Dear Editors,

FREE PLANTS

I have a small number of plants surplus to requirements. I will put them outside our house, Nether Hall (next to the church), on Saturday 5 September, weather permitting, so if anyone is interested they can help themselves.

Some of the plants available are:

A few small plants of Geum 'Bell Bank' which has coppery pink flowers in Spring. This vari-ety is not very widely available. Monty Don purchased one at this year's Malvern Spring Show and was shown the following week on Gardeners' World planting it.

Various rooted cuttings of scented-leaf Pelargoniums.

1 Chocolate Vine (Akebia quinata)

1 Bluebell Creeper (Sollya heterophylla)

Cuttings of foliage plant Melianthus major.

Seedlings of Aquilegia 'Yellow Queen'. The flowers of this Columbine have particularly long spurs.

Conservatory plants: Brugmansia 'Grand Marnier' (Angel Trumpets), Orchid (name un-known) which flowers for months in late winter and early spring with red/brown speckled flowers, Natal Lily (Clivia miniata)

Letters to the Editors...

Family Challenge 2015 Saturday 5th September

This year`s Family Challenge is now approaching fast. The preparations are well underway and with 18 teams having entered we are bound to have an exciting and enjoyable event. This is the largest entry that we have ever had and so there is no room for any additional teams this year.

It will be held centred as usual at the North Kilworth Sports Club, starting with registration at 0930 and ending with a BBQ on the sports field for all teams from mid afternoon. Presentations will be around 1730. There will be 13 challenges in the nearby countryside with a route of several miles. The challenges will be the usual mix of those that require brain power, muscles and a sense of humour.

We look forward to a great day.

The organizers - Colin Clarke, Mike Lawrence, Bruce Phillips, Simon Jones, Nick Otter, Duncan Moss, Mick Faulkner, Chris Mitchell and Manfred Morris.

History Corner

In the 1940's, I lived in Dairy Cottages which were built in 1927 for the workers of United Dairies. The Dairy was located by the train station where Ambassador Oil currently has their residence. My Dad drove the milk truck around the local area, collecting milk from the farms for processing at the Dairy ready to be sent to London on the trains. I used to walk to school every day, pop-ping back home from school for lunch. One day a week, we had to take a sack home and collect waste paper from the houses on Station Road on the way back to school and then take it to a shed at The Close. This was for the War effort. Whilst I was at Kilworth School in Church Street, there was a fire at Nether Hall (the beautiful large house on the left at the top of Church Street, the one with the elegantly tall chimneys, just by the entrance to the Church and directly opposite the school at that time) and all the children from the school were sent across to carry furniture onto the lawn. As we went to school one morning, the street was covered with incendiary bomb cases. Some of which were live! The children came into the school with them (no health and safety then). The planes had come from a raid on Coventry and unloaded them on the way back to Germany. A case of 50 had landed up Pincet Lane. The live ones were quite large, over a foot long and quite heavy. These were removed, but the empty case fins we used as flower vases by turning them upside down and painting them. The Public House at the canal was called The Wharf Inn with a Landlord called Charlie Woodhouse. Charlie was also the coal man delivering locally with his horse and cart. The coal came to The Wharf Inn by canal barge. In the 1940's I was sent to the canal with an old pram to get some coal slack as coal was in short supply. It cost a shilling for a pram full. The coal man would say "Go help yourself", so we would go and fill the pram with big lumps of coal, then cover it with slack and give him the shilling. As this was during the war time, we were very lucky to have a pub open! Although, there was no cold cellar, fridges or electricity, it was the only pub in the village with beer which came from the NBC Northampton brewery. At night, my friend’s Dad would send us across the road to The Wharf Inn with two screw top bottles to fetch two pints of beer and on the way back, we would have a drink. One night, the police stopped us and from then on, they made Charlie put sticky tape on the tops. We both lived in Dairy Cottages. In January 1947 Station Road was blocked for over a week by 8ft snow drifts. A gang of men from Husbands Bosworth and North Kilworth had to dig through it with shovels to clear the way. No diggers then. Sorry, no photos as we couldn't get films in the war. Peter Cook, Lavender Cottage, North Kilworth. Many thanks to Peter for this highly interesting history of the village. Are there any more stories you could let us have? We would love to hear them, maybe it's a childhood memory or a story from grandparents. Email Vikki at [email protected] or handwritten information can be posted through my letterbox at The Close, Green Lane Hill. Or, if you'd prefer, make me a cup of tea, tell me your story and I'll put it onto paper for you. My number is 881052. Vikki O'Hara

Superfast Broadband?

