There have been numerous close calls in recent weeks, especially on the District ofWest Vancouver’s Ballantree Trail, according to Barry Rueger, spokesman for the North Shore Professional Dogwalkers’ Alliance. “We tend to be up in that area a lot,” Rueger said. “The walkers have pretty much got it covered. They know what’s up. It’s just that over the holidays, there are likely to be a lot more of the general public hiking up there and taking their dogs up to go for walks. It’s probably good for them to know there might be an animal up there that could be a risk to them.” Stef Launay, a dog walker with Release the Hounds, has had two frightening encounters. When she caught up with the dog, she found a disturbing scene. “It was a fresh, huge, deer carcass — totally intact, its face and everything, except its whole middle was thrown open,” she said. The dogs however were more interested in rolling in a “stinky” white residue that had been sprayed in the area, similar to how cougars mark their territory, she noted. Then a week later, another incident. “Obviously the dogs noticed it first and they just started freaking out. driver who was allegedly impaired while taking his six-month-old infant and eight-year-old child to the airport.

But while police are making sure impaired driversdont stay behind the wheel, the volunteers at OperationRed Nose are doing their best to make sure impaireddrivers never get behind the wheel in the rst place.

The North Shore arm of the national volunteerorganization is currently looking for safe, sober drivers tohelp get inebriated people home on Dec. 31.

Were always short on NewYears Eve, noted JimGodey, co-ordinator for Operation Red Nose on theNorth Shore.

The organization probably needs about 30 volunteersto help bring in the new year, according to Godey.

The service is for anyone who feels they cant drivesafely, either due to alcohol consumption or fatigue.

    OperationRedNoseneedsvolunteers

Sightings not confirmedstarted screaming in themiddle of nowhere, shesaid.

At rst, she thought itmay have been a coyoteor something else butthen she heard a growlcome from the bush. Shequickly gathered the dogsand started heading backdown the trail but whatevermade the growl continuedfollowing them, growlingtwice more on the way.

    She later crossreferenced the sound

she heard with an audiorecording of a cougarsgrowl she found online.

I wanted to make sureI knew what it was and itwas exactly what a cougarsounds like: very, very low.Very cat-like, she said. Itwas pretty incredible, to behonest.

Rueger himself had asimilar experience recentlyas he was coming backdown the trail.

You hear it, followingalong beside you. In mycase it was uphill above usfor a good 20 minutes,

Rueger said. Basically, Igot all (the dogs) in quiteclose and we moved morequickly and made a heck ofa lot of noise.Thats prettymuch the limit to what youcan do.

Despite the worryingincidents, the provincesConservation OfcerService hasnt been able toconrm the cougars.

Weve had noconrmed kills or anyconrmed sightings ofcougars, said conservationofcer David Stanford. Its possible. I wouldnt

say there arent cougarsin the area because it is awildlife corridor. There arebears, cougars, coyotes, bobcats all that kind ofstuff.

Anyone who sees acougar or evidence of oneis encourage to call theprovinces hotline at 1-877-952-7277, Stanford said.

The district also asksanyone to report dangerouswildlife so staff can put upsigns, or even close trailsif necessary, according toWestVancouver spokesmanJeff McDonald.

Setting it straightA Dec. 19 article about the new mural on Low Level

Road incorrectly stated its length. In fact, the mural is130 metres long.

Operation Red Nose doesnt take reservations, nor dothey demand payment.

We are not able to turn anybody down for lack ofmoney, Godey says. If youve got no money left wellstill drive you and your car home.

The organization accepts donations, and any moneyraised by Operation Red Nose goes toward local youthprograms. Drivers looking to volunteer with OperationRed Nose can call 778-288-8996 or send an email [email protected].

