Rethink on appeal of conditions for new runway is urgedPat O’Rourke
COnCERns have been raised regarding the Dublin Airport Authority’s
(daa) decision to seek an amendment to the conditions from An Bord pleanála to secure unrestricted use of a second runway at the airport.
However, the daa have argued that the “severely” restrictive conditions would result in the loss of approximately three million passengers from the day the new runway opens.
Dublin Fingal TD Darragh O’Brien (FF) has urged the daa to rethink appealing the An Bord Pleanála conditions.
“On Monday (July 11), I was happy to meet with the Dublin Airport Authority, together with colleagues from the
Oireachtas, and members of community groups representing Portmarnock, Malahide and Swords,” he said.
“Feedback from the residents of St Margaret’s and The Ward was also raised.
“It was an important opportunity to engage with the various stakeholders and interests associated with these plans.”
Two of the conditions laid down by An Bord Pleanála when planning permission for the second runway was granted in 2007, stipulated that the total number of nighttime flights could not exceed 65 between 11pm and 7am once the new runway is built; and take-off and landing times were to be restricted between 7am and 11pm.

Help end senseless deathsTony McCullagh
DUBLIN City Council is asking the public to give their views on the proposed
expansion of the 30km/hr speed limit zones in certain residential areas.
As part of its review, the council is proposing to continue its rollout of 30km/hr speed zones, which were first introduced to Dublin in 2005 with a further expansion in 2010, by the adoption of the Special Speed Limit Bye-Laws 2016. A public consultation process is now underway and will run until August 24 and the public are invited to view the proposed bye-laws and make submissions.
The council is also looking for feedback in relation to identifying possible additional roads and streets for the next phases of the proposal.
Currently, there is a 30km/hr speed limit in the city centre in Dublin 1, Dublin 2, Marino in Dublin 3 and Irishtown and Ballsbridge in Dublin 4.
According to Roseanne Brennan, founder of Jake’s Legacy, Ireland as a nation needs to stand up and accept that speed is a huge problem in road
safety. Her son was tragically killed after being hit by a car close to his home.
“We need to act now for prevention of more senseless deaths,” she said.
“We ask you to support Dublin City Council’s proposal to reduce the speed limit from 50km/hrs to 30km/hrs in residential areas. It adds a little time to your journey, but trust me, that’s a lot better than a life sentence of knowing you took an innocent life.”
According to Ciarán Cuffe, chairperson of the Transportation Strategic Policy Committee on Dublin City Council, speed is a major contributory factor in road deaths in the Republic of Ireland. The north inner city councillor said that 21 per cent of all road deaths every year are caused by excessive speed, with 54 per cent of those fatalities being pedestrians.
“London has already introduced 20mph speed limits in wide areas and Edinburgh has begun to roll out 20mph speed limits this summer to cover 80 per cent of the city,” Cllr Cuffe said. “A number of other European cities are progressing to introduce speed limits similar to our 30km/hr proposal, such as Paris, Lyon, Manchester and many cities and towns in

Switzerland and Spain. “Lower speed limits save lives
and improve the quality of life in our cities.”
Declan Wallace, Director of Traffic for Dublin City Council,
added: “The overriding principle that must inform any decision to change a default speed limit should be road safety.
“In addition, to be effective, a speed limit should be self-
enforcing and regarded as appropriate by road users and should not be imposed on a road unless there is a clear justification for doing so.
“By self-enforcing we mean

that the road layout and the behaviour or mindset of motorists must complement each other and support any introduction of a revised speed limit, such as additional 30km/hr speed zones.”All details, including how to make submissions, are available at www.dublincity.ie/speedreview

a reality check when it published its latest back-to-school costs for 2016. If you haven’t already seen the eye-water-ing figures, you might want to sit down before reading this.
School associated costs have in-creased year on year since 2012, with the overall spend for primary pupils now averaging €967 annually per child. Not surprisingly, the spend per second-ary school students is even higher at €1,474 per child.
The survey found that back-to-school spending negatively impacts 26 per cent of bill payments, with 13 per cent of parents saying they will have to sac-rifice on food to cover these costs.
The main costs are the old reliables such as uniforms - €145 per primary school child and €234 per secondary school student. This year, 60 per cent of parents say they will shop online for back-to-school items – up significantly from 47 per cent last year.
When you add in lunches, art materi-als, school tours, transport and extra-curricular activities, you quickly see where the rising costs are occurring. Then, of course, there’s the so-called voluntary contribution, where parents are expected to pick up the State fund-ing shortfall which makes something of a mockery of the notion of free education.
The credit union survey found that 79 per cent of parents expect to make a voluntary contribution to a school, averaging €118 per child.
Many parents find themselves in debt to cover school costs, with 31 per cent borrowing an average of €357. And

Comment: Tony McCullagh, Dublin People group editor
Whatever happened to free education?
WHILE it was only a few weeks ago, it somehow seems like an eternity since our children said
farewell to another school term and the entire summer stretched out before them.
If you’ve already responded to the daily chorus of “I’m bored” or “what are we doing today?” by sending your little darlings off packing to expensive summer camps, you might want to think again before parting with your cash.
Last week, the Irish League of Credit Unions gave the parents of the nation

despite all the talk about the Govern-ment helping low-income families, the survey revealed that only 14 per cent of parents eligible for back-to-school allowance believe the payment is suf-ficient to cover costs.
The majority of parents will always
prioritise their children’s education and wellbeing but this can create financial pressure points in other aspects of their daily lives. Another reason, perhaps, why property tax, USC and water charges were too bitter a pill to swallow.