Superfast Broadband has been available in the village for some months now and I thought it would be interesting to see what experience people had and what speeds they were actually getting. A quick emailed survey provided the table shown. My thanks to all those who responded. Before you jump to lots of conclusions this is a very small sample and the speed data cannot be verified. However, I assume we are all honest and reasonably competent so it seems that there are some big differences in speed across the village. It would be really helpful to have some more data, if you have recently installed superfast broadband and want to contribute please get in touch with me ([email protected]) and let me have postcode, street name, ISP and down load and upload speeds and any other information you wish to share. Some of the high speeds in the table are because people have installed BT Infinity 2 which promises a significantly higher speed (64-80Mbps) they are getting better speeds BUT still below 64Mbps. BT infinity 1 customers were expecting speeds between 40 and 50 but most seem not have achieved these. Broadly speaking those closer to the green BT box opposite Rosedale (Millennium Close High St) appear to get higher speeds. South Kilworth Road is furthest away from the box and gets the worst speeds and the centre of the village shows a very mixed picture. There are two main comments in the responses :

speeds are intermittent they are worse in the evenings and there are periods of no service, this is a common complaint

and some people think it’s getting worse. ‘When BT Infinity first installed the speed was 33.5Mpbs but after the first few weeks this declined to the current level (23.75Mbps)’.

lots of people have speeds below and in some cases well below what they were offered and what they feel they are

paying for. ‘We are not getting the level of signal we were promised but it is a lot better (at a premium cost)’. Some additional comments suggest that

Customers who did not sign up for superfast broadband report experiencing a significantly worse service with even

lower speeds than before.

BT customer service is very helpful, much improved from previous experience although not always able to fix the

problem.

The online customer chat seems to work OK.

There are some simple things you can do to improve service – eg remove ASDL filters and connect the TV directly to the mo-dem. Perhaps we should have a broadband self help forum? I will continue to collect and collate any information and comments and publish an update in the next newsletter please get in touch with me especially if you have any useful tips on improving service. Sue Otter. AND what about the mobile phone signal..................a comment received by email. OFCOM are concerned that the national network coverage claims of the major phone suppliers are exaggerated and in some areas totally spurious. To enable them to gauge customer satisfaction they have issued a ‘coverage checker’ on their website (wwwofcom.org.uk). It would be a good idea to get others in the village to take part in this exercise!

Many thanks Sue, for this really informative article and some good suggestions. Some of us who live outside the village are even more behind in the broadband speed stakes! We would love to hear about mobile phone coverage as well. Are any networks better than others? Or is the centre of North Kilworth a ‘dead’ zone for all mobiles?

Page 6 NORTH KILWORTH NEWS

Just back from 2 separate weeks away with 5 small grandchildren… people ask if I have come back to work for a rest! Time out, in whatever way we take it, seems essential for our well-being. It might not be an expensive holiday, or even involving much travel, but most of us recognise the need for a break in some form or other. People who act as 24/7 carers for family members living with mental or physical disabilities, people whose day-to-day jobs involve high levels of stress…the list goes on… even a couple of days’ break can make a huge difference. In the first of the Creation accounts in Genesis, God

creates man and woman on the sixth day… then He took a break! These creation myths in Genesis are full of wonderful insights: notice in this first account that on the very first full day after being created, man and woman discover God is on a break. The day after that will be the start of their God-given duty to be fruitful and multiply etc., but for the moment, it’s time for a rest! These reflections are not a protest against so much that is in our modern culture, but how hard do we find it, when sup-posedly having a break, not to be checking emails and ‘just doing such-and-such while I think of it’? …. I know my own recent holidays featured some of that tension.

There is something in our culture which makes us think we need to be perpetually busy… more and more people feel uncomfortable with inactivity and even more with silence. Perhaps there is a need to rediscover a providential understanding of the Sabbath principle… that for our well-being, for us to be the kind of people God has created us to be, taking a break is not a social sin but the very oppo-site….God’s gift to us for our flourishing. If God can take a break, who are we to say we can manage without?!! Canon Chris Oxley

iCows?

I know we live in an electronic world these days but a recent visit to Buckwell Lodge really gave this a new meaning. We were all invited to a ‘Farm Walk’ by our local dairy farmer, Marcus Hunt.

Marcus runs the farm in partnership with his father David, and, being a family farm everyone is involved from Mum Daphne, wife Katrina, son Sam and daughter Georgie.

We were all amazed at the sight of the cows queuing up for the automatic milking machine that worked 24 hours a day, and allowed the herd to be milked whenever they felt ready. This not only freed up valuable time but also produced the happiest cows, as the photos show.

