DESCRIPTION

Throughout the Johnson and Nixon administrations, the War on Poverty - and the Great Society more broadly - laid the foundation for our modern-day safety net, including the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program and the emergence of food banks across the nation. Created as a food assistance program in 1974, Second Harvest Food Bank of Santa Clara and San Mateo Counties continues to provide food for people in need in our community. From gleaning in fields to establishing mobile farmers’ markets to ‘rescuing’ food from local grocery stores, Second Harvest has been at the forefront in making sure that those who need food have access to it. www.SHFB.org/40years

In 1992, Second Harvest undertakes a dramatic expansion of facilities, first acquiring a facility on Curtner Ave. in San Jose,

then another on Bing Street in San Carlos two years later. Combined, the two facilities double the Food Bank's square footage.
