To all the Assisi Centre friends, welcome to the Spring edition of Notizie.

It’s been a long and cold, wet winter and it’s good to see the sun shining, the trees budding and fl owers blooming.

Since the last edition of Notizie the Board has been active on a range of matters including setting the budgets for the Centre for the next few years, overseeing the construction works and putting in place a new constitution for the Assisi Centre.

This latter initiative was important to implement because the previous constitution had been in place since the early 1990s and needed updating. It had been structured for the needs of that time, in particular it needed to be a constitution that embraced as wide a cross-section of the Italian community as possible in order to get their “buy-in’ to the Assisi Centre project which, at the time, was in its infancy.

Today our needs have changed. We need a constitution that recognises that the Centre is a leading residential aged care provider; that has strong accountability and transparency and, especially, that has a more streamlined Board that is fl exible and skilled in taking on the challenges that the Centre will increasingly face in the future.

An Extraordinary General Meeting was held in May to approve the new constitution and this will come into effect at the AGM scheduled for November.

During these last few months construction on the new extension has proceeded despite some minor interruptions caused by the wet weather and we anticipate completion to be on schedule for the fi rst quarter of 2013 to allow work to then begin on the renovation to our low-care (Hostel) facility. It’s wonderful to see it rise from the ground and its completion next year will be a very exciting event. A big thank you to staff and family and friends of our residents for your patience at the inconveniences caused by the works. You know that it will be worth it in the end.

In early June the aged care facility was fortunate to have the visit of Archbishop Angelo Forte, Archbishop of Chieti Vasto in Abruzzo, the region of origin of many of our residents. Archbishop Forte chatted to residents and gave them his blessings. Speaking to him afterwards he was full of praise for the care being shown to the residents and he said that he would keep the Centre, its residents and its staff in his prayers.

Finally, our annual Dinner Dance, organised by our wonderful Womens Committee, is coming up on Friday, 16th November at the Veneto Club. It’s a wonderful fund-raiser and a great evening and this year takes on a particular importance because it is Assisi’s 20th anniversary. So I look forward to seeing as many of you as possible at this event.

Assisi resident Camillo Rizio is fi ghting fi t, participating in most activities at the Centre.Camillo is part of the exercise group, and took part in the resident games to celebrate the London 2012 Olympics.

When asked about the meals at Centre he breaks into a broad smile, eyes twinkling and says, “Good, very good”. Like many residents, he is a keen observer of the building development, although most construction is happening inside the development now.

Keeping fi t is top of Camillo’s list of activities at the Centre, walking every day and he joins the exercise group nearly every week As a young man, Camillo kept fi t by training as a boxer. Being modest, he wouldn’t tell us how many fi ghts he won.

Born in 1929, Camillo lived near Rome and spent some time in the Italian army, as a surveyor. After the War Camillo, became a coal miner and in 1949 with his wife, Annette, migrated to Australia and lived in Brisbane for nearly 30 years. Eventually they moved to Melbourne and settled in Camberwell.

When asked what was it like as a migrant in Australia, with a broad smile he once again said, “Good, very good!”

Like many Italian migrant women at the time, his wife worked in the clothing industry. He worked in a dangerous industry and eventually with a commercial knitting company.

In the 1950’s most Australians weren’t aware of the dangers of lead. Camillo worked in an electrical cable manufacturing company which shielded the cables in lead. Fortunately, the company conducted regular blood tests and Camillo is free of lead in his blood, even to this day.

Camillo isn’t the only member of the Rizio clan at the Centre; his uncle’s mother recently joined the Assisi community.

Camillo’s love of life and his uplifting spirit is an example to us all.

Camillo è membro di un gruppo che fa palestra, ed ha partecipato agonisticamente ai giochi dei residenti in occasione delle Olimpiadi di Londra 2012.

Come ogni atleta Camillo necessità una dieta bilanciata e commentando sui pasti consumati all’Assisi ha dichiarato “Buoni, veramente buoni”.

