President’s Report ~ August & September 2013This month has been very busy. Sensory Safari was a enormously successful and thanks to everyone who put so much of their time and effort into this event, from moving the animals and set up to being there to show and tell about the animals. This couldn’t happen without each of you.

We have also been busy with The Brooks Adaptive Shooting Sports Program. It has taken off and is in the budget for next year for Brooks Adaptive Sports Program. Since May, we’ve had a shooting event every month. Members from our chapter have given of their time to coach and help the disabled shooters, including Dr. Stan Longenecker, Robert Bracewell, Fitzhugh Powell, Derrell Griner, Betty Griner, David Griner, Stan Goeckel, Doug Speed, Jeff Boyd, Janet Pringle, and myself. The Jacksonville Skeet and Trap Club and Gander Mountain have also assisted. Past President Ray Pringle and Dr. Stan Longenecker worked many hours to convince Brooks Rehab representative Alice Krause to add shooting to their adaptive sports program. The next event will be held September 25th. Please call if you can assist.

I attended the national board meeting this past month and can report several hot items. The minimum donation to SCI Tuscon from our largest fundraiser was increased from $3000.00 to $5,000.00, or a club will not have a vote or a position on the board, making it hard for the smaller chapters around to have a say about issues that are just as important to them as it is to us. They also took up a collection to buy SCI CEO Phil Delone and his new wife a pair of shotguns so they can get involved in hunting.

Our Christmas Raffle is growing near and tickets are available. There will be some great prizes to be had, the main prize an engraved 100th anniversary colt .45 engraved with Safari Club International worth $3,500.00. This gun is beautifull! We will also have a really nice piece of jewelry, cash, a smaller pistol and lot’s of smaller prizes, so get em’ while there hot! You don’t want to miss out on this.

Hunting season is here in some areas, so I am looking forward to hearing some great stories of being in God’s country enjoying the great outdoors and harvesting some of Gods great creatures he has put on this planet.

I look forward to seeing all of you at our next member meeting and until then, God bless.

Shawn T. PringlePresident, North Florida Chapter Safari Club International, Inc.

Penninsula in Alaska. The first couple of days were perfect

blue bird weather with highs in the 60’s and lows in the upper 40’s. It finished with 80 knot

winds and 10-12 foot seas and the boat having to run for cover

on the leeward side of Cook Inlet. Two bears sighted with no opportunity to shoot. The

consolation prize was a few hours to fish with a mixed bag

of yellow eye, ling cod, and black bass.

Dear Sables, Sensory Safari with the help of so many dedicated SCI and Sables members was a spectacular end to the summer and beginning of a new school year. With fall and hopefully cooling temperatures not too far off it is time to turn our attention to Sables activities for the next several months. Our first set of plans involve a Sables Christmas party which we have traditionally held in one of our members homes. We are looking for someone to volunteer their home for this festive occasion. She who provides the home can be assured that the

attendees will each contribute canapés and other treats and Sables will provide the beverages. Our date has been confirmed for our 6th annual Tea With A Twist, which will be Saturday, April 5, from 1 until 3 PM at the Queens Harbour Yacht and Country Club. Safari Servers will return once again. Theme will be announced in next issue and tickets will be available soon. It is not too soon to be looking for suitable and quality items in our homes that could be donated for our March 1 Fundraiser. We would be happy to pick your contribution. With best regards,