Deputy O’Brien is “concerned” that the daa now intends to enter a process to address these two conditions.
“I would like to make clear that I do not support the daa in their decision to appeal and am therefore, calling on the daa to reconsider their application to achieve unrestricted use of the North Runway,” he said.
“Since 2004, I have consistently supported the development of the airport. The airport is a major employer in North Dublin and the new runway has the capacity to create thousands of additional jobs, which I welcome.
“This project will allow the airport to grow for the benefit of the Irish economy by supporting additional trade, tourism and foreign direct investment in Ireland.”
Deputy O’Brien said he fully supports the development and expansion of the North Runway.
“However, the very genuine and serious concerns of residents must be taken into account,” he added.
A spokeswoman for the daa said that as part of its ongoing community engagement programme they are very aware of local concerns.
“We are committed to addressing those concerns through a comprehensive range of sound mitigation measures,” she told Northside People.
Rethink on daa’s appeal of conditions for runway is urged
Dublin Fingal TD Darragh O’Brien (FF)▪
“It is important to note that the planning conditions that would apply after the North Runway becomes operational would result in less capacity at key times with two runways, than is presently available on the existing Southern runway.
“This would be the equivalent of adding a new lane to the M50 and then closing two lanes at key travel times.
“daa has a responsibility to seek an independent review of these two severely restrictive conditions that would result in the loss of about three million passengers approximately from the day the new runway opens.”
The spokeswoman added: “This in turn will stymie employment opportunities as well as future growth at Dublin Airport which is a major gateway for tourism and trade.”
This project will allow the airport to grow for the benefit of the Irish
economy by supporting additional trade, tourism and foreign direct investment in Ireland
Fingal is fastest growing county
to support a significant and rapid increase in our population.”
Mr Reid said the council is ac-tively supporting economic de-velopment in the county.
“There are three elements to our approach,” he said. “We sup-port the county’s SMEs through our Local Enterprise Office; we’re working to support our indig-enous companies, such as in the agri-food sector; and we work with others to attract multi-na-tional industries to the county.
“With its young, well-educated and expanding population, Fingal has the potential to increase its share of such investment and to be further seen as an attractive location for business to invest.”
Mr Reid added: “We very much see the CSO figures as a positive for the long-term economic well-being of the county.”
Mayor of Fingal, Cllr Darragh Butler, said the increased popu-lation figures demonstrate the attractiveness of Fingal on many different levels.
“As a council, we will be doing everything we can to ensure that it continues to be the best place to live, to raise a family, to work in, to do business in and to visit,” he said.
“We will also be working to ensure the delivery of major infrastructure projects such as Metro North in order to cater for the needs of our growing popula-tion.”
Fingal also contains four of the fastest growing electoral di-visions in the State (Blanchard-stown-Blakestown, The Ward, Balbriggan Rural and Blanchard-stown-Abbotstown) with growth rates of up to 27.4 per cent.
The CSO report also shows that Fingal has the second lowest va-cancy rate in the State, with a 19 per cent reduction in the number of vacant dwellings since 2011.
That’s according to Fingal County Council chief executive Paul Reid.
Mr Reid was speaking after results, announced last week, showed that Fingal is Ireland’s fastest growing county having seen its population grow by 8.1 per cent in the last five years.
Its population now stands at 296,214, an increase of 22,223 since 2011. It has almost doubled in the past 25 years, rising from 152,766 in 1991 to 296,214 in 2016.
This 8.1 per cent increase is the highest of any county or city in the last five years and is over twice the national rate of increase. The population comprises 145,209
males and 151,005 females.Mr Reid said: “The figures re-
leased by the CSO present both a challenge and an opportunity to Fingal.
“Fingal County Council has been planning on the basis of similar population projections. We are currently in the middle of the review of our County De-velopment Plan 2017-2023 which will provide a framework for the development of the county and its population in the medium-term.
“However, what the census fig-ures do indicate is the need for sustained investment in our pub-lic services, such as transport, schools and other infrastructure
THE preliminary results from the 2016 Census present both a challenge and an opportunity for Fingal.

Irish Water is splashing out on some new local projects
being finalised and is expected to go to tender later in the year. The works are likely to take 21 months to complete.
Meanwhile, the company has put in a compulsory purchase order for land to build a new wastewater pumping station in Skerries. The €5.1 million project is planned for the Rush Road in Skerries.
The station will aim to reduce overflows to the sea during peri-ods of heavy rain. In June, Fingal County Council issued a no bath-ing warning for Skerries south beach, Rush north beach and Loughshinny beach.
Swimming was prohibited as a result of water contamination which was understood to be from a waste water treatment plant.
Construction for the new sta-tion is expected to begin in March 2017 and will take 18 months to complete.
An additional €9.7 million will also be spent on upgrad-ing wastewater management in Rush. These works will aim to stop the discharge of untreated sewage in Rush.
And in a further investment for Fingal, Irish Water have sub-mitted a planning application to build a €2 million reservoir north of Seamount Heights in Malahide.
One of the projects will replace a water main which is notorious for bursting and causing re-oc-curring traffic disruption and wa-ter shortages in Swords.
The water-governing body will spend around €8 million replac-ing the water main. The project is estimated to save 44 million litres of water per month.
The water main will be re-placed from the junction near Cooks Road and Forest Road, down through Swords Main Street and North Street and on to the Jordanstown Reservoir.

Jobs boost as Coolock warms to Iceland store FOOD retailer Iceland opened the doors to its newest store in Dublin last week.
The new store at Northside Shopping Centre in Coolock is the 12th in Ireland for the re-tailer.
The new store follows the opening of another new store in Clonmel last month.
The two new store openings have created a total of 55 jobs, bringing the number of staff in
Iceland Ireland to 250 across 12 stores, which is a great boost to the country’s retail industry.
Northside specifically sees 35 new jobs for the Coolock area, and is a welcome addition to one of North Dublin’s longest es-tablished shopping centres, as well as being the second Iceland store in the area.
Eddie O’Sullivan, Store Man-ager of Iceland Northside Shop-ping Centre, said: “I’m delighted to see another store open in Dublin for Iceland, as we contin-ue to expand our offering across Ireland.
“We look forward to welcom-ing new customers from across Coolock and North Dublin.”

Airport records busiest ever dayDUBLIN Airport had the busi-est day in its 76-year history on June 24 when more than 100,000 passengers trav-elled through the airport.
This is equal to almost twice the capacity of the Aviva Sta-dium or more than the popula-tions of 11 Irish counties.
Dublin Airport managing di-rector Vincent Harrison said: “We have welcomed 17 new routes and services this year and another two long haul routes will be launched in Sep-tember.
“Every single week since May 15 has been busier than our busiest week in 2015. And this will also be the case for every week right though to early Oc-
The project will boost water stor-age facilities for Malahide and Portmarnock.
The existing reservoir serving the area is insufficient to cater to the growing population in the area, according to Irish Water.
Should planning permission be granted and land acquired, the construction is expected to begin in 2017 and will take approxi-mately a year to complete.
Dublin Fingal TD Alan Farrell (FG) welcomed the investments.
“I recently raised the issue of water quality in the north county, and the need for investment in our local wastewater infrastruc-ture, in Dáil Éireann,” he said.
“With a growing population in Dublin Fingal, continued invest-ment in this infrastructure is vi-tal.
“While I am pleased with the confirmation of this investment by Irish Water, I will actively en-gage with Minister Coveney and his Department (of the Environ-ment) to prevent any delays in the delivery of this essential infrastructure for our local com-munity.”
Irish Water has been dogged by controversy since its launch and the company experienced a huge decline in compliance in its latest billing cycle.

lin Airport Authority (daa) is continuing to invest in new fa-cilities and services to enhance
the passenger experience for all customers. “We are cur-rently investing €10 million to upgrade the arrivals area in Terminal 1,” he added.

City councillor looks forward to Mayor roleJack O’Toole
Councillor Brendan Carr who was elected as new Lord Mayor of Dublin last month is looking forward to using his new role to help tackle some of the city’s most
pressing problems.
Carr replaces outgoing Mayor, Críona Ní Dhálaigh, and while he’s complimentary of the Sinn Fein councillor’s term in the Mansion House, there are a few issues the city’s new first citizen feels the council can improve on.
“The biggest issue for all of us at the moment is the homelessness and housing crisis,” Carr told Northside People.
“That has to be addressed and we have spoken twice now to Minister for the Environment, Simon Coveney. We’re the largest housing authority in the country. That is out primary function, to try and get people housed and kept safe.
“But when we try to do something we seem to have to get the Department of Environment to ensure it falls in line with them, and that’s causing delays. It’s frustrating and the issue is nearly being used as a football.
“I’m trying to get the Minister to say ‘Look, you look after it, you deal with it and the buck stops with you. We’ll give you the important financial mechanisms, providing you can justify it, and you go ahead and fix the problem.’”
Also high up on the new Mayor’s agenda is mak-ing Dublin a ‘Living Wage City’. Carr would like to see the majority of businesses in the city agree to pay workers a minimum living wage of €11.50 per hour and if they agreed to subscribe to revamped
pay structures, he believes the Dublin economy and local businesses would both benefit as a result.
“I want to make Dublin a Living Wage City as they’ve done in London and other cities around Europe,” Carr added.
“We’ve made some progress and we’ve a meet-ing next Wednesday in which we’re bringing in the Dublin Chamber of Commerce and Congress [Trade Union]. The Living Wage generates more money and people who earn more money, spend more money. They spend it more openly and everything grows as a result. That’s a big initiative for us.”
The new mayor also wants see the introduction of a one per cent bed tax on visitors using hotels, more funding for arts projects around the city and a plan to re-integrate criminals looking to break away from a life of crime.
Carr points to a re-integration initiative in Los Angeles where a re-integration program had a 93 per cent success rate, and he believes the same progress can be made in Dublin.
The former trade union official has a lot he wants to achieve in a very short period of time, but insists that it’s advice that was once given to him by his late mother that inspires him to be so ambitious.
“My mam passed away last year and it kind of hit us all a little hard; it wasn’t something we were expecting but my mam always said to me ‘no matter how well you do, if someone needs help you shouldn’t be happy.’
“No matter what the situation is, if someone is less fortunate than you, you shouldn’t be happy.”
They’re words to live by for Carr, and a motto he will undoubtedly look to stick by during his reign as the 347th Lord Mayor of Dublin.

