When North Mountain Middle School students and faculty step
into their gymnasium and multipurpose room, they see and feel a
great sense of school pride. North Mountain colors abound, and
a custom logo at midcourt lets any visitors know they’re in the
home of the Huskies. There’s assuredly a sense of pride for the San
Jacinto Unified School District (USD) as well, which assembled the
beautiful gym and multipurpose room by maximizing every dollar of
its flooring budget.
Situated 90 minutes east of Los Angeles, California, San Jacinto
USD selected Signature Flooring to design and provide floors to
meet its needs, while staying within a tight financial budget for the
new gym and multipurpose room. Signature Flooring suggested
using Standard Excelon® Imperial® Texture Vinyl Composition Tile
(VCT) and Striations BBT™ bio-flooring. Striations was selected
based on its striated visual, which resembles hardwood commonly
found on basketball courts. In addition to on-trend product visuals,
both VCT and BBT are sustainably crafted from 85% limestone for
superior durability and FloorScore® certified for low emissions,
contributing to a healthy school environment.
Project: North Mountain Middle School
Location: San Jacinto, California
Designer / Architect: Signature Flooring, Inc.
Armstrong Flooring: Striations BBT™ Bio-Flooring,
Standard Excelon® Imperial® Texture VCT
Featured skus: T3614, T3616, T3602 (Striations);
51824, 51941 (Excelon)
This combination is an ideal solution for schools aiming to achieve
sustainability goals while attaining a unique design.
Premium Excelon Feature Tile and Strip — in black, blue, and red
— provided distinguishing lines at the 3-point arc, baselines, and
painted keys, while the stand-out logo at midcourt was water-jet cut
and inlaid within the VCT and BBT design.
All of this custom design work fell within the flooring budget, and the
cost-effective VCT doubled as a durable option to allow the area to
function as both a gym and a multipurpose room, which includes
a stage. The installed version of this stylish and sustainable flooring
— including the custom logo and games lines — saved the school
district more than 50% compared to a quoted rubber sheet flooring.
“The school was able to save a lot of money in the material cost,
which was substantially less than other quotes,” said Mike Gray, a
sales representative and part owner of Signature Flooring. “California
schools are often on a tight budget, and this really gave the junior
high a lot of bang for their buck with what they got. They became
very interested when the midcourt logo fit into the budget, and when
North Mountain Middle School, Building Husky PrideCustom Gym Installation Earns Award for Most Maximized Budget
they learned that the game lines are part of the inlaid VCT. There
was no painting lines and maintenance that needed to be done, like
on a rubber floor.”
This magnificent work by Signature Flooring earned the company a
Spark Award for Most Maximized Budget from Fuse Alliance, and
recognized Signature Flooring’s ability to provide North Mountain
Middle School the best value for its budget. Fuse Alliance is a
member-owned organization of professional, commercial flooring
contractors. Annually, Fuse Alliance hands out its Spark Awards,
which celebrate design excellence in projects installed by network
members and represent outstanding craftsmanship, skill, and
expertise in the flooring industry.
“I’ve worked with Armstrong Flooring products my entire career,”
said Gray, who’s worked in the industry over 40 years. “Armstrong
Flooring consistently offers a great value for the price, and it’s a
quality product. We were able to give the customer a great floor
for their budget, and we’re proud we were able to maximize it in
that way.”
