Bid to lower speed limitopposedBY GRACE CABELL
The city council is at loggerheads with the New Zealand Trans-port Agency over its bid to lower speed on Marshland Rd.
The pace of cars moving through the Shirley-Papanui ward have been studied as part of a citywide review of speed limits by the city council.
The area from Prestons Rd to the Main North Rd/Spen-cerville Rd intersection would be dropped from 80km/h to 70km/h.
A consultation process by schools and businesses in the area showed that 55 per cent of those consulted agreed the speed limit should be dropped.
But the NZTA was opposed to the Marshland Rd speed reduction, and said it should remain at 80km/h to fit the function of the road and its rural environment.
There had been a spate of crashes in the area in recent weeks. Two occurred last Thurs-day where emergency services were called out to both.
One was on Prestons Rd and another on Queen Elizabeth II Drive, where two cars had col-lided.
On October 26, a car which had crashed into a pole at the intersection of Mairehau and Marshland Rds caused power to be cut to 24 homes in the area.

Pupils at Cotswold School are joining in on the Christchurch Stands Tall public art project launching this month.
As part of the Wild in Art’s 26th arts trail, 98 giraffes will be scattered across the city this summer.
The programme has 48 schools registered which will be decorating the 1.3m giraffes.
Children from Cotswold senior school chose for their giraffe to display graffiti-art street signs of well-known streets or landmarks within Christchurch.
Senior teacher and arts leader of learning, Mrs Douglas-Bray, said the design was inspired by Christchurch’s street art.
Mia Suzuki, 11, said she painted the Hagley Park street sign because she visited there on weekends to cycle and run with her family.
Ryan Hands, 10, said he chose to paint the River Rd street sign because it had the river on it, and had been dam-aged a lot by earthquakes.
In between the street signs pupils painted red and black giraffe spots to represent Canterbury colours.
Each child from the school
of more than 550 children added their thumb print to the sculpture to represent pupils at Cotswold standing tall and working together.
Room 5 pupils at Cotswold School named the school’s giraffe Gerald.
The children added the
Cotswold logo and school name at the base of the giraffe to show their sense of belong-ing in the city.
Gerald would be on dis-play in the city, and would be returned to Cotswold School in February next year to be placed in the school garden.
ARTISTIC: Courtney Khieothai, 9, Ryan Hands (back), 10, and Jacob McFedries, 9, help to paint Cotswold School’s giraffe, which was inspired by Christchurch street art.

Village green petanqueMembers of the Merivale Precinct Society will not be able to put in a petanque court at the Merivale Village Green. Following deputation feedback regarding the resource consent process, the Fendalton-Waimairi Community Board decided that a possible petanque court for the green would not be practical. Decisions were made based on the size and location of the area.
Howat leaves City council community recreation adviser Ken Howat, will be leaving the city council after 14 years of service. Mr Howat was presented with a certificate of appreciation by the Fendalton-Waimairi Community Board for his service to the board and the community.

▌▌ IN BRIEF
BY GRACE CABELL
Flood-wary St Albans residents may be getting new culverts.
Overflow in the area has damaged St Albans Creek culverts on Hills and Edgeware Rds and Champion St, caus-ing a ‘damming effect’ during flooding.
At a recent city council meet-ing, the Land Drainage Rebuild Team presented a report of the Dudley Creek Post Earthquake Remediation options.
The second of two options was chosen.
If the $48 million solution was to go ahead, it would include a widening of the culverts.
The city council had asked for public consultation on the issue to be sought to allow residents an opportunity to comment on the proposal.
Edgeware Rd resident, Andrew Pengelly, said it all sounded positive so far.
“From what I understand they’ve done part of what we
wanted and we will just have to wait for the outcome of the public consultation,” said Mr Pengelly.
Stormwater and Land Drainage Rebuild unit man-ager, Keith Davison, said the culverts were key to improve the capability of water flow in the area.
“We would be looking at the drain through there and the design details, to make sure we have the capacity there,” he said.
He said increasing the size of the culverts would definitely improve any bottle-necking in the area.
Mr Davison said it would be up to the land drainage team to work out what size was re-quired, and compare it to what was originally in place.
“If it does need to be larger we will be putting it to coun-cil,” he said.
Public consultation will run from November 10 to Novem-ber 26.

GOOD TIME: Funds given to Marian College following the earth-quakes have been put to use in a series of fun events for a ‘mental health’ week arranged by head girl, Tessa Donaldson, to ease exam stress. The money was raised by its sister Josephite school, St Joseph’s Catholic College in East Gosford, New South Wales.