PermanentrecordWhat do you get for someonewho doesnt understand thisnewfangled email thing?Apparently, the post of Minister of

Technology, Innovation and CitizensServices.Thats the job AmrikVirk was handed

after news broke that the former ministerof advanced education was involvedin a secretive pay scandal at KwantlenPolytechnic University. The former police inspector was part

of the Kwantlen board that sidesteppedprovincial rules in paying $120,000in moving and research expenses to avice-president who was already getting aceiling-hitting salary of $170,000.Virks perpetually hazy memory cleared

only after incriminating emails surfaced. Those emails stayed buried because

Virk claimed to be unable to access hisold account while co-operating with an

investigation into the affair. As you might expect, the NDP has

called forVirks resignation, and as youalso might expect, B.C.s silver medal partyis being ignored. The NDP doesnt knowhow to win elections but that doesnt meantheyre not right once in a while. In the big scheme of things, paying an

executive an extra $120,000 might not bethat bad, as long as youre not a Kwantlenstudent shelling out tuition money. Butthe Liberal governments decision to casta blind eye on the whole mess is galling, particularly for a party that tirelessly toutsits record on scal responsibility. As long as the Liberals are in power,

the future of our province hinges ontheir honesty and willingness to disclosepotentially embarrassing information. Its ne that Christy Clark rewards

loyalty, as long as she occasionallypenalizes incompetence as well.

Consider waste for a skunks sake

    Dear Editor:Our parents and

grandparents had theforesight to support theconstruction of a networkof hydroelectric dams thatnow supply us with someof the cleanest, lowest cost

electricity in the world. They electried B.C. and

positioned us nicely for theeconomic success we enjoytoday. Now its time for ourgeneration to add to thathydroelectric network andpay it forward by building

    the long planned Site Cdam.

Although Site C will notsupply all of the electricitywere going to need in thefuture, it will provide thenew rm energy supply thatwill allow us to maximize

the contributions fromother renewable energysources such as wind, solar, geothermal, and low-headhydro.With a little bit ofeffort and political will, B.C.could easily be 100 per centpowered by sustainable,

green, renewable energyand still have plenty leftover to share with othersnot so fortunate to have therenewable energy resourceswe have here in B.C.JessicaVerheydenNorthVancouver

Dear Editor:I am sure no one

purposely disposes of plasticcups and lids for cold drinksin such a manner that theycan harm skunks, but it doeshappen.

Skunks, like most wildlifein our backyards, have akeen sense of smell and likesweets as much as the personwho purchased the cold

drink. This results in themsticking their heads into thecontainers, which can end uparound their necks with nohope of easy removal.

We have seen two skunksin the last year runningthrough our yard with plasticaround their necks. The rstone was loose enough thatwith some ingenuity we wereable to hook the plastic, lift

the skunk up slightly and heslipped out free.

The second one, wecould tell, had the plasticembedded into its neck.Aftera trip toWildlife Rescue inBurnaby and numerousattempts to trap the skunkshould it return, we did trapand release an unhappy cat,and nally succeeded ingetting the one we wanted

with, thankfully, no spraying. We took her toWildlifeRescue in Burnaby whereshe was operated on, givenantibiotics, worried overbecause of a bone infection, and hopefully will recoverand be released back to thewilds of the North Shore.

This rescue associationis a phenomenal resource inMetroVancouver but sees

animals too often sufferingfrom a similar fate and not allwill survive.

So I ask you to thinktwice (about) how youdiscard these plastic cups andlids. Cut them up if you can, bring them home to recyclesecurely in your bins andsave a skunk.Thanks.Nick PetryszakNorthVancouver

Its that time of year whennight after night thereseems to be a movie onTV designed solely to getall of us crying our eyesout.

Theyre called classics fora reason. Its aWonderful Life,The Muppet Christmas Carol, and, of course,Corner Gas:The Movie.

Wait,Corner Gas?YeahCorner Gas.There were noChristmas ghosts or angelsin the movie spinoff of thefolksy Canadian sitcom(although, awesomely,a robot versus werewolfght), but CTV gave it aprimetime spot about aweek before Christmas, broadcasting it acrossCanada head-to-headagainst the big Christmasmovies.

The Corner Gasmoviedoesnt have anything todo with Christmas inkeeping with the sitcom, itdoesnt really have muchto do with anything butthat didnt prevent mefrom feeling some seasonalmistiness as I tuned in.

It wasnt the stirring,Jimmy Stewart-esqueperformance of showcreator Brent Butt that gotmy emotions running. Itwas, in fact, the openingcredits. As they rolled by,the camera cut to a series ofbeautiful aerial shots of thewide-open Prairies.

