The First Organized Territory

• The northwest ordinance also known as the freedom ordinance was passed July 13, 1787

• The reason for the ordinance was to create the northwest territory

• It was located in the region south of the Great Lakes, north and west of the Ohio River, and east of the Mississippi River.

Admission of new states• The us begin to grow over

time by the addition of five new states

• Once a population of 60,000 had been met a new state was created

• Thomas Jefferson came up with 10 names for the new states, but the only ones that we kept we Michigan, Washington and Illinois

Establishment of territorial government

• The ordinance created a government under approval of the congress

• Positions were created for Governor, Secretary, and three Judges

Establishment of civil rights

• Many of the concepts of the ordinance were added in to the us constitution and the bill of rights

• Religion, morality, and knowledge were necessary to a good government also freedom of religious worship and bans on huge fines were written in to the charter

Prohibition of slavery

• The ordinance also banned all slavery

• Although it was banned it did not end until right before the civil war
