Students Raise Over $20,000 for Clean Water Initiatives

On April 13, NA Project Water’s 2017 dodgeball tournament raised more than $20,000 to help provide clean water and educational facilities in developing villages in Africa.

The money raised from this student-run initiative will benefit World Vision’s clean water well construction and WASH program, which aims to provide people in Uganda with clean water through wells and water supply systems in schools and health facilities.

More than 800 students participated in the all-day tournament at both high schools, with a championship event taking place at NA Senior High School that night.

In addition to the dodgeball tournament, students were given the opportunity to learn more about the water crisis and other tough issues facing the people living in developing nations. NA Named a "Best Community for Music Education"

For the 11th consecutive year, North Allegheny School District has been honored with the Best Communities for Music Education designation from The NAMM Foundation for its outstanding commitment to music education. NASD is among just four percent of school districts in the nation selected for this award in 2017.

The Best Communities for Music Education designation is awarded to districts that demonstrate significant achievement in efforts to provide music access and education to students. Go Behind the Scenes of a Music

Video with Remake Learning Days at NA

On Friday, May 26, NA Senior High School will be hosting a unique opportunity to experience what goes into the production of a music video.

Taking inspiration from the "Take On Me" music video by A-ha, participants will engage in rotoscope animation, a technique in which animators trace over footage, frame by frame, for use in live venues. They will also learn about microphone placement, sound design, video production, livestreaming, and lighting.

Join us for this exciting, hands-on learning opportunity through Remake Learning Days!

Annual Fashion Show Goes "Around the World"

The annual fashion show presented by the North Allegheny Fashion Club this month took on a global theme as models walked the runway wearing student-made designs inspired by countries all over the world. The show also included exciting performances by Indian dancers, Irish dancers, a vocalist, and one of the winning entries from the NA Diversity Contest.

All proceeds from the show were donated to the Miss 22 Quties Special Needs Beauty Pageant, an event designed to build friendships and instill confidence in young adults with special needs.

IMS Students Inspired to Lead Tobacco-Free Lives

Ingomar Middle School's annual Kick Butts Day on April 13 featured an action-packed assembly about the dangers of tobacco and the many benefits to living a healthy, tobacco-free life. Students listened to guest speakers share their stories, saw some talented creative performances from fellow students, and watched an exciting students vs. teachers basketball game.

The assembly also included the presentation of a $1,000 check to the school for winning this year’s National Red Ribbon Week Photo Contest, a special recognition of the students’ commitment to making smart, healthy choices.

Final Days Before NA Marathon Challenge

Right now, nearly 90 North Allegheny employees and Board Members are training to run the 2017 Pittsburgh Marathon, either as part of a relay team with fellow co-workers or going solo with the half or full marathon!

Many of the participants have said that this challenge has been a great way to be more active and embrace healthier lifestyles. Those running the relay are also excited to engage in some friendly competition with the other schools and see who wins the trophy for fastest team!

Tune into KDKA's Pittsburgh Today Live on May 1, which will feature three NA representatives talking about the challenge. Also, be sure to check out our website and social media pages after race weekend to view photos and see which school won the relay.

PES Student Wins "Kids of STEEL" Slogan Contest

Congratulations to Peebles Elementary student Lily Reis, who was selected as the winner of the Kids of STEEL Street Graphic Contest!

Lily's winning slogan, "Smile at the Mile," will be displayed in a street graphic at the finish line of the 2017 Pittsburgh Kids Marathon, a one mile race.

As the contest winner, Lily also earned Peebles a $250 grant for the school's physical education programs.

Nutrition Takes Root at IES with Unique Garden

Students at Ingomar Elementary had the opportunity to plant tomatoes, arugula, peppers, basil, rainbow chard, eggplant, and more in the school's new innovative, stand-alone gardening system.

The garden has introduced an interactive STEAM element to the school's health and physical education classes and lessons on nutrition education.

Teachers are hopeful that taking this hands-on approach to learning about nutrition will encourage the students to continue on the path to healthy food choices and overall wellness. So far, students have loved watching the plants grow and are excited to get the chance to taste the veggies soon!
