About this Issue

Norway’s Guide

Information is invaluable in today’s world of business.

Norway’s Guide provides Norwegian decision makers

with access to one of the best supply chains in the world.

The UK companies featured in this publication provide

quality products and services that can be supplied to

Norway. By providing Norway with this information we

aim to promote further trade and build stronger

relationships across the North Sea.

Companies included in Norway’s Guide have specifically

stated that they want to work with Norway. They may

have supplied directly, or indirectly, but have now put

themselves forward to work more closly with Norway.

This publication is produced annually and distributed

across Norway. You can also access the eBook at

www.norway2uk.com where it is updated throughout

the year.

The Norwegian Collaboration Center has been

specialised for over 10 years in the ways of Norwegian

and UK business. We work closely with government,

industry and research organisations on developing trade

between Norway and the UK.

With this new publication we aim to build on our past

success and help you find the best suppliers in the UK.

UK Supply Chain

This issue of Norway’s Guide focuses on companies

within the UK who supply to the energy industry. The

companies featured in this publication have the ability

and the quality to provide value to the Norwegian

supply chain.

The trading relationship between Norway and the UK

dates back centuries. It was not until the late 1960’s and

the discovery of oil in the North Sea that things became

really interesting.

Since then both countries have grown up servicing the

North Sea, both building 40 years of skills and

experience in the sector. With the next era of renewable

energy quickly approaching, the past 40 years will prove

invaluable to develop this fledgling industry.

With the increase in activity an efficient supply chain is of

the ut most importance. One of the worlds best supply

chains is just across the water in the UK, it is now more

important than ever to have access to the quality

companies within it.

Being Part of an International Networka history of co-operation

There is strong co-operation rooted in centuries of history between the UK and

Norway. The past 40 years has seen the oil and gas industry dominate activities

between the two countries. In the future, both old and new energy sources will

continue to strengthen the links that have already been forged over the North Sea,

as well as creating new opportunities for the next 40 years of activity.

NOF Energy is delighted to be involved in

this very important guide, which

highlights the strong and ever-growing

affiliation between the Norwegian and UK

energy sector supply chains.

Norway continues to be a significant

market for NOF Energy members. A

considerable number actively export to

the Norwegian oil and gas sector with

many working through local partners,

demonstrating a positive commitment to

mutually-beneficial working relationships

between the two countries.

To this end, we have formed effective

partnerships with organisations like the

Norwegian Collaboration Centre to

ensure businesses from both countries

can take advantage of potentially

lucrative opportunities.

NOF Energy, in partnership with the

Norwegian Collaboration Centre as well

as UK Trade & Investment, Department

of Energy and Climate Change and the

North East of England Regional

Development Agency, One North East,

has implemented a number of initiatives

to bring the two countries’ markets

closer together.

These mutually-beneficial agreements

allow us to tap into local contacts,

encourage respective memberships to

work together in partnering arrangements

and receive support for reciprocal visits.

A series of market visits led by NOF

Energy have allowed UK companies to

engage directly with their Norwegian

counterparts to form relationships and

secure new business.

The benefits of taking part in the visits

include direct contact with the main

players through targeted client visits,

receptions to meet local businesses, a

comprehensive in-country briefing and

building links with support organisations.

NOF Energy has also assisted with a

number of events, which have been held

in the UK to introduce Norwegian

industry to our supplychain. Among

these events was Rediscover North East

in Newcastle, which attracted a large

delegation of Norwegian companies

aiming to strike up new relationships with

British suppliers.

NOF Energy has established amembership package forNorwegian businesses thatdelivers a gateway to the UKmarket and step-by-step supportfrom our experienced team.

With a membership in excess of 360

companies serving the oil, gas, nuclear

and offshore wind sectors, NOF Energy

provides business development services

that assist members in winning new

contracts, gaining industry intelligence

and strengthening their position in a

growing international market.

In addition to working to promote British

suppliers to the global energy market,

NOF Energy also supports international

companies looking to access the UK.

Being part of a successful international

network is key to the future success of

supply chain companies. NOF Energy

has established a bespoke membership

package for Norwegian businesses that

delivers a gateway to the UK market and

step-by-step support from our

experienced team.

Essentially, it also provides access to

NOF Energy’s strong and diverse

network of members who are keen to

work together and form inter-trading

partnerships.