Mantenersi in forma è una delle priorità di Camillo, che cammina ogni mattina e partecipa all’esercitazioni in palestra almeno una volta a settimana. Nato nel 1929 vicino Roma, Camillo da giovane tirava di boxe, ma essendo molto modesto, non ha voluto rivelare quanti incontri a vinto.

Nel 1949, dopo la guerra, è emigrato in Australia con la moglie Annette, insediandosi per una trentina d’anni a Brisbane, dove ha lavorato nelle miniere di carbone. Alla fi ne degli Anni 70, Camillo e Annette si sono trasferiti defi nitivamente a Melbourne, trovando la casa ideale nel quartiere di Camberwell.

Come molte immigrate italiane Annette ha lavorato nel settore delle confezioni tessili, mentre Carmelo, dopo le miniere in Queensland, ha lavorato prima in una maglieria, e poi per una compagnia elettrica che posava cavi di piombo. All’epoca la maggior parte degli australiani ignoravano i pericoli alla salute arrecati dal piombo, ma non la compagnia che impiegava Camillo, che sottoponeva i dipendenti a esami del sangue e, il nostro residente all’Assisi, ancora oggi non ha traccia di piombo nel sangue.

Camillo non è l’unico membro della famiglia Rizio all’Assisi, essendo stato recentemente raggiunto dallo zio della mamma.

A chi gli chiede di fare un bilancio della sua vita di emigrato italiano in Australia, Carmelo risponde come sul cibo dell’Assisi: “Buono, molto buono”.

FIGHTING

FITUn caloroso benvenuto a tutti gli amici del Centro Assisi, in occasione della pubblicazione dell’edizione primaverile di Notizie.

E’ stato un inverno lungo, freddo e umido ed è veramente un piacere vedere riapparire il sole tiepido e i gli alberi e le piante in fi ore.

Dall’ultima edizione di Notizie il Consiglio d’amministrazione del Centro Assisi è stato particolarmente impegnato nel fi ssare il bilancio per i prossimi anni, seguire i lavori di costruzione della nuova ala dell’Assisi e nello stendere il nuovo statuto (Costituzione) del Centro.

Quest’ultima iniziativa è stata di particolare valenza ed importanza perché il vecchio statuto, stilato nei primi Anni 90, necessitava un aggiornamento dato che era stato articolato sulle esigenze di quell’epoca. In particolare il nuovo documento include tutta la gamma di possibili servizi a pagamento, che gli anziani della comunità italiana possono ottenere all’Assisi, che sono stati annunciati lo scorso anno dal governo federale nell’ambito della riforma della Terza Età.

Oggi le necessità della nostra comunità sono cambiate come è cambiato il Centro, diventando un’eccellenza nella cura e nell’assistenza ai residenti, con un Consiglio d’amministrazione più snello e fl essibile, ma non per questo meno qualifi cato, che continuerà ad operare con estrema trasparenza e grande senso di responsabilità, per superare le sfi de future.

Una riunione straordinaria annuale si è resa necessaria lo scorso maggio, per approvare il nuovo statuto che entrerà in vigore con la prossima riunione annuale prevista a novembre.

Nonostante le brevi ed inevitabili interruzioni dovute al maltempo, i lavori di edifi cazione della nuova ala del Centro Assisi sono continuati e l’estensione, come era stato anticipato, dovrebbe essere ultimata entro il primo trimestre del 2013, prima dei lavori di rimodernamento dell’ostello.

Un grazie di vero cuore a tutto il personale, i residenti, le famiglie e gli amici per la pazienza esercitata durante mesi di disagio causati dai lavori di costruzione, che hanno comunque rappresentato un periodo eccitante e, in occasione dell’inaugurazione della nuova ala il prossimo anno, potremmo tutti dire che ne è valsa la pena.

Lo scorso giugno il Centro Assisi ha ricevuto la graditissima visita di monsignor Angelo Forte, arcivescovo di Chieti e Vasto in Abruzzo, la regione di origine di molti nostri residenti.