About 50% of the herd are served to Fleckvieh for herd replacements and after intro-ducing us to his wonderful beef herd of Belgian Blue’s, we set off on a tour of the farm and an introduction to Marcus’ innovative farming methods and practices. We discovered ways of planting seed to reduce carbon emissions, how mixing herbs such as Chicory, Yarrow and Birdsfoot Trefoil in with the grass seed gives the cows something more interesting and nourishing to eat, and that by planting clover it fixes nitrogen from the air and this supplies the fertilizer to help the grass grow.

Marcus describes his herd’s diet as ‘Cow Salad,’ as it helps keep them healthy in a natural way. He also told us that, ‘Its not only the cows which benefit from this, but at this time of year all these different plants are in flower and the fields are full of Bum-ble and Honey Bees. We are told that Farmers are causing the reduction of Bees, but I think they are all on holiday at Buckwell Lodge!’

Many thanks to Marcus and his family for sharing his time and enthusiasm with us, we’re looking forward to our next visit already!

You probably won’t need to say “Hello” to Elizabeth, because she is a very sociable lady and will probably say Hello to you first. When approached, she was slightly reluctant to feature, but said that she always enjoys reading the News and ‘Say Hello’ - and if people don’t get involved

there’d be nothing to enjoy!

Elizabeth came to NK two years ago, rented The Rectory, and believes that fate played a hand in her finishing up in Swallow Barn. By her own admission she found it very difficult to decide which was the right house for her. So, when Laura Spinner knocked on her door and said “We’re moving, do you want to buy our house?” her daughters chipped in with “You’re barking mad if you don’t buy that place” (they may have been influenced by the nice neighbours) so she made her mind up – and loves it!

Elizabeth was born in Edinburgh, of a Scottish mother, and moved to Leicestershire at the age of three. At 17 whilst at Lutterworth Grammar School she took a fancy to Peter, the art teacher (nothing untoward she says!). Six years later they were married, and lived happily in Welford for 32 years before Peter died 13 years ago. They thought Welford

was the most wonderfully self- contained village in which to live and bring up their family, with everything they needed in terms of facilities and friends.

A regular visitor to Gildings, Elizabeth used to buy and sell antiques – she loved the thrill of looking inside all the various boxes for that special piece and it gave her some pocket money!! Elizabeth worked in hotels before having children and then became a stay-at-home Mum (never underestimate that role!) bringing up her three daughters. – Margaret, Henrietta, and Georgina. Her four grandchildren are very important to Elizabeth – so although Jack, Isabella, Oscar, and Francesca are spread from Harboro’ to London and Hampshire she is regularly called upon to do her grandmother duties.

Now Elizabeth is set to enjoy NK. She enjoys “the hidden surprises of different houses, the streets, the Millenium Green, and the wonderful Bogs” as we come off the main road. She’s found everyone so friendly, gets involved in social events, and enjoys the church – her only regret is that such a beautiful building isn’t used more often.

A regular bridge player, a founder member of the Lutterworth Opera Group

which sadly no longer exists, she directed several productions for them and cur-rently sings tenor in a local choir. Elizabeth keeps busy – but there is plenty of time for her passions of gardening and flowers (she is a lapsed arranger of flowers for weddings). She is regularly seen getting her hands dirty on a garden project, and is never happier than when grubbing around to improve her two plots.

Liz and I have thoroughly en-joyed making friends with our new neighbour, and shared her impish sense of fun. Sadly for us, we have to leave her behind, but Elizabeth is firmly planted in NK and keen for you to say “Hello” to her whenever you have the chance.

