MERCY’S MEASURE “Blest Are You”

I, like most people, am far more blessed than I recognize on any given day. And I, like most people, am far more likely to complain about what I need (or want) instead of giving thanks for the abundant blessings I already have. In His first sermon recorded in Matthew’s Gospel, Jesus gives us an introduction to the many graces of Stewardship by showing us that even those most in need (the poor, the sorrowful, the meek, the lowly, etc.) are greatly blessed if they keep their eyes focused on what is really important instead of what everyone else sees. Anyone can (and everyone will) tell you what is wrong with their lives, but true Christian stewards resist these negative urges and tell you how much they are blessed. This is different than that sophomoric phrase we hear too often--“it’s all good”-- which is really an attempt to deny whatever bad is happening to us at that moment. Stewards, and all Christians, are “blessed” in that we see God’s hand guiding us through our difficulties and upholding us with gifts that we do not expect or even ask for. Stewards acknowledge suffering and persecution in their lives, but they also know that every sacrifice is rewarded by God. Thus, in the Beatitudes Jesus not only blesses those who are otherwise forgotten by the world, He also blesses those whom the world would persecute for being Christians. And He invites those who are listening to become true Stewards of the grace and blessings that God bestows upon everyone, ignoring the world’s values and its hatred of all that is beyond its grasp. We are in the midst of three days which seem very different yet together they help us understand more fully what it means to be blessed and to be a Steward of God’s gifts to us. Yesterday, the world celebrated Halloween with children running after candy, decorated homes, hilarious costumes and stories of monsters. As a holiday, it ranks second only to Christmas in consumer spending. Yet, the very meaning of “Halloween” has nothing to do with evil or candy. Literally, it means, “the eve of all hallows” or “the eve of all the holy ones.” Although some people see this day in opposition to all that is holy, the truth is we are so confident in God’s blessings that we share the goodies we have even with the little devils who approach our door. God is great and those who trust in the Lord never fear! The Gospel of the Beatitudes teaches us the importance of the lives of the saints and their numerous ways of witnessing the blessings of God in our lives. Today, we celebrate all that is holy and good in our world, especially the people whose lives inspire us to follow Christ. The saints are stewards of holiness: the poor, the lowly, the peacemakers as well as the martyrs and the pure of heart. Without the saints, there would be no witness, no preaching, no Bible and no Church! With the saints as our witness, we learn how to follow Christ in our own lives. Tomorrow’s Commemoration of All Souls reminds us of the central truth of Christianity: we will rise with Christ. Though we mourn our deceased loved ones, we also know that there is no lasting death for those who believe. Our greatest blessing is not found on earth; it can only be found in God’s embrace.

LA MEDIDA DE LA MERCED “Usted Es Bendecido”

Yo, así como la mayoría de la gente, estoy mucho más bendecido de lo que reconozco estar en cualquier día. Yo, así como la mayoría de la gente, estoy mucho más propenso a quejarme por lo que necesito (o quiero) en vez de dar gracias por las bendiciones abundantes que ya tengo. En su primer sermón registrado en el Evangelio de San Mateo, Jesús nos da una introducción a las muchas bendiciones de la Mayordomía mostrándonos que incluso los más necesitados (los pobres, los tristes, los débiles, los humildes, etc.) son grandemente bendecidos si mantienen sus ojos fijos en lo que es realmente importante en lugar de lo que todo el mundo ve. Cualquiera puede (y todo el mundo podrá) decirles lo que está mal en sus vidas, pero los verdaderos mayordomos Cristianos se resisten a estos impulsos negativos y les dicen lo mucho que son bendecidos. Esto es tan diferente a esa frase presuntuosa que escuchamos muy a menudo, “todo está bien”, lo cual es en realidad un intento de negar lo malo que nos está pasando en ese momento. Los mayordomos, y todos los Cristianos, son “bendecidos” al ver la mano de Dios guiándonos en nuestras dificultades y ayudándonos con regalos que no esperamos o ni siquiera pedimos. Los mayordomos reconocen el sufrimiento y la persecución en sus vidas, pero también saben que cualquier sacrificio es recompensado por Dios. Por lo tanto, en las Bienaventuranzas Jesús no sólo bendice a los que son olvidados por el mundo, pero también Él bendice a aquellos a los que el mundo persigue por ser Cristianos. Y Él invita a quienes escuchan para convertirse en verdaderos Mayordomos de la gracia y las bendiciones que Dios le otorga a cada uno, ignorando los valores del mundo y su odio a todo lo que está fuera de su alcance. Estamos en medio de tres días que parecen muy diferentes pero juntos nos ayudan a comprender más plenamente lo que significa ser bendecido y ser un Mayordomo de los regalos de Dios para nosotros. Ayer, el mundo celebró Halloween con los niños pidiendo caramelos, con hogares decorados, con disfraces cómicos e historias de monstruos. Como un día de fiesta, ocupa el segundo lugar después de Navidad en comparación con los gastos del consumidor. Sin embargo, el significado mismo de “Halloween” tiene nada que ver con el mal o con caramelos. Literalmente, significa, “la víspera de todo lo santo” o “la víspera de todos los santos.” Aunque algunas personas ven este día con oposición a todo lo que es santo, la verdad es que confiamos en las bendiciones de Dios que incluso compartimos los regalos que tenemos con los pequeños demonios que se acercan a nuestra puerta. ¡Dios es grande y aquellos que confían en el Señor nunca temen! El Evangelio de las Bienaventuranzas nos enseña la importancia de la vida de los santos y sus numerosas formas de presenciar las bendiciones de Dios en nuestras vidas. Hoy, celebramos todo lo que es santo y bueno en nuestro mundo, especialmente a las personas cuyas vidas nos inspiran a seguir a Cristo. Los santos son mayordomos de santidad: los pobres, los humildes, los pacificadores así como los mártires y los puros de corazón. ¡Sin los santos, no habría ningún testigo, ninguna predicación, ni Biblia y ni Iglesia! Con los santos como nuestro testigo, aprendemos a seguir a Cristo en nuestras vidas. La Conmemoración de mañana de Todos Los Fieles Difuntos nos recuerda la verdad central del Cristianismo: resucitaremos con Cristo. Aunque lloramos a nuestros queridos difuntos, también sabemos que no hay ninguna muerte duradera para aquellos que creen. Nuestra mayor bendición no se encuentra en la tierra; sólo puede encontrarse en los brazos de Dios.