Monsignor Forte, che si è a lungo intrattenuto con i residenti dando loro la benedizione, conversando con i rappresentanti del Consiglio d’amministrazione ha elogiato l’ottimo lavoro del personale, e l’eccellente livello di assistenza fornito ai residenti, confermando che ricorderà l’Assisi e i suoi ospiti nelle sue preghiere.

Per fi nire l’edizione del 2012, della cena di gala annuale, come sempre organizzata dallo splendido e infaticabile Comitato femminile, prevista per venerdì 16 novembre presso il Veneto Club, quest’anno ha un’importanza particolare perché celebra il ventesimo anniversario del Centro Assisi.

Si tratta non solo di una serata gradevole e di un occasione per raccogliere fondi per il Centro, ma anche di un evento di grande importanza nel calendario degli italiani del Victoria che ricorda la nascita dell’Assisi, e al quale mi auguro di vedere numerosi di voi.

Resident, Camillo Rizio today and yesterday!

Il residente Camillo Rizio ieri ed oggi!

The aerial photo on the cover of this edition of Notizie was taken recently, and the photo of the site taken back around 1990 before Assisi Centre Aged Care was built, shows how the site of the old Sisters of Mercy convent site has changed.

Most of the old cypress pine trees on the property have died from drought or old age and had been progressively removed.

The heritage house has shifted of course, and the old smaller one demolished.

The original 90-bed hostel building which fi lls most of the right-hand side of the new photo opened in 1993, and the 30-bed St Francis Nursing Home as it was then, opened in the lower wing of the old convent building in 1996.

Now, we are seeing the new building with its additional 45 beds (dark green roof bottom left of picture) is well and truly established on site.

Work is right on schedule and now with the roof on and better weather ahead we can expect that this new building, Stage One, will be opened in early April next year, 2013.

Then work will commence on the major work of completely refurbishing the existing ’hostel’. The fi rst half of this work will be fi nished about six months later in late September, and then the remainder by mid-April 2014.

So in less than 18 months, there will be:

Thirty extra beds, with greater ability to care for dementia and heavy care needs. The new building will give us the ability to look after men with dementia, which is now diffi cult because of the shared living arrangements. Rooms will be bigger too.

Apart from six rooms, everyone will have their own bathroom and toilet. Those six rooms will be kept as much as possible for married couples.

New furniture, including fl at screen TVs in every room and the living areas.

Smart new décor and furnishings, and smarter communication systems.

New public areas, including a new multi-purpose area, which will serve as a chapel, theatre and for large events and activities, will replace our existing hall.

A 24-car underground car park.

A completely new pick-up/drop down area leading to a brighter more welcoming entrance.

Many more new , long-awaited features for residents, families and staff.

It will be a magnifi cent development on a magnifi cent, iconic site.

In September 2014, Assisi Centre will be ready to look after our community for the next 20 years, even better than we can now. We will take another aerial photograph to record this major development.

L’immagine aerea che è la foro di copertina di quest’edizione di Notizie, è stata scattata recentemente, mentre la foto a lato risale al 1990, prima della costruzione del Centro Assisi per la cura degli anziani. Le due foto, mese a confronto, indicano in quale maniera il vecchio Convento delle Suore di Carità à cambiato nel corso degli anni.

La maggior parte degli alberi, soprattutto pini e cipressi, che adornavano il giardino del Centro, sono stati rimossi dopo essere stati decimati dalla siccità e dalla vecchiaia.

La casa in stile Queen Ann, iscritta nel registro delle proprietà d’importanza storica della zona, è stata spostata mentre quella più piccola che era stata costruita accanto, è stata demolita.

La panoramica della foto più recente ci consente di vedere chiaramente le immagini alle quali siamo tutti abituati: l ’ostello da 90 posti letto, inaugurato nel 1993, che copre tutto il lato destro, e la Casa di riposo da 30 posti letto, che è stata ricavata dal pian terreno del vecchio convento, ma ci permette di immaginare il futuro rappresentato dalla nuova ala (i tetti verdi in

fondo alla foto), che potrà ospitare 45 residenti, e la cui prima fase, tempo permettendo, verrà aperta al pubblico ai primi di aprile del prossimo anno.

