Edgeware will be without a pool for another summer as the battle for its rebuild continues.

The St Albans Pool Group, which has been pushing to re-build the pool on the same site, lodged a resource consent appli-cation to the city council late last year.

But the group has since been forced to relodge the application following information requests from the city council.

Group secretary Valerie Somerville said the application was relodged after the group was asked to redesign the pool on a smaller area.

She said water services had also asked for changes on where

the wells were to go, after find-ing out they were in the car park area.

The new application was lodged in September but city council resource consents unit manager John Higgins said the information was yet to be re-ceived.

A letter was sent to the group outlining the changes – which needed to be made by November 5.

City council urban design and landscape planners outlined is-sues such as amendments to the building height, tree removal and parking.

The letter also requested in-formation about how cycle and pedestrian access would be avail-able from Trafalgar St.

This year Willowbank Wildlife Reserve may be adding a veteri-nary hospital to its list.

The Wildlife Veterinary Trust is looking to create the South Island Wildlife Hospital at the reserve for native and endemic species.

The hospital will also care for specialised wildlife where individuals or populations are at risk.

At present, the more com-mon species are treated and rehabilitated by a loose unit of volunteers and at shelters.

It is envisaged that this wildlife facility will also act as a co-ordinating centre for the network and provide services and training that will enhance the work done in the area.

Many endangered birds needing medical care (for example, takahe, kiwi and ka-

kapo) are often flown to Auck-land Zoo or Massey University, Palmerston North.

The time and travel involved in sending these birds to the North Island means they are exposed to additional un-necessary stress and delays in treatment, which can impact significantly on their survival.

The South Island facility will allow for specialised treatment of the native species.

Repair for flying foxThe St Albans Park flying fox seat has been removed after be-ing damaged. The city council is arranging for a replacement seat. A city council spokeswoman said the cost and availability of a re-placement seat is currently under investigation.

Working party namedA joint working party has been formed for the rebuild of the Bishopdale Library and Com-munity Centre. The Fendalton-Waimairi Community Board has nominated Val Carter, David Cartwright, Bridget Williams and Jamie Gough to be the board representatives for the project.

Skaters wantedThe St Albans Skate Jam will be held on Saturday, January 24, at St Albans Park, Madras St. The free event will run from noon until 3pm. Instructors from the Skate Skool will be there with free gear hire available for beginners. Competitions will be held with $500 worth of prizes to be won. A barbecue will also take place at the event.

Arson suspectedPolice suspect arsonists are the cause of two fires which ripped through vegetation and forced 40 homes to be evacuated in North Canterbury last Monday. Three crews remained at the scene of the two fires at Pines Beach over-night. One crew remained at a house adjacent to Pines Beach forest and one in the forest.

to incorporate a community hall and swimming pool at the same location.

“People are crying out for the pool,” he said.Mrs Somerville said the rebuild would require

public funding.“There’s such a great need for water space – hav-

ing a pool in walking distance of each community would be amazing,” she said.

The old pool was run by locals until 2002 when it was taken over by the city council and demol-ished in 2006.

The original pool was constructed more than 75 years ago.

In spite of major setbacks last year, community boards in the nor’west area are looking toward a busy 2015.

The Fendalton-Waimairi and Shirley-Papanui community boards have set out their main priorities.

Fendalton-Waimairi chairwoman Val Carter said this year’s focus will be on traffic and parking issues, and fast-tracking the rebuild of the Bishopdale Library and Commu-nity Centre.

“Parking for the drift out to the nor’west is still a problem and we will continue with that one. Our big one although is the Bishopdale community centre and we will be working very hard on that.

“We have put in a number of right-hand turns at lights and we will request more – the traffic pat-terns have really changed since the earthquakes,” she said.

Mrs Carter said some of last year’s priorities had been significantly slowed down because of the city council’s lack of available funding.

She said silver birch trees causing health problems should have been of higher importance to the city council.

“It’s the one thing that really needs addressing in our ward,” she said.

Shirley-Papanui chairman Mike Davidson said there would be some big issues, projects and events that would highlight the year.

He said focus would be placed on resolving issues with the Cranford St four-laning project.

Mr Davidson said two other ma-jor priorities were the representa-tion review and progressing the Edgeware Village Master Plan.

“The stand out for me last year was getting the St Albans transition-al community centre back into the hands of the community to man-age,” he said.

“We also ran a community conversation around local facilities in St Albans and have formed a working party with a number of community representatives to develop a submission to the long term plan,” he said.

Mr Davidson said he hoped the submission would help progress a permanent community centre in the area.

Ben and Jean Austen were recently joined by the majority of their children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren to celebrate their 70th wedding anniversary.

Mr Austen, 93, and Mrs Austen, 92 (born Stoddart), were married at St Paul’s Anglican Church, Papanui on December 23, 1944.

The pair moved to Shirley after their mar-riage and raised four children, before moving back to Redwood.