Power lines. Grainelevators. Small-towncrossroads. And whooo boy,the canola. Id deck the hallswith that yellow crap anyday.

By the time the littlemontage was nished Iwas swimming in a eld ofemotions. And no, I wasntdelirious or drunk.Well, maybe a little drunk itskind of a mandatory thing

    for watching Corner Gas.Pilsner, anyone?

Folks who didnt growup on the Prairies wontreally get this. (The grain-fed nostalgia, I mean, notthe Corner Gasmovie itself.Although city slickersprobably wont really getthat either.)

I grew up out there onthe atland, and seeingthose shots took me rightback to those wide and wildlands. Those images got methinking. I spent all of mychildhood Christmases inAlberta and Saskatchewan, and though Ive lived ontheWest Coast for 10 yearsnow, ve of them on theNorth Shore, I still feel thepull of the Prairie winter atChristmastime.

Now that I have kidsof my own Im torn evenmore. In the past wevetaken them on the oftentreacherous trip over themountains to visit family, but this year we stayed inNorthVan.My kids aregrowing up with traditionscompletely different thanmine.Theyre much morelikely to be holding anumbrella than a tobogganon Christmas morning.Theyre North Shorekids. And, the odd canolaashback aside, Im

    becoming a North Shorekid too.

There was one event, something that happenedthis year, that made mefeel more North Shorethan ever. I imagine manyothers feel the same way. Itwas the memorial forTimJones. I didnt think my thenthree-year-old son would beable to sit quietly for whatwas bound to be a longceremony, so I didnt bringhim along. But he neededto know what I was doingand where I was going. (Healways needs to know. Heslike a worrisome father andIm his teenaged son.)

I told him that we werecelebrating a strong manwho meant a lot to thiscommunity. I didnt knowjust how muchTim Jonesand North Shore Rescuemeant until I arrived atthe parade and saw thesidewalks of LonsdaleAvenue packed four or vedeep. As I later waited ina parking lot to watch theservice on a big screen, Ikept running into peopleI knew. Some, like me,were relative North Shorenewcomers, while othershad grown up withTimJones, played on the samehigh school football team. All of them made me feelwelcome.

It seemed like aquintessential NorthShore moment, minus theuncharacteristic sunshine. We all shielded our eyesfrom that sun when theNSR helicopter took off totake Jones up for one last

    trip into the North Shoremountains.

Back at my house myson, who is now four, hasa toy helicopter he loves.Last week just a day afterCorner Gas got my Prairieroots stirring my sonwas zooming his helicopteraround the house, rescuinghis toys from perilouspredicaments.

    Guess who I am, he

said. Tim Jones! My younger son, not

yet two years old, got anumbrella for Christmas. Hefreaking loves umbrellas. And the boys go absolutelycrazy for sushi. Notmuch call for sushi inSaskatchewan.

I guess old traditionsfade while new passionsstart to blaze. As we headtowards another new year,

heres hoping we can allremember where our rootsare planted while at thesame time look ahead tomountains waiting to beclimbed.

Aw heck, here I amgetting all mushy again.Toomany movies I guess.

Wheres the damnPilsner? Happy NewYear, and all the best in 2015.

    Neighbours continue long tradition

    CHRISTINE [email protected]

Few things in life arecertain, but the residentsof a NorthVancouvercul-de-sac know theycan count on a home-cooked meal, a tackygift exchange and good, neighbourly fun at theend of each December.

Saturday, Dec.20, marked the 25thconsecutive year thefamilies onTheta Courthave gathered for aprogressive Christmasdinner. The quiet street, tucked behind DorothyLynas elementary in DeepCove, is lined with just 16houses, most of them builtin the late 1980s.

ChristineThomasand her husband Johnmoved into their homein 1989. She recalls therst time she and her newneighbours met up for animpromptu Christmasparty.

We sat at the bottomof the street and had hotchocolate and a big bag of

pressies for the little oneson the street,Thomas says.

Ellen Muirhead andher husband Peter hadalso just moved in.Thecouple previously lived inan area ofWaterloo, Ont.,where all the homes hadidentical oor plans.Theresidents there would holdprogressive dinners, a styleof party that moves fromhouse to house over thecourse of the evening.