I lavori stanno andando a pieno ritmo e, con condizioni atmosferiche più clementi in arrivo, il completamento dovrebbe coincidere esattamente con le previsioni, per permettere che si riprenda dalla nuova fase di ristrutturazione, questa volta dell’ostello che verrà completamente rimodernato. La prima fase dei lavori di ristrutturazione dell’ostello verranno completati in sei mesi, entro settembre, e la parte fi nale ultimata a aprile del 2014.

In meno di 18 mesi il Centro Assisi quanto è cambiato?

Trenta nuovi posti letto. Maggiori risorse per prendersi cura di pazienti maschi, affetti da demenza, un tipo di assistenza al momento diffi coltosa per la condivisione di camere da letto, e da residenti con necessità particolari.

A parte sei camere da letto, che saranno prevalentemente riservate alle coppie sposate, tutte le altre saranno munite di bagno e gabinetto privati.

Nuova mobilia in tutte le stanze che saranno munite di televisioni a schermo piatto, come quelle che verranno installate nei salotti e le sale comuni.

Un nuovo e sofi sticato sistema di comunicazioni.

Nuovi salotti interni e zone esterne dove i residenti potranno sedersi a chiacchierare e un nuovo salone multiuso che fungerà da cappella, teatro, e per l’organizzazione di eventi.

Un parcheggio sotterraneo aperto 24 ore su 24.

Una nuova area per la consegna degli approvvigionamenti, che renderà più libera e accogliente l’entrata principale.

Molti altri cambiamenti, lungamente attesi dai residenti, i loro familiari e il personale, seguiranno.

Si tratta di progetto magnifi co che si svilupperà in un luogo iconico per la comunità italiana di Melbourne.

A settembre del 2014 il Centro Assisi sarà attrezzato per prendersi cura della comunità per i prossimi vent’anni, e meglio di quanto non abbia fatto fi nora, e una nuova veduta aerea lo confermerà.

From the Air 20 Years On 20 Anni Visti Dal Cielo

L’Assisi oggi – la nuova ala con il tetto verde scuro.

Every month the Activity staff group organise and supervise over 50 activities.

The group provides an average of 10 activities every week, some being repeated during the week. The weekends are largely reserved for pastoral activities and time for relatives visiting residents.

Over the last few months the activities away from Assisi ranged from outings to Werribee Open Range Zoo, Williamstown foreshore, the Botanical Gardens and the Dandenong Ranges.

The donations for the new Assisi bus have helped less mobile residents take advantage of these outings for which they quickly book a seat.

At Centre there are a range of activities that include bocce, musical events and ten pin bowling. Get Fit programs, art and craft programs including quilt making, visits from Bobby the therapy dog, the movie of the week and monthly birthday celebrations are equally exciting events.

Recently, the Three’s Company Trio came and performed segments from the Sound of Music. Many residents sang along, with the grand children who attended dancing along, while Linda Ciavalini from the centre translated the storyline for the one hour performance.

“Recently, I accompanied some members from

the activity team and residents on an outing and witnessed the care and effort taken to visit a place like Williamstown,” said Christian Peterson, producer of Notizie.

“A picnic was organised, public conveniences located, medication administered if required and a lot more. I didn’t realise what it took to go on an outing!”

It also takes some time to help residents on and off the bus. The lifting gear at the back of the bus is invaluable, allowing residents who previously found it diffi cult to go on excursions to see the sights.

The activity staff who supervised this outing to Williamstown showed kindness, patience and care

Ogni mese il personale dell’Assisi organizza più di cinquanta attività ricreative per i residenti.

Il gruppo di dedicati dipendenti organizza e supervisiona una decina di attività settimanali, alcune delle quali vengono ripetute dopo qualche giorno, mentre i fi ne settimana sono dedicati alla cura pastorale e spirituale e alle visite da parte dei parenti.