Festivities were in full swing as residents gathered to celebrate this year’s Neighbourhood Week at Packe St Park.
The annual city council event is held from Friday, October 24 to Sunday, November 2, to encourage as many communities as possible to participate in a celebration of neighbourhood events.
To help facilitate the events, the city council’s community boards supported those running the events and activities with a small subsidy.
The Shirley-Papanui Commu-nity Board provided more than $3500 for 34 events in the area.
Last Thursday, 20 residents attended an afternoon tea at the park.
The community board provided Packe St event organiser, Peggy Kelly, with $60 to purchase food and drink for the afternoon event.
Two tables were set with fruit-cake, homemade biscuits and tea and coffee for guests.
Mrs Kelly has been running the Packe St Park for more than 16 years.
In 1995 the city council pur-chased the reserve.
But with no money for rede-velopment, the community was forced to adopt a ‘working bee’ scheme to maintain the park.
St Albans Residents Association co-chairwoman, Emma Twaddell, said Mrs Kelly had done a lot to
get the park to where it was.“Everyone has a connection
to St Albans. If any is looking to come garden here they would be welcome,” she said.
She said it was amazing to see how far the park had come, and understood how important it was to the community.
Packe St Park hosts a variety
of events throughout the year, including Christmas carols every December.
Volunteer Jan Mackenzie, said she visited the community garden and pickled everything she could.
“It’s lovely,” she said.“You meet all sorts here and
there is always someone to chat to,” she said.
One guest, Maria Wu, was visit-ing from Canada.
She said it was the fifth time she had come over to stay in the St Albans community, where she helped out with organic garden-ing.
Volunteers at the park ran a working bee every Thursday from 2–4pm.

•From page 1Crash records for the last 10
years showed 18 per cent of crash-es within the 80km/h zone of Marshland Rd were either fatal or serious injury, compared to only eight per cent in the 70km/h zone.
The road area was classified as “high risk” under the city council risk assessment programme data-base.
Shirley-Papanui Community Board deputy chairman, Aar-on Keown, said the changes in the area were not necessary but warned against the high hazard area where Marshland Rd inter-sected Belfast Rd.
“My mother was killed further up there where Marshland Rd forms Main North Rd, by boy rac-ers going excessively fast,” he said.
Mr Keown said even though this could have happened in any area, it was still an area which needed attention before more fa-talities were caused.
Speed limit changes would be resolved by the city council by December 1.

BY MARK THOMAS - FIRE RISK MANAGEMENT OFFICERLast week I reported about a life lost in a burn-off.
The very day I was writing that an injury occurred to a worker in Ouruhia when he tried to encourage a non-co-operative heap of tree slash with a can of petrol.
The result was a flash that quite severely burnt hands, arms and face of the operator.
Fire can be a useful tool but it can also hurt the user. Sometimes badly. Sometimes fatally. It deserves absolute respect.
Early on Tuesday morning someone set fire to a climbing frame in Burwood Park. The frame is there for the local kids.
So this is an attack on them. I’d assume parents in the area would be far from happy at the thoughtless, vandalistic actions
of someone who just doesn’t care.
The Fire Service now backs up the ambulance at some of their incidents. We’re useful for numbers, lifting ability and assistance to the experts in life saving.
We can also occasionally utilise our skills as at a Hornby rest home last week where a resident became totally entan-gled in her walking frame.
Firefighters with small tools
dismantled the frame and freed the occupant. I believe they then reconstructed the walker.
A fire in a ceiling in Pannell Ave, Wainoni, last Tuesday night was being extinguished by city fire crews when a car crashed into the fire truck. I’m not sure why.
They’re big, they’re red and they have flashing warning lights. Yet this one was still hit. No injuries thankfully.

Tania BostockTania Bostock has lived in Nelson for ten years. She has always had an interest in art, and because of the success of her paintings it was a natural progression to become a full-time Artist. The majority of my artworks for this exhibition are ultimately about connections and relationships. Each panel has been divided into two portions reflecting different elements, or relationships. When displayed as a group they could represent the different dynamics between people as a whole. Each unique in appearance, all have something beautiful to offer.

