On this 2 nd Sunday of Easter, known as DIVINE MERCY SUNDAY, we celebrate God’s “greatest attribute,” His Mercy. In the 1930s, the Risen Lord appeared to Sr. Faustina Kowalska, a nun in Krakow, Poland. He asked her to have a painting created which would show Him as He appeared to her: two rays, white and red, emanating from His Sacred Heart, with the words “Jesus, I trust in you!” on the bottom of the image. This has become known as the image of “Divine Mercy.” In the Gospel this week, we are told that when Thomas doubted, the merciful Lord Jesus showed Thomas His wounds: He said to Thomas, ‘Put your finger here and see my hands, and bring your hand and put it into my side, and do not be unbelieving, but believe.’” (John, 20: 27) This tender response reminds us how merciful Jesus is with those of us who at times doubt or fear. When we doubt in the power of the Resurrection to give us the peace and joy God wants for us, Jesus invites us to touch His wounds and trust in Him. We touch the wound in His side, from which water and blood flowed, in the sacraments of Baptism and the Holy Eucharist (represented by the white and red rays in the Divine Mercy image.) We touch the nail marks in His hands when we humbly confess our sins in the Sacrament of Confession, through which all sins, no matter how disgusting, are washed away in the ocean of His mercy. On this 2nd Sunday of Easter, known as DIVINE MERCY SUNDAY,

we celebrate God’s “greatest attribute,” His Mercy.

God generously pours out His saving grace, through the pierced heart of His Divine Son, to wash away every sin and all that prevents us from trusting Him and knowing His infinite love. This has become known as the image of “Divine Mercy.” In the Gospel this week, we are told that when Thomas doubted, the merciful Lord Jesus showed Thomas His wounds: “He said to Thomas, ‘Put your finger here and see my hands, and bring your hand and put it into my side, and do not be unbelieving, but believe.’” (John, 20: 27) This tender response reminds us how merciful Jesus is with those of us who at times doubt or fear. When we doubt in the power of the Resurrection to give us the peace and joy God wants for us, Jesus invites us to touch His wounds and trust in Him. We touch the wound in His side, from which water and blood flowed, in the sacraments of Baptism and the Holy Eucharist (represented by the white and red rays in the Divine Mercy image.) We touch the nail marks in His hands when we humbly confess our sins in the Sacrament of Confession, through which all sins, no matter how disgusting, are washed away in the ocean of His mercy. the Holy Spirit. Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them, and whose sins you retain are retained.’” (John, 20: 22) We also touch His glorious wounds when we do works of mercy for those who are suffering. If we seek to touch our Lord’s wounds by faithfully participating in the sacraments, lovingly relieving the suffering of others, and, trustingly offering ourselves in union with Jesus’ suffering, we will more fully believe in our Lord’s resurrection. With St. Thomas, we can say, “My Lord and my God!” Trusting in God’s mercy, we look forward with great eagerness to the near future when you can once again touch the Risen Lord in the Sacraments! In honor of DIVINE MERCY SUNDAY, you are invited to participate in the devotion of the Chaplet of Divine Mercy that will be livestreamed on Facebook and YouTube starting at 3:00pm on Sunday, April 19. Prevention, Protection, Accountability April is Child Abuse Prevention Month The Diocese of Stockton affirms its commitment to provide a safe

environment for its children. Under the Chatter for the Protection of Children and Young People established by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) in 2002 the Diocese of Stockton has expanded its protection to include children of preschool age as well as vulnerable adults. While the Diocese of Stockton works year-round to prevent abuse, the month of April is designated as Child Abuse Prevention Month a time to be extra diligent in our duty to provide a safe environment for all members of our Church and our community. As members of the Church we value the prevention of abuse and the support of those who have been abused. It is important to be aware of the signs of abuse and report inappropriate behavior to the proper agencies. What's being done in the Diocese of Stockton to Prevent Abuse? We report all allegations of abuse directly to law enforcement. We have a Victim Assistance Coordinator, Cynthia Dragun, whose primary role is to provide resources to survivors for their healing journey. We train adults on how to maintain a safe environment by use of the Virtus online training program. We train minors in all parish religious education programs and in our Catholic schools to identify the warning signs of abuse and inappropriate behavior by use of the Circle of Grace program. We follow all Diocesan policies and procedures to create an environment of protection and healing.

"Luego dice a Tomás: “Acerca aquí tu dedo y mira mis manos; trae tu mano y métela en mi costado, y no seas incrédulo sino creyente.”