Patricia Vane, Co-chairNFC/SCI Education Sables

GAC NOTES - AUGUST & SEPTEMBERby Terry Vane

Eco-Wackos Lose Another Round To Mother Nature. Last year it was the polar bear population studies that concluded that the population was not in fact declining but was increasing notwithstanding the high-pitched screeching of the chicken little’s at the Center for Biological Diversity whose endless litigation resulted in the eventual listing of the polar bear as “threatened”. The Big Zero unsuccessfully tried at CITES in March, 2013, over the objections of Canada to up-list the polar bear to “endangered.” This year it is the significant increase of the Arctic ice cap that was originally supposed to disappear in 2013, due to global warming, according to Al Gore and the know-nothing acolytes of the religion of global warming (now known as climate change). The Arctic ice cap has INCREASED by 60% in the last year, putting almost a million more square miles under ice and closing the northwest passage, stranding a number of vessels in the ice loaded with people who listened too credulously to that bloviating buffoon. Nevertheless, hunters will still be unable to import legally taken polar bear hides until Congress is able to correct the situation legislatively. The House acted last year as to bears taken before the “threatened” listing but the counterpart legislation died in the Senate, as would be expected as the Senate is presently configured.

Colorado Strikes a Blow For the Second Amendment. Earlier this year the Democrat controlled Colorado legislature passed restrictive gun control legislation which was enthusiastically signed by Democrat Governor John Hickenlooper. As a result, some irate citizens began a recall petition against the Democrat President of the Senate, John Morse, and State Senator Angela Giron. The recall election on Tuesday, September 10, 2013, resulted in both senators being removed from office and replaced by Republicans, a first for Colorado. This result was a shock to the gun-grabbers because both senators were originally elected in heavily Democrat districts, yet both lost, Morse by a small margin and Giron by a large one (twelve points), in districts carried by Obama in 2012 by twenty points. Nanny Bloomberg painted the districts with cash, outspending the opposition by five to ten times, depending upon who is asked, yet the anti’s came up short. A large majority of those voting in Giron’s district were Democrats, yet she still lost. The bad news is the state is still controlled by Democrats and the gun control laws are still in effect. As a result, the sheriffs of a majority of the counties in Colorado have filed suit challenging the constitutionality of the laws and a number of counties are threatening to secede from Colorado to form their own state. No wonder Harry Reid hates the Tea Party. On the other hand, the GOP elites were notably absent in this battle at the outset. Score a big win for self-government, the Tea Party and the NRA. As quoted in the New York Times, even former Governor Bill Ritter (D) was forced to admit “The Democrat Party cannot be the party of metro Denver and Boulder. It has to be the party who understands the values, views and aspirations of people who live outside of those areas.” A dose of reality the Demo-gogues are unlikely to swallow.

The Illinois Supreme Court Recognizes Gun Rights Extend Outside The Home. Aguilar vs. Illinois recognized that the two recent U.S. Supreme Court decisions (Heller and McDonald) “contain language strongly suggesting if not outright confirming that the Second Amendment right to keep and bear arms extends beyond the home.” The Court unanimously held in an opinion filed September 12, 2013, that the Illinois statute containing an outright ban

on carrying ready-to-use firearms outside the home was an unconstitutional infringement on Second Amendment guaranteed rights. Illinois became the last state to permit concealed carry when the legislature voted to override Democrat Governor Pat Quinn’s veto and adopted a restrictive concealed carry law on July 10, 2013.

California To Ban All Lead Ammunition. HSUS continues its campaign to end all hunting and fishing by degrees. Assembly Bill 711 was passed by the State Senate 27-15 on September 9, 2013, and will now go to the desk of Governor Jerry Brown (D). HSUS contends lead poisoning is a threat to wildlife. Alternative metals are very expensive and will likely double the price of ammunition, which is the goal of the anti’s.

Gun Maker PTR Industries Leaves Connecticut for South Carolina. The spate of anti-gun legislation recently enacted has resulted in this manufacturer taking its 120 jobs out of unfriendly Connecticut to Horry County, South Carolina. PTR signed a lease on their new site Tuesday, September 3, 2013. Stag Arms has also decided to leave the stifling atmosphere in Connecticut for either Texas or South Carolina, pending final negotiations in the next few weeks.

Connecticut Democrats Go After Starbucks. Starbuck policy is neutral on guns. If a state permits concealed carry, Starbucks permits it. Democrat U.S. Senators Blumenthal and Murphy and Democrat U.S. Representative Elizabeth Esty want Starbucks to change its policy which “undermines the safety and well-being of our citizens.” Starbucks rightly contends that legislators, not Starbucks, should determine restrictions on state-by-state gun possession.

