Mission Statement

The North Lake Tahoe Demonstration Garden's mission is to provide an educational resource to the Tahoe/Truckee Meadows community by creating demonstrations of lake-friendly landscaping using native and adaptive plants, water conservation, soil stabilization techniques, defensible space from wildfires, and Best Management Practices for storm water infiltration. The Garden collaborates with residents, community agencies, and private companies to teach building and landscaping practices which work in harmony with Tahoe's naturally beautiful but often fragile environment.1991- The idea for a community garden was born. Linda Pittman, who then worked for IVGID (Waste Not), managed to convince Waste Not and Sierra Nevada College to join her, Margaret Solomon and Dick Post (UNR Cooperative extension) in the venture.

1994-2002 - Regular free classes were held from June through August every year, many of which were hands-on style classes.

2002 - A new location for the garden was established at the Colleges Lake Campus. In the fall of 2002, most of the plant material was moved from the Mountain Campus to the Lake Campus. 2003 - The rest of the garden was moved, including the gazebo and the shed. Over the next growing seasons the new garden was established and many new demonstrations were constructed.

The Gazebo was established at the new campus.

2004 (BMP) Best Management Practices certification classes were held and the slope stabilization demonstrations were the lasting result in the garden.2005 - Regular free Green Thumb Thursday classes resumed in the garden. Over the next couple of years the garden established closer educational ties with SNC and UC Davis, especially after the opening of the Tahoe Center for Environmental Sciences building.

Numerous Educational Displays

The board of trustees look forward to the garden continuing to be an important part of the North Lake Tahoe communities and being able to foster environmentally responsible gardening practices in the area.

We have become more involved in community events, including Incline Village Red, White & Tahoe Blue July 4th activities.

We have collaborated with other groups in the basin working on environmental issues.UNR - University of Nevada, Reno. John Cobourn taught Best Management Practices classes to contractors and they helped build our slopes.

NLTFD - North Lake Tahoe Fire District helped with demonstrations on defensible space and fire safety.

MANA - Project MANA has demonstration vegetable garden boxes in the garden, grows veggies, and brings kindergartners to pick from the boxes and make salads every September.

Lake of The Sky Garden Club Their grants helped to build the pathway, install irrigation and to purchase plants.

NTCD Nevada Tahoe Conservation District helped with signage, printing, flyers, arranging classes, building demo slopes, digging holes and cementing posts for signs.

SNC Sierra Nevada College. Our garden is on their land, they supply our water and are a valuable resource for us.

UNCE- University of Nevada Reno Cooperative Extension has been an excellent resource for us. They have sent us volunteers to help in the garden and have provided educational materials.