SHRINES AND CANDLES

A beautiful and moving part of our faith is the lighting of candles as we pray for a loved one or ourselves in time of need. Often, we light candles in memory of those who have passed away, and many others light candles when they have a petition to present to God on behalf of themselves or someone else. The lit candle symbolizes our prayer standing before God long after we are too exhausted to remain at the shrine to pray. Our Lady of Mercy offers people the chance to purchase “five day” candles to place in one of our statue niches as you make your prayer to God. You can also bring these candles home to use. You can purchase these candles from the St. Jude store in the back of the church which is toward the right hand side as you enter. When the store is not open, the ushers will be happy to sell the candles to you.

SAFETY FIRST! In order to maintain fire safety standards, the parish is taking a number of steps to make sure that lit candles do not create a hazard. First, where there is most danger of fire, electric vigil lights will be installed. The shrines for Our Lady of Guadalupe and Our Lady of the Clouds will have electric vigil lights. You may still use a real candle, but it must be placed in the Baptistery area on an approved candle stand. We will be installing new and larger candle stands where candles may be placed near the various shrines and statues in the Baptistery and the other shrines in the church. We will no longer allow candles to be placed at the foot of a statue, on the pedestal holding the statue or on the floor. If a candle is found at the base of a statue or on the floor, it will be removed immediately. We have already endured one fire and will try our best to eliminate the possibility of a second statue fire. Candles purchased at other stores will also be removed as the glass in these candles is often weak and breaks from the heat. Children should be watched when near candles. When it comes to fire, please think of safety first!

SANTUARIOS Y VELAS Una pieza hermosa y emotiva de nuestra fe es el encendimiento de velas cuando rezamos por un ser querido o por nosotros mismos en tiempo de necesidad. Nuestra Señora de la Merced le ofrece a la gente la oportunidad de comprar “velas de cinco días” para colocarlas en uno de los nichitos de nuestras estatuas mientras que usted le hace su oración a Dios. Usted puede también llevarse las velas a su casa. Usted puede comprar estas velas en la tienda San Judas localizada en la parte posterior de la iglesia que está hacia el lado derecho cuando entra al templo. Cuando la tienda no está abierta, los ujieres estarán felices de venderles las velas .

¡PRIMERO: SEGURIDAD! Para mantener normas de seguridad para prevención de fuego, la parroquia esta tomando un número de pasos a seguir para cerciorarse de que las velas encendidas no provoquen un peligro. Primero, donde hay mayor riesgo de incendio, velas eléctricas serán instaladas. Los santuarios de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe y de Nuestra Señora de la Nube tendrán velas eléctricas. Usted también podrá usar una vela verdadera, pero debe ser colocada en el área de Bautizos con estantes de velas aprobados. Instalaremos

nuevos y más grandes estantes de velas donde las velas se puedan poner cerca de los varios santuarios y estatuas en el Bautisterio y en las otros santuarios en la iglesia. Ya no se permitirán más velas al pie de una estatua, en el pedestal que sostiene la estatua o en el piso. Si una vela se encuentra en la base de una estatua o en el piso, será quitada inmediatamente. Ya hemos experimentado un fuego e intentaremos lo mejor posible de eliminar la

posibilidad de un segundo incendio de una estatua. Las velas compradas en otros lugares también serán quitadas pues el cristal en estas velas es a menudo frágil y se rompe por lo caliente. Los niños deben ser cuidados cuando estén cerca de las velas. ¡Cuando se refiera a incendios, por favor piense primero en seguridad!

ARE YOU BEING CALLED BY GOD? In this Year for Religious Life, we recognize everyone who has answered the call to serve God by dedicating their lives as priests, sisters and religious brothers. Many young people are afraid to accept their vocation because parents and other adults often tell them it is a BIG commitment. Then, after many years in an unfulfilling job and struggling to ignore God’s call, they often enter later in life and are glad that they finally listened to God’s voice. As a community, we should be more supportive and encourage our young people to know that if they do make this BIG commitment, we will be there to support them and love them as priests, brothers and sisters. And if they study many years and choose not to enter religious life? We will still support them and love them because they listened and tried!