The UK supply chain is held in very high-

regard by the Norwegian energy market

and the many years of trading between

the two countries is testament to the

consistent innovation and first-class

skills offered by British companies.

NOF Energy, through its suite of

international business development

services, aims to be at the heart of this

relationship and will continue to facilitate

new and fruitful partnerships between

companies from both countries.

The UK and Norwaya close collaboration

There are few closer relationships in the energy sector today than between the

UK and Norway. From the Ormen Lange gas field on the Norwegian continental

shelf which is to meet so much of the UK’s future gas needs to the hundreds of

UK companies that converge at ONS in Stavanger every two years, to the

progress seen in renewable technology and energy efficiency, there’s no doubt

that Norway is a key target for the UK supply chain.

ICDataStream, the EIC’s sophisticated,

well established database that tracks

over 7,800 projects in the global energy

industry, backs this up. If you search

under current and future offshore

projects in Europe, the UK is in the lead

with 191 projects followed by Norway

with 126. If you search under mid-stream,

Norway has 10 current projects – behind

just Russia, England, Italy and Germany,

and has a number of renewable (8) and

power projects (10) as well.

It is for this reason that the EIC, as the

leading trade association for UK

companies supplying goods and services

to the energy industries worldwide, is so

delighted to be supporting the latest

edition of Norway's Guide to the UK

Supply Chain.

Established in 1943, the EIC has around

600 member companies and provides

them with the capability to understand,

identify and pursue global business

opportunities. The EIC membership

comprises contractors and suppliers

from all areas of the energy sector,

employing up to one million people and

generating up to £100 billion in revenues

from their UK operations.

At ONS in 2008 we had the

honour of welcoming Crown

Prince Haakon of Norway to our

stand and this year we will be

bringing 41 companies to

Stavanger.

The UK supply chain has a huge amount

to offer Norwegian companies in so

many different ways:

Firstly, whether it be decommissioning

projects or supporting and enhancing

current operations, UK companies are

ideally placed to support Norway in its

offshore oil & gas operations. There is no

better example of this than at the

Offshore Northern Seas (ONS), held

every two years, in Stavanger where the

EIC always sells out its exhibition space

for UK companies. In 2008 we had the

honour of welcoming Crown Prince

Haakon of Norway to our stand and this

year we are offering even more space

and will be bringing 41 companies to

Stavanger. These include instrumentation

providers, Advanced Sensors;

petrochemical suppliers, Castrol

Offshore; pump and valve specialists,

Clyde Union; heat transfer specialists,

Heatric; CCTV suppliers, Synectics

Industrial Systems; WEG Electric Motors;

and many others.

There are many other energy sectors

where the UK is and will continue to

support Norwegian companies.

For example, National Grid’s

announcement in 2009 that it was in

talks with Statnett to lay a £1 billion cable

beneath the North Sea to connect the

countries offers significant opportunities

to the UK supply chain.

It would enable the UK to import

electricity from hydroelectric plants in

Norway but also allow the UK to export

electricity generated from offshore wind

farms in the North Sea to Norway.

And as the UK continues to focus on

onshore and offshore wind farms as part

of its drive to generate up to 30 per cent

of electricity from renewables by 2020,

there is a huge amount of expertise the

UK supply chain can offer to Norwegian

companies.

Carbon capture storage is another area

where the two countries are working

together following on from the 2009

announcement by the UK and Norway to

commission a study into assessing the

North Sea’s potential for storing

European CO2 emissions.

UK companies are playing a leading role

in finding environmentally sound

solutions to the challenges of worldwide

rising energy demand as well as

supporting current oil & gas operations in

maximising recovery. We encourage

Norwegian companies to find out more

about everything the UK has to offer.

An Outstanding Maritime Heritagecentre of excellence for marine design

Norway and the UK have one of the longest maritime relationships in history. Since

the days of the Vikings the maritime lives of the UK and Norway has been entwined.

The UK has been one of Norway’s most important trading partners. Today, the eco-

nomic links between the two countries has never been stronger. With increasing oil,

gas and renewable energy activity in the North Sea and beyond, the world-class

maritime industries in both countries will play a vital role in future success.

For Norwegian businesses, the Marine

Design Centre (MDC) offers a simple

solution to marine project requirements.