Nelle scorse settimane, grazie alla donazione dell’autobus attrezzato per il trasporto di persone in sedia a rotelle che a permesso anche ai residenti meno mobili di partecipare alle attività ricreative, e negli scorsi mesi molti di loro hanno avuto modo di visitare il giardino zoologico di Werribee, dove gli

animali non sono rinchiusi nelle gabbie, il lungomare di Williamstown, i giardini botanici e la catena collinosa dei Dandenong Rangers.

Al Centro Assisi vengono organizzate competizioni sportive, come le partite di bocce o di bowling e i programmi di fi tness, ed eventi culturali quali quelli musicali o il fi lm della settimana. Molto popolare il programma di attività legate all’arte all’artigianato le visite di Bobby, il nostro cagnolino dalle proprietà “terapeutiche”, e naturalmente i compleanni mensili, che diventano immancabilmente, delle grandi e divertenti celebrazioni.

Recentemente i residenti hanno assistito ad un spettacolo canoro del Three’s Company Trio che ha eseguito alcuni brani tratti dal famoso musical Sound of Music, mentre i loro nipotini ballavano e Linda Ciavalini, del Centro assisteva con delle traduzioni ed interpretazioni, dei momenti salienti della storia.

“Recentemente ho accompagnato alcuni residenti in un’attività di gruppo a Williamstown - ha detto Christian Peterson che produce la nostra rivista ‘Notizie’ – ed ho avuto modo di constatare personalmente la cura, l’attenzione e gli sforzi del nostro team di organizzatori che in poco tempo hanno servito il picnic, localizzato i bagni, somministrato

The singing to and from Williamstown was enthusiastic and loud, in Italian of course!

THE ASSISI GAMESIn the last edition, the start of the games to celebrate London 2012 was featured.

Well here are the results.

Just like our women Olympic swimmers, the Assisi women dominated the medal count for the Marathon.

Gold went to Mrs Vittoria Alessio, with Silver toMrs Vilma Colella and Mrs Caterina Rendina takingout Bronze.

Some of the other events featured were Javelin, Bocce, Shot Put and an extraordinary wheel chair relay, in which some of the activity staff were the “drivers”.

Congratulations to all residents and staff who made the Games such a fun and fantastic event.

Maybe the activity staff should organise annual training camps in preparation for Rio!!!!

Il personale, come sempre, ha mostrato enorme gentilezza, cure e pazienza, ma anche tanta contagiosa allegria, con i residenti. Le escursioni, per quanto diffi cili da organizzare, sono molto importanti per il benessere dei nostri ospiti, e la riprova sono le cantate in coro che i nostri residenti in gita, fanno nel tragitto dal centro a destinazione, e ritorno, entusiastiche, a voce altissima e naturalmente in italiano.

I GIOCHI AL CENTRO ASSISINell’ultima edizione di Notizie vi avevamo annunciate l’inizio dei giochi per celebrare le Olimpiadi di Londra 2012.

Come le nostre nuotatrici a Londra, le donne hanno dominato il medagliere della maratona.

Ecco i risultati conseguiti dalle ‘atlete’: medaglia d’oro alla signora Vittoria Alessio, d’argento alla signora Vilma Colella e di bronzo alla signora Caterina Rendina.

Alcuni degli altri eventi sportivi sono stati il lancio del giavellotto e del peso e una gara di bocce, oltre ad una

straordinaria staffetta con residenti in sedie a rotelle e con i membri del personale che hanno mostrato tutto il loro agonismo in qualità di “conduttori”.

Congratulazioni e un sincere ringraziamento a tutti i partecipanti, residenti e personale, che hanno reso i giochi olimpici all’Assisi, un evento divertente e veramente fantastico.

Forse potremmo cominciare ad allenarci con delle attività annuali, in preparazione per Rio.

Bajramsha Meta, capo unità del reparto St. Catherine, ha qualità straordinarie.