I source my materials from close to hand, as much as possible from the small farm I inherited from my parents in the middle Motueka River Valley.I use processes that are within my experience and if possible simple. Hand over tool, tool over machine, simple technology over higher technology. All rules are broken - some material comes from off site (e.g. paint, glue), some processes are complex and reliant on higher technology (e.g. band-saw, epoxy resin). The IvyStepping into The Ivy, Sumner’s
newest boutique store for gorgeous homewares, flowers and inspiring gifts and creations, is to step into
an airy oasis full of beautiful and practical objects for your home and garden.
The brainchild of three Sumner businesswomen, The Ivy is the evolution of their own design backgrounds. Sara Sutherland, Mary-Jane McCulloch and Karen Aitken all bring their own retail and commercial experience as well as individual creative flair to the store. The result is stunning – a lovely atmosphere drenched
in natural light with gifts and homeware displayed on unique shelving.
While the stock is constantly being updated, the emphasis is always on style and quality. They have sourced and hand-picked the items for sale from New Zealand, Australia, Sweden, the UK, Germany and France. These are not bulk-items made in soulless factories, but wonderful creations personally selected with an eye to beauty and substance.
New Zealand-made ceramics, wooden toys created using traditional craftsmanship techniques by Gepetto, of Alexandra, and
glassware from France rub shoulders with the owners’ own creations.
Acorn Designs is is the work of Mary-Jane and her business partner Annette Matheson, who produce individual classic pieces with ruffles and pockets in fabrics chosen by the client in just a three-day turnaround. Sara’s floral background ensures the store is filled with beautiful early summer flowers which can be bought by the stem, or can be turned into wonderful bouquets which can be delivered. The entrance to The Ivy is filled with landscape designer Karen’s work. Her topiaries can be bought from the store, or she can visit your home and work with you
to create just what you want. Coming soon will be Elk jewellery and
bags, and the friends are happy to listen to their customers’ ideas and requests for new products.
The Ivy has been a labour of love for Mary-Jane, Karen and Sara as well as their families, and their enthusiasm and joy is apparent in every aspect of this wonderful shop. Customers return again and again to see what treasures have been sourced and for all the additional services available.
Open seven days a week from 10am to 6pm, visit them at 55 Nayland Street, Sumner, or call on 03 326 6481.

for different hair types
Finding a great hairdresser that has the skills to create the best style for your hair type can be difficult, but at My Hair & Beauty the qualified
stylists all have their own area of expertise. My Hair & Beauty has two separate salons
– one for hair styling and the other for a range of beauty and massage treatments with Naomi including manicures and pedicures with Vinylux polishes that last longer than normal nail polish but can be easily removed. The beauty salon has recently acquired the beautiful French skin care range La Biosthetique which can be used together to suit different types of skin. Other services include eyelash and eyebrow tinting and waxing.
In the hair salon, Korean hairdresser Sue and Chisa from Japan have years of experience in many countries and now offer great services to all nationalities, while Kathy looks after the “senior girls”, says owner Wendy Philipse, who bought the salon in February last year. The other two stylists in the My Hair & Beauty team are Emma from Ireland and Wendy who both share a passion for colour and the importance of haircare.
The salon caters to men, women and children, with incredibly reasonable prices using Redken, L’Oreal, Pureology and GHD products.
Summer is the perfect time for adding lighter tones with foils or a full colour, and My Hair & Beauty also caters for the busy wedding season and special styles for the races or Christmas parties.
My Hair & Beauty is located in (busy) Peerswick Mall in the heart of Church Corner, just across from Bush Inn. The hairdressing salon is open Monday to Saturday from 9am until 5pm and on Thursdays until 8pm, while beauty and massage therapist Naomi works Tuesdays to Saturdays and also has a late night on Thursday.
To book your beauty appointment, telephone Wendy and the team at My Hair & Beauty on 348 2782, or visit their website at www.my-hair-and-beauty.co.nz.

A new health & beauty store you will loveBrett Heaney and his team at
Christchurch’s newest Homestead Health and Beauty outlet at The Palms are thrilled with their
brand-new store and its extensive range of products.
The store, which is located near Countdown in The Palms, opened on September 20, and is the third Homestead Health and Beauty in the city – the other two are at The Hub Hornby and the Bush Inn Centre, Upper Riccarton.
Store manager Debbie Coulter has already gained considerable experience in the natural health and beauty industry, having managed three health shops in Wellington. She is assisted by Jenny Pierce, who previously worked at the original Homestead Health and Beauty in New Brighton. Jenny says, many former customers from that store have been very pleased to find the new store at The Palms.
With their qualifications and experience, Debbie and Jenny ensure that customers will benefit from their knowledge and expertise in all aspects of natural health and beauty, and they offer friendly, professional advice
on the most suitable products for people’s health and skin care needs.
“We have one of the largest ranges of natural health and beauty products in Christchurch, which includes our very popular everyday specials on some of our most popular items, for example, fish oil, glucosamine and protein powders in our sport zone section,” Debbie says.
New Homestead Health and Beauty, The Palms, Shirley, located next to Lotto shop, Countdown end, phone 385 0364.
Homestead Health and Beauty, The Hub Hornby, phone 349 5150.
Homestead Health and Beauty, The Bush Inn Centre, phone 348 7867.
“We look forward to building up a new customer base on this side of the city, and hope to develop strong relationships with everyone, from young families to mature adults, as the other Homestead Health and Beauty stores have done.”
Another benefit for customers is the long-established loyalty club, which rewards them with discounts and special offers. All three Homestead Health and Beauty stores offer an exceptional shopping experience, as has been demonstrated in recent customer satisfaction survey responses, which showed that 100 per cent of customers were “extremely happy” with the services offered.
“We welcome the opportunity to meet with you at The Palms store, and assist in helping you improve your health.”