Swimmers row in for big sea challenge
proved particularly difficult. “The tide was emptying out of
Skerries when one would expect a more welcoming flow for the effort that had been expended in getting to this point,” said Fer-gal. And so, the trio moved along steadily. In the final kilometre they received the welcome sur-prise of meeting Kevin O’Sullivan
and Pat Brown, two regular ‘Sker-ries Frosties’ swimmers.
Both swimmers took the weary trio around the dangerous rocks which protect the entry to Sker-ries Harbour.
This was Ken McCarthy’s lon-gest ever-solo row and similarly, it was Fergal’s longest ever swim in Ireland. Both still had the en-
That was the challenge prolific sea swimmer Fergal Somerville set himself on July 8.
However, the Beaumont native wasn’t alone for his latest chal-lenge. His teammate at Eastern Bay Swim Team, Ken McCarthy, rowed alongside him in a currach that he made himself.
And Vanessa Daws, an Eng-lish Channel relay swimmer and current member of Eastern Bay Swim Team, supported the men with fuel breaks and navigation.
At 7.15am, the trio set off from Howth and wearily arrived in Skerries at 1.27pm after complet-ing the 25km journey. The swim/row took six hours and 12 min-utes, a phenomenal 4km plus per hour pace. According to Fergal, this is the first time the Howth to Skerries swim has been done.
“The route was planned metic-ulously by Ken, whose knowledge of tides and flows in the bay is unrivalled,” said Fergal.
“A currach sits on top of the water and moves to the oars-man’s commands in the same way an orchestra follows the con-ductor. “A swimmer’s position is predominantly underwater
and the body is pushed through the brine.” Every 45 minutes the swim/row duo stopped momen-tarily to fuel up on sports drinks and the occasional chocolate bar or banana.
The trio rounded the islands outside Skerries just before 1pm and from there could see the town. The last two kilometres

ergy at the end to applaud the support of Vanessa as command-er in chief. All three enjoyed the plaudits of the welcoming com-mittee in Skerries led by Michael Gartland, veteran of a number of marathon swims, and Connie Dottino, another renowned swim-mer, kayaker and triathlete.
After confirming successful
completion to the coastguard, lifeboats and harbour masters, the trio packed and headed back to Howth, this time by road! “Maybe, there’ll be a return later in the summer to do the swim/row in the opposite direction,” added Fergal, who swam the Eng-lish and North Channels in 2011 and 2013 respectively.

Northside brothers surviving with new comedy showDaniel O’Connor
TWO Portmar-nock brothers have created a must-see play for both Irish visitors and tourists.
P e r f o r m e d daily at the International Bar on Wick-low Street, the comic sketch show - ‘Ireland: A Survivor’s Guide’ - both e n t e r t a i n s and informs as it offers “a rollercoaster guide” to Irish culture and customs.
Seán and Niall Mac-
Donagh both began their careers as actors before setting up the High Rock Production theatre company in 2011.
They quickly became known for their show, ‘Caith Amach É’, a production performed in Irish for school children studying for the Irish oral exam.
Sean MacDonagh told North-side People how their experi-ence of these shows helped them transition to performing in their latest play.
“If you can perform in Irish to schoolkids of 18 and 19, who come in believing they’re gonna hate the show and make them laugh in the end, going into au-diences of adults in English is grand,” he says.
The duo began looking for work in the summer while they weren’t performing in schools, which lead to the inception of ‘Ireland: A Survivor’s Guide’.
Featuring sketches such as ‘A History of Ireland in seven min-utes’ and an interactive hurling
match, Sean feels that the show is able to give a true sense of Ire-land to tourists.
“If you visit Ireland for two weeks, you might go on a bus and see the Cliffs of Moher or Riverdance but would you really get a sense of the Irish people and the craic?
“If you visit Ireland you should get a sense of that, so we decid-ed that we could give people that in an hour,” says Sean.
Since beginning their resi-dency at the International Bar in June, the MacDonaghs have had to get used to running and promoting shows as well as just performing.
With shows running five times a week, the comedians have be-come used to the challenges that come with getting people in the door, especially when catering to tourists.
“Starting a show is something entirely different to just acting,” adds Sean.
“We had to learn that and
learn there’s a lot of work that goes into it.
“With tourists, you are literally up against Guinness. You’re try-ing to get people to skip that and come to your show.”
The MacDonaghs’ unique brand of physical comedy, as well as the always exciting nature of Irish life and culture has resulted
in overwhelmingly positive feed-back from those who have seen the show.
The show will continue to run throughout the summer in the International Bar from Tuesday to Saturday at 1pm. For more information, visit www.irelan-dasurvivorsguide.com

New dog-friendly café unleashed at ArdgillanA NEW café that will give people the opportunity to dine with their dogs in the stunning surrounds of Ardgillan Castle and Demesne has opened.
Paws at Ardgillan is one of the first in Ireland and is certainly the first feature of its kind in a munici-pal park in the country.
The dog walking fraternity is a huge demographic that has tra-ditionally been badly catered for when it comes to eating out in Ire-land. The first ever dog-friendly café opened its doors recently in Dublin, ‘Pupp’ on Clanbrassil Street.
Dog owners are universally frus-trated by the fact that they cannot bring their dogs into a food prem-ises. Often they have to either leave them at home or tie them up out-side, neither of which are accept-able solutions.
This refreshing new initiative means that after a walk in Ardgil-lan, dog walkers can sit with their dogs at a café table and partake in either hot or cold light food and re-freshments.
There are just three conditions attached to the new initiative: the dog owners must clean up any ac-cidents, all dogs are kept on a leash and owners with persistently noisy dogs will be politely asked to leave.
Property Manager at Ardgillan Castle, Tom Reilly, said: “Since I took up the position of manager, I have always been conscious of the fact that dog walkers are prevented from having their dogs alongside them when they visit our Tea Rooms, or indeed any café I know of.
“We have innumerable local peo-ple walking dogs from morning to night in the park.
“We often get asked if we are go-ing to do anything about dogs and as a dog owner myself, I fully appre-ciate the dilemma.
“So we identified the former gardener’s cottage on the demesne, overlooking the Rose Garden, as the perfect location for a dog friendly café.”
Mr Reilly added: “Obviously two-legged customers without dogs are also welcome to Paws at Ardgil-lan.”

