Mercy This Week
Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Yet again in Ordinary Time, Jesus seems to
demand extraordinary commitment. A would-be
disciple enthusiastically volunteers to follow Jesus
“wherever”(Luke 9:57). Jesus replies that “wherever”
means “nowhere to rest his head” (9:58). To other
candidates, Jesus brusquely denies reasonable requests
to fulfill family obligations (9:59, 61), declaring that
discipleship demands total commitment—now! But
Jesus also demands that we not judge how others
respond. When James and John volunteered to “call
down fire from heaven” (9:54) to destroy an unwelcom-
ing town, Jesus “turned and rebuked them” (9:55). All
violence of any kind is completely unacceptable among
Jesus’ disciples, a lesson this Jubilee Year of Mercy is
teaching the Christian community once again. Paul’s
challenge to the Galatians and us reinforces Jesus’ deci-
sive command to James and John that they express their
commitment to him through compassion for others. We
must abandon the violence of “biting and devouring one
another” (Galatians 5:15), choosing instead to “serve
one another through love”. (5:13)

Reflection question:
If all violence of any kind is unacceptable, what
needs to change in your life? What judgmental
attitudes will you abandon? How will you serve
others with love?

YOUR CONTRIBUTION TO THE
ARCHBISHOP’S APPEAL GOES TO HELP:
Hospital Ministry–
The Pastoral Care, Hospital Ministry serves two
trauma hospitals within the archdiocese: University
Hospital and Baptist Medical Center. The ministers
provide regular and emergency pastoral visits to
those hospitalized. They also provide Catholic
support for staff and those involved with patient
care. The Hospital Ministry brings Eucharist to
patients and offer prayer support for encourage-
ment and comfort. Blessed rosaries and Catholic
pamphlets are distributed and Reconciliation is
available. Mass is celebrated each Sunday and the
ministry sponsors a Rosary Prayer Group each
Wednesday.

Thank You!
My thanks to my parish family for all the prayers
and good thoughts that are coming my way as I
continue to recuperate from a ‘knock-me-off my
socks’ bout with Klebsiella Pneumonia that kept
me in the hospital for three weeks. My breathing,
stamina, and strength are steadily improving but
I still have a way to go. It is a humbling and
enriching experience to know so many care.
Thanks again,
Kathy Matalik
THANK YOU!
The Catholic Daughters of the Americas would
like to express our deepest appreciation for your
continued support. During the month of May
we collected a total of $908.30 for Fr. Peyton's
"Change Your Change Into Rosaries". Thank
you again for your generous donations.