weight loss
An extract of a small pumpkin-like fruit called Garcinia cambogia from India
and Asia has shown itself to greatly assist weight management and overall health. In fact, many have found it to increase fat loss by two to three times greater than normal. Even The Dr. Oz Show on television noted it is the most effective and fastest working natural supplement to support weight loss.
Even without exercise and diet changes, many have found it beneficial although even better and quicker results are often obtained with extra exercise and an improved diet.
The extract of this amazing fruit is called hydroxycitric acid (HCA) or CitriMax. Research has shown HCA to help suppress the appetite, reduce cravings, feel fuller for longer, increase energy levels, help prevent fat from being made and stored in the body, increase lean muscle mass, increase serotonin levels
itn the brain that help control mood and sleep (great for emotional eaters), improve cholesterol levels that may help reduce the chances of strokes and cardiovascular disease, help prevent sugar spikes as well as other health benefits.
It is considered a very safe supplement (although check first if you are on medication) as it has been used for centuries as a flavouring agent and digestive aid.
To obtain reliable results, it is important to take a product that contains a standardised extract of 60 per cent HCA and also take the recommended amount as used in the clinical research. Some supplements also contain ChromeMate, a well-researched form of niacin-bound chromium to help improve the results even more.
For further advice, visit Marshall’s Health & Natural Therapy at 110 Seaview Road, New Brighton or call at phone 388 5757.
Belly fatExcessive fat accumulation around the belly not
only affects the way you look but increases the risk for diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, cancer and stroke. This fat accumulation can
lead to early death. The good news is belly fat (abdominal fat) can be
reduced fairly easily and this may reduce the chance of serious disease.
Exercising regularly, drinking plenty of pure water,
increasing fibre intake, reducing or eliminating sugar, reducing carbohydrate intake, having smaller meals regularly and having more protein with each meal can make a difference.
The right supplements may also improve results considerably for many people.
Garcinia cambogia (Super CitriMax) provides hydroxycitric acid (HCA) that researchers have found to help stop fat being made and stored in the body. It is also effective at suppressing the appetite, reducing cravings and keeping you feeling fuller for longer. For effective results it should be taken 45 to 60 minutes before each meal.
SafSlim is a product that has been shown in one study to reduce belly fat up to six times faster over a 16-week period while at the same time increasing lean muscle. One tablespoon of the great tasting syrup should be taken twice a day before meals. It is recommended to be used for a minimum of 16 weeks.
Replacing one or two meals a day with a high protein meal replacement drink has been found to be a very effective way of reducing weight quickly for many people. It seems with regular protein intake the body starts to use up fat stores.
A daily fibre drink and a lower bowel tonic can help improve weight loss and is also a great way of improving your health. A cider vinegar drink can improve digestion, overall health and the metabolic rate and has been found also to be very beneficially for weight loss.

Camper Care NZ Motorhome & Caravan Show
Now in its eighth year, if you thought the South Island Camper Care NZ Motorhome & Caravan Show - taking place at the newly renamed
Horncastle Arena in Christchurch from November 7 to 9 – is all about motorhomes and caravans, it certainly is but there’s also so much more to see and do over show weekend.
There will be a host of highlights including recent Masterchef NZ 2014 contestants Nikki and Jordan Shearer cooking up a storm at the Inspiration in the Kitchen cooking classes. Top 10 Holiday Parks will be again be hosting the free-of-charge Top 10 Rally for those wanting to stay the weekend and catch up with their fellow motorhome adventurers.
Other show favourites will include The Bucket List Travel Zone, where you’ll be able to find out information on the perfect region to visit, camping grounds or events to enjoy while travelling, along with the Traillite Seminar Series, a number of free seminars showcasing top tips, from buying a motorhome to making the most of your retirement.
Introduced for the first time last year, the Geraldine Classic Caravan Club will also be back again, showcasing a range of pre-70s classic caravans in the ‘Walk Down Memory Lane’ area of the show.

MONEY
A recent survey conducted by Colmar Brunton for the Financial Markets Authority shows that many New Zea-landers do not understand investment risk (see www.fma.govt.nz).
The survey results paint a picture of investors who show a reasonably good understanding of more conservative investments, which offer security and a reliable return, but lack un-derstanding of higher-risk growth investments such as property and shares.
Just under two thirds of respondents preferred more conservative investments, while only around a third were prepared to see the value of their investments go up and down in order to get the best return. The implica-tion is that lack of familiar-ity with growth investments leads investors to avoid them and, in so doing, they are not giving themselves
the opportunity to learn about them.
Fear and ignorance are confining investors to lower-risk, lower-return invest-ments. There is a danger that those with a lack of under-standing will make poor decisions.
Investor education is one way to solve these problems but this is easier said than done. Whose role is it to find investors and engage with them to improve their understanding of invest-ments and risk? If investors are comfortable with more conservative investments what will motivate them to learn about alternative investment opportunities?
There is potential for KiwiSaver to be a good learning tool. KiwiSaver providers offer a range of investment options with dif-
fering risk profiles. Investing in KiwiSaver
should be treated like any other investment. It is important for the investor to determine the most appro-priate balance between risk and return, to understand the different investment options and to monitor the performance. As KiwiSaver balances grow, investors will increase their familiar-ity with investing in higher risk assets for the benefit of higher returns.

