LAKE STEVENS — Fourteen musicians from Haller and Post middle schools pa r t ic ipated recently in the Mount Pilchuck Music Educa-tors Honor Band Festi-val. The students joined an 87-member ensemble, attended two rehearsals and recorded a live CD, all on one day, Jan. 29, at Cavelero Mid-High in Lake Stevens.

Students were chosen based on skill and abili-ties through a point sys-tem and selected to fill the instrumentation needs of the honor band.

The MPMEA Honor Band was conducted by guest conductor, Bil l Klouse, who has taught music at all levels in Washington for more than 30 years.

“Klouse is a much sought after music adju-dicator and clinician,” said the band teacher, Joe Horsak.

“He is the recipient of the 2002 and the 2006 Outstanding Music Edu-cator for the Commence-ment Bay region. In 2007 he was named the Wash-ington State WMEA/WIA A Music Educator of the Year. This year he was honored as one of the

National Federation of High Schools Music Edu-cator of the year,” Horsak said.

The Mount Pilchuck Music region reaches from Stanwood to Darrington and from Monroe to Mill Creek and Everett. The annual honor band festi-val allows highest achiev-ing student musicians the opportunity to rehearse and perform with other serious students from the region.

“We only had two prac-tices for honor band and everyone was shocked that we sounded like we had a long time to prac-t ice,” clarinetist Dani

Dietz said.“It challenged me and

I did things that I couldn’t do before,” said trumpeter Austin Hughs.

“It was a lot of fun,” Rosie Boyle said.

The band directors for Haller and Post, Kipp

Otterness and Joe Hor-sak, agreed.

“It was really inspiring for everyone.”

Honor Band partici-pants from Haller and Post Middle School include:

Flute — Abbie Basher,

Rachael Wilson.Clarinet — Danjela

Dietz, Sheltyn Rose.Alto Clarinet — Jacob

ARLINGTON — Puget Sound Blood Center will hold a blood drive at High-land Christian School, 135 S. French St., from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., Thurs-day, Feb. 26, thanks to the efforts of HCS senior Chel-sea Graber, 18.

This is Chelsey’s sec-ond year organizing the blood drive, said her mother, Cherene Graber.

She has also organized two food drives that ben-ef ited Oso Community Food Bank.

C h e l s e a b e c a m e involved with Puget Sound Blood Center after giving blood with her mom at age 16.

“It was a great experi-ence and didn’t hurt much. I found out it could save three lives.”

Chelsea also learned that one of her favorite teacher’s life was saved by a blood transfusion and decided then that she wanted to plan more blood drives. She spoke with someone at the blood drive and got a phone number, and off she went to orga-nize a drive at her school.

“Because you have to be 16, most of the students at the school are too young to donate, so I am reach-ing out to the community,” Chelsea said.

Last year she had 48 people donate blood and she’s hoping for more this year.

Once the drive is over, she will have to write a report to get her commu-nity service credits for graduation. Chelsea plans to attend college next year.

The Feb. 26 blood drive is on the second floor com-mons area of the old high school. It will be closed for lunch from 10:30 - 11:15 a.m. For information call Puget Sound Blood Center 1-800-398-7888.