We just really likedthat idea and we came outhere and we didnt haveany immediate family outhere and so its just a reallynice way to connect withour neighbours, Muirheadsays. Everybody was reallykeen on it.

TheTheta Courtdinners started out asthree-house safaris:appetizers at one residence,a sit-down dinner at thesecond, and coffee, dessertand a cheesy gift exchangeat the third. For the lastdecade, though, the partieshave been scaled back:a buffet dinner at onehouse and an after-party at

another. But last Saturday,to mark a quarter centuryof keeping the traditionalive, the party onThetaCourt returned to a three-house affair, complete witha sit-down feast for anexpected 26 guests. Formerneighbours and grown-upchildren who have movedaway were also invited to

    drop in.Of the neighbourhood,

weve got 16 homes onTheta Court and theresstill 12 original familiesliving here, saysThomas, who quickly adds thatnew residents have alleagerly joined in the annualcelebration.

    There have been

countless memorablemoments over the years, like the time all thehusbands on the streetdecided to give their wivesa break from cookingand prepared salmonWellington.

It was fantastic,Thomas recalls, noting thatsame dish was on the menu

    this year too.Meanwhile, during

the hectic transition fromhouse to house, its notunusual for Christmasornaments and illuminatedlawn decorations to gomissing from oneresidence and mysteriouslyappear down the street lateron in the evening.

Asked what has kept thisChristmas tradition goingfor 25 years,Thomas saysshe and her neighbours justlike each others company.

Weve helped eachother out and always beenthere to watch out for ourkids as they grew up, shesays. Even so, we haventbeen on each others doorsteps all the time.Wereclose friends, but were notliving out of each otherspockets, she adds with alaugh.

ByThomass count,39 children have calledTheta Court home sincethe cul-de-sac was built, and while most of them aregrown up and moved out,she is buoyed by the recentarrival of a young familyacross the road from herwith three children underthe age of six.

Were starting againnow with the little ones onthe street, which is great.

Subsidies halted for housing co-opsMARIASPITALE-LEISKContributing writer

Many low-incomefamilies, seniors andpeople with disabilitiesliving in NorthVancouverhousing co-ops face anuncertain future.

Federal rent subsidiesfor 150 NorthVancouverhouseholds (and otherlow-income co-op membersacross the province) will endas early as 2021, accordingto the Co-operative HousingFederation of BritishColumbia.

The federation haslaunched itsYou Hold theKey campaign ahead of theexpiration of federal funding, asking its members to lobbythe provincial governmentfor a rent-geared-to-incomeprogram for low-income co-op households.

We are saying in ourcampaign that housing is aprovincial responsibility, said federationspokeswoman FionaJackson.

The federation estimatesit would cost the provinceapproximately $20 millionto fund a co-op rentsupplement program by2020, a gure the associationsaid pales in comparison tothe social and nancial costsof homelessness.

In November, membersfrom NorthVancouvers ninehousing co-ops, comprisingsome 465 households, metat the Mount Seymour ParkCo-op to learn more aboutthe imminent changes to therent subsidy program.

Each housing co-ophas its own 35-year federaloperating agreement, whichstarted the year it was built.

Six of the NorthVan co-opswill see those low-incomesubsidies expire in 2021.

Under the currentprogram, rent supplementcovers the differencebetween 30 per cent of aco-op members income andthe full rent charged to othermembers.

Our philosophy is thatsomeone shouldnt bepaying more than 30 percent of their income to puta roof over their head, saidJackson.

Monthly rent at theMount Seymour Park Co-op is approximately $750for a one-bedroom unit, and up to $1,178 for four

bedrooms. Co-op membersalso pay a one-time sharepurchase or membershipfee, which ranges from$1,500 to $3,000,depending on the size of theunit.

In April, City ofNorthVancouver councilunanimously supported thefederations low-incomehousing subsidy proposalto the province, passing aresolution that was in turnendorsed by the MetroVancouver board.

More information ontheYou Hold the Keycampaign is available on thefederations website at chf.bc.ca.

    Question:I know theres a

difference in wheel sizesbetween certain types ofmountain bikes and citybikes, but what do thedifferences mean and whyshould I care?

