Our Leading Knight has planned a fun “HighSchool Sock Hop” on Saturday, 11/17. The theme is “TheWay We Were”. The plan is to dress like you did then, theway you were, but for me it was “b.m.t.” so I will have todress the way I thought you were! This will be a funevent- with picture taking opportunities, music and dancing.Let the good times roll!UNEARTH THE CHAMPIONS!

During my last Conference I attended forbusiness, I listened to two keynote speakers. DrHenry Kissinger and Tom Peters, author of In Searchof Excellence. Both were very interesting andinsightful. What caught my attention in listening toTom Peters was his ideas and how they apply notonly to the business world, but extend toorganizations like ours, where we deal with people. The term unearth the champions relates to what hecalls the “obvious ideas”: the paramount importanceof an abiding orientation toward action over talk, matchless customer intimacy, a wholehearteddevotion to acquiring and developing the besttalent, entrepreneurship spurred internally, the ever-

difficult task of “keeping it simple,” and leadership as “aproduct of passion, passion, passion.”

So now that the first half of my term has beencompleted, the remainder of my year will be devoted tounearth the champions. We have plenty in our lodge!

At least once, everyday, I think of something thathas made me happy.

Have a Happy Thanksgiving!

REMEMBERING & HONORING OUR VETERANS AN ELK TRADITION

In each of the 172 VA Medical Centers there is anElk committee at work. Literally, thousands of Elks andtheir families give generously of their time, energy andresources so that the lives of our ill and aging veterans willbe enhanced. Hundreds of thousands of hours and likenumbers of dollars are devoted to programs that aredesigned to keep us true to our pledge: “So long as thereare veterans, the Benevolent and Protective Order ofElks will never forget them.” And now we’ve broadenedour program to include outpatients and veterans who arehomeless.

(The introduction Elks National Veterans ServiceCommission-www. Elks.org)

In our lodge resides a gentleman who not onlyrecites the slogan, he lives it. We all know him as JimKellogg, Chair of our National Services Committee(Veterans) and himself a veteran. Being the age of 80+has not slowed his passion or commitment to the task.Perhaps he walks a little slower, but he accomplishes hisgoals in a speedy manner.

A challenge was made by John Peterson, thatanytime Jim attends a Wednesday meeting he woulddonate $50 also many other Elks took the challengepledging varying denominations. As a result $600 has beenraised. The raised funds meet the needs of Sepulveda’sHospice and Nursing Facility. Now there is a petty cashfund established for vets to use for personal desires suchas sodas, desserts. Currently monies raised at meetingshelp replenish the fund. At every meeting that Jim attendsat least $75 is raised.

Not only does he raise funds for the vets, heprovides monthly outings and bingo games with the help offellow Elks on his committee. He is an advocate for thesick and elderly vets. When he feels a need of the veteransis not being met he contacts the Veterans Administrationand gets a solution. His fondest job is arranging the annualbrunch for vets from the nursing home at our lodge inNovember. If you wish to be part of the committee forvets, contact Jim. Or attend a meeting on Wednesday nightand give to the Peterson challenge.

Secondly, I would like to mention that the CharityBall will be held on Saturday, November 17 at the Lodge. This event is our big fundraiser for the food we distribute tothe needy of the community at Christmastime. The eventthis year, has the theme of “The Way We Were”. It willbe a tribute to the 50’s. A soda fountain atmospherewill be there with milk shakes and frappes and all sorts ofwonderful things from the past. Raffle tickets will bemailed out to all Elks to buy or sell. All the details are onthe tickets. There will be many great prizes to be wonalong with some wonderful door prizes. All money fromthe Ball and Raffle go to feed those in need. So, PLEASE,support this great annual event. It will make so manypeople happy.

It’s A Military Thing

The Third Infantry Regiment at Fort Myer has theresponsibility for providing ceremonial units and honorguards for state occasions, White House social functions, public celebrations and internments at Arlington NationalCemetery. Among these responsibilities is standing a veryformal sentry watch at the Tombs of the Unknowns.

The public is familiar with the precision of what iscalled “walking post” at the Tombs. There are roped offgalleries where visitors can form to observe the troopersand their measured step and almost mechanical silent rifleshoulder changes. They are relived every hour in a veryformal drill, which continues uninterrupted all night, remaining unchanged from the daylight hours. To thesevery special men, the continuity of this post is the key to thehonor and respect shown to these honored dead, symbolicof all Americans unaccounted for among the combat dead.

When hurricane Isabel tore through Washington,D.C., the Regimental Commander of the U.S. ThirdInfantry sent word to the nighttime Sentry Detail to securethe post and seek shelter for the high winds, to ensuretheir personal safety. The Sentry on duty replied,“I’ve got buddies getting shot at in Iraq who wouldkick my butt if word got to them that we let themdown...I’m sure as hell have no intention of spendingmy Army career being known as the idiot who couldn’tstand a little light breeze and shirked his duty.”