It’s simply amatter ofstretching your targets
RussellBellBUSINESS ZEN
IT’STHEMIDDLE of Juneand 50 per cent of the yearis already almost behindus. Time flies when you are
having fun and, for many of us,that’s what this time of year isabout—with the ski seasonalmost here and others lookingfor winter escapes. It’s also a good time to look
ahead and plan for futuresuccess. Strategic planning isan essential component ofsuccessful business and I havetwo plans— one formyself andone for the business— both areintertwined.Formany of us, our
businesses are a reflection ofourselves, so it makes sensethat whenwe plan for ourbusiness(es), they reflect ourown goals and ambitions. So, what are you going to
achieve for the remainder ofthis year? What are yourtargets? Are you going to letlife happen or take astructured approach? It’s important that you set
goals for yourself and yourbusiness that energise, motivate, aremeasurable andattainable. However, you
shouldmake sure that you alsoset some stretch targets. My personal plan includes
revampingmy fitness and hasmany stretches . . . and stretchtargets! I have resolved toexercise at least three times aweek. I did start this columnwith the ‘‘time flies’’ statement, but it seems that in that fitnesstime, I can create an ability toslow time significantly or stopit entirely. So I am going to dust off the
previously unused stepmachine at home. And I will seta goal of ‘‘stepping’’ aparticular distance each day.Given that the garage isn’twarm, there is incentive to getmotivated. The stretch target is to
make this activity daily. OK,not much of a stretch, but rightnow I am about as fit as a BigMac is nutritious.
The key to stretch targets isthat they do just that; theystretch you to new levels ofperformance and, likemuscleswhen you exercise, you andyour business develop newstrengths as you achieve them.I know it won’t be easy—
particularly starting fromscratch— but I want to beexercising every day if I can. Sowhat do you dowhen thingsget toughwhen pursuing agoal? Instead of giving up, youget energised. And although itis a stretch, I believe it isattainable.Oncemy fitness returns, it
will be a goal achieved, and Iwill have developedmoreconfidence andwill feel bettertoo. It’s the same for goal setting
and strategic planning— setyour targets so you knowwhere you are going andinclude some stretch targets. The benefits to you and yourbusiness will be exponential.■ If you would like helpimplementing stretch targetsinto your strategic plan, giveZenith Solutions a call on 3479997.
Get goodadvice beforeinvesting overseas
It is not uncommon for NewZealanders to have overseasinvestments.Examplesmight be shares in
foreign companies, foreign unittrust investments, foreignsuperannuation schemes andforeign life insurance policies. There are some pitfalls in leaving
these investments overseas. If your overseas investments
have a value greater than $50,000,they could well be liable for tax inNew Zealand. This is called aForeign Investment Fund (FIF) tax. There are a number of options youcan choose from as to to calculate itand youwill need help from anaccountant or financial adviser.Certain overseas investments,
particularly Australian ones, areexempt from FIF tax.Under current NZ law, an
overseas adviser who providesinvestment advice to a NZ residentmust be an Authorised FinancialAdviser (AFA) as determined in theFinancial Advisers Act.Australian advisersmay in some
circumstances be exempt from this
requirement. Exemptions also applyto wholesale investors, for examplethose whose investment assets are$1million ormore. If, for example, you have a share
portfolio of around £200,000 in theUK onwhich personalisedinvestment advice is provided by abroker, the broker will be in breachof the Financial Advisers Act if he orshe is not registered as an AFA inNZ. Youwill not have the protectionof the code of conduct, disclosurerequire-ments anddisputeresolutionschemesthat aremandatoryfor AFAs.Finally,
having assets in currenciesother than the New Zealand dollarwill expose you to exchange raterisk.Obtaining advice from aNew
Zealand accountant or financialadviser on the implications ofleaving investment assets overseasis highly recommended.

Super Sales AchieverWe are seeking a super sales person to join our sales team.
With the Christchurch market very strong in the building and home market, the opportunities for advertising sales are very exciting.
Ideally applicants will have previous experience in media sales (but this is not essential), and we encourage anyone who believes they have the ability and passion to build advertising relationships and build on the success of these brands to apply. We are seeking a dedicated organized person with a determination to succeed.
Applicants should be able to work to targets and budgets, be able to build long-term sustainable relationships with our customers, build new business, and be an “ideas’’ person working in a team environment.
Remuneration and employment conditions are excellent.
The successful applicant will be based at The Christchurch Star Company located in central Christchurch.
The Christchurch Star Company is a diversified media business. Our flagship The Star is one of the country’s largest newspapers by circulation and the country’s only free metropolitan newspaper. The company also publishes six community newspapers, several lifestyle and trading magazines and award winning feature publications. Our growing online presence includes digital editions of all our newspapers, websites and New Zealand’s largest media facebook community. The company also organises two of the city’s most iconic annual events, The Star City 2 Surf and The Star Home and Leisure Show.
If you are a confident person seeking a challenge and are prepared to work under pressure but enjoy the rewards, you will love this opportunity.
Applications will be processed on a rolling basis until filled, so if this is of interest please send in your CV promptly.