Hundreds of visitors will once again be making their way to a tiny village in Northamptonshire – population 40 – for the Winwick Coun-try Church Fete and Family Dog Show. This year, the popular event takes place on Sunday September 6th, and the good news is, it looks like being the biggest since Winwick first started holding Fetes more than 70 years ago. Back in those days, in addition to stalls and attractions, the afternoon gave local children a rare opportunity to see a film, with straw bales to sit on, and the flickering screen projected onto a large white sheet. Fast forward 70 years, and the Fete’s nod to nostalgia is very much in evi-dence with visitors in 2015 having the opportunity view lots of stalls, take part in the famous Duck Race and a chance win a trip in a superb 1914 Vauxhall. There will even be a Coconut Shy, Birds of Prey, Songs of Praise in the Church, and the perennial fairground favourite - Human Fruit Ma-chine - which has been specially made for the day. In addition to more than 50 fabulous stalls, visitors will also be able to visit an exquisite Art Exhibition, watch Duck Races in the brook and take tea whilst Lutterworth Band plays in front of The Manor. Dogs are cordially invited to bring their owners along to the Family Dog Show, and with classes including Best Gun Dog and Best Terrier Type then some fun classes including Waggiest Tail and Most Appealing Eyes, there’s something for everyone. All entries for the Dog Show are on the day. With plenty of games for children, lots of free car parking, and toilets avail-able on site, the Winwick Country Church Fete and Family Dog Show once again promises a perfect afternoon out in glorious Northamptonshire coun-tryside. The fun starts at 2p.m. with the official opening. Everybody’s welcome! For further details: Sue Sherman 01788 510342 [email protected] http://www.winwick.eu/2.html NOTE: Our last Fete in 2013 attracted 2,500 people and we served 1750 teas with homemade cakes. Not bad for a tiny village!

The annual W.I. B.B.Q held on 15TH August at Orchard Farm by kind permission of Liz and David Ward, was again a huge success. The food was delicious, especially the salads made by our members and the weather was just right. Many thanks to all who helped to make it such an enjoyable occasion and we’ll see you all again next year. I joined Beavers when I was 6 and I am now in Cubs. The Kilworth Scout Hut is actually in Husbands Bosworth, by the park. Lots of people in the village help and it is really enjoyable. I particularly enjoyed making bird boxes, mine is now up in my Grandad's garden. We are very lucky to have a campsite in Ullesthorpe with log cabins and a camp-fire. I've been to the campsite once this year al-ready. The highlight was a giant waterslide the size of my house! I am looking forward to going back in September. When I was at Grandma's house I found one of my Daddy's scout annuals from 1982. Here is a butterfly puzzle from the annual. These are pictures of me (2014), Daddy (1984) and Grandad Peter (1953) and his dad, my Great Gran-

dad Ray (1913) as Cubs and scouts.

Hatha Yoga with Caron Lindley

You do not need to seek freedom in a different land, for it exists within your own body, heart, mind and soul – B.K.S Iyengar Our weekly Hatha Yoga classes will restart, after the summer break, on Monday 7th September, 5.45 – 7pm in the Village Hall. If you’ve been thinking about taking up yoga, perhaps for the first time or after a break, then Sep-tember is a good time to start. The class is taught by Caron Lindley of Red Hat Yoga. You can find out more about Caron by visiting her website www.redhatyoga.co.uk All ages, abilities, shapes and sizes are welcome to join the group. Many people worry that if they can’t touch their toes, then yoga isn’t for them. Flexibility comes over time and with regular practise. You simply start from where you are now and build from there. Caron explains, “As we age, the body starts to dry out - the process starts in our early twenties! Regular yoga practice helps to keep the joints mobile, the connective tissues pliable and the major muscle groups strong. It’s never too late to start or restart. And the body responds remarkably quickly.” Each class covers a range of postures, breathing practices, meditations and relaxation techniques. The emphasis is on getting to know your own body really well, exploring how you need to move and to use your breath, in order to release tension. You’ll also practise stilling the busy mind and relaxing mindfully. At the end of the class you will feel a deep sense of calm, lightness and freedom. Joining an established group might feel daunting, but please rest assured if you’d like to try the class, then you’ll be warmly welcomed. You can pay for a single class before committing to the term. Advance booking is essential as numbers are limited. Contact Caron on 01788 822975 for a chat. Or email Caron – [email protected] If this class is a little early for you, then Caron teaches at Lutterworth Town Hall, also on Mondays at 7.45 – 9pm, and at other times during the week in nearby Rugby and Crick. The full timetable is on the website.

The Harborough League season is now drawing to a close with the last league fixture scheduled for September 1st. Our last three fixtures are all away from home. We are currently in top spot in the Harborough League but have played one game more than Medbourne who are in second place. Additionally, as the evenings draw in, our last mid-week evening fixture against Bilton Bowls Club takes place at Bilton on August 19th. After that all the remaining friendly fixtures are Saturday afternoon games. We are always happy to see spectators supporting us so feel free if you wish to come and watch any matches. All the fixtures are on the Bowls Club website at http://northkilworth.bowls-club.co.uk/. One success also worthy of note is that NKBC came from behind in the annual two legged (home and away) fixture against South Kilworth Bowls Club to regain the Entwistle Cup. Trailing after the first away leg they stormed back in the home leg to win the match on overall aggregate. During the month Mark Westaway organised a charity barbecue at the club on Sunday 9th August in aid of Hope for Children. There was a good turnout for the event from which the takings will go to Hope for Children as sponsorship for Mark's trek up Kilimanjaro for which he leaves on 30th August. The club were pleased to be chosen as the venue for the final of the Sam Springer Cup which was contested between Kibworth and Fleckney on the evening of 14th August (the result was not avail-able when this newsletter was submitted). Club "roll-up nights" are held each Wednesday evening from 6pm. If you would like to try your hand at lawn bowls come along on a Wednesday evening where you will be made most welcome. All you need are some shoes with flat non-ridged soles. We can supply some bowls for you to use initially. Also don't forget the Clubhouse is available if you are planning any event and that there is a bar which can be opened if required. Speak to any Committee member if you have any plans afoot.