Throughout the night, in winds that overturnedvehicles and turned debris into projectiles, the measuredsteps continued. The military members assigned to the dutyof guarding the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier were givenpermission to suspend the assignment. They refused.Soaked to the skin, marching in the pelting rain of a tropicalstorm, they said that guarding the Tomb was not justan assignment, it was the highest honor that can beafforded to a service person. The Tomb has beenpatrolled continuously since 1930.

In a time in our nation’s history when media spinseems to have become the accepted norm, there beathearts, the enlisted hearts that fully understand thatdevotion to duty is not a part time occupation. Throughoutthe night when most residents were home, safe and warmin their beds, these men proudly went about their assignedresponsibilities unseen, unrecognized and in the finesttradition of the American Enlisted Personnel.

Whether serving across the ocean, in the drydesert of the Middle East, or standing watch over theTomb of the Unknown Soldier, we are very proud of ourmen and women in uniform!

Please remember our Veterans on November 11.

It included 2eggs bacon or sausage hash browns and toast. Coffeewas $1.99 extra and juice was $2.09 extra too. Waffleswere $6.69 which did include an egg, but coffee and juicewas still extra. Biscuits and gravy and hash browns were$7.19 add an egg $1.00

Plus don’t forget to add tax and tip so breakfastcould cost you $ 14.07, $13.07 or $13.45The other popular spot started at $4.99 includes pancakes, but coffee and juice were still extra and tax and tip. Youcould order all this and get coffee and juice for $6.00 and$8.00 for a special. Come down and try an Elksbreakfast. Upcoming Campouts

November 9-11 Kenney Grove-Thanksgiving December 9 Holiday Brunch-Grand Vista

Hotel January 11-12 Valencia

August at OceansideReally nice camping – but - -

The Kampers were certainly nottreated the way we’re treated at the

Santa Barbara Lodge which was rather disappointing. We had a very good turn out – 13 rigs. It is so

nice to have Gus and Darlene Chinery with us this year -- no trips to Vermont – good to see ya guys! Someonecommented to Bill vW that it was a long trip - - Hisresponse was, “To be in 70 degree weather, I don’t thinkit was long at all”.

It is really a treat, when we’re near a MilitaryBase and Donna Colleran can take you shopping. Ohyah, I got fined by Sheriff Gene Ewald cause I went tobuy a coupla loaves of bread and came out having spent$100+/-. But there were soooo many things I saw that Ireally needed.

Johnny D spent a considerable amount of timeworking on his generator – but good thing he located theproblem, as I recall there could have been serious trouble.

Donna Colleran’s idea for a “burrito” bar forSaturday night’s dinner was OUTSTANDING. Goodgrief what great food.

It truly is difficult to adhere to any “eating program” wheneveryone is such good cooks, regardless of which meal.

Cheryl’s friend, Carl, made a mean guacamole;ya know the kind you want to eat by the spoonfuls.Gotta admit – I DID! Speaking of Cheryl (ya again)seems she had a bit of trouble spilling things. Of courseshe blamed Bill vW for the first spill. Let’s see - -exactly how did this work. She had HER drink on Bill’schair table and blamed him for spilling the drink. Don’tknow, but it seems there’s something wrong with thispicture. Then Sheriff Gene, from the Tattle Tail box Ithink, fined her for making the Colleran’s campsite looklike a CSI Crime Scene.

Sheriff Gene advised us this may be his lastcampout for a while, at least, because he’s planning tobecome the “Happy Wanderer”. He will be sorelymissed. We all hope he doesn’t forget our group and willreturn for visits now and then. Of course, we’re allhoping he keeps in touch through at least email cause wewanta know where he is and how he’s doing.

We truly missed Mike and Mary Flannery.Jimmy Miller took over Mike’s job providing wood andfire pit, which was sincerely appreciated. Thanks somuch Jimmy!

Chuck and Judy Kudra were missed also. Ilearned something very surprising about quiet, reservedJudy. I mentioned the gals playing new games at FlyingFlags last month, it sure sounded like they were having a

very good time. The rumor is that quiet, reserved Judybecomes absolutely EVIL playing games, hard to believe, but I have it on good authority and several gals concurred.

Seems several of the gals are bringing new gamesto our attention, since most of the fellas are totallyconsumed with poker. Peggy Mullenaux brought a quarteror dollar game (3 of one or the other) and is played withone dice, very similar to Left, Right, Cup we’ve playedbefore. THEN she had the audacity to WIN the very firstgame. Sure glad we weren’t playing with dollars. When Isearched for my L,R, Cup dice, found we had played thatgame with nickels. Ya, think Peggy is a shill of some kind?