    Answer:First lets go over wheel

    sizes.Mountain bikes were

originally designed with 26-inch diameter wheels. Backin the 1980s the thinkingwas that to climb hills arider could transfer morepower per square inch to thewheel surface by reducingthe traditional bike rim size.In addition, the resultingshorter overall bike lengthwas more adept at clearingshort-turning radii.Theonly downside to this designis that it is less efcient onats. But then, it is calledmountain biking.

The standard for roadbikes is the larger 700cwheel size for exactlythe opposite reasons.Alonger overall bike lengthprovides stability at speedand the larger rim size incombination with gearingreduces the amount of effortfrom the rider to achievehigher speeds. The c in thissystem does not stand forcentimetres. It stands forsize c in an obsolete Frenchsystem in which a meantskinny, b meant not so

skinny and c meant wider. All Greek to most, I know.

A couple of new standardwheel sizes have emergedin the mountain bikemarket. The 29er and the650b (theres that Frenchagain). The 29er is just that a bike with 29-inch rims. These wheels are great atrolling over obstacles inenvironments where turning

radius is not such a hugeobstacle. They also providea higher bottom bracket, which means you dont hitthings as regularly. The effortto ride is similar to the 700cwheel size, but in the cushytwo-inch knobby tire format.Twenty-niners attemptto blend the efciency ofthe larger wheel size withthe general inefciency

of suspension. In someconditions, this works great and many people wouldargue that in cross-countryand all mountain situations, they are the bomb. However, downhillers might still prefer26-inch rims for their fast-twitch directional changecapabilities and because theyallow for forks with moretravel.

To confuse mattersfurther, bike designersrecently decided to split thedifference, creating the 650b a 27.5-inch wheel thatrolls better than the 26-inchrim, but reduces the turningradius of the 29er. Got it?

Hmmm. Why should youcare?Well, you might want

Recent and chronicsufferers alike oftenimagine the entire causeof their shoulder pain tobe excess joint strain, butthe true culprits are veryfrequently poor postureand a weak, unbalancedback.

Luckily, addressingthese triggers can helpkeep you head andshoulders above your pain.

Turn shoulders out moreand in less

Overuse of the armscan certainly causeproblems, but one ofthe most common little-known causes of shoulderpain is prolonged internalshoulder rotation. In

this posture the back isstretched while the chestis compressed, givingthe appearance of whatis often called slouching. Many hold their shouldersthis way when eating, driving or typing, and

several other commonactivities, like biking, golng and cooking, virtually require thisposture.

With so much timespent in internal rotation,it is little wonder shoulderpain is so common.

The primary antidote,of course, is externallyrotating the shoulderstoward a more neutralposition. To achieve thisposture, rst stand straightwith your arms hangingloose. Then rotate yourpalms outward so yourthumbs point away fromyour hips, while alsoallowing your chest to riseslightly.Your shouldersshould naturally move

into a healthier posture. You can use this trickthroughout the day toreset your shoulders andavoid excessive internalrotation.

    When in doubt, stretchthem out

Active stretching isanother key to undoingthe damage of sustainedinternal rotation.Thereare many great stretching-based tness programsavailable, includingyoga, pilates, and taichi, and each includesthe opening of the chestmuscles through shoulderextension.

Short on time?Thedoorway stretch is yourbest bet. Start by placingthe inner elbows atshoulder height on bothsides of a door. Next, move your chest forwardto the comfortable limitand hold for 15 seconds.

For an easier stretch, begin by placing yourpalms on the frame justbelow hip level instead.

Either way, the stretchis felt across the chestand shoulders and can be

performed two to threetimes per day, or evenonce every few hours.

Strong, balanced backstake load off shoulders

Increasing backstrength can also helpreduce shoulder pain. There are many greatback exercises to choosefrom, such as rows, band-resisted external rotationsand prone thumb raises, but each is too oftenperformed incorrectly totarget mainly the upperback. This can causemuscular imbalances thatcan actually increase yourshoulder pain.

To ensure propertargeting of the middleback, keep your shoulderslowered during all backexercises. The naturaltendency is to compensatefor a weaker middle backby shrugging the shouldersup, so you might need todecrease the resistancelevel to avoid doing this.