Swords local is rocking her way to Vegas
trip to the Rock ‘n’ Roll Las Ve-gas Marathon & ½ Marathon in November, the world’s largest night-time running event which takes place on the Las Vegas Strip at night.
All six finalists represented a broad array of the running com-munity with their personal sto-ries of perseverance, motivation and inspiration.
Each finalist will receive two complimentary entries into this year’s Affidea Rock ‘n’ Roll Dublin Half Marathon which has expand-ed into an action-packed festival of running with an all-new 10k and Saturday 5k race added.
The popular race will start in Dublin’s Docklands and finish in the Phoenix Park on a new date of August 7.
Suzanne said: “I am so over-whelmed to be announced as the first Rock ‘n’ Run Idol.
“I would like to extend a mas-sive thanks to all my family, friends and everyone else who
voted for. Join me on August 7 to take part in the Affidea Rock ‘n’ Roll Dublin Half Marathon.”
The contest was judged by sports personality Anna Geary, editor of Irish Runner Frank Gre-ally, running coach Ash Senyk and two time Rock ‘n’ Roll Dublin
champion Lizzie Lee, who is cur-rently training for the 2016 Rio Olympics.
Stacey Campbell of the Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon Series said: “We are so thrilled to announce Suzanne as Ireland’s first Rock ‘n’ Run Idol.
“All our finalists have been in-credible to work with and should be so proud of their achieve-ments. “They are all winners in our eyes and we can’t wait to wel-come them and thousands more to the Affidea Rock ‘n’ Roll Dublin Half Marathon in August.”
Suzanne Alcock-Thompson, from Swords, was announced as the first Rock ‘n’ Run Idol by the organisers of the Affidea Rock ‘n’ Roll Dublin Half Marathon.
The inspirational mum-of-two fought off competition from five other finalists in a public vote to become Ireland’s first Rock ‘n’ Run Idol.
Suzanne, who is currently training to take part in the Af-fidea Rock ‘n’ Roll Dublin Half Marathon in August, will be re-warded with a trip to Las Vegas to take part in the Rock ‘n’ Roll Las Vegas Marathon and Half Marathon.
Suzanne started running in 2012. However, she felt so em-barrassed of her ability that she would only run when it was dark
at night and wear her husband’s woolly golf hat so no one would notice her.
To gain confidence and reach her goal of completing a 5k, Su-zanne decided to start a group called Sloggers to Joggers. Hav-ing started with five ladies the group now boasts 250 active run-ning members.
After taking part in the Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon Series in Dublin and Liverpool over the last few years, Suzanne wanted a new goal to achieve and decided to enter the Rock ‘n’ Run Idol com-petition. An expert panel of judg-es could not ignore the incredible achievements of the Sloggers to Joggers founder and announced her as a finalist in March.
Over the past few months an astonishing 15,642 votes were made by the public for their fa-vourite idol on runrocknroll.com/dublin/rock-idol/.
As part of her prize, Suzanne will receive a once in a lifetime

There are numerous other sports clubs in the area, all pro-viding an excellent service and
each possessing a band of vol-unteers who contribute so much without seeking financial gain.
Sport in the Swords area has never been stronger.
Soccer clubs like Swords Celtic, Swords Rovers, Swords Manor FC and Rivervalley Rangers, to name but a few, have been nurturing the tal-ents of underage players for many years.
And in Fingallians GAA Club, based at Lawless Memorial Park and St Finian’s in River-valley, Swords has two great clubs to be really proud of.
Week in and week out, men-tors, trainers and coaches provide a fantastic outlet for young people in the area. Paul Flynn, Fingallians’ biggest star, picked up a another All-Ireland winners’ medal back in September when he played a vital part in Dublin’s march towards its third Sam Maguire triumph in five years.
Flynn’s success has provided a great fillip for the club who will hope to produce many more stars for the Dublin team in future years. Boxing, athlet-ics and golf are also among the popular sports available to children and adults alike.

The centre attracts over 200,000 visitors each week and has over 2,000 parking spaces.
The last few years will go down as one of the most turbulent peri-ods in our history given our eco-nomic woes and the situation we found ourselves in after years of living it up while the Celtic Tiger strutted across our communities.
However, there are promis-ing signs that we have turned the corner and the recovery has
started. Unemployment is drop-ping every month, and is now at its lowest level in eight years.
Last week, Northside People reported how the unemployment rate fell from 9.4 per cent in June 2015 to 7.8 per cent in June 2016.
Despite this positive news, complacency will be the last word you’ll hear from the mouths of lo-cal business owners.
Businesses in Swords and all across the Northside were badly hit in the recession and the route back to anything resembling nor-mality will be an arduous one to
say the least. Therefore, business communities especially are still in need of our support, and there has never been a more important time to back our local traders and play our part in keeping employ-ment levels up in our areas.
Swords is one of those areas that has always strived to offer its citizens the very best in local services.
It has always been renowned as a close-knit area providing a huge range of shops, local ser-vices, schools, sports clubs and recreational outlets.
From humble beginnings, Swords has grown along with the population explosion and this growth has been more than matched by local businesses that have stepped up to the mark.
There is everything you need in the area with local businesses al-ways willing to welcome you with a friendly smile, as well as that all important quality service.
In a lot of cases, those serving us from behind the counters are our neighbours, which is another incentive to shop local during these still challenging times.
Simply put: Swords is a shop-per’s paradise for locals and visitors alike. This bustling town continues to experience huge growth in quality retail outlets and services.
Developments that have had a positive impact on the rapidly expanding area include the Pa-vilions Shopping Centre and the Airside Retail and Airside Enter-prise Parks.
Other areas also providing ex-cellent services include Swords Main Street and Plaza Shopping Centre, Applewood Village, the
Boroimhe Shopping Centre and Metro Point Business Park.
The Pavilions Shopping Centre in particular, has been a phe-nomenal success since it opened in the heart of Swords and is a magnet for shoppers seven days a week.
Since its acquisition in 2006 by commercial property developer Chartered Land, Swords Pavil-ions has become one of Dublin’s most successful shopping cen-tres. Located adjacent to the M1 at Swords, the centre comprises over 85 stores, is anchored by

Volunteers needed for Swords Castle projectWANT to try your hand at archaeology? Season two of the Swords Castle Digging History-Community Archaeology Proj-ect is taking place from August 19 to September 5.
The project, funded by Fingal County Council and the Heritage Council, allows members of the public to take part in a real archaeological dig, and to help answer unanswered questions about the national monument.
Christine Baker, Fingal Community Archaeologist, said: “Swords Castle is one of the best surviving examples of an archbishop’s residence in the country, and was an important administrative centre.
“We’re looking for volunteers (18 and over) to join us for this excavation. No experience is necessary, and we have a number of roles for those who aren’t up to digging.
“This season, we hope to find out if there is a graveyard underneath the castle, if there were buildings within the castle yard, and just how old the different buildings in the complex are. “Volunteers will have a front row seat as we focus on the history and geology of the stones, and investigate the works carried out in the 1970s.” To book your place on the project email [email protected] To follow the progress, like the Swords Castle Digging History Facebook page, and follow them at @fingalher-itage on Twitter.