Bajramsha, si è detta un po’ imbarazzata a venire descritta come straordinaria, ma in un periodo di tempo relativamente breve, ha raggiunto degli obiettivi che possono venire defi niti solo come straordinari.

La famiglia di Bajramsha Meta si ‘ trasferita in Australia nel 1999, dal Kosovo, il paese dell’Europa orientale vicino all’Albania e non lontano dall’Italia

Le prime esperienze di Bajrmsha in Australia sono comuni a molti immigrati: i problemi di insediamento e l’apprendimento dell’inglese per integrarsi nella

società e per poter lavorare. Ma Bajramsha ha fatto di più. Non soddisfatta di aver imparato perfettamente l’inglese, si è volute perfezionare anche in un’altra lingua, quella italiana, che le ha permesso di lavorare, dopo gli studi come infermiera specializzazione per l’assistenza agli anziani, al Centro Assisi.

Parlando del suo lavoro Bajrmsha sostiene che le qualifi che professionali sono essenziali, ma altrettanto essenziale è la cura, l’attenzione, la pazienza, soprattutto con pazienti anziani, e la possibilità di fermarsi a chiacchierare con i residenti, per farli sentire a loro agio, e di far fare loro una risata.

La direttrice del settore assistenza dell’Assisi Eileen Kielty , ha detto che Bajramsha è una grande professionista e una persona votata alla sua professione, che come gli altri capo unità spesso trascorre il week end al Centro Assisi.

R noi del Centro ci riteniamo veramente fortunati di aver trovato una persona straordinaria come Bajramsha.

UNA NUOVA VITA ALL’ASSISI

Bajramsha Meta, Unit Manager of the St Catherine Unit is an extraordinary person.

Bajramsha will feel a little embarrassed being called extraordinary, but what she has achieved in such a relatively short time is worthy of being described as ‘extraordinary’.

In 1999 Bajramsha Meta and her family came to Australia from Kosovo, which is located in south-eastern Europe, near Italy and Albania.

Quickly she settled into Australia and set about creating a new life with her family.

First Bajramsha learnt English, which she now speaks fl uently, and also set about to speak Italian. She wanted to become a qualifi ed nurse in aged care and chose the Assisi Centre.

To learn one language, English, so quickly is an achievement, but a second language while studying nursing deserves to be described as ‘extraordinary’.

She believes nursing is not just about being professionally qualifi ed.

“Caring, particularly in age care, is about encouraging the residents to have a laugh, talking with them

without rushing off because you are too busy, as well creating the best quality of life possible,” said Bajramsha.

She is extremely determined and dedicated to her profession,” said Director of Care, Eileen Kielty.

As other Unit Managers at Assisi, Bajramsha comes into the Centre after hours and on weekends.

We are so glad that Bajramsha chose the Assisi Centre.

A NEW LIFE AT ASSISIAnietta Heina loves volunteering at the Assisi Centre, creating beautiful shawls, and doing delicate embroidery with and for the residents.

She also makes cards for the residents and completes amazing beading.

“As a volunteer, I feel part of a larger family, and have made so many more friends.

A particular joy is to hear about the residents’ lives and how they came to Australia” said Anietta (Toni) Heina.

Toni came to Australia in 1955 and like many young Italian women at the time worked in the clothing industry, starting as an ironing lady, on the steam press. Hot work in the summer! Eventually Toni moved to the dress making department.

When Toni and her husband met, it was love at fi rst sight.

On their Lambretta motor scooter they went to dances and saw the sights of Melbourne, recalled Toni with a smile that seemed to bring back romantic memories.

With the expansion of the Assisi Centre there will be more opportunities for people to join the Assisi family by becoming a volunteer.

Volunteers play an extremely important part in the well-being of the residents, and of course their own lives.

Our volunteers help out in so many different ways. For example, the Men’s Choir, all volunteers, come often to perform for the residents. They perform to a packed house We all know how Italians love their music.