The holidays are in fullswing I hope yourturkey still tastes goodhere on Day 3.

Heres a tip: put gravyon everything. What othertime of year can you getaway with gravy wafes?Anyway, to help yousoak up that last little bitof holiday magic werepresenting Part 2 of ourthree-part North Shoresports year in review. In thisissue we look back at thetop moments from July toDecember. Dig in!

    JulyThose fancy mountains

weve got here on theNorth Shore arentthere just to look pretty theyre also there tobreed champions. NorthShore riders cleaned upat this years CanadianMountain Bike DownhillChampionships held at SunPeaks resort in July.

VaeaVerbeek of NorthVancouver led the way, winning a Canadian title inthe elite womens category.Other rst-place nishersincluded NorthVansDaniel Shaw, who won thejunior mens (U19) divisionand Michael Mooney, whotook top spot in the mastermens 50+ category. Silvermedals went to NorthVansColinYarrow in the mastermens 40-49 group andWestVancouvers HenryFitzpatrick in the cadetmens (U17) division, whileMartin Newman of NorthVancouver scored bronzein the master mens 40-49division.

    WestVancouvers Susan

Clarke can legitimatelyclaim to be the ttest 55-59-year-old woman in theworld after winning thatcategory at the CrossFitGames held in July inCarson City, Calif.

The annual competitionpits amateur athletes fromaround the globe againsteach other with participantsall completing the exactsame exercises in an effortto qualify for the big show. The competition at thisyears Games was heated literally.Temperaturesin California werepushing near 40 C on thecompetition eld.

The equipment wassmoking hot, said Clarke.I think everybody hasburns on their hands from

the pull-up bar. Literally itwas so hot that it blisteredour hands.

This was the 55-year-oldaudiologists rst trip to theGames. Clarke led a strongcontingent of North Shoremasters competitors at theevent, including DebbyBrouwer, who placed ninthin the same division thatClarke won as well asTerryPeters and Richard Rostonwho nished sixth andseventh, respectively, in themasters men 60+ division.

    AugustNorthVancouver

gymnast Scott Morganlanded on the podiumfour times at theCommonwealth Gamesin Glasgow this summer, claiming two golds, a silverand a bronze. The FlickaGymnastics Club memberwon gold on back-to-back days to nish off thegymnastics competition, rst winning on the ringsand then ying back tothe top of the standings invault.

It was spectacular toget up there on the podiumand hear the Canadiananthem, said Morgan. Its something you dreamabout as an athlete.

Morgans silver medalcame in the oor eventwhile his bronze came inthe team competition ashe helped lead the wayfor the Canadian men asthey nished third behindEngland and Scotland.

Morgan wasnt the onlyNorth Shore athlete to hitthe podium in Scotland.Swimmer Emily Overholt, then just 16-years-old,helped her team win silverin the 4x200-m freestylerelay.

    The North Shore

Twins came about as closeas you can to winning achampionship in Augustwithout actually scoring thecoveted gold medals.

TheTwins fought theirway to the nal of the B.C.Premier Baseball Leaguechampionship tournamentinWhalley where they fellin extra innings to the No.1-ranked Langley Blaze.

Trailing 2-1 and downto their nal out in the

top of the seventh, theTwins rallied with SuryaViswanathan starting thingsoff with a single and thenscoring on the very nextpitch whenTaylorWrightripped a clutch double.

TheTwins then seemeddestined for the win afterscoring in the top of theninth, but Langley loadedthe bases in the bottom ofthe ninth and then won iton a two-run double fromDakota Currey.

Tears was all I hadleft after yesterday,Viswanathan tweeted

following the game. Weshowed what it means to beNorth ShoreTwins . . . wewent out as lions.

    Marcos Baghdatis

won his second OdlumBrownVanOpen tennistournament in August, showing off his strongdefensive game andsumptuous drop shots tobeat Farrukh Dustov ofUzbekistan 7-6 (6), 6-3 inthe nal.

The Cypriot, whohas beaten the sportsbest in his long career,

rst won theVanOpen in2009. Injuries droppedhis ranking in 2014 so heneeded to pick up somepoints at smaller events, buthe also had fond memoriesof 2009 in his mind whenhe decided to come backto the Hollyburn CountryClub hosted event.