EPA Jackboots Stomp on Alaska Gold Mine For Alleged Clean Water Act Violations. In late August, 2013, armed and body-armored EPA agents swarmed a gold mine near Chicken, Alaska, investigating an alleged violation of the Clean Water Act. No arrests were made nor citations issued. Alaska Governor Sean Parnell has ordered an investigation. The increased militarization of executive agencies in the Federal Government in general and the The Usurper’s administration in particular should be of concern to all of us. At one time not that long ago U.S. Marshals were used to enforce the law. Now virtually every agency has its own SWAT teams (yes, even the IRS). Why should that be necessary in a free society where the government is supposed to be “of the people, by the people and for the people”?

Quote of the Month“There are those in America today who have come to depend absolutely on government for their security. And when government fails they seek to rectify that failure in the form of granting government more power. So, as government has failed to control crime and violence with the means given it by the Constitution, they seek to give it more power at the expense of the Constitution. But in doing so, in their willingness to give up their arms in the name of safety, they are really giving up their protection from what has always been the chief source of despotism -- government.” ~ Ronald Reagan

William Hoover, second in command at BAT-FE, resigned on July 31, 2012, the same day Representative Darrell Issa (R-CA) and Senator Chuck Grassley (R-IA) issued a report identifying Hoover and four other BATFE officials as those responsible for the Fast and Furious scandal. All five had been previously reassigned within the BATFE and the Justice Department by Attorney General Eric Holder after the scandal broke. Two further reports are scheduled which will detail the “devastating failure of supervision and leadership” and “the unprecedented obstruction of the investigation by the highest levels of the Justice Department, including the Attorney General himself.”

The Religion of Climate Change (formerly named Global Warming) Takes Another Hit. Climate Change skeptic Anthony Watt and others have concluded in a new study that data compiled by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) is seriously inaccurate. The group studied a five-year period using new temperature collec-tion standards which “more accurately characterizes the quality of the location in terms of monitoring long-term spa-tially representative surface temperature trends.” The group concluded temperature trends reported by NOAA had been doubled as a result of erroneous upward adjustments of well-sited stations by NOAA. Half of the global warming trend reported from 1979-2008 was artificial, due to erroneous but deliberate adjustments by the NOAA.

US House Votes to Permit Importation of Legally Taken Polar Bears. The House voted 262-155 in April to allow importation of the bears legally taken in Canada before the polar bear was listed as endangered in 2008. Polar bear re-mains cannot be imported any longer since they have been listed as endangered. The bill will get nowhere in the Senate, however, until the Democrat Party is no longer in control of the chamber.

Firearms Industry Thrives Under Obama. The eco-nomic impact of the firearms industry went from 19 billion in 2008 to $31 billion in 2011, thanks to The Big Zero, with help from his friends in Congress. Background checks set records in 2010 and 2011. Proving that a rising tide lifts all boats, taxes paid by the industry rose by 66% and jobs increased by 30% during the first three years of the Obamanation, probably the only private industry showing real growth as a direct result of Obama policies.

Quote of the Month"We are a nation that has a government -- not the other way around. And this makes us special among the nations of the Earth. Our government has no power except that granted it by the people. It is time to check and reverse the growth of government which shows signs of having grown beyond the consent of the governed. ... Government can and must provide opportunity, not smother it; foster productivity, not stifle it." -- Ronald Reagan

Front Cover Photo: Derrell & David Griner with an Eland taken about 100 miles north of Windhoek, Namibia. This bull was taken after driving to the top of a mountain. We had been glassing the dry river bed below and spotted him with several other Eland. My PH said that the only way to get to them was to walk down the hill and up the side of another hill. After crawling about 100 yards on my hands and knees in a dry river bed, I got to a lone tree where I took the 100 yd. shot. The rest is history!
