Little mariners learn about sea shanties. June 6: Sharks! Carcharocles megalodon is quite the aquatic dinosaur! Little mariners will learn about our prehistoric shark and make origami shark bookmarks to take home. The class ends with identification time. June 20: Mermaids, Princesses of the Sea! Students make hand-print mermaids and mosaic mermaids out of tissue paper. They also discuss the mythology behind the mermaid and read a mermaid story! July 11: Maritime Art New! Students paint famous maritime scenes from ships to sea creatures. This camp will focus on maritime arts but will also give students an opportuni- ty to create their own masterpieces. Each day will be a special topic on art, literature, and music with hands-on activities and inspiration galore! Students will also read and write maritime literature. Quest for Blackbeard June 19: Presented by Baylus Brooks Was Blackbeard a notorious pirate or was he, like Stede Bonnet, from a well-to-do family? Baylus C. Brooks, the historian and author has spent a great deal of time researching Edward Teach’s (Thache) family history. Brooks will share his theories and research, then let you decide.Port Town Filth, Lewdness and Debauchery: 18th Century Social, Safety and Sanitation Regulations July 17: Presented by Kristan Phillips As 18th Century port towns grew in population, so did the challenges of accommodating residents, and transient sailors and visitors. Concern over outbreaks of disease, and social disorder spurred the development of public works and a myriad of safety and health regulations. Join Phillips as she explores the culture of colonial ports. Mary Read & Anne Bonney August 21: Presented by Christine Brin These two women pirates, who disguised themselves as men and often surpassed the abilities of their male counterparts, have always been a topic of public interest. Brin will share intriguing information regarding their lives before piracy! Could their choice of piracy have a connection to their early childhood? North Carolina’s Life Saving Service October 16: Presented byJames D. Charlet It is our pleasure to welcome James D. Charlet from Hatteras to discuss the history of the US Life Saving Service in North Carolina. Before the formation of the US Coast Guard from the Life Saving Service and the US Cutter Service, these locals risked their lives to save lives and vessels whenever in danger.Thomas Nast and the Historical Imagery of Santa Claus November 20: Presented by Jim McKee Did you know, before the Civil War, our image of Santa Claus was quite different? Based on a Greek Orthodox bishop, St. Nicholas was a tall, thin man considered the patron saint of sailors and children. The secular Santa we know today is a creation from the Victorian period. Join Jim McKee as we learn the history of Santa Claus and how this iconic figure played into Civil War history.

Maritime Movie Masterpiece: Moby Dick (1956) January 16: Starring Gregory Peck Join the museum as we make fresh popcorn and spend two hours watching Captain Ahab (Gregory Peck) go mad trying to hunt down the great white whale! This classic will kick off a great season of maritime topics and lectures. “A Night with Venus, A Lifetime with Mercury” Blackbeard’s Blockade of Charleston Harbor. February 20: Presented by David Moore David Moore, Maritime Archaeologist with the NC Maritime Museum at Beaufort, will discuss one of the most interesting blockades of Charleston Harbor. Blackbeard’s crew had developed quite a problem and needed medicinals to treat the afflictions resulting from their unsavory behaviors. Seven Down and Eight Up: The Exploits of Long-Time Diving Partners March 20: Presented by Wayne Strickland & Denny Breese Most divers have incredible stories to share, but none so comical as the raising of the tug Marjorie McAllister. How many times did she sink? Seven! Join us as we welcome two longtime friends and their stories of diving North Carolina waters. Stede Bonnet: The Underappreciated Gentleman Pirate April 17: Presented by Dr. Lindley Butler The Gentleman Pirate often stands in the shadow of other buccaneers like Blackbeard and Calico Jack, but Stede Bonnet has an interesting story. Theories have been postulated, but do we really understand the significance of this marauder? Butler explores this and other thoughts on Stede Bonnet. Otway Burns: War of 1812 Privateer or Pirate?? May 15: Presented by Andrew Duppstadt

Using Otway Burns, one of North Carolina’s most famous privateers as an example, Andrew Duppstadt will explore the fine line between privateer and pirate, and share intriguing stories of those considered heroes by one side and villains by the other.