NK Floodlit Sports Committee needs new members

The current committee has decided to stand down at the end of March 2016 (details were given in the August newsletter), and would love to hear from anyone interested in taking over - not an onerous task- just helping the Parish Council maintain the all-weather courts and the children’s playground, and managing the membership of the courts. There’s plenty of scope too for organising some village events at the courts:- tennis tournaments, netball, 5 a side football etc. And also organising the annual Safari Supper, if there’s a will for it to continue. So please consider stepping out into the floodlights! Contact any of the committee: Dorothy Howie, Julie Fish, Sarah Holmes, Carolyn Sanders, Jane Faulkner, Sally Phillips, Manfred Morris or the Parish Council for more info And if you haven’t joined this year it’s not too late—membership gives you a key to the courts to use when-ever you wish. Contact Julie Fish (880304) to join And a date for your diary - the 2016 Safari Supper on 5

Cricket……..Ed Ward, the Wizard of Spin

Our second home game arrived on 5th July against Knossington, the side was complete, the weather was perfect and Knossington arrived looking forward to their first game in North Kilworth as we were looking forward to our next game. The ground looked fantastic and we had worked hard to get it ready for them, they won the toss and elected to bat and so the game began. NK bowled well restricting Knossigton with Joe & Huw Phillips opening the bowling once again with some devilish pace and each taking a well deserved wicket, Charlie Roberson then came on and with a good turn of pace kept the run rate down and kept up his high standards with a wicket from a ball getting up slightly coming off the thumb and a reaction catch caught behind the stumps. Joe Renshaw came on and with great accuracy continued to restrict the run rate and taking a wicket, NK’s spirits were high and with contributions from Tommy Renshaw, Adam Moss & Simon Sandercock once again taking a wicket as did Adam and all of them keeping on top of the Knossington batsman. As the batsman got comfortable on came Ed Ward, who with a magical arm and some wizard skittles the tail out with his first hat trick , what a way to finish the batsman off, restricting Knos-sington to 101 all out we left the field celebrating Ed’s fantastic achievement and proving we could bowl & field well with both Arthur Renshaw, & Scott Weston proving you can field with a pint in your hand. We went in for tea our spirits high, thank you to Sally Phillips & Jane Faulkner for the teas they were superb, the weather was starting to turn but in went Kilworth hoping to repeat the previous performance and hoping desperately not to have to rely on the Hardwick/Richardson method!! (our resident umpires Nick & Bristol Jerry). Our opening batsman went in Joe P & Joe R looking to capitalise on quick singles and build a strong foundation, they lasted at least 2 overs and then in true England style the col-lapse set in and despite the tail trying to wag with Oli Taylor then Simon Jones & Ed Ward bringing in the tail it was all over far too quickly, all out for 34!!! At least we avoided the Hardwick/Richardson method.. Our tails between our legs we headed off to the club house, the Knossington lads had enjoyed the fixture and keen to come back later we chatted and commiserated with a few beers but all in all a great day & another success in the start of cricket in the vil-lage. Thanks to the Sports Club for keeping the bar open & the use of the facilities, the spectators who turned up to support both old & new faces, Mick Faulkner our resident score board operator & groundsman not forgetting of course Nick & Bristol Jerry the umpires. We look ahead to our next game on 16th August and hope that those of you available will come and watch, not forgetting of course the finale Over 40’s vs Under 40’s details to get involved are available form Simon Jones on 07561 103386 or [email protected].

North Kilworth Rounders Team

Brilliant season for the North Kilworth Ladies Rounders Team - we played a total of 12 league games - winning 8 and losing 4, albeit 2 of them were very very close. We are expecting to come 2nd or 3rd in the table. All players played really well, and their ongoing commitment, enthusiasm and support is amazing and stands us in good stead to start next season....I know it's next year but we all know how time flies
