This event has always been a highlight of the year as we close out the boating season and celebrate the installation of our new Commodore, Bridge Officers, and Board of Governors. As the outgoing Commodore, I sa- lute the new leadership team and feel confident our club will continue to grow and continue to be the best on the Chesapeake. At this time I want to thank the membership who have supported the club this past year. Special thanks to the Board of Governors who spent many hours prior to and during meetings handling current issues and putting in place strategies to keep the club financially solvent. NERYC has transitioned from a small social club with a few slips to a full fledged yacht club with a two mil- lion dollar mortgage on our state of the art float- ing docks. It is imperative that we support all efforts to market our club for outside events and continue to seek new members. We have the best marina on the Upper Chesapeake and anything less than 90% slip occupancy severely impacts our financial solvency. I encourage members who have an interest in becoming a bridge officer in 2013 to contact me or a member of the nominating committee. As soon to be Immediate Past Commodore, I will chair the committee and will be seeking candidates for next year. Please step up to the plate if you have an interest, I promise it will be a ride you won’t forget. In closing and my last article as Commodore, First Lady Laura and I want to express our appreciation to those members who supported us over the last four years as we fulfilled the responsibilities of each bridge position. We hope to see many of you at the Commodore’s Ball celebrating our new Commodore and First Lady. Commodore Joe Reynolds

COMMODORE’S REPORT

The North East River Yacht Club is alive and well as we approach the “Change of Watch” at our Commodore’s Ball on November 5, 2011. This event has always been a highlight of the year as we close out the boating season and celebrate the installation of our new Commodore, Bridge Officers, and Board of Governors. As the outgoing Commodore, I sa-lute the new leadership team and feel confident our club will continue to grow and continue to be the best on the Chesapeake. At this time I want to thank the membership who have supported the club this past year. Special thanks to the Board of Governors who spent many hours prior to and during meetings handling current issues and putting in place strategies to keep the club financially solvent. NERYC has transitioned from a small social club with a few slips to a full fledged yacht club with a two mil-lion dollar mortgage on our state of the art float-ing docks.

This will be my last column as Vice Commodore seeing as how you chose to elect me to serve as your Commodore for the coming year. I would like to thank those members that served on my committees this past year for their help ands service to the club. Doug Cain on Legal, Bob Efford on Insurance, and Susan Andrews on House, all of you made my year as V/C relatively easy. Of course there were many others who assisted me and my committee chairs, but if I tried to name them all I would surly leave someone out so let me just say, Thank You, to all who were involved with the club this past year.

Later this month, you will be receiving your dues renewal notice for 2012. As was announced at the AGM in October, dues will once again be remaining at $600. Please remember to return your signed membership agreement with your dues payment, as your renewal can not be processed without that agreement. The agreements were mailed out with your AGM packets. If you have misplaced yours, they will be available for download on the clubs web site. I encourage all members to renew early. If you have any questions or concerns about renewing, please feel free to contact me and we will discuss the matter.

While we are on the topic of money, I want to thank all the members who promptly paid their assessment this past year. No one, including myself, likes having to pay an unanticipated expense such as the assessment. However I assure you the assessment was necessary for the continued operation of the club. Over the past 3 months, we have incurred several unanticipated, expensive, and legally required, repairs to the clubs infrastructure. Without the money generated by the assessment, even by tapping into our line of credit, we would have had to shut the club. I know that some members were upset by the tone of some of the reminder letters that went out to the general membership regarding the payment status of the assessment. These reminders are required by our by-laws and are not meant to threaten or intimidate but rather to offer clarification of the collection process. I am disappointed that a number of our members chose to leave our club in its time of need. As I stated earlier, the assessment was required for the continued operation of the club, and its approval was not taken lightly by the BOG. Once again, thank you to all who stepped up to help.

On November 20th, at 3:00pm, I will be holding an “Ask the Commodore” session at the club. I encourage all members to come out and ask me whatever questions you may have about our club, or my plans for the coming year. The meeting will be informal, will begin promptly at 3pm and I will remain until the last question has been answered. This will be the first of several such sessions I hope to hold throughout the year.

Hope everyone is doing well with storage for your boats and your preparations for the winter weather. I recently saw a show about sailing and skiing in Iceland, and it sounded like an interesting winter vacation. Hmm.. might have to talk Karen into that one.