25 things you’ll remember about growing up in SwordsLorraine Murphy
SWORDS is one of the largest suburban areas in the coun-try, having experienced a huge population growth in recent years. No longer just a rural village in North County Dublin, the Fingal capital now feels like a city in its own right.
Its proximity to Dublin Airport has made it one of the most sig-nificant commuter hubs in the capital - even though it doesn’t even have its own rail service. But with its modern shopping centre, pubs and restaurants, the lively town has become a lot more self-sufficient in recent years.
Here are a few things you might remember if you grew up in Swords.
1. Hanging around outside the Amusements, known as the ‘Mu-sees’, and watching the really cool ones going in.
2. Drinking down the Jacko,
“where everyone knows your name”.
3. The Central disco upstairs and sitting on the covered pool tables.
4. The Big Tree - where the old style (but sounder) Swords people drank.
5. Making up dances with your friends for Fingallian’s disco and wearing your shades even though it was dark.
6. Going into town on a Satur-day with £20 to buy an outfit for that night.
7. The Lord Mayor’s disco bar where getting in was a weekly roulette, no matter your age or proof of ID.
8. Falling over the steps of the Acorn Shop.
9. JC’s Supermarket and him giving us a laugh with his funny intercom chat. The offers - when they’re gone, there’s more!
10. Michael Savage’s super-market in the Main Street - small-er and more expensive… but very
handy.11. Taking a walk with your fella
to the Corn Field, now Highfields. You knew what that meant.
12. The Scout Den disco - where the cool kids smoked their brains out upstairs and the lesser mor-tals danced in a circle looking moody.
13. Jets. Need I say more?14. The Jets bus. Last chance
saloon.15. The last 41c home on a Sat-
urday night. The boogie bus.16. Clarke’s shop - if they didn’t
sell it, it didn’t exist.17. Being excited when the
Omni Centre opened in Santry as it meant only having to spend an hour on the bus.
18. Crying when another tour-ist delayed the bus going through the airport.
19. Who’s Eddie? playing the Harp on a Monday night.
20. The hollow at the back of the School House - when you couldn’t be bothered to make the
journey to the Jacko.21. The shoe mender’s – it’s
still there!22. When after the pub you had
two options - go to the Roxy for chips or pay a fortune for a taxi
to Tamango or Jets.23. Ordering red lemonade in
The Lord Mayor’s on a Sunday night because you wanted to see someone and had spent all your money on Saturday.
24. Ryan’s – where you tried to talk nice grownups into buying you cans of Tennants.
25. Summer projects that took us to exotic places like Clara Lara and the zoo.

Swords star Catherine is all set for Rio
the squad boosted by two after last week’s news which follows on from the recent Team Ireland announcement at City Hall.
Chef de Mission for the Irish Team, Denis Toomey, said: “We are delighted to welcome tri-athlon onto Team Ireland for the 2016 Games.
“Ireland will now be repre-sented by 46 athletes across 10 different sports, and as Chef de Mission, I certainly look forward to leading them all to Rio for the games.” Team leader and tech-nical director for the Para-Tri-athlon team, Eamonn Tilley, said success comes with hard work, dedication, passion and team work. “Catherine and Fran have achieved so much in a short
space of time,” said Mr Tilley. “We at Triathlon Ireland are
delighted with the news and it was always our aim to get a Para-triathlete to Rio.
“I am very happy to be in-volved with such a strong team and I relish the opportunity to work with all of my fellow col-leagues and team leaders in the weeks and months leading up to the Paralympic Games.”
The first wave of athletes will
depart for Brazil on August 23, and will use the Irish Holding Camp in Uberlandia, Brazil to prepare for the Games, which has been set up with the gener-ous support of Sport Ireland.
Walsh has competed in a range of events spanning two decades – her first Paralympics was in 1992.
She is one of Ireland’s few world champions, having won the 3km tandem bike pursuit
gold in Los Angeles. She has overcome her severe visual im-pairment to be one of the na-tion’s most prolific athletes.
Walsh’s exploits at the Para-lympic Games in London in 2012 were recognised in her home town when she received a Civic Honour from Fingal County Council.
The award was in recognition of her achievements where she won silver and bronze medals.
The duo will compete in the PT5 event in Para-triathlon. They will be Ireland’s first ever para-triathletes to attend a Paralym-pic Games as the sport makes its debut in Rio in September.
Speaking following the an-nouncement, Walsh, who will be representing Ireland for the sev-enth time at a Paralympic Games, said: “We are absolutely delight-ed to be given this opportunity to represent Ireland once more at a Paralympic Games.
“It is fantastic to see that in the first year of Para Triathlon at
the games, there will be Irish tri-athletes representing their coun-try at Rio.
“We have been working hard all year to get a qualification slot for Rio. To be told that our hard work has now paid off and that I will be representing my country again for the seventh time at a Paralympic Games is fantastic.”
Walsh added: “I look forward to becoming part of a great team of 44 other Paralympic athletes – it’s a fantastic feeling.”
Ireland will have a team of 46 athletes at this year’s games, with
PARA-TRIATHLETE Catherine Walsh, from Swords, and her pilot, Fran Meehan, have been confirmed for the Irish team taking part in the 2016 Paralympic Games in Rio this year.

However, thanks to excellent work carried out by Fingal County Council and Fingal Tourism, it is now one of the area’s biggest at-tractions.
The council has been in-volved in a major restoration programme of the castle for a number of years and deserves immense credit for this work.
The castle was originally the residence of the Archbishops of Dublin around the year 1200.
It provides a snapshot of what 15th century life would have been like and comprises a gatehouse, apartments for knights, a chapel, banqueting hall, Archbishops apartment and two large towers.

While the castle provides a vital link with Swords’ past, the town’s most important modern building is Fingal County Hall.
This stunning building opened at the beginning of the noughties and in terms of providing servic-es has made a huge difference to the lives of local people.
The multi-million pound proj-ect was the culmination of a six-year dream since the old Dublin County Council was split into four new local authorities.

Key decisions are made ev-ery day in this, the hub of Fingal County Council’s administrative area, and there’s no doubt that it has made a difference in the lives of local residents.

BOOK OF THE WEEK: ‘Sisters Against the Empire’
IT IS April 1916. In London, Eva Gore-Booth is shocked to read a newspaper report that her sister Constance has been
found dead on a Dublin street. She discovers her sister is alive, but condemned to death. Meanwhile, in Kilmain-ham Gaol, Constance hears the firing squads shooting her closest friends.
Eva comes to Dublin on a troopship to find her sister grieving over the execution of James Connolly. Her death sentence has been commuted to life imprison-ment. The next 12 months will stretch Eva’s physical and mental powers to the limit. She becomes Constance’s ally and closest confidant; her go-between and connection with the Gore-Booth family. She fears solitary confinement will drive her sister in-sane and persuades her to sketch and draw in prison.
The Gore-Booth family are divided between conflicting loyalties. Sir Josslyn Gore-Booth supports the British in the Great War, but begins to sort out Constance’s finances. He writes endless letters to uncover the truth behind the rumours she shot a policeman.
From her cell Constance at-tempts to create a revolutionary network. The authorities fear a break-out and move her to Ayles-bury Women’s Prison.
Eva campaigns on behalf of her sister and
Irish prisoners in England and fights against conscrip-tion and the death penalty.
Constance struggles against the
attempts of the authori-ties to crush her spirit. The
prison rations weaken her health and she suffers periods of illness and depression. During a dark season of the soul she finds an outlet in a remarkable series of drawings and sketches in her prison journals, reproduced in ‘Sis-ters against the Empire’ for the first time.
The book draws on new sources to show how two girls, both beautiful, one a gazelle, defied the might of an empire at war. This is history with the attention to detail and vivid characterisa-tion told with the intensity of a novel.
PATRICK Quigley is a retired of-ficial from Fingal County Coun-cil. He is the author of a novel, ‘Borderland’ (1994), which was broadcast on RTÉ as a drama.
He has written two books of pop-ular history – ‘The Polish Irishman: The Life and Times of Count Casimir Markievicz’ (2012) and ‘Sisters Against the Empire, Countess Constance Markievicz and Eva Gore-Booth in 1916/17’ (2016), both from the Liffey Press. He taught creative writing in Coolmine Community School and has lectured in UCC, the Hugh Lane Gallery, the National Gallery, Warsaw University and in Ukraine. The Polish Govern-ment awarded him a Pro Memoria medal for ‘The Polish Irishman’ in 2014. He is Honorary Treasurer of the Irish Polish Society and gives lectures based on his books. In May of this year he delivered a 1916 com-memoration lecture on Countess Markievicz in Kyiv University.