Remarkably, they have retained reason-ably good health and still live independently in St James Ave – just a stone’s throw from where they were mar-ried 70 years ago.

The couple have always kept busy with their own interests.

They also take an active interest in the lives of their 13 grand-children and 29 great- grandchildren.

When asked what the secret was to a long and happy marriage, Mr Austen quickly replied, “staying alive.”

Couple celebrate 70 years of marriage Summer is in full swing and surf lifeguards are out in force at our

beaches. Emily Jones has volunteered at Taylors Mistake Surf Life Saving Club since she was 14. Reporter Bridget Rutherford talked to her about why she does it, who the most troublesome people are, and the funniest rescue she’s had to carry out.

So Emily, tell me a bit about yourself.Well I grew up in Redcliffs so was always

close to the beach. I started nippers lessons at Sumner pretty much as soon as I could swim and have been a lifeguard at Taylors Mistake since I was 14. I went to Cashmere High School and I am 21 now. I am a volunteer lifeguard at Taylors Mistake on the weekend and on weekdays I work as a paid regional lifeguard. So we get rostered on and rotate around the different beaches and I get to work with lifeguards from other clubs.

So what made you want to become a life-guard?

I guess I’ve always loved being at the beach, growing up near one, and you get to help peo-ple. Just coming up through junior surf you see and idolise the senior lifeguards and want to do what they are doing. You learn a lot about the beach and the water and being able to transfer that knowledge onto other people is pretty cool.

And what does your role at Taylors Mis-take entail?

We’re all volunteers so we are rostered on at different times. We have seven patrol teams that rotate with about 10 people in each. So on an average day we will arrive at 10am and someone will go for a paddle in the water to check the conditions. Then we put the flags up where the safest spot to swim is. We talk to some of the swimmers and tell them where it is safe to swim and we have someone on the tower looking out. We do all the preventative

stuff like moving people between the flags and removing glass from the beach and keeping it clean and safe. And then if anything goes wrong we do the rescues.

So have you been busy over the holiday break?

We work here from November through to March, so there were heaps of people down here over Christmas and New Year and it was really busy. The busy days are good, it makes the time go fast and it is good having lots of people down here. On a colder day it can still be busy because the surf is better when it is raining - more people come than you would think.

Have you had to carry out many rescues?Yes, heaps. At Taylors this season there have

been two rescues so far. It’s been a relatively safe summer with either no rips or small rips. Sometimes when the beach is full not every-one can swim between the flags and we will have to carry out mass rescues.

What was one of the funniest rescues you have done?

fully grown man, who had got cramp while he was out in the water. Usually surfers are really competent and help us out but I had to go out and tow him back in so he was quite embarrassed. That was quite a funny one.

Do you ever worry about sharks when you are in the water?

Not really, I know they could be there but hardly ever think about it when I’m in the bay. We do have shark sightings occasion-ally at Taylors but more often than not they are basking sharks which are harmless and wouldn’t bother swimmers anyway.

What is the most common complaint from beach goers?

We’ve had a lot of blue bottles recently, so some people have been getting stung. Oth-erwise the black sand gets quite hot so there is a lot of towel hopping but most people are pretty happy to be out there.

Who are the most difficult people?People who have had a few too many

drinks can be a bit difficult to deal with, but that doesn’t happen very often at all.

Being a lifeguard, do you ever get hit on when you are at work?

Oh, only a couple of times, I haven’t had any Baywatch pick up lines. The boys get hit on sometimes, everyone loves a life guard.

Have you competed in surf life saving competitions?

Yep, that’s like the other side of life saving. So I have competed at lots of different com-petitions.

What do you think your best achieve-ment at a competition was?

I got a silver medal at the IRB Nationals for the single rescue in an inflatable boat so that was pretty cool.

What would be the best advice you could give to swimmers at the beach this sum-mer?

I guess just swim between the flags where it is safe, and if you go to a beach that is not supervised, don’t go by yourself. If you get into trouble in the water stay calm and put your hand straight up in the air. Float on your back if you can and wait for help to come. Other than that just stay sun smart and have a good time.

Summer is awesome, it’s like a family down at the surf club.

Two Christchurch people are on the shortlist to be New Zealand’s local hero of the year.

Steven Parkinson-Loane of Red-wood and Amy Burke of North New Brighton are among the 10 fi-nalists shortlisted for the Kiwibank Local Hero of the Year award.

The award recognises those who have made a lasting impact in their communities.

Redwood resident Mr Parkin-son-Loane created and runs Can We Fix It Yes We Canterbury, a vol-untary group helping Canterbury people maintain their homes and backyards.

For those suffering health is-sues, financial troubles or any other problems, Mr Parkinson-Loane rallies teams of volunteers to mow lawns, weed gardens, clear debris

and do light maintenance on prop-erties.

He finds people in need and often works up to 10 hours a day answer-ing online requests, fundraising to cover costs, labouring and organis-ing volunteer groups.

Without Mr Parkinson-Loane the organisation would not exist.