Maritime Valentines (evening program for children 6–11) February 14: 5:30–8 p.m., $20 While Mom and Dad go out on a date, our little mariners will have a great time making maritime valentines and watching age-appropriate movies. Participants make valentines with seashells and learn about sailors who sent beautiful creations to their sweethearts. Pizza will be served at 6:00.Civil War Trust Park Day, April 7: 9 a.m.–1:00 p.m. Join the museum as we clean up the grounds, plant flowers, and trim trees. Don’t worry, if you are not an outdoor person, we have several painting projects inside as well as organization and cleaning tasks. All ages are welcome and a hot dog lunch (vegetarian options are available) is provided. Join the fun and support your Civil War fortifications in the Lower Cape Fear!WWII on Land & Sea August 11: 1–4 p.m., FREE Interpretation of American soldiers and sailors, and life on the home front, give visitors a larger picture of the greatest generation. The program features vehicles, weaponry, and clothing, and includes activities about communication, submarine spotters, and more. Axis and Allied forces are interpreted to illustrate WWII participants. Gentleman Pirate Tercentenary Dinner and Fundraiser September 21: 5:30–8 p.m. $40 per person Join us for traditional sea shanties, a keynote speaker on piracy and the best victuals from the Atlantic Ocean. One complimentary grog with your meal. Cash bar and a barbarous good time will be had by all. Proceeds benefit the Maritime Museum’s educational activities. Stede Bonnet 300th September 22–23: FREE Two full days of piracy will entertain, educate, and engross all ages. Dress like a pirate, learn about life aboard vessel, and meet a few dashing swashbucklers. Don’t forget Stede’s demise on Sunday as we reenact the trial of the Gentleman Pirate.Halloween Ghost Ship October 27: 1–3 p.m., $10 New and creative crafts mark this haunted program! Get into the spirit as we create ghost ship models, glow-in-the-dark skeleton fish, and make maritime “trick or treat” bags to pillage the neighborhood for candy!

Join us for classes that were originally created for youngsters, but have been modified for adults! BYOB, relax, and laugh. Classes are from 5:30–7:00 p.m. Class fee is $25.00, members $12.50. All classes with fees are subject to state and local taxes. Cheese/crackers/veggie trays are included.

January 13: Sea Shanties for Adults Learn why these songs were sung on vessels and hear some of the more interesting and somewhat impetuous songs from the Age of Sail to the menhaden fishermen of the 20th century. February 10: Gyotaku! This Japanese art form is colorful, creative, and fun! Learn to make fish impressions and create your own to display in your home. Discover a new medium and squish fish with friends! March 10: Those Fiery Irish Pirates! March seems to be the month for all things Irish. Learn about Ireland’s Queen of the Pirates, Grace O’Malley, and create your own pirate garden flag!April 14: Maritime Cooking: Got Crabs? This class will teach you everything you need to know about our favorite crustacean. From cooking and picking, to making the perfect crab dip, join museum educators as we show you the culinary versatility of the crab! May 5: Maritime Literature This literature class citing Edgar Allan Poe, Alfred Lord Tennyson, and Herman Melville, promises interesting voyages into the world of sailors, lost love, and the perils of maritime life. June 9: Maritime Cooking: Sizzling Sassy Shrimp! Boiled shrimp, fried shrimp, shrimp dip - learn it all the Lower Cape Fear way! This class will explore different ways to prepare this popular decapod crustacean.

Seasons Greetings at Sea, November 24: 1–3 p.m., $10 From beach scene ornaments to painting sea shells, this holiday program is not just for kids. Several crafts are appropriate for a variety of ages and abilities. Start your holiday off “on beach time” by creating cards to send to loved ones, and decorations to deck the halls!