Keffer helped Canada scorea thrilling 17-16 win overthe four-time defendingchamps from the UnitedStates to claim gold at theWorld Junior UltimateChampionships held inItaly in August.

In the nal the underdogCanadians took a slim leadand held it throughout thecontest. The Americans, however, eventually tiedthe game 16-16 forcinguniverse point (thatsultimates exciting way ofsaying next point wins).

And then, just like that,it was over one quickthrow and then a long

bomb to Canadas DarrenWu who soared above twoU.S. defenders to grab thewinning point.

You could hear thecrowd go crazy overhis catch, said Keffer. Its kind of surreal.Themoment that we won wasone of the best momentsof my life. And then after, thinking about it, its asurreal feeling were thebest team in that age groupin the world.

    It was an early Sunday

morning in August but thecrowd that packed into theCapilano Rugby Club, 140strong, was red up to seesomeWorld Cup history.

Three of their own Andrea Burk, Hilary Leithand Mandy Marchak were in the starting lineupas Canada was taking onEngland in the nal of theWomens RugbyWorldCup. Canada started outwell, taking it to Englandin the rst 10 minutes ofthe game. The tide soonturned, however, as theexperienced and hungryEnglish they lost in thenal of the past threeWorldCups slowly pulledaway, building an 11-0 leadin the rst half. Canadafought back to make itclose before a fast andbruising run from Emily

Scarratt a dominantplayer throughout thegame sealed the win forEngland and ended thegreatestWorld Cup run inCanadian rugby historyone step short of theultimate prize.

The party inside theCapilano club mellowed asthe clock ticked down tothe nal whistle but oncethe game was over, all thatwas left was an enormousamount of pride for theplayers and team.

For us its justoverwhelming to getthose three on the team, said club president KenRobinson. That wasabsolutely spectacular. Iknow full well how muchwork theyve had to put in.

fourth quarter, scoringtheir nal major in the lastminute of play to make it49-48. Handsworth electedto go for the win with atwo-point convert ratherthan kicking for a tie, andtheir bid for the end zonefell short.

Carson ended up goingthe furthest of all the NorthShore senior football teamsthis season, winning theiropening round playoffgame before losing toMission, the eventualsilver medalists, in thequarternals.

    North Shore/Burnaby-

based Mountain UnitedFootball Club scored theirrst ever Canadian SoccerAssociation National ClubChampionships medal inOctober and it came from asurprising source.

The clubs U17boys won bronze at anational tournament theywerent even supposedto be at: the U-18 CupheldThanksgiving longweekend in Surrey. The team, comprisedcompletely of underageplayers for the U18division, was given a lateinvite to the tournamentafter Newfoundland andLabrador dropped out.

The Mountain squadmore than held its ownagainst older teams, blasting its way into themedal round and securingbronze with a penaltyshootout win over Albertaafter a 0-0 tie in the third-place match.

NorthVancouversDzenan Bezdrobscored ve goals in thetournament, earning ashare of the Golden Bootaward.

    NovemberThe NorthVan

Wolf Pack racked up anincredible 17-game winstreak that spanned allof October and most ofNovember. The run for thePJHL junior B team startedwith an 8-1 win over PortMoody Oct. 1 and didntend until a 4-1 loss toRichmond Nov. 29.

It was just gettingeverybody to buy in, headcoach Matt Samson saidabout the streak. We havegood players theyrehighly skilled and can getus out of trouble. But Ithink now weve just beenworking on really getting

into our system, focusingon the details of the gamewhether its our neutralzone play, our defensivezone, our gap control, our face-off play. Its littlethings like that, and thengetting everyone excited toknow that we have a shotat winning it this year andmaking sure that guys arehaving fun when they cometo the rink every day andknow that weve got to keeppushing ourselves.

Heading into the holidaybreak the Pack sported a24-4-0-2 record, sitting twopoints behind Richmondfor top spot in the leaguewhile having played threefewer games.

    The incredible,

improbable run of theSutherland Sabres seniorboys soccer team cameto an end in Novemberwith a 3-0 loss to SurreysPanorama Ridge in theprovincial AAA nal atBurnaby Lake SportsComplexWest.