One contact with MDC will provide

access to the array of capability present

in the membership, with the suitably

experienced and qualified resource

identified by MDC’s business

development team.

This could be a specialist, niche resource

provided by a single company or a

collaborative team comprising designers

and engineers with the appropriate skills

from a number of MDC members.

The MDC in Newcastle, North East

England, is building on the region’s

history of innovation in shipbuilding to

make collaboration with expert marine

design and engineering companies easy.

The MDC provides facilities for

companies to work together and helps

businesses to find partners with the

required experience and capability.

The company was established in 2007 to

support design and engineering

companies operating in the marine

sector, and now provides business

development and marketing services,

networking opportunities, events and

training, as well as a design office which

is open for companies to use for joint

projects or as a growth facility.

MDC operates as a hub for its

membership of innovative and pioneering

companies, increasing opportunities to

bid for new projects. This is achieved

through collaborative working, ensuring

that members have access to the very

best in training and new technology and

that there is a growing supply of talented

people coming into the industry.

Since it was launched, the company has

set about promoting the wide ranging

capability of its members, in the offshore

oil & gas, offshore renewable,

commercial shipping and naval defence

markets. MDC has developed

relationships with potential customers in

the UK and internationally, receiving a

positive response to the significant

capability available.

As well as attending events, MDC has

played host to a number of guest speakers

and inward trade delegations, with plans in

place to continue with its successful series

of networking events with guest speakers

operating in the key markets.

The capability of MDC’s members in

these key markets extends to

approximately 600 designers and

engineers, covering a wide range of skills

and disciplines. Allied to the Marine

School at Newcastle University, the UK’s

leading marine university, clients can

access a full range of range of project

services from a collection of leading

names in the sector, taking in research

and development, concept design,

detailed design and engineering, marine

and offshore consultancy activities,

specialist equipment design and

British - Norwegiancenturies of commerce

Although Britain and Norway have been trading partners for centuries, the trade

links between the two have changed and developed dramatically in the past 50

years, not least due to the strong cultural and historical ties between the two

countries.

The UK is Norway’s single most

important export market, and raw

materials are well represented in the

export figures, e.g. oil and gas related

products, metals, food, and wood

products. Many of these are developed

further by UK based companies and sold

on to the rest of the world.

However, other, more high tech products

and services have been exported in

recent years reflecting a change in

economic output in Norway and building

on the very high levels of educational

achievement and development of service

industries.

British exports to Norway include

machinery, data and office equipment, as

well as electronic and scientific

equipment. British companies are

amongst the largest foreign investors in

the Oslo Stock Exchange, particularly in

the shipping, banking, and insurance

sectors.

Norway’s economic, political, and social

stability provide a sound business

environment, and foreign investors are

also grateful for Norway’s membership of

the European Economic Area, which,

although not full membership of the EU,

nevertheless extends many of the EU

business and economic directives into its

market.

The British-Norwegian Chamber of

Commerce (BNCC) is a non-profit

organisation based in Oslo, striving to be

the leading networking forum for the

promotion of British-Norwegian trade,

providing a professional and social

environment in which we introduce

organisations to the British-Norwegian

business community in Norway.

We host regular events throughout the

year, with speakers who cover topics of

interest such as business life in the two

countries, offering opportunities to meet

business leaders who are actively

involved in the British and Norwegian

markets. Discussions and social

gatherings follow the presentations,

allowing ample opportunity for

networking. Our events usually take

place at the British Embassy in Oslo,

where members have the opportunity to

meet Embassy representatives.

Offering a network of over 200 active

participants in excess of 100 member

companies and collaborators, from a

broad range of sectors including energy,

shipping, IT/media, financial and

educational. Membership with the BNCC

is open for all companies and individuals

interested in activities of the BNCC and

to those aiming to develop their

professional network.

It would be a great pleasure for us to see

you at one of our events and have your

name associated with us in the promotion

of British-Norwegian trade. For more

information about the BNCC, forthcoming

events and application for membership,

Renewable Energy

Electric utilities are increasingly tasked with meeting

Renewable Portfolio Standards, and are looking to

generate power from wind, solar, geothermal, and

biomass sources. But integrating the power from

renewable sources into the grid can be a daunting

challenge. S&C can help you meet this challenge.