One Dubliner’s tales of warWhen he was just eight-years-old, Paddy Rochford enrolled at Dublin’s Royal Hibernian Military School, where he was taught how to be a soldier with the British Army, like his father.
Soon afterwards, in 1922, he and his fellow pupils were evacuated from Ireland, a land torn apart by civil war.
Across the sea in England, Paddy joined the Third Battalion of the Coldstream Guards as a drummer boy, with postings to Windsor Castle, Buck-ingham Palace, the Bank of England and the Tower of London, where he guarded the Royal Family and Britain’s treasures.
In the 1930s, as thousands of Jewish families fled Nazi Germany, Paddy was sent to Jerusalem, charged with keep-ing the peace between the local Arabs and the Jewish immigrants.
During the Second World War, he was part of the Western Desert Campaign in Egypt, defending British territories.
After numerous wartime adventures, the young sergeant went on to train the Egyptian Army, where a bond of friend-ship grew between him and the future
president, Colonel Nasser.Learning Nasser’s plans to oust
the British from Egypt, Paddy tried in vain to warn his superiors prior to the bloody revolution of 1952, which signalled the end of British supremacy in the Middle East.
Paddy retired from the army soon afterwards, moving his young family to Yorkshire, where he began writing his enthralling memoirs about a young boy who spent a lifetime growing into his boots.
Caroline Rochford, the wife of Paddy’s grandson, is a Yorkshire-born author, having written ‘Great Victorian Inventions’ (2014) and ‘Great Victorian Dis-coveries’ (2015), both published by Amberley.
She and her historian husband, Michael J Rochford, are directors of the genealogy company Heir Line Ltd (www.heir-line.co.uk).

the benefits of a vegetarian dietKarla Bohan
THERE are many different rea-sons people might opt for a vegetarian diet- a temporary fad, spiritual tradition, health decision, or a concern for ani-mal welfare. Regardless of the reason, millions of people worldwide now call themselves vegetarian, and their bodies are reaping the rewards.
A vegetarian is defined as someone who does not eat ani-mal flesh or meat. When com-pared to people who do consume meat, vegetarians take in far less saturated fats and foods which negatively impact cholesterol levels.
Therefore, the risk of heart disease is lower, and they enjoy a higher life expectancy as a re-sult.
In addition, because vegetar-ians generally have a lower body fat percentage, they are at a much lower risk of developing diabetes.
Plant-based diets tend to be high in Vitamin C, folic acid, fi-ber, magnesium and potassium, which are nutrients protective against cancer.
In particular, the consumption of fruits and vegetables reduces the risk of developing certain types of cancers such as colon, ovarian, breast, liver and pros-tate.
Vegetarian diets have long been criticised for being too low in protein. Even though meat is a good source of this macronu-trient, there is a wide variety of foods which can meet a person’s protein requirements. These foods include: beans, lentils, quinoa, buckwheat, nuts, seeds,

Good news for apprehensive dental patientsMANY people would like to have implants but are apprehensive about the surgical procedure involved.
This is a shame because it is definitely the ultimate procedure available for not only replacing missing teeth but for also retaining the jawbone and therefore the shape of one’s face.
They are, of course, through the various clip-on systems, invaluable for securely retaining dentures and make loose lower dentures a thing of the past.
The good news for those apprehensive patients who may be a little squeamish about the surgery involved is that a new modality for the
Memory Invasive Implantation Insertion (MIMI) is available with the Champion Implant System from Germany (www.mimi-info.com).
Using this technique, the scalpel stays in the drawer and no sutures are required. Obviously the implant is still inserted into the bone but unlike teeth there are very few nerves in it, and therefore, the procedure will be totally comfortable and easy.

The sinus cavities are in direct communication with the nasal airways;therefore what affects one may affect the other.
there are four groups of sinuses: A. Frontal - Paired, in frontal bone. B. Maxillary - Paired, in maxilla. Related to tooth-bearing area of maxilla. C. Ethmoid - D. Sphenoid - paired in the sphenoid bone. The bones of the face and skull have small but definite movement. These movements are essential for good function anddrainage of the sinuses. If there is restriction in these movements then sinuses can become blocked by the fluid they produce, and or dust particles, etc. Anyone who has had a sinus headache knows how thisfeels. The sinus drainage also involves structures in the throat, the upperribs and the upper part of the chest. Again freedom of movement here isvital for the integrity of the sinuses. Traumas to any or all of the abovestructures may cause impairment or lack of function to the sinus pumpsand drainage mechanisms. Osteopathic treatment with regards toblocked or inflamed sinuses is very gentle and soothing. It involves insuring mobility of the structures involved in sinus drainage, and gentlemovements to the bones surrounding the sinuses. In cases where there isno permanent damage to the sinus mechanism osteopathic treatmentcan be very successful.

Dublin date for Britpop legendsBRITpOp legends Cast have announced details of their latest tour that will showcase their brand new album due for release later this year.
The band will be live at the Academy in Dublin on Friday, Decem-ber 9. They were formed in 1992 by John Power (vocals, guitar) and Peter Wilkinson (backing vocals, bass) after Power left The La’s and Wilkinson’s former band Shack had split.
Following early line-ups with different guitarists and drummers, Liam ‘Skin’ Tyson (guitar) and Keith O’Neill (drums) joined in 1993. In 2012, Cast reunited with original producer John Leckie (Stone Roses, Radiohead, The Fall) to release a new album ‘Troubled Times’, their first studio release in over 10 years.
To celebrate the 20th anniversary of the classic album ‘All Change’, Cast united with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Or-chestra for a special live performance in December 2015 for a sold out show at the historic Liverpool Philharmonic Hall. Due to popu-lar demand an extra show was add-ed in February of this year.
Earlier this year, Cast released a brand new song ‘Baby Blue Eyes’ – the first track to be made available from the as yet un-named new album.