Our 82nd NERYC Annual Commodore’s Ball will be held November 5th. The event will start with the Change of Watch Ceremony, where we celebrate passing the baton from our 2011 Commodore Joe Reynolds to Commodore Elect Russ Zehnacker, and we welcome Board Members to their new position. We also have a few special celebrations at our Ball this year. We will be enjoying a outstanding dinner, and dancing to “The Majestics”, a band from Baltimore with a great reputation for keeping everyone moving & grooving. First Lady Karen and I hope that you have confirmed your attendance by now, and that you will be joining us. Given the state of the financials, please note that we have been prudent with the costs to hold this Ball, trimming costs where we can, with most of the decoration costs being fully absorbed by NERYC members... and we greatly appreciate our fellow NERYC Club Members who have contributed to the preparations of the Ball and those who have volunteered or agreed to help out at the Ball. For New Year’s Eve on Saturday, Dec. 31, we will be bringing in the New Year with a “Wild West” theme. It should be a “blast”. NERYC typically holds a New Year’s Eve party every two years, be sure to join us this year & mark your calendars. Let’s celebrate the New Year together as we look forward to positive momentum for our Club in 2012. Look for the event calendar in the Waterline and on the website: http://www.neryc.compagesNERYC_Calendar.htm Keep an eye on your e-mail for notification of upcoming club events. If you have a suggestion for an event, or want to help with an event, just let me know.

The only sailing event left for the NERYC racing community is the annual Sail Awards Dinner which will take place on Nov 12th. The Awards will cap off a wonderful season of racing, cruising, junior racing, summer sail camps, and trips down the bay for other race events. At this event we salute our winners, we recognize many well deserving members of our great sailing community for a wide range of great accomplishments and above all, we have a great time celebrating.

What a month October was for racing around North East and on the Upper Bay. Starting off with the Havre De Grace Regatta where Mike Wagner and crew on Solaris brought home a second place in PHRF C. Unfortunately the rest of the NERYC racers ran into various snags… some were a bit challenged by reading the course cor-rectly while the performance of others just didn’t leave up to expectations. Any way you look at it way though, it is always great just to be out racing. October also included the final 2 races of our Fall Series which solidified the season championships. Winners of the Fall Series were Dailey Tipton and crew on Blofish – Spin A, Greg Eckman and crew on Windsprint—Non Spin A and after a tie break was applied between Paul Russoniello and crew on Morphos and Bob Brechter and Crew on Tapestry for Non Spin B, Tapestry came out the winner. Congratulations to all. Be sure to be at the sail awards to find out who will get to take home our prestig-ious overall season championship trophies and individual awards for 2011. This year we also brought back an old favorite, the Inter Fleet Race, which stretched the season out late into Octo-ber. This race allows everyone to race against each other, regardless of class or rating, and usually has great winds. The 2011 Inter Fleet Champion, and also winner of the Charlestown Cup, was Mike Wagner and his crew on Solaris. Enjoy the photos of the event taken by Mark Hergan.

It is always a sad, but also a happy day when we close down another season of sailing and racing at NERYC. We started 7 months ago and filled just about every week with a sailing event, sail camp or race. The winter break will now afford us the chance to repair, or even upgrade, our sails, fix motors, improve the finish on our hulls and brush up on our tactics and rules, not to mention those other at home chores we have not had the time to get to. So to all you sailors, juniors and crew members, thanks for helping make 2011 another great season . I look forward to seeing you all at the Awards Dinner.

Our Condolences

We still have a few people who are considering membership at NERYC, especially since they have an interest in bringing boats to our docks for the coming year. I have made them aware of our slip and mooring policy and how space available is dependent on a first come first served policy after previous slip owners have signed up for their previous spaces. So, hopefully we will have a few more new members before the end of December. I would like to thank those members who have taken prospective members on tours of the club when I was not available and for those who have shown individuals who have appeared on the grounds unannounced. Those personal touches are very important to prospec-tive members. The club belongs to all of us. It was a pleasure being Membership Chair this year and serving on the Board. I have met many new people and we have 34 new members who have been great additions to the club. The Commodore’s Ball is November the 5th and I hope to see many of our new members there. When you see someone you don’t know, be sure to introduce yourself and make them feel welcome. The membership committee has worked hard this year. My thanks to Bill and Carolyn Doyle, John and Shirley Margan, Claire Brechter, and Mike Wagner and also thanks for all the help from Ron & Justine Roecker. April and the restaurant staff have been very helpful with our membership events as always. Again, thanks for all of your support. The Board of Governors will meet on November 6th to transfer duties to incoming members so this will be my last Waterline article. Look for Claudia Ferguson, our new Membership Chair, in the December Waterline.

Josie Dallas Membership Chair

As I my term on the Board of Governors comes to an end, I would like to thank the members for the support they have shown me over the last 4 years. During my first 2 years, many people assisted in my capacity as Building and Grounds Chair. From sewing the old awning together, to installing air conditioners, to doing odd maintenance jobs around the club, to coming out on work Day, I could not have done it without your assistance. Serving the last two years as Restaurant Chair, many people have voiced words of support, and I thank you all. That’s all from me and I look forward to seeing you at the club….. Yes I will still be around as a “worker bee”.