At the helm of the kitchen is Chef Paulo. Formerly of Michaels Restaurant, his cuisine reflects fine dining. Making the most of new season produce, Chef Paulo has created a fresh new menu that is modestly priced considering the high quality ingredients used and outstanding presentation of dishes.
Since opening in March, North New Brighton’s The Bower / Urban Corner Cafe Restaurant complex has received rave reviews for it’s innovative modern cuisine and industrial chic design. Constructed from shipping containers, a common response from new patrons is that the exterior does not do justice to the wealth of treasure within. The interior is stunning, and really must be seen to be appreciated.
Also launched is a separate $20 menu that is available daily in the adjoining Bower bar.

Unique shops, top chain stores and department stores are shoulder-to-shoulder in the area, and the choice means
there is something to suit all styles and tastes, shapes and ages.
Some stores have been catering for the Cup Week customers for decades. Quinn’s has been at its current location since 1976. Their stylish new store frontage is a reflection of the type of elegant and classy garments available inside. It has become a landmark shopping destination in its own right for Cantabrians, especially at this time of the year.
Other clothing stores include Kimberley’s, Dfusion, DEVaL, JNBY, Plume and the now established, taylor. Together, they can offer customers beautiful garments and accessories from international and home-grown designers, ensuring a phenomenal choice and a greatly reduced chance of two people wearing the same outfit to the races! As always, the Merivale shopper can be guaranteed clothing where the emphasis is on quality, cut, flair and originality. Even pregnant race-goers are catered for at Pregoli.
Accessories make an outfit, especially shoes. Briarwood, Ziera, Andrea Biani and Sergios and more have a range of fabulous shoes to complement any look.
The races is a chance for fashion-forward men to shine, too. Stores such as 3 Wise Men, Colombus & Ware, Working Style and Sergios offer a range of suits, shirts and other essentials to put together a stylish outfit guaranteed to stand out from the crowd.
Now well into its second year, the association represents a collaboration between local businesses, the Merivale
community and residents’ associations.
Maarten Loefen, of Traiteur of Merivale, is a key figure in the association, and is proud of its recent achievements.
Their website will launch soon, on target for the summer, and is the result of funding and support from Harvey Cameron Advertising, E2 Digital, Nurse Maude and the Merivale Precinct Association. The
scope of the website has evolved and the Precinct Association’s input means that it will represent the whole community as well as businesses, and local people will be able to contribute. The Fendalton and Waimari Community Board are also involved and will help with incorporating a useful map for visitors to the site.
Maarten explains that the group has been busy working with the City Council on the planters outside shops, which are a feature of the area. Thanks to their hard work, the plants will be relocated and replanted with plenty of foliage at the base to keep the plants moist and healthy. The planters enhance Merivale, and as the suburb continues to rebuild, touches like the planters add to the positive, vibrant atmosphere of the neighbourhood.
Another project well underway is one aimed at lighting up the streets and not just for Christmas. The Merivale Business Association and Community Group is working with potential investors and developing a plan to make Merivale an attractive and safe area in the evening when the bars, pubs and restaurants are full.
With so much going on, the forthcoming website will certainly be a useful tool for the association, the residents, the business owners and visitors. Look out for www.merivale.info very soon.
Cup feverThe biggest fashion week in Canterbury
is coming up fast - Cup Week is just around the corner, and the high-end
boutiques in Merivale are gearing up for one of their busiest times of the year.

Christchurch’s property market must be the most unique in the nation at the moment. Tony Jenkins, CEO of Harcourts Holmwood, has been
in real estate for 27 years, and is aware of the distinctive situation that faces those buying and selling property in this post-earthquake environment.
The Christchurch market remains very strong with buyers competing for property. In the past month in Merivale, there were 20 sales and the median sales price was $630,000.
The general shortage of homes in Christchurch and the fact that spring is in the air both provide a positive platform for the sales going forward.
Auction remains a preferred method of sale for many vendors due to its transparent and clear-cut nature. The number of auctions being called is on the rise and strong bidding is prevalent in the auction rooms.
In a market like this, it is important for sellers and buyers to have a good understanding of the true market value of property. Harcourts Holmwood can point their clients in the right direction for all
advice regarding the buying and selling process.
They offer the full range of real estate services and the experienced, knowledgeable and professional team is on hand to guide clients through this unusual time in the city’s real estate market.