It is run solely on donations and the generosity of others, including fundraising from sausage sizzles and bake sales.

North New Brighton resident Mrs Burke set up the Facebook page “Help for the homeless Christ-church” after concerns about what was happening on Christchurch’s streets.

With the help of a friend, Help for the Homeless’ operational base is Mrs Burke’s kitchen table.

They distribute warm clothing and food every night of the week to

the homeless people in the city.The operation has also attracted

support and donations from busi-nesses and volunteer nurses to treat the homeless.

Chief Judge Cameron Bennett said this year’s calibre of nomina-tions was high.

“Some have worked tirelessly to making other Kiwis better off while others have inspired us through being the very best at their chosen fields,” he said.

The winner will be announced at the New Zealander of the Year Awards evening in Auckland on February 25.

Last year more than 200 local heroes from around the country received medals at a special cer-emony acknowledging their con-tribution.

More than 230 nominations were received for 2015.

Local heroes in national final

Korowai Youth Well Being Trust received donations from two Christchurch based global organisations recently to make a web-site.

Soroptimist International of Christchurch and Kiwanis Service Club donated a total of $28,000.

Trust chairwoman Dr Sue Bagshaw was pre-sented the cheques which were raised from fun-draising activities over the last two years.

Earthquake money was also donated to help the youth of Christchurch.

Soroptimist International of Christchurch

publicity officer Lesley Fursdon said it was worthwhile giving a donation because the trust knew what it wanted to spend the money on.

She said Soroptimist had heard Kiwanis was also raising funds and they decided to join forc-es.

The website would have an interactive page for youth to ask questions and would feature in-formation on how to keep mentally, physically, spiritually and socially healthy.

The trust is dependent on donations to run the free service.

It has been an up and down first half of the cricket season for the city’s north-western clubs.

It has been a case of playing well in one for-mat but struggling in the other for St Albans and Burnside while Marist-Harewood and Old Boys have had harder seasons so far.

Going into Saturday’s games Burnside and St Albans led the two-day and one-day com-petitions respectively while Old Boys were mid-table and Marist-Harewood were strug-gling.

Burnside finished runner-up in the Twen-ty20 competition played in November.

They are also the leaders of the two-day competition 10 points ahead of nearest rivals Lancaster Park-Woolston.

Burnside coach Alex Reese said they had a “very good” start to the season winning all three two-day games outright and he put it down to the bowling unit.

“I think with the two-dayers it’s our bowl-ers that give us the X-factor and it’s our great young spinners coming through.”

Reese said young leg-spinner Blake Co-burn had performed exceptionally well and was in great form.

In the penultimate round Burnside face off against Lancaster Park, which could be a title-deciding clash.

St Albans were unbeaten over the Christ-

mas break winning all six of their one-day games and sat at the top of the ladder, three points above East Christchurch-Shirley.

The match between those two sides is in the last round of the competition and is shaping as a decider for the top spot before the semi-finals.

St Albans faced a tough task in their first game back after the break on Saturday in the form of Canterbury Country at Halswell Do-main.

Marist and Old Boys are having a tougher time across all formats.

The Redwood Park-based Marist have failed to keep up with the competition and are at the foot of the one-day table and only one place better in the two-day format.

There is a bright spot on the horizon however as three of their final four two-day games are winnable.

Riccarton, Old Boys and Sydenham are all beatable teams for Marist and they will be looking to end the season on a positive note.

Old Boys meanwhile sat in sixth place in both formats over the Christmas break.

In the two-day format they managed only one win and sit only five points above the bottom placed side.

There is still hope in the one-dayers how-ever with the Elmwood Park side going into the second half of the season one point out-side the top four with three games still to play.

First of all, happy new year to ev-eryone in Christchurch.

The last week or so has seen summer finally making itself felt with high temperatures and warm nights.

Christmas Day itself saw fire-fighters attending 14 incidents in the city.

That’s about average for any other day but we did see one call assisting St John that resulted in the death of the patient. Makes it an awful Christmas for that fam-ily.

In another case in Mountbat-ten St, New Brighton, Christmas dinner was ruined when the bar-becue preparing it set fire to the garage.

Assisting our ambulance col-leagues accounted for 14 calls in the past week while false alarms were down and miscellaneous fires, those in bins, rubbish and couches were right up there with 32 attended.

This last category includes bad luck, recklessness, stupidity and straight malicious arson as the cause of fire.

In nearly all cases they were preventable.

Thinking before acting would be a good start for many of those responsible.

It would be fantastic if 2015

saw a reduction in these ‘idiot’ fires.

I would also be really tickled if our message about staying in the kitchen when stove top cooking was adopted right across town.

Both of these things would free up fire trucks, so there is no delay the next time someone is trapped in a burning house or a crashed car or even where it al-lows our appliance to arrive two minutes before the ambulance to a cardiac arrest.

Any of which may just save a life.

I think everyone is now aware we are in the middle of what looks like being a very dry sum-mer.