“The majority of these dogs are healthy animals surrendered by their owners who cannot or, in some cases, will not care for their pet any more.
Dogs Trust never destroys a healthy dog and our message to dog owners is very simple – please be a responsible dog owner by neutering and microchipping your pet.
Dogs Trust runs affordable neutering and microchipping campaigns throughout the year enabling members of the public to have their dogs neutered and microchipped for free or at a subsidised price.
Dogs Trust also welcomed the introduction of compulsory microchipping into Law earlier this year.
Dogs Trust has been actively working with pounds across Ireland in order to rehabilitate stray and abandoned dogs and home them through their Dublin centre and network of hub
kennels. If you are considering getting a dog, why not give a stray or abandoned dog a second chance of love and life?

Cautious welcome for destruction rate reduction
sTATisTiCs released by the Department of the environment recently revealed that 13,051
dogs entered irish Pounds during 2015, representing a 10 per cent reduction compared to 2014.
The statistics also show that 1,824 dogs were destroyed in Irish pounds in 2015, which is a 37 per cent decrease on 2014. However this still means that five dogs a day were put to sleep in pounds throughout the country.
Of continuing concern to Dogs Trust is the high percentage of registered greyhounds entering and dying in the Pound system. A total of 366 greyhounds entered the Pound system in 2015. Of these, 300 were surrendered by their
owners and 66 were taken in as strays.
Of the 366, a total of 203 were destroyed. Dogs Trust once again calls on the owners and trainers of racing greyhounds to make adequate provision for their rehoming once their racing careers end.
Speaking about the latest figures, Mark Beazley, Executive Director at Dogs Trust said: “The reality of today’s figures show that up to 37 dogs entered Irish pounds each and every day during last year.
“When a dog is picked up by a dog warden and enters the system as a stray, the pound has an obligation to keep the dog for five days in case the owner comes forward looking for their pet.
“However, when a dog is handed over by its owner, as 3,437 were last year, the pound has no legal obligation to keep it for any length of time and the dog could be put to sleep the same day.
Over 1,800 dogs were destroyed in Irish pounds in 2015.▪

Baldoyle tuned in for competition success
munity Club of the Year, for their contributions to the community.
Speaking about their latest success, Baldoyle United chair-man Dermot Penrose said: “It was a fantastic afternoon for us. Keith Andrews passed on some great tips to our developing players and was generous with his time, signing autographs and
taking ‘selfies’ afterwards.”Ahead of next season, 2016/17,
Baldoyle United is currently holding open training sessions for new players, both boys and girls, from aged seven to over 35s. Visit www.baldoyleunited.com, ‘Baldoyle UTD’ on Face-book, or email:[email protected] for more details.
The Dublin-based radio sta-tion asked listeners to text the name of the club they wanted to win.
The Northside club gathered the most texts and their prize was a visit from Andrews to their grounds.
Baldoyle United PRO David Nutley said he was grateful for the support from everyone who sent a text.
“Thanks to the good people of Baldoyle, we sent in the larg-est amount of texts so we won and got the chance to host Keith Andrews at our club,” said Mr Nutley. Andrews, who started his trade with Drumcondra’s Stella Maris FC, played in the Barclays Premier League and went on to represent his country 35 times at senior level, and is now a foot-ball pundit for TV3. He put three
groups of boys and girls, ranging from U-10s to U-18s, from the club, through their paces where he passed on some invaluable advice in a training session that lasted approximately an hour.
Baldoyle United recently won two other major awards: Fingal County Council’s Community Group of the Year and FAI Com-

St Ita’s, who were nominated for their excellence in the Coach Education category, are aiming to become the third Dublin club
to win the award after St Joseph’s Boys in 2008 and Esker Celtic in 2013.
Representatives from the eight nominees were in attendance at the Republic of Ireland v Nether-lands friendly match recently as guests of Aviva to receive their nominees’ cheque for €1,500, and meet the judging panel ahead of their final presentations this month.

World-class athletes set for Morton Stadium
Zealand. Other top class Irish athletes
competing include the fastest Paralympian on the planet, Ja-son Smyth, in the 100m, Amy Foster in the Women’s 100m and in the Men’s 400m, basically the Irish international 4x400 relay team led by Clonliffe Harriers’ Brian Gregan and former Euro-pean Champion David Gillick.
The Women’s 400m race will include European gold med-allists from the UK, Kristen McAslan and Zoe Clark, and two athletes who are using the Meet as their final warm up before the Rio Olympics Games, Ashley Kel-ly (BVI) and Samanta Edwards (ANT).
In the Morton Mile at 9pm, Will Leer will be looking to make history. Leer has won three Mor-ton Miles, all strangely enough, in even years, 2010, 2012 and 2014. In 2014, he broke the 34-year-old stadium record to run the fastest ever mile seen in Ire-land, a world-class 3:51.82.
Santry Stadium is the place to be this Friday, July 22, when top athletes from all over the world converge for the annual Morton Games.
The organisers are hoping for a bumper crowd to witness what promises to be another spectac-ular night’s athletics.
The second fastest athlete on the planet, Yohan ‘the Beast’ Blake, from Jamaica, scorched the Santry track in 2015 where he set an Irish all-comers re-cord.
Last year also featured one of the best mile races seen in the stadium in many years as any one of six athletes could have taken the race up until approxi-mately 20 metres from the line.
Jeff Riseley, from Australia, broke the American stronghold on the event, winning the most prestigious race in Irish athlet-ics, the iconic Morton Mile.
In 2015 there was a resur-gence in Irish wins at the Meet with Ciara Mageean beating a world class field to win the Wom-en’s International Mile.
The Morton Games features a full programme of interna-tional events. The international programme will get underway at 7pm with the 400m hurdles where home favourite Thomas Barr, the 2015 World Universities Champion, will look to regain his Morton Games title.
However, Barr will face world class opposition as on the start line will be world champion final-ist and former NCAA champion, Christian Morton, from Nigeria, who was a semi-finalist at the 2012 London Olympic Games. Also confirmed is Eric Cray, from the Philippines, one of the top ten 400m hurdlers in the world and the return of last year’s win-ner Mike Cochrane, from New

Also expected on the start line in the Morton Mile are Leer’s US teammates Jordan McNamara,
the 2011 Morton Mile winner and Kyle Merber. Ireland’s top milers Paul Robinson, Eoin Everard and Tomas Cotter will be challenging for a home win.
Meet Director Noel Guiden said: “We are very excited for the prospects of another top class night in Morton Stadium.
“Once again we have, as a re-sult of the generous and loyal sponsors of the Meet, been in a position to gather some of the best athletes in the world to come to our capital city.
“Hopefully Dublin’s sports-
mad public will come to Santry because athletics is an outstand-ing spectacle.”
Mr Guiden added: “If you have never been to a track and field Meet I think July 22 will open your eyes.”
Admission to the Meet is €10 (ground admission). Children un-der 16 accompanied by an adult will go free. Tickets for the main stand cost €15.
The international programme will get underway at 7pm sharp but prior to that there will be a pre programme from 5.30pm.