BMW X6 - A CAPABLE MACHINE
When BMW launched its sport activity coupe, the X6, I wasn’t convinced its shape would catch on.
Well BMW has proved me wrong and, what’s more, the company has launched a smaller car with a similar shape – the X4.
Both cars sit in an almost stand-alone category. They aren’t your normal SUV fare given their coupe-like look, however, they are both four-wheel-drive and function as an SUV should.
Which is why BMW describes the car as a sport activity model, it isn’t a true cross-country charger but it is a capable machine if you want to access the ski field or take the family into the high-country lake for a camping holiday.
Like all BMW models, the X4 is loaded with kit for safety, comfort and convenience. If you want extras, there’s a lot of specification which can be ordered into the car.
Just because the X4 is smaller in stature than the X6, it doesn’t mean comfort has been compromised. It is a mid-size car which makes good use of its proportions, rear seat occupants have ample leg and headroom, and for three across the back, it isn’t too much of squeeze widthwise. The test car was leather trimmed and seat comfort is high, especially up front.
Interestingly, the X4 gets some of the same running gear as the X6. In the test car’s case, it was fitted with the venerable straight six,
3-litre, turbocharged, diesel engine along with a paddleshift, eight-speed, automatic transmission.
I’ve experienced that engine combination in several BMWs and would rate it as my favourite.
BMW claims power outputs of 230KW and 630 Nm, these are high outputs. Consequently, the X4 feels strong; there’s always a feeling of willingness through the accelerator. If you look at the acceleration figures – 5.2 seconds to make 100km/h per hour from a standstill, 4sec to reach 120km/h from 80km/h and a 247km/h top speed – the X4 is no slouch.
It rates the double camshaft unit with a six-litre per 100km/h (47mpg) combined cycle average. During my testing time, the fuel usage readout was listing around 8l/100km (35mpg) on average along with a 6.6l/100km (43mpg) figure cruising the highway at 100km/h (engine speed just 1450rpm).
These are amazing figures given the X4’s performance potential while journeys of considerable distance can be made between fill-ups.
When it comes to tackling the quick corners, the X4 feels firmly planted. BMW has engineered spring and damper rates which are a blend of what is required for
comfort along with the firming needed to control body movement in a corner. That balance has been well achieved; gravitational transition is controlled while suspension movement is supple enough to absorb the uneven surfaces, yet provide the chassis feel that is requested in challenging corners.
The X4 lands here in just two models, there’s a 2-litre, four-cylinder diesel as well. The test car was the range-topper at $129,900; while this represents a sizeable outlay, if you take into account its style, presence and level of specification, it is a desirable car.
And it would certainly appear that its design shape is tempting buyers. I’ve seen a lot of X6s recently, I’m sure the X4 will be just as popular.

“We have a team of professionals that are involved in the whole process,” he says.
“We have a qualified quantity surveyor, who does the pricing and prepares fully detailed progress reports on claims once a month, which the client receives. We have an independent professional programmer who prepares a timeline schedule from start date to completion, including all the critical paths that need to be followed.
“This is monitored every four weeks so everyone involved, including the client, knows exactly where we’re at as the job progresses.”
The team also has fortnightly site meetings, with the agenda for each meeting being sent to everyone involved in the
project, including the client, in advance. The minutes from the meeting are then sent to the client within 24 hours so they know what was discussed, Colin says.
Gregg Builders works with all the leading architects in Christchurch and specialises in building high-end homes for clients in
the Merivale/Fendalton areas. The interior designers and landscapers they use are all highly skilled professionals and the sub-contractors they use are the same ones they have used for many years, Colin says.
“I am very proud of our team and the work they do and I wouldn’t change a single person.”
Gregg Builders has been in business for three generations, having been established in 1939 by George Gregg. The family tradition looks like continuing into the

We bring all projects in on time and on budget, and we look forward to building many more architecturally designed homes in this part of town,” Colin says.

We spoke with local landscape designer Craig Wilson for some key tips to consider in creating an outdoor oasis for
the summer months ahead.
Often about now, we stand back and look again at the outdoor projects we’d put on the back burner in favour of sitting by the fire with a good book. If you’re considering that new deck, patio, paving or BBQ area, here are a couple of key points that may help you in your planning.
Sun and wind
How your house and section orientate to ‘north’ determines where the sun and wind is the greatest. Outdoor spaces are typically best positioned to capture afternoon sun in a northwest aspect. Careful consideration also needs to be given to ensure you factor in protection from the infamous cooler ‘easterly’ wind that plagues much of Canterbury.
Recently, I have also noticed more of my clients are requesting provision for shade structures. Quality umbrellas, awnings or shade sails may be good options depending on your budget.
outdoor oasisCreate your
Indoor / outdoor flow
This is more than just a term for real estate magazines. Well planned indoor/outdoor flow can create seamless continuity between your indoor and outdoor living. This is particularly relevant when you are planning a space for your outdoor dining as a good connection between your kitchen and outdoor setting can work well.
Architecture
The most successful outdoor spaces are often ones that have been designed in reference to the house. Analyse the architectural style of your home and then see how these principles can be applied in the landscape. Using the materials of your house in the built elements of your outdoor areas is a great way of creating a ‘readable’ connection, i.e. a painted plaster finish raised planter that matches the finish of your exterior cladding.
You could also consciously choose to make a contrasting statement with your landscape elements if you are a bit braver.
The above principles must all be considered and applied in a way that suits you and
the way you choose to enjoy and use your outdoor areas. The selected plant palette is a great chance for you to express yourself in the garden. Your choices don’t have to be ‘on trend’ and it doesn’t have to appeal to anyone else. With some considered thought and planning, your outdoor spaces will become a true lifestyle asset that you will enjoy for many long hot summer afternoons and evenings to come.
Spring is a great time in Christchurch as the days lengthen, the temperature warms and our gardens
wake up after the cold of winter.