Yet, we’re still seeing deliber-ately lit fires occurring at an un-diminished rate.

Those involved are creeping out of the nuisance category to-wards being a real danger.

Makes you wonder if they ever think of consequence, or more

frightening do they really want to see property destroyed and people or pets hurt, or worse?

We’ve also seen a number of incidents, including one that spread to a house before New Year, that appear to have been caused by fireworks.

These are restricted in their sale to the week before Guy Fawkes.

But a significant number of people store them away to use at or near New Year’s Eve, when grass, bushes and pine needles are desperately dry.

You can be charged with arson for carrying out a reckless act that causes fire.

Lighting fireworks that spurt out brightly burning clusters, at night, on the side of a hill, with a northerly breeze further drying the already parched vegetation, may be seen as reckless by some.

Do you really want a court to decide in your case?

Harewood’s crew met a unique challenge last Tuesday in Avon-head.

A man had a swarm of bumble bees which had taken up resi-dence.

Apparently beekeepers don’t normally deal with these apiar-ian jumbo jets so the occupant tried to smoke them out.

Hence a call to us. Some communications centre magic tracked down an expert. Hope-fully, now all is solved.

Berries have an intriguing history. The ancient Romans believed that

they alleviated symptoms of fevers, throat infections, kidney stones, gout, and diseases of the blood, liver and spleen. Some say that Christ’s crown was made of bramble (also called blackberry). And according to early Christian legend, the Virgin Mary favoured strawberries above all other fruits.

When we think of berries we normally think raspberries, black-berries, boysenberries — fruits with a soft exterior, juicy texture, brightly coloured and with no stones or pips but with many internal seeds.

However, there is a difference be-tween the everyday use of the word and the botanical definition. In fact, these berries are clusters of tiny individual stone fruit, or drupes, set around a central core.

The strawberry is also not a berry but a member of the rose family and is the only fruit with its seeds out-side. Surprisingly, grapes and avoca-dos fall into the berry category.

But today I’m concentrating on what we normally think of as sum-mer berries.

Raspberries: The more than 200 species of raspberries range from white to pink to raspberryred in colour and they are prized for their intense flavour.

Raspberries have been crossed with blackberries to produce logan-berries.

Blackberries: Wild blackberries have the best flavour but the farmed variety are bigger and one does not

have to fight the unruly, thorny branches to secure a berry. Just pick up a pack and enjoy.

Boysenberries: A boysenberry is a cross between a raspberry, a loganberry, a blackberry and an American dewberry.

Blueberries: The blueberry is a true berry with up to 65 almost invisible internal seeds. When buying berries, select those in dry, unstained containers. The berries should be free of surface moisture as this accelerates decay. Refrigerate as soon as possible after purchase.

Blackberries, raspberries and boysenberries should be arranged, unwashed in a shallow pan lined with paper towels, and washed just before use.

The berries can be topped with a paper towel to absorb any additional moisture.

Consume within two to three days of purchase and at room temperature for fullest flavour. Store blueberries unwashed in the refrig-erator in a rigid container covered with plastic film.

They should last up to two weeks if they are freshly picked.

BUTTERY BLUEBERRYPIEThe butter in pastry ensures itis a winner. This recipe may behalved to serve 8 people.

Pastry: 5 cups plain flour1 tsp salt2 tbsp caster sugar500g cold unsalted butter,diced1/2 to1 cup iced waterFilling: 1kg (8 cups) fresh orfrozen blueberries1/2 cup caster sugar3 tbsp cornflourfinely grated rind and juice of2 lemonsGlaze: 1 small egg, lightlybeaten1 tbsp milk2 tbsp caster sugar

Pastry: Pulse the flour, salt, andsugar in a large processor untilcombined. Add the diced butterand pulse until the mixtureresembles coarsebreadcrumbs. With the motorrunning, add a 1/2 cup of icedwater. Pulse until the dough iscrumbly but holds togetherwhen squeezed. Add extrawater, 1 tablespoon at a time ifnecessary. Do not over-mix.Halve the dough and flatten into2 disks. Wrap tightly in plasticfilm. Refrigerate until firm, at

least 1 hour or overnight. Thismakes about 1.3kg of richpastry.

Preheat oven to 200C.Lightly oil a 25cm x 35cm slicepan about 3cm deep.

Filling: Combine theblueberries, cornflour, sugar,lemon rind and juice in a largebowl.

On a floured bench, roll 1 discof pastry to 28cm x 40cm. Linethe base and sides of the slicepan with the pastry. On thefloured bench, roll out a seconddisk to a 25cmx 35cmrectangle. Using a 5cm biscuitcutter, make about 35 rounds.

Pour the blueberry filling intothe pastry-lined pan. Place thepastry rounds over theblueberries. Brush the tops withthe combined egg and milk andsprinkle with the caster sugar.

Bake until the crust is goldenand the juices are bubbling,about 50 minutes. Cool on awire rack for 1 hour. Serve warmor at room temperature.