S&C-designed collector systems maximize available

output from renewable energy sources. And S&C’s

energy storage solutions facilitate the dispatch of

these intermittent sources.

S&C offers complete solutions to resolve

interconnection challenges: From expert engineering

analyses . . . to field-proven products . . . to

complete Engineering, Procurement and

operation of your renewable energy plant.

Smart Grid

Everybody’s talking about the Smart Grid of the

future. But there’s disagreement about what

it is and its value. Many so called “Smart Grid

technologies” haven’t been proven in the field.

Or they require extensive engineering by the end

user to the point these technologies aren’t

practical to implement or maintain. S&C has made

sense out of all the hype. We offer complete,

field proven Smart Grid Solutions that can help you

realise major goals for the Smart Grid today,

including:

• Self healing response to distribution system

problems such as faults, and voltage reductions or

• Power quality and reliability matching 21st

century needs.

• Integration of all generation and storage

options, including renewable energy sources a

critical need as utilities look to reduce their

dependence on carbon based generation sources.

• Asset optimisation and heightened efficiency

Established in 1983, Vanguard Foundry Ltd is a privately owned company specialising in the manufacture of Iron castings for the turbo-charging,diesel engine, agricultural & general engineering sector. Approved to ISO 9001-2000, we produce the entire Ductile Iron range including Simo, Ni-resist & ADI materials.

We are proud of our reputation for high quality service which has been recognised by many leading manufacturers including Cummins Engine

Why Vanguard?

The patterns for the production of prototypes can be easily modified

during development and then used for series production saving time to

market and cost.

With both high pressure greensand and resin bonded moulding systems

Vanguard offers flexibilty and versatility that is rare in a modern foundry.

Vanguard's versatility extends to the range of cast-irons in regular

production. We offer grey (flake graphite) irons at one end of the

spectrum to the full range of ductile irons at the other which include Ni-

Technical Services & Specifications

Facilities now available within the foundry have been

bolstered by additional CAD and solidification

modelling software. Vanguard Foundry can now

receive CAD data from engineers, model the

founding characteristics and agree necessary

modifications to designs before customers waste

time and money on equipment only to find

modifications are required at a later date.

This facility will enable customers to get product to

market faster and with confidence of a right first time

approach.

Material Specifications

Many custormers ask for castings to be produced to

their own material specification and Vanguard has

the flexibility to cope with this demand. For other

customers Vanguard produce castings that meet

international standards for specifications for ductile

iron to EN 1563 1997.

Special Cast Irons

Special cast irons covers a multitude of materials but

high silicon-molybdenum and austempered ductile

irons are two in regular production at Vanguard

Foundry Ltd. High silicon-molybdenum irons were

developed to meet the increasing demand for high

strength ductile irons capable of operating at high

temperatures. This material ideally suited

applications such as manifolds and turbocharger

housings where strength, oxidation resistance,

structural stability and resistance to thermal cycling

are key to performance. Austempered ductile iron

was developed to provide a cost effective material

with high strength but more importantly excellent

wear resistance. The combination of strength and

resistance to abrasion whilst retaining some ductility

make it an ideal material for agriculture, construction,

mining, gears, and many other diverse applications.

Austenitic Cast Irons

Austenitic irons have greater resistance to heat and

corrosion when compared to standard grades. Other

properties include thermal expansion, magnetic

permeability, impact value at low temperatures and

erosion resistance will vary with the grade of

austenitic iron. Vanguard foundry has both the

expertise and the experience to successfully

produce these technically demanding materials.

Casting Production

With its emphasis on service and flexibility Vanguard

Foundry Ltd offers two distinctly different moulding

systems to its customers, a high pressure green

sand moulding line and a chemically bonded boxless

moulding system. The green sand system, based on

the Heinrich Wagner Sinto (HWS) moulding machine,

is ideally suited to the smaller product with repeating

or high volume demand. The chemically bonded

system with its variable mould size can cater for

much larger castings and also suits the low volume

items which repeat rarely if ever. Both systems give

good dimensional stability and repeatability.

Quality

We are committed to ISO 9001-2000 as the

minimum standard on which to base a programme of

continuous improvement. This will ensure we provide

first class products which adhere to our customer's

quality & technical specifications.