And there’s Bobby, the white fl uffy therapy dog!

Other volunteers help less mobile residents go to Holy Mass, by guiding them to our extremely beautiful chapel. Attending Holy Mass is so important to Assisi residents and is a critical part of their spiritual lives.

Others call Tombola (Bingo), and help with outings in the Assisi bus.

Anietta Heina, una volontaria al Centro Assisi, adora creare degli scialli bellissimi, con e per i residenti, con dei delicati ed intricati ricami, e dei biglietti d’auguri, incastonati di perline colorate dalle quali ricava splendide immagini.

Anietta (Toni), dice che il suo ruolo di volontaria le permette di sentirsi parte di una grande famiglia con i residenti, con i quali ha ormai un legame di amicizia profonda: “Una delle cose che mi piace di più – ha dichiarato a Notizie – è conoscere le loro storie sui primi tempi in Australia”.

Toni è arrivata in Australia nel 1955, e come tante ragazze italiane a quell’epoca, ha trovato lavoro nell’industria delle confezioni, prima come stiratrice, “un lavoraccio durante i mesi estivi”, ricorda – e poi come sarta.

E’ stato in quegli anni che Toni ha incontrato l’anima gemella, il marito, ed è stato ‘amore a prima vista’. “Andavamo ai balli con la Lambretta – ricorda Toni con un sorriso, rammentando quelle memorie romantiche.

Con l’espansione del Centro Assisi, ci saranno nuove opportunità per unirsi alla grande famiglia dell’Assisi e partecipare al programma di volontariato.

I volontari, un’attività che da grandi soddisfazioni personali, giocano un ruolo di grande importanza nel benessere dei residenti e posso assistere in una miriade di attività. Il coro maschile (tutti volontari), ad esempio, viene spesso ad allietare le giornate dei residenti e si esibisce davanti ad una sala gremita di italiani appassionati della bella musica. E poi non si può dimenticare Bobby, il nostro cagnetto bianco con qualità ‘terapeutiche’.

Altri volontari aiutano i residenti con problemi di mobilità a raggiungere la nostra bella cappella e partecipare alla Santa Messa, un appuntamento importante per la vita spirituale degli ospiti dell’Assisi, altri ancora assistono nella tombola settimanale, o nelle escursioni con il nostro autobus super attrezzato.

The NewsThere has been a lot of media talk about the ‘crisis in aged care’ lately following from the Commonwealth budget decision not to index the care subsidy arrangements for this year. When this is added to the cost increases that we cannot avoid such as wages, and the demands of the construction project, it certainly makes it more diffi cult than normal but far from a ‘crisis’.

The media likes to raise anxieties around aged care because it sells newspapers and advertising.

However, you can be assured that at Assisi while we are making changes in different ways to cope, our focus is on improving care and services and doing it smarter. Charles Darwin found that the species that survived best where those most adaptable to change. That’s our approach.

Changes to servicesOur new laundry is a case in point. We have completely rebuilt and re-equipped our laundry so that instead of just doing the personal laundry items on-site, we will now be doing all the linen laundering like sheets, on-site as well so that in future we hope to avoid lost clothing – one of the most common irritations for residents and families.

The importance of foodFor all of us, our meals are more than just getting nutrition. Meals are essential social experiences and activities and times when all our senses are stimulated – sight, taste, touch and texture, smell and sound. That’s one of the reasons why food is important and why we value it so highly at Assisi Centre.

The average daily food cost for Assisi resident is 50 precent higher than the average daily food cost in the aged care industry. Everyone from the Board members down want our freshly-cooked, home-style Italian food to be one of the great points of difference and one of the big reasons why people want to be at Assisi Centre as their fi rst choice of residential care.

The important things thatdon’t cost much moneySo much of what happens at Assisi is not a matter of spending. It’s more about what we do and how we do it. The Assisi ‘Olympics’ was a good example. A huge amount of effort and involvement by staff and the residents for relatively little cost produced a very exciting result and a lot of fun, and at times, intense competitiveness - one of this year’s true highlights.

