Continued from front page Hambone’s acrylic paintings are bright and colorful and depict various cultures of African American, Cajun, White and very often, New Orleans inspired Jazz. His faceless characters allows those who view his work, to put the faces of people they can relate to, onto the characters on the can- vas. Shortly after Hambone began painting, his wife entered one of his earliest completions into an art com- petion in New York. He was in total disbelief when the call came telling him he had won “Best of Show” at the Manhattan International Art Competition. He has since held successful art shows across the country and has now added sculpting to his list of talents. His paintings and sculptures can be found in private collec- tions worldwide. He also has a cook book called “Hambone Folk Art & Recipes”. In his earliest paint- ings, one of his trademarks was a small Bluejay that would be discreetly placed somewhere in the painting. He later added a small, black cat that he calls E.J. This curious little feline con- tinues to be the distinguishing trademark of HAMBONE ART. A few years back, Hambone’s life made a drastic turn when he was struck by a crippling attack of arthritis. The disease soon ate away at his hip joints, forcing him into a wheelchair. Unable to work, he went to several doctors seeking answers that would allow him to literally get back on his feet. His Shreveport doctors had full case loads and he was put on waiting lists. Hambone asked his doctor to please help him find a doctor, somewhere, any- where, that could do a hip replacement. “My doctor called me and said he had located a doctor in North Central Louisiana that had agreed to take my case,” Hambone explained. That doctor was a Ruston orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Richard Ballard. “We hit it off at the very first meeting,” said Hambone who had to be helped out of his wheelchair in the doc- tor’s office on that first visit. “We had very simular personalities, were about the same height and weight, we just got along great!” Within a very short time the first very successful surgery was performed. After a healing period of approximately three months, the second sur- gery was scheduled and the second hip was replaced. When Hambone returned for his fol- low-up visit, Dr. Ballard asked his patient about his future plans. Upon learning that Hambone was a Pit Master, Ballard told him about his build- ing that he had available in Bernice. Plans began to be made and it wasn’t long before a large pit was placed on the front lot of Dr. Ballard’s building, located on the north end of Bernice. Dr. B’s Pit BBQ, after waiting for final approval from the state and local officials, was up and going. One half of the building presently serves as Hambone’s art gallery, where, when not standing over the out- side pit or waiting on customers, he can be found sitting at his canvas or preparing a sculp- ture. Hambone is in the process of trying to purchase a home and acreage in Bernice. He presently makes that long drive to and from Shreveport each day. His wife Colette is presently living in Chandler, AZ where she practices as a Reik Master. Reiki is a Japanese technique used for relaxation and the reduction of stress. It is also well-known and used to promote healing within the body. Colette and her hus- band have horses and look for- ward to having a place so they can transport them here. “I hope to build my business here and be a part of this community,” said Hambone as he flashed a big smile. He invites everyone to come by and try his food and visit his gallery. Grilling and Painting Hambone with his first painting done in 2000. He has never had to start over or discard a painting. The producers were very impressed by Olivia’s bubbly personality and decided to record a segment for their Outdoor Living segment. Olivia was joined in the kitchen by KARD TV personality, Ashley Dowdy, who looked on as Olivia demonstrated how to make one of her favorite dishes, Easy Cheesy Lasagna. KARD was immensely impressed by Olivia’s self confidence and impeccable presentation. They began to look for a sponsor so they could run a weekly Louisiana Living segment featuring their newly discov- ered, amazing young cook. Mac’s Fresh Market agreed to sponsor the segment, and now KARD 14 will be run- ning promos announcing Olivia’s first show that will be televised at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday, July 13. Olivia will pre-record the first show, to allow she and her fam- ily to take their already planned vacation. Mac’s Fresh Market will provide the ingredients for each one of Olivia’s recipes. Olivia’s segment will air live each Wednesday at 4:00 and KARD will tag Olivia’s D’Arbonne Cooking Show facebook page so others may view the show.