Great served as is or withwhipped cream or plain yoghurt.

BOYSENBERRY FOOL300g boysenberries1 tbsp honey1 cup cream2 tbsp plain yoghurtextra whipped cream, optional

Puree the fruit and honey untilsmooth. There should be about1 cup of puree. Reserve 3tablespoons of puree forgarnishing.

Whip the cream until stiff.Fold in the yoghurt and pureeand pour into individual servingdishes. Chill well. Servegarnished with the reservedpuree. — Serves 4 to 6

LAMB SALAD WITHBLACKBERRIES &AVOCADO4 lamb steaks, about 600gspray oil2 tsp mixed dried herbsfreshly ground black pepper totaste130g packet mesclun withherbs16 large blackberries1 large avocado, sliced1/4 to 1/2 cup balsamicvinaigrette

Trim the lamb and snip theedges, if required, to stop itcurling during cooking. Spraywith the oil.

Combine the mixed herbsand black pepper and rub on tothe lamb. Cover and refrigeratefor at least 30 minutes.

Return to room temperaturebefore cooking. Barbecue, grillor pan-fry for 4-6 minutes each

side, depending on thickness.Combine the salad greens,

blackberries and avocado in abowl. Thinly slice the lamb andtoss with the salad anddressing. — Serves 4

SUGAR-FREERASPBERRY JAM500g raspberries1/2 cup water8 sugar-free sweeteners1 tbsp hot water4 tsp powdered gelatine

Choose quality raspberries.Place in a large saucepan. Add a1/4 cup of water and simmer,until just cooked.

Crush the sweeteners in the 1tablespoon of hot water and addto the hot (not boiling) fruit.

Soak the gelatine in theremaining 1/4 cup of water thendissolve over hot water or in themicrowave. Add to the fruit andstir gently for about 3 minutes.

Pour into small jars and applyvacuum seals and screw bands.Give the bands a half turnbackwards. Stand the jars on arack in a saucepan. Fill withenough boiling water to justcover and poach for 5 minutes.Lift out and leave to coolcompletely. Remove bandsbefore storing.

— Makes 2 cups

Pastry: 5 cups plain flour 1 tsp salt 2 tbsp caster sugar 500g cold unsalted butter, diced 1/2 to1 cup iced water Filling: 1kg (8 cups) fresh or frozen blueberries 1/2 cup caster sugar 3 tbsp cornflour finely grated rind and juice of 2 lemons Glaze: 1 small egg, lightly beaten 1 tbsp milk 2 tbsp caster sugar

Pastry: Pulse the flour, salt, and sugar in a large processor until combined. Add the diced but-ter and pulse until the mixture resembles coarse breadcrumbs. With the motor running, add a 1/2 cup of iced water. Pulse until the dough is crumbly but holds together when squeezed. Add extra water, 1 tablespoon at a time if necessary. Do not over-mix. Halve the dough and flatten into 2 disks. Wrap tightly in plastic film. Refrigerate until firm, at least 1 hour or overnight. This makes about 1.3kg of rich pastry.

Preheat oven to 200C. Lightly oil a 25cm x 35cm slice pan about 3cm deep.

Filling: Combine the blueber-ries, cornflour, sugar, lemon rind and juice in a large bowl.

On a floured bench, roll 1 disc of pastry to 28cm x 40cm. Line the base and sides of the slice pan with the pastry. On the floured bench, roll out a second disk to a 25cmx 35cm rectangle.

Using a 5cm biscuit cutter, make about 35 rounds.

Pour the blueberry filling into the pastry-lined pan. Place the pastry rounds over the blueberries. Brush the tops with the combined egg and milk and sprinkle with the caster sugar.

Bake until the crust is golden and the juices are bubbling, about 50 minutes. Cool on a wire rack for 1 hour. Serve warm or at room

temperature. Great served as is or with

whipped cream or plain yoghurt. —Serves 16

BOYSENBERRY FOOL 300g boysenberries 1 tbsp honey 1 cup cream 2 tbsp plain yoghurt extra whipped cream, optional

Puree the fruit and honey until smooth. There should be about 1 cup of puree. Reserve 3 table-spoons of puree for garnishing. Whip the cream until stiff. Fold in the yoghurt and puree and pour into individual serving dishes.

Chill well. Serve garnished with the reserved puree. —Serves 4 to 6

LAMB SALAD WITH BLACKBERRIES & AVOCADO 4 lamb steaks, about 600g spray oil 2 tsp mixed dried herbs freshly ground black pepper to taste 130g packet mesclun with herbs 16 large blackberries 1 large avocado, sliced 1/4 to 1/2 cup balsamic vinai-grette

Trim the lamb and snip the edges, if required, to stop it curling during cooking. Spray with the oil.

Combine the mixed herbs and

black pepper and rub on to the lamb. Cover and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes.

Return to room temperature before cooking. Barbecue, grill or pan-fry for 4-6 minutes each side, depending on thickness.

