages specifically designed to optimise energy usage and to achieve lower operating costs for mechanical and air conditioning systems.

Thermal SimulationThis interactive software enables the evaluation of various passive cooling options and “what if” exercises to determine the optimum building design by addressing issues such as:

◆ Single vs Double Glazing;

◆ Type and optimum thickness of the glazing particularly for an Atrium;

◆ Type and most cost effective thickness of wall and roof thermal insulation;

◆ Use of air gaps to reduce heat conduction through the structures;

◆ Analysis of other building materials.

This Thermal Simulation code performs heat load calculations utilising the “world first” drawing interface facility to determine the cooling and heating requirements of any shaped building. For any form of possible air conditioning system (Variable Air Volume, Chilled Ceilings, Multizone or others) for a complex, it can predict the energy usage, indoor temperature and comfort conditions for any hour, day or month for an entire year and takes into account the historical local weather data for the particular geographical location.

The software also incorporates a very sophisticated Shadow Modelling capability which can display effects of shadows from adjacent buildings and structures. The output takes the form of colour graphs and charts, which are simple and easy to understand.

Thermal ModellingThe highly technical engineering concepts involved with analysis of indoor comfort conditions and smoke patterns can be viewed graphically.

The VR (virtual reality) version of the Computational Fluid Dynamics(CFD) computer modelling software another unique example of the latest enhancement. The software has just been released this year and uses such facilities as “culprits” and other objects in compiling a three dimensional model, say a Conference Room with all the furniture, people and equipment. Once the engineering computation has been completed, a “walk through” of the occupied area can be carried out with computer equivalent of temperature and air velocity instruments to read the indoor conditions and air movements at any location within the room. The parameters can then be altered to reflect different usage of the room such as conversion to a Training Centre with an increased quantity of electronic heat generating equipment.

Once again a full evaluation can be carried out of the indoor environment. The software can also be used to perform Smoke and Fire Analysis. A 3-D colour coded smoke and temperature chart can be produced for any vertical or horizontal plane.

Fire And Life SafetyThe Uniform Building By-Law of Malaysia (UBBL) has onerous conditions in terms of Fire and Life safety aspects associated with Building complexes. NDY has developed a good understanding of the UBBL from a Fire and Life Safety view point and has provided well researched engineered solutions utilising the latest software that have not only met the basic UBBL requirements but have resulted in significant capital cost savings for Clients.

Lift DesignNorman Disney & Young's Vertical Transportation Software is vendor independent and allows lift requirements to be established without reference or commitment to a particular lift company.

A range of lift solutions, including comprehensive cost benefit analyses, can be quickly produced for a particular concept. The software enables Norman Disney & Young to interact with the Architect through the concept design phase to optimise the architectural/vertical transportation equation Calculation output includes;

◆ Lift performance characteristics;

◆ Lift motor room dimensions, and;

◆ Lift core dimensions and layout.

The software not only facilitates the design selection, but by allowing numerous performance criteria to be evaluated allows the designers to select the optimum number of lifts required to achieve the desired level of passenger service.