Thanks for your patience Thanks also for everyone’s patience and understandingwith the changes to car parking, the entrance problems,and the laundry and so on. We do the best we can in suchcircumstances and they are all temporary. Hopefully,everyone can now see glimpses of the future and thebenefi ts before us very soon.

The fi rst stage is right on track and will be open byApril next year – only six months away and everythingfi nished 12 months after that. At the rate at which timespeeds by these days, it will be all done before we know it.

Le notizieI mezzi d’informazione australiani hanno scritto e parlato molto della cosiddetta ‘crisi nell’assistenza agli anziani’, dopo la decisione del governo federale di non indicizzare, nell’ultima manovra di bilancio, i sovvenzionamenti per l’assistenza per quest’anno. Nel nostro caso, se si addizionano questi costi a quelli di normale gestione, che includono gli scatti di carriera e le correzioni dei salari dei dipendenti, e quelle per la costruzione della nuova ala, la situazione è un po’ di diffi coltosa del normale, ma parlare di crisi è sicuramente esagerato.

Ai mezi d’informazione spesso piace fare alzare la tensione e l’ansietà attorno all’assistenza agli anziani, perché è spesso un argomento seguito, che fa salire le vendite dei giornali e della pubblicità.

Possiamo assicurarvi che all’Assisi abbiamo adottato l’approccio di Charles Darwin che ha scoperto che la specie che quella che sopravvive meglio è quella che mostra il maggior spirito di adattabilità, e quindi mentre apporteremo qualche necessario cambiamento, continueremo ad impegnarci per migliorare il nostro livello di assistenza e per migliorare i servizi.

Cambiamenti dei serviziIl nostro servizio di lavanderia è cambiato per evitare lo smarrimento di capi d’abbigliamento dei residenti, una delle maggiori fonti di irritazione per loro e per i familiari, durante i trasferimenti. La lavanderia è stata completamente ristrutturata e munita di nuovi elettrodomestici industriali che ci permetteranno di lavare non solo gli indumenti personali, ma anche tovaglie, lenzuola e asciugamani.

L’importanza del ciboPer tutti noi il momento del pasto non è solo collegato alla nutrizione, ma è un’esperienza sociale importante quando tutti i nostri sensi: vista, sapore, tatto, udito e olfatto, vengono stimolati. E’ per questo che all’Assisi diamo grande importanza al cibo.

Il costo del cibo al Centro Assisi è del 50% circa, superiore a quello della media nazionale, dell’industria dell’assistenza agli anziani. Tutti noi, dal presidente e i membri del Consiglio d’amministrazione, ai residenti e i dipendenti, favoriscono cibi, sempre freschi, della migliore tradizione culinaria italiana. La nostra cucina è una delle ragioni per le quali gli anziani preferiscono risiedere al Centro Assisi.

Le cose importanti chenon gravano sul portafoglioMoti degli eventi organizzati all’Assisi, non costano soldi. Un esempio lampante sono state le Olimpiadi che sono state organizzate per il divertimento e la gioia dei residenti, grazie al grande impegno del personale, e con costi relativamente limitati di produzione. Il risultato è stato un successo strepitoso, con grande divertimento ed impegno agonistico tra i residenti.

Grazie per la vostra pazienzaUn sincere ringraziamento a tutti per la pazienza dimostrata durante i i lavori di costruzione, con i cambiamenti relativi all’entrata ed al parcheggio, e per la lavanderia. Stiamo facendo del nostro meglio per alleviare al massimo i temporanei disagi ai quali faranno seguito soluzioni future ideali una volta terminati i lavori di costruzione della nuova ala.

La prima fase della edifi cazione della nuova ala verrà inaugurata ad aprile del prossimo anno, e I lavori saranno ultimate dodici mesi più tardi. Alla velocità di come si sta andando al momento si direbbe che i lavori potrebbe venire terminati addirittura in anticipo rispetto ai tempi prestabiliti.