Combine the salad greens, blackberries and avocado in a bowl. Thinly slice the lamb and toss with the salad and dressing.

SUGAR-FREE RASPBERRY JAM 500g raspberries 1/2 cup water 8 sugar-free sweeteners 1 tbsp hot water 4 tsp powdered gelatine

Choose quality raspberries. Place in a large saucepan. Add a 1/4 cup of water and simmer, until just cooked.

Crush the sweeteners in the 1 tablespoon of hot water and add to the hot (not boiling) fruit.

Soak the gelatine in the remain-ing 1/4 cup of water then dissolve over hot water or in the micro-wave. Add to the fruit and stir gently for about 3 minutes.

Pour into small jars and apply vacuum seals and screw bands. Give the bands a half turn back-wards. Stand the jars on a rack in a saucepan. Fill with enough boiling water to just cover and poach for 5 minutes.

Lift out and leave to cool completely. Remove bands before storing. —Makes 2 cups

However,there is a difference between theeveryday use of the word andthe botanical definition. In fact,these berries are clusters of tinyindividual stone fruit, or drupes,set around a central core.

The strawberry is also not aberry but amember of the rosefamily and is the only fruit withits seeds outside. Surprisingly,grapes and avocados fall into theberry category.But today I’m concentrating

Imagine taking a soiled sponge, submerging it in water and then wringing it out. Submerge it again and repeat.

When you rotate your body around the spine in a yoga exercise, you do the same thing to your internal organs. This in-creases circulation of nutrients, blood and oxygen and helps to flush out impurities.

Not only do twists aid in detoxification, but they help to balance out the flow of our energy. As we rotate the body from left to right, we stimulate

both hemispheres of the brain, in turn balancing out the yin and yang flows of energy within our body.

Energy flows up, down and in positive and negative directions.

The yin, feminine and anti-clockwise (or negative) flow of energy magnetises things to us. It is associated with the right brain and left side of the body.

The yang, masculine and clockwise (or positive) flow of energy is associated with the left brain and right side of the body and is associated with outwardly seeking the things that we are attracted to.

When we rotate our body around its axis both clockwise and anti-clockwise as well as cross our limbs across the

mid-line, we help to stimulate and even out the flow of our yin/yang energy (in yoga terms that’s called Prana).

Medical experts are slamming an Australian author for link-ing wireless baby monitors to autism and Sudden Infant Death Syndrome.

“The claims made in this book would be laughable, if they weren’t so irresponsible,” says Telethon Kids Institute head of autism research Professor Andrew Whitehouse.

“This is fearmongering at best, and unethical at worst.” Brisbane author Donna Fisher is calling for the removal of wireless baby monitors from Australian shop shelves because she believes they emit danger-ous radiation.

In her new book, Light That Heals, she claims electromag-netic fields generated by wireless technology have the potential to cause cancer, reproductive problems, chronic fatigue and more. She is also concerned the exposure can increase the risk of Sids and is a contributing factor in the rise in autism.

“Devices such as wireless baby monitors can actually do more harm than good by creating developmental issues in our youngest generation of Austra-lians,” she says.

But autism expert Whitehouse says there is no evidence to suggest a link between the use

of wireless baby monitors and autism.

“It is not clear to me that the author understands the harm-ful effects these completely unsupported claims have on the autism community,” he says.

Jill Green, from Sids and Kids, says no research papers in the organisation’s extensive library catalogue link the use of wireless baby monitors with Sids.

But Professor Olle Johansson, of the Karolinska Institute in Sweden, defended Fisher’s work, saying that exposure to the ra-diation emitted by wireless baby monitors and similar gadgets posed real risks.

“We know that exposure to this radiation may impact DNA, leading to possible cancer risks,” he says.

“It can alter our immune de-fence, and also affects male and female germ cells and fertility.”

Some countries are choos-ing to err on the side of caution with WiFi until more is known. The Australian Government agency for radiation protection says there is no evidence that exposure to electrical fields is a health hazard. But whether exposure to magnetic fields is equally harmless remains a more open question, it says.

Myth No 1Allergiesmay go away.Fact:Thismay be correct. It’s

true that allergies can fluctuatewith the season as allergens, likepollen ormould spores, wax andwane. And some food allergiesseem to disappear as childrengrow older—with the exceptionof peanut and tree nut allergies,which largely continue intoadulthood. But the underlyingcause of any allergy is an over-reaction by a sensitive immunesystem that perceives theallergen as a threat. Over time,your immune systemmay growaccustomed to an allergen andno longer react as strongly. Or,some other type of allergenmayemerge as a trigger. People candevelop allergies later in life,even if they never had them aschildren or young adults.

Myth No 2Houseplants give off pollensthat cause allergies.Fact: Pollen is definitely an

allergy trigger for many people.But the types of pollen thatcause sneezing, coughing anditchy, watery eyes are typicallyfrom outdoor sources like trees,weeds and grass— not indoor

plants. An extensive study byNasa found houseplants canactually improve indoor airquality. They act as natural airfilters by removing carbondioxide and contaminants, andemitting fresh, clean oxygen.