Early arrivals appear to be the rule rather than theexception of late. Considering the distance in this case, it’svery understandable. The Stulls were early arrivals, but itseems Jessica had extensive travel plans for her chauffer,David. Almost to the Mexican border the next day, Davidswore he wasn’t getting behind the steering wheel of thatJeep again for a long while. That lasted till he took GusChinery for a drive. Guess what kind of tow vehicle Guswants now? Not real sure Darlene is buying into thissuggested arrangement, but Gus was pretty vocal about hiswishes.

There were seven who stayed over till Monday –that is a real treat. John & Marva and Gary & Peggypretty much just hung out together. About 3:00 Sundayafternoon Debbie LaFarr suggested it was snack time. Itturned into an all afternoon early evening potluck.Between the LaFarrs, Chinerys, Stulls, Ericksons and thevW’s, we had yet again “good eats”.

Please remember the upcoming campouts:October - Far West - - Halloween gig - - tons of fun.November – Turkey Fest - - Good Food – and DO NOTforget to contact the Ericksons if you plan to come for theday. Previous article explained in detail.

Our Lodge plays Bingo once a month with 20% goingto the Major Project. The more who play the more is given. Also 80% goes back to the players.

On September 28th we had a fair crowd. Many thanksto Liz Bell for assisting me with selling of the cards and gettingme more players. We tried something new and had a bingoboard set up to display the numbers called, and many thanks toJessica Stull, the Elk Ladies first vice president, acting asVanna White. It was a good idea, but I got to sit the whole timeand I ran Jessica ragged. Bob Arbetman and I went to theVentura Lodge to see how a real Bingo game is played. Nowthey have a lighted bingo board and a closed circuit TV set up,but what they don’t have is the lovely Vanna (Jessica) White(Stull). Come out next month and play and give some back toour Major Project and have fun doing it. Killer chops, BobbyWilliams won twice last month and won one of Dave Pearson’sdollar draws. Nice night for Mr. Williams.

ELK LADIES AT LARGE…

If you missed bingo on Friday, September28th, you missed the unveiling of David Naccarato’s newbingo board. Karen, David’s lovely wife and Bingoassistant, was not feeling well, so I pitched in to help putup the numbers – hence my new nickname of VannaWhite which some people seem to carrying to theextreme, calling me Vanna in front of people I don’t evenknow! How embarrassing. It was a lucky night for theLadies once again. Winners from bingo include CorneliaMeehan, Jeri Miller, Patti Serota and me. David Stullplayed my cards for me and Jeri Miller verified it, asthere is NO CHEATING ALLOWED.

Hope you all have your tickets to the CharityBash coming up on November 17th. You don’t want toget left out of this one – its going to be so much fun.Come in apparel of the 50s as it is an old fashion sockhop (I’m told it is okay to keep your shoes on). Don’t sayyou can’t think of what they wore back then – you’veseen Happy Days on TV. If all else fails and you justcan’t dress up, come anyway and enjoy the fun. Therewill be games and prizes and some very special SWEETTREATS I’m told. Yes, I was told, but I’ve been swornto secrecy. Time to have some fun and do your bit forthe Christmas Charity Baskets. Only $20 per person.

You won’t want to miss Kay Riebe’s art showbeginning November 1st at the Credit Union at the CivicArts Plaza. She has a wide variety of oil paintings thatcan be viewed and/or purchased. We have so manytalented ladies in this group.

If you missed seeing Kathy Ryder around, it isbecause she and Tom along with their daughter andgranddaughter took a trip to London for ten days. SeemsKathy’s granddaughter has a keen interest in the theatreand they are going to the Globe and the National amongothers. What an exciting trip for a Junior High theatreaficionado!

The Ladies were sad to learn that we will belosing Kelley La Cross, who was to be our Major ProjectChair. She and her family are moving to New York. Weare lucky though, that Niki Case has agreed to fill that

position – way to go, Niki. We want to give Niki a chance tomeet with her committee before I announce any of thedetails. Check your Antler Antics next month. A big thanksto those people who have agreed to serve with Niki and ifyou haven’t yet volunteered, there is still time.

Alice Kennedy, who does the mailing of the AntlerAntics, sends a big thank you to Myrna Block and husbandJay, who pitched in and helped after a slight snafu causedthem to be mailed late. Alice was otherwise occupied takingcare of ill family members.

We have developed a little form called Getting toKnow You that we hope will help everyone get to know alittle more about all our wonderful members. If you attendedthe October meeting, you received your copy. If you don’tregularly attend meetings and would still like to get your copy, just call any one of us and we’ll get it to you. Don’t forget toreturn the form so we can really GET TO KNOW YOU.

Be sure to attend the Flag Retirement Ceremony onNovember 11 and the Veterans Brunch on November18 andsee your colleagues at work supporting Elk activities.

EACH MOMENT IS A GIFTMarylin CissellBecause you are the architect,You see us worry free,And trusting in your blueprint, God,Designed to love whole heartedly.

Forget what's happened in the past,Our future yet to be,Today each treasured moment, Lord,The gift from you, unconditionally.Amen