Merivale Mall Fashion Show on October 23. Leading labels and boutiques were represented by the girls and guys on the runway to the delight of the audience.
Not only a showcase for the latest trends in fine dressing, the show and auction was also a fundraiser for the Cancer Society.
Following the event, guests had the opportunity to browse the shops in the mall and hunt out the garments they had just seen.

With motivation and strategies, all goals can be accomplished. Motivation can be a funny thing. Some people envision
miraculously waking up with it, others believe it can be gifted from someone else. There are an abundance of fad diets and ineffective exercise options available, pushing for fast and easy results, yet obesity and associated health issues continue to rise. The health and fitness industry is beginning to recognise the importance of an holistic approach, one that entails a person’s mental, physical and emotional wellbeing.
What drives any one of us is unique to the individual. Your own personal goals, be they training for a specific event, increasing your fitness levels or simply feeling and looking fabulous in your Cup Day outfit, will be more achievable if you are clear on what your own goals are.
To get what we truly want from life, and
to be able to incorporate changes that are manageable, even through those lulls, it’s important to recognise your priorities.
Once our motivation is set, the way to achieve our goals is to put a strategy in place. Being creatures of habit, we can take advantage of this and implement a routine by planning the week ahead. Use your phone or diary to make a list and set reminders. Looking at your week from Monday to Sunday, note down the times you’re likely to be busy and allocate quick and easy meals for busier nights and more adventurous dishes for when you have time to enjoy the process. Then draw or stick pictures of the physical activity you’re planning to do, and at the end of each week reflect back on your successes and develop strategies for times when things didn’t go to plan.
Implementing change is easy with the right motivation and a method to achieve it.

Jenni Rolton and her son Jarod have taken over the Harcourts Holmwood St Albans office, with Jarod as manager and Jenni focusing on helping clients
buy and sell properties.
Jarod has been working in real estate for eight years and brings a solid understanding of the demands facing salespeople to his new management role. His knowledge is based on his own experiences in sales and watching his mother’s career progress while he was growing up.
Jenni, who has spent 30 years in real estate, describes her latest role as “part of the circle of life”.
Working in a sector where location is everything, she says she is excited about working out of the Harcourts Holmwood office at 74 Edgeware Road.
Real estate office now a family business
“Edgeware Village is going to undergo so much change, such as cobbled streets and new cafés. It certainly is an up and coming location.”
Jenni and Jarod say despite a new location, their loyal clients can be assured of receiving the same great service they have come to know and expect, with colleagues Michael Faulkner and Chrissy Bird joining them at the St Albans office.
Jenni’s passion for real estate is as strong now as when she started out three decades ago. “Because I’m committed to going the extra mile, I’m relishing this new opportunity to focus purely on buying and selling.
“The market continues to be vibrant in most sectors, with buyers eager to settle. Week in and week out, we are continually seeing strong competition in our auction rooms, not only from local residents but also from those who are here for the long term for the rebuild. It is very pleasing to see developers keen to secure land, especially in L2 and L3 zoning, which will help cater for the demand.”
What is understood to be Christchurch’s only mother-and-son real estate partnership is
undergoing a reversal in roles.
The country calls our owners, and having found their next home, it is now time to say farewell to 1 Kelson Lane which they have cherished.
Being north-facing, the home captures all-day sun with the living areas opening to the deck and a secure established garden - just perfect for summertime living.
Separate living areas interconnect, providing generous space for larger gatherings but the perfect layout to be able to find your own ‘space’.
The main bedroom with en suite is on the ground floor with two additional double rooms upstairs.
Many benefits are on offer here with ducted heating, tasteful neutral decor and all EQC work completed.
A very popular location in an enclave of modern homes, being close to all amenities
A popular location
of Bush Inn Centre and easy access to Canterbury University.
Buy with confidence where the land is zoned TC1.
Our owner’s commitment to sell is very genuine and necessary. Don’t miss out!
Open Homes: Saturday and Sunday, 2pm to 2.30pm.