Myth No 3Peoplewith allergies shouldn’thave carpeting in their homes.Fact:Not one scientific study

affirms a link between theincrease of allergies and asthmaand the widespread use of carpetin homes. In fact, several studiesnot only refute a correlation,they even seem to indicatecarpet may actually bebeneficial to allergy sufferers. ASwedish study found that whencarpet use in that countrydeclined by 70 per cent, allergiesincreased by 30 percent.Another study,

encompassing nearly 20,000people in 18 different countries,found reduced asthmasymptoms among people withcarpeted bedrooms. Finally, astudy of more than 4600 NewJersey children found that kidswithmoderate to severe asthmawho had carpet in their

bedroomsmissed fewer schooldays and had less need forasthmamedication.“One explanation could be

that carpet acts like a filter,trapping allergens and keepingthem out of the air so they can beremoved through propercleaning,” says Joe Yarbroughof the Carpet & Rug Institute(CRI). “Effectively cleanedcarpet canmaintain indoor airquality, making it a viable choicefor families impacted byallergies and asthma.”

Myth No 4All you need is a vacuumcleanerwith a Hepa filter.Fact:Actually, it’s how

frequently and effectively youvacuum. To effectively removeallergens, a vacuummust notonly be able to pick up allergens,but also keep them containedinside the bag or canister untilyou can safely dispose of thedirt. Vacuums that expel dustand other allergens through theexhaust are simply putting allthose allergy triggers back intothe air you breathe. The CRItests vacuums for effectivenessand green qualities, and awards

a seal of approval to those thatmeet its testing standards.

Myth No 5Dog/cat hair causes allergies.Fact: If hair were the source

of pet allergies, simply shavingyour pet would eliminate yourallergy trigger.In fact, allergies are triggered

by proteins in oil glandsecretions that get shed asdander, and proteins in salivathat get spreadwhen a pet licksits fur, according to America’sNational Institute ofEnvironmental Health Sciences.Cat dander is themost commonpet-related allergy, but dogdander and rodent urine canalso be triggers.Getting rid of your pet won’t

rid your home of pet dander andhair. the National Institute ofHealth reports that both arepresent in virtually every home.You canmitigate your exposureand reaction by keeping pets offyour bed andwashing theirbedding weekly in hot water,using a prescription or over-the-counter allergymedication forsymptoms, and regularlycleaning carpets.

Best ways to hold and grow assets

The assets you own are your store of wealth.

These can include your home, investment proper-ties, bank deposits, KiwiSav-er, superannuation funds, investment portfolios and businesses.

When you are starting out in life, it is easiest to purchase assets in your own name but for most assets there are other options. Ownership options for per-sonal assets can include:

■ Individual ownership. Your assets are held in your name and you are liable for any tax payable in relation to the assets. Upon your death they will pass to your estate.

■ Joint ownership. You share the ownership of the assets equally with another person or entity. On your death ownership transfers to the surviving person or

entity. Tax liability is shared by the owners.

■ Tenants in common. Two people own a property in equal shares or shares of different sizes, for example, 60 per cent and 40 per cent. If one owner dies, that owner’s share passes on to whomever they choose.

■ Family trust. This is a legal way for you to hold assets for the benefit of you and your family over the long term. The assets are owned by trustees for the beneficiaries (usually you and your family). There are many reasons to consider a trust, which are mostly

aimed at protecting your assets from creditors, the threat of estate duties and relationship property claims.

For business assets, ownership options include sole trader, partnership and limited liability company. As your wealth increases, there may be benefits from using different forms of ownership. It pays to think ahead and decide on which ownership structures are best suited to your circum-stances, because changing the ownership of assets can be costly.

Tax, estate planning and asset protection are all im-portant considerations. Your solicitor and accountant can advise you on the options.

having fun and, for many of us,that’s what this time of year isabout—with the ski seasonalmost here and others lookingfor winter escapes.It’s also a good time to look

ahead and plan for futuresuccess. Strategic planning isan essential component ofsuccessful business and I havetwo plans— one formyself andone for the business— both areintertwined.Formany of us, our

businesses are a reflection ofourselves, so it makes sensethat whenwe plan for ourbusiness(es), they reflect ourown goals and ambitions.So, what are you going to

achieve for the remainder ofthis year?What are yourtargets? Are you going to letlife happen or take astructured approach?It’s important that you set

goals for yourself and yourbusiness that energise,motivate, aremeasurable andattainable. However, you

shouldmake sure that you alsoset some stretch targets.My personal plan includes

revampingmy fitness and hasmany stretches . . . and stretchtargets! I have resolved toexercise at least three times aweek. I did start this columnwith the ‘‘time flies’’ statement,but it seems that in that fitnesstime, I can create an ability toslow time significantly or stopit entirely.So I am going to dust off the

previously unused stepmachine at home. And I will seta goal of ‘‘stepping’’ aparticular distance each day.Given that the garage isn’twarm, there is incentive to getmotivated.The stretch target is to

make this activity daily. OK,not much of a stretch, but rightnow I am about as fit as a BigMac is nutritious.