Ireland’s youngest teachers honoured
Over the past nine months, the babies and their parents have been visiting local pri-mary schools in Bray, Wicklow Town, Shankill, Ballybrack and Tallaght as part of a Barnardos programme to teach school chil-dren important lessons about expressing feelings, respect, inclusion, infant development and safety, and the power of a loving bond between parent and child.
The programme, called Roots of Empathy, is led by Barnardos who say it’s an internationally proven primary school class-room programme that reduces levels of aggression among stu-dents, while raising their social and emotional competence and increasing their empathy.
At its heart are a local baby and parent, who visit the class-room with a trained instructor nine times over the school year.
The instructor coaches the school children to observe the baby’s development, celebrate milestones, interact with the baby and learn about the baby’s needs and unique tempera-ment.
The Instructor also visits the class before and after the baby’s visit to prepare and reinforce
teachings, using a specialised curriculum.
Roots of Empathy is deliv-ered by Barnardos in partner-ship with other local agencies and schools in Ireland, and has reached 1,840 children around Ireland this year alone.
The delivery of the pro-gramme is also supported by a
range of local agencies includ-ing SPECS (Supporting Parents in Early Childhood), which funds the implementation of the pro-gramme in three Bray schools.
Those interested in finding out more about the programme, becoming an Instructor or hav-ing their baby ‘teach’ can con-tact Barnardos on 01-4530355.
ELEVEN babies were honoured at a special Barnardos celebra-tion in Bray last month, for be-ing Ireland’s youngest teachers and volunteers!

We must box clever post-brexitCormac Spencer
LAST week’s article discussed the opportunities that Britain’s vote to leave the EU presented to Ireland.
‘Brexit’, as it has been dubbed, has opened up the very real pros-pect of new investment and more jobs for Ireland as well as all the benefits it can bring to our coun-try in terms of extra tax revenue. The last week or so has seemed to confirm that this prospect may in fact become a reality sooner rather than later.
Along with rumours of compa-nies beginning moves to relocate
jobs to Ireland, Connect Ireland has reported a 300 per cent in-crease in enquiries about estab-lishing operations here.
Connect Ireland is an agency that runs a scheme whereby peo-ple can put them in touch with businesses looking to invest, and eventually bring jobs to Ireland, in return for a cash reward of €1,500 per job created.
This increase in interest has come from companies consider-ing where to invest in Europe. Many had the shortlist down to Ireland or the UK. Brexit made the decision for them.
Of course, Connect Ireland is only dealing with expressions of
interest at this point, but it sig-nals that opportunities abound.
What we must ensure now is that our State agencies, our Gov-ernment and our people are in a position to take advantage of them.
While we don’t want to rub the faces of one of our biggest trad-ing partners in it, we can’t be shy about promoting ourselves as the obvious location for that invest-ment capital if in fact it looks for a new base.
One of the concerns for com-panies relocating will be the high cost of rent and the underdevel-oped public transport infrastruc-ture available in this country.
As money becomes more read-ily available, the Government must prioritise these areas in an ambitious as well as environmen-tally conscious way.
We have to look at the bigger picture in terms of what attracts people and jobs to a country.
Ireland is certainly not the only jurisdiction seeking to turn the heads of companies nervous about the impact of Brexit.
On the day following the refer-endum, both Paris and Frankfurt were advertising on the streets of London, looking to lure capital from the English capital. We have competition, so we can’t afford to be caught flat-footed.
The flip side of a potential in-crease in jobs for the country is an opportunity to attract skilled people to Ireland.
The brain drain of the recession has already gone into reverse as young Irish people have started to come home over the last 2-3 years, but Brexit has really given pause for thought for the thou-sands who remain in the UK.
We should do what we can to encourage this homegrown tal-ent back to Ireland and to attract whatever other talent is required to fill these positions and drive our economy.
Our recruitment agency has al-ready seen a rise in expressions of interest from candidates in the UK looking to move to Dublin, in
Brexit has opened up the very real propsect of new investment and more jobs for Ireland. ▪
Consider car loan finance options carefully ARE you longing to upgrade your car but don’t understand your finance options?
At Progressive Credit Union some of the most common questions they hear from their members are:
•Do I need a deposit or to have shares as security? •How much can I borrow?•What are the costs of my monthly repayments?According to Progressive Credit Union, each product has its
pros and cons. With a H.P. option there is a lower monthly repayment, and all
paperwork is handled in the dealership. However, this option requires a deposit and it costs
significantly more over the lifetime of the loan. The Personal loan has a higher monthly repayment as you’re
borrowing more because it requires no deposit. However, it still has a significantly lower cost of interest.
A Progressive Credit Union (PCU) personal car loan can be for any amount is based on your ability to repay.
PCU can provide a decision in 24 hours and is also working with local garages to offer a competitive finance package, as it is seen in the trade as a true financial alternative to getting you in the driving seat.
If you are not yet a member of PCU, call into one of their branches in Balbriggan, Donabate, Glasnevin Victory, Howth-Sutton, Swords Rivervalley or Skerries. Alternatively, phone 01-8411348, email [email protected] or visit www.progressivecu.ie.
part as a result of the vote. The change is happening now!
As I said last week, Brexit will certainly have its challenges. However, it is the opportunities we should focus on.
By boxing clever, investing properly in the infrastructure of the country and promoting Ire-
land effectively as a place to do business, we can take advantage here of the decisions that have been made elsewhere.

Campaign aiming to put lamb on male dominated BBQ menu
Almost two thirds (66 per cent) of those surveyed named the man of the household as the head BBQ chef.
The consumer survey coincides with the EU co-funded ‘Lamb – Tasty, Easy, Fun’ campaign, and it also revealed that barbequed lamb wins out as the favourite lamb mid-week dish for summer (23 per cent), beating off stiff competition from stir-fry’s (13 per cent) and stews (nine per cent).
Launched by Irish chef Mark Moriarty, winner of the 2015 San Pellegrino Young Chef of the World Award, the campaign aims to promote lamb as perfect for quick and healthy meals.
Speaking at the announcement of the campaign, Chef Mark Mo-riarty said: “Lamb is a personal favourite of mine – it’s a wonder-fully versatile and powerful meal ingredient. There’s a great range of delicious recipes available on www.tastyeasylamb.ie.
“They are all quick, easy and tasty, both classic dishes with contemporary twists – I’d encour-age everyone to have a go!”
The new lamb recipes will be published both online and throughout Irish media as part of the campaign, and Bord Bia have also teamed up with six of
Ireland’s leading food bloggers for a behind-the-scenes insight into cooking the recipes.
Lilly Higgins, Ketty Elisabeth (French Foodie in Dublin), Caroline Hennessy (Bibliocook), Imen McDonnell (Farmette), Aoife Ryan (Babaduck) and Liam Boland (Bia Maith) will all post their experiences of cooking up a delicious lamb dish from the new recipe suite on www.tastyeasylamb.ie
“The ‘Lamb – Tasty, Easy, Fun’ campaign is part of our ongoing strategy to highlight the versatil-ity of lamb to Irish consumers,” said Teresa Brophy, Consumer and Trade Marketing Manager at Bord Bia.
THE BBQ season is underway and a new survey by Bord Bia has revealed that the BBQ tongs will be held by a male majority in Ireland this summer.

Once a home qualifies for an upgrade, SEAI will arrange for an assessor to visit the house and de-termine the exact works to be done, which could include attic insulation, cavity wall insulation, draught proofing, lagging jackets and low energy
light bulbs.“The aim of the Better Energy Warmer Homes
scheme is to improve the energy efficiency and comfort of energy poor homes and SEAI is urg-ing those in Dublin who think they are eligible to contact us,” said John Randles, Head of Delivery, SEAI.
“There has been a great demand for the scheme to date and we want to ensure that all eligible homes are aware of the supports available.”
To apply, visit www.seai.ie/warmerhomes and download the online application form, alternative-ly contact SEAI on 1800-250204 or email [email protected]
