population estimates) • Age breakdown: Under 16s 7,974 (18.5%), Working Age 27,084
(62.9%) and Over 65s 8,008 (18.6%).• Ethnic Minority: 97.6% of people living in Barnsley are White.
North Area is similar at 97.3% but there are some differences at ward level – Old Town is 95.7% and Darton West is 98.4%
• Deprivation: 21.8% of areas in Barnsley are amongst the 10% most deprived in England. · Within the North area Council in IMD 2015, there were 16% of areas amongst the 10% most deprived in England.

Economic Regeneration• New business start ups: In 2015 there were 991 new business start ups across the borough, 187 of which were in North Area or 19%. • The number of new start ups has been declining year on year in the North Area and across Barnsley since a peak in 2010 (246 and 1302 respectively).• During this period the number of new start ups (as a percentage of all start ups) in the North Area and its wards has remained constant at between 18% and 19% for the North Area, 3% for St Helens and 5% for the other wards.