The key to stretch targets isthat they do just that; theystretch you to new levels ofperformance and, likemuscleswhen you exercise, you andyour business develop newstrengths as you achieve them.I know it won’t be easy—

particularly starting fromscratch— but I want to beexercising every day if I can. Sowhat do you dowhen thingsget toughwhen pursuing agoal? Instead of giving up, youget energised. And although itis a stretch, I believe it isattainable.Oncemy fitness returns, it

will be a goal achieved, and Iwill have developedmoreconfidence andwill feel bettertoo.It’s the same for goal setting

It is not uncommon for NewZealanders to have overseasinvestments.Examplesmight be shares in

assessed as needing support and those with a life-limiting illness.

Nurse Maude’s homecare services are free to those assessed as being eligible for this support, but there is also a private payment option for those not eligible for funding.

Referrals to homecare services may be made directly by clients or their families/whanau, GP, Needs Assessment and Service Coordination Agencies, ACC or public or private hospitals.

Providing nursing and homecare services that allow people to maintain as much independence in their own home and community as possible is a large part of Nurse Maude’s work.

Free Youth Pathways courses help students to succeed

Youth Guarantee is a Government-led initiative designed to help students aged 16 to 19 to study for free.

The scheme is for those who are ready to move beyond school but want to continue with study, learning practical skills for

future employment.Hundreds of students are successful

through the programmes every year, which includes courses in cookery, construction, engineering, health and support, business administration and computing, hospitality, retail, sports training and Maori and Pasi� ka culture. Many go on to work in apprenticeships or further education.

Youth Guarantee student Dylan Dallas feels like he is now achieving something a� er � nding school wasn’t working for him. He now feels motivated a� er completing his Creative Level 2 programme.

“I found it really hard to learn at school and nothing I was learning felt relevant to me,” Dylan says. “� e Youth Guarantee course was really interesting. We did lots of creative prints and 3D modelling. It got me used to studying again, but in a better way than school.”

Dylan will return in 2015 to study his Certi� cate in Design Level 4, but in the future he hopes to become an architect or a

draughtsman. “� is has put me on the path to a future career. I had no idea of what I wanted to do before, whereas now I’m in the right place and on the right track.”

Fellow student Juaan Whatuira-Edwards recommends Youth Guarantee to anyone who “doesn’t � t in academically”. “I didn’t really like school and I didn’t know what I wanted to do with my life. I’m pretty grateful I found Youth Guarantee and got myself some skills,” Juaan says.

Juaan has completed the introduction to trades course and will return next year to do the pre-trade paint and panel course. “I can’t wait to get back into it and learn more. � e tutors are really helpful and it’s really hands on. I really want to make this my career.”

Jordan Taylorlikes mastering the art of beauty

Currently studying a Diploma in Beauty � erapy at � e National School of Aesthetics, Jordan “enjoys the practical application

Making dreams a realityAli Phillips has always known what

her dream job would be. � rough Aoraki Polytechnic, she has been able to take the � rst steps along the

path to making this a reality.Studying at Aoraki’s Christchurch campus,

Ali has completed her second year of hairdressing, a Certi� cate in Professional Hairdressing, Level 3.

“I have always wanted to be a hairdresser since I was little - it has been my passion for many years,” says Ali. “I had grown up doing hair, cutting my Barbie doll's hair and generally fascinated with hairdressing.”

With no experience in the industry and having to balance study with the needs of her family as well, 26-year-old Ali found the perfect � t at Aoraki.

“I’d been looking for a hairdressing course for some time and Aoraki seemed to suit my needs,” says Ali.

� e Level 3 full-time course runs over 34 weeks. It is designed to provide students with all the skills needed to work in a commercial salon environment, including working with clients to advance their cutting, consultation, colouring and styling techniques.

“� ese last two years have both been very challenging and equally rewarding,” says Ali. “I have enjoyed every minute of it and love working with the people that have come through the course so far.”

For Ali, the most rewarding part of her study has been an increase in her con� dence level and learning how to interact with the general public on a professional level.

Aoraki Polytechnic’s tutors are involved and respected in the industry, and provide invaluable links for students to the industry itself.

Ali is creating a portfolio of her work, which will play an important role when seeking an apprenticeship next year to complete her Year 3 quali� cation.

Students are encouraged to aim high, with Ali intending to follow her apprenticeship with a full-time hairdressing position.

“My long-term ambition is to open my own salon,” says Ali.

Rud is that good he was invited to perform at the Rod Stewarts 60th birthday party.

When asked what his career highlights have been so far, Rud lists meeting Rod and performing at his 60th birthday party, singing at the Olympia football stadium, performing at the Helsingborg Festival in Sweden, and having his own song ‘Same Game’ played on BBC Radio 2.
