The Requiem is an absolute marvelous compilation of liturgical texts to honor and pray for the souls of the dead. Composers through the centuries had found inspiration in the exu- berant reconciliation between death and eternal life of souls expressed by the texts. Probably every major composer of every cultural movement has written or participated in the creation of some type of Mass for the Dead (Latin: Missa pro defunctis) regardless of their involvement in the Faith. It is imperative to recognize that the beauty and spirituality contained in Requiem Mass lyrics and music has enhanced the power of the word allowing people to find comfort and tran- quility. This, in turn, contributes to a life with God and for God, and leads to the soul’s vitam aeternam. The first Requiem Mass in modern era was written by Johannes Ockeghem sometime in the XV century. In the Re- naissance Golden Age of Acapel- la Sacred Music, the XVI century, more and more com- posers set the Requiem Mass as a standard piece for sacred choral music. With the develop- ment of instrumental music during the following centuries, the Requiem Mass also involved into a more complex structural composition. Certainly, it is necessary to mention one of the most famous Requiems in the history of sacred music, but also probably one of the most notori- ous and popular pieces of Classi- cism, the Requiem in D minor by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Even Though he did not finish the entire piece because of his death, he did structure most of the parts, which were later completed by his student Franz Xaver Sussmayr. With the tri- umph of emotion over structure in the period of Romanticism, it is in- evitable to mention the beautiful Requiems written by Johannes Brahms, Anton Bruck- ner and Giuseppe Verdi. With grandiloquent solos and exuberant displays of unconven- tional harmonies, these “romantic” composers resumed the inevitable evolution of spiritual music into a more elevated form of art. OCTOBER 27, 2019 30TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

NOTES FROM ERNESTO ALVAREZ-RAMIREZ— Choir Director

I n light of next week’s Solemnity of All Saints

(Nov 1st) followed by All Saints (Nov 2nd) I would like to say a few things about the history, spirituality, and origin of Requi-em Mass. The Requiem is an absolute marvelous compilation of liturgical texts to honor and pray for the souls of the dead. Composers through the centuries had found inspiration in the exu-berant reconciliation between death and eternal life of souls expressed by the texts. Probably every major composer of every cultural movement has written or participated in the creation of some type of Mass for the Dead (Latin: Missa pro defunctis) regardless of their involvement in the Faith. It is imperative to recognize that the beauty and spirituality contained in Requiem Mass lyrics and music has enhanced the power of the word allowing people to find comfort and tran-quility. This, in turn, contributes to a life with God and for God,

and leads to the soul’s vitam aeternam.

The first Requiem Mass in modern era was written by Johannes Ockeghem sometime in the XV century. In the Re-naissance Golden Age of Acapel-la Sacred Music, the XVI century, more and more com-posers set the Requiem Mass as a standard piece for sacred

choral music. With the develop-ment of instrumental music during the following centuries, the Requiem Mass also involved into a more complex structural composition. Certainly, it is necessary to mention one of the most famous Requiems in the

history of sacred music, but also probably one of the most notori-ous and popular pieces of Classi-cism, the Requiem in D minor by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Even Though he did not finish the entire piece because of his death, he did structure most of the parts, which were later completed by his student Franz Xaver Sussmayr. With the tri-

umph of emotion over structure in the period of Romanticism, it is in-evitable to mention the beautiful Requiems written by Johannes Brahms, Anton Bruck-ner and Giuseppe Verdi. With grandiloquent solos and exuberant displays of unconven-tional harmonies, these “romantic” composers resumed the inevitable evolution of spiritual

music into a more elevated form of art. These are the composers who influenced Gabriel Fauré, part of whose Requiem we are presenting at our evening All Saint Mass.

Romanticists: responsible for the transformation of music structure and the pioneering of the contemporary movement of the XX century. With an exaltation of the emotion behind the words, characteristic of this generation of choral sacred music, Fauré’s Requiem in D minor is no excep-tion! The elevation of the Requiem forms to exuberant and vibrant pieces, is a reminder of the extraordinary and eternal capacity of the word of God to inspire beauty. The part of Fauré’s Requiem which we will sing is called: Libera me, probably the clearest example of the humble reconciliation between the death of the physical flesh and the eternal life of the soul. In my opinion, Fauré really mastered the relation between emotion and “Thy Word’ creating a solemn atmosphere yet expressing hope and comfort at the same time. Listening to this chant with an open heart, is an experience that can transform your fears and insecurities into a deeper connection with the Creator. After all, a life with God and for God, always leads to a soul’s vitam aternam.

Knight of the Month - In Memoriam

A tribute from Patricia Dawson…….Tom has been

the love of my life since I was 19 years old.

I miss him so very much. He loved his Catholic

faith, he loved God. He loved Jesus, Mary and

Joseph. He really enjoyed volunteering back when

he was a bit healthier. He sold Christmas cards

for the Knights of Columbus, he supplied the bot-

tled water for the OSP Labor Day festivals for many years. He

and our son, Jack, kept the festival grounds grass mowed for

a few years. He sold raffle tickets for our kids school (Spiritus

Sanctus) and for the OSP Labor Day Festival. He sold so much

that I think people didn't want to see the Dawson's coming

anymore. He really loved being active in the community and

at home always finding a project around the house. The past

few years he wasn't able to do much. He has just been suffer-

ing too much with health complications.

He loves me and I love him. I don't know how to live without

him, but with God's Grace, I will figure it out.

Old St. Patrick would like to invite you to celebrate the Solemnity of All Saints with music and a procession to the cemetery immediately following the Mass in anticipation of All Souls. Our choir will debut two new motets in honor of the faithful departed: Jesu! Rex Admirabilils and Sicut Cervus by the prolific Renaissance composer of Sacred Polyphony: Giovanni Palestrina. Sicut Cervus, set to the first words of Psalm 42: 'As the deer thirsts for streams of water, so my soul longs for you my God' expresses spiritual yearning. Jesu! Rex Admirabilis is based on the hymn to the Sacred Name by St. Bernard Clairvaux (d 1153)

The choir will intone "Libera Me" from Requiem in D minor by Gabriel Faure for the procession to the cemetery.

Experience the Beauty of Sacred Polyphony and Chant

Adoration will begin at 9pm

November 1st, 7pm

Come honor the dead and celebrate the saints!

Father Tom,

Thank you for answering the call of your vocation and bringing the light of Christ to us! ~ Parishioners of Old Saint Patrick
