Dear Friends,
As we focus our attention on our Eucharistic lives this November, inviting you to consider deepening your relationship with Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament through Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration, we must first acknowledge how truly blessed we are here at Our Lady of Peace. We enjoy the availability of our Lord at all hours of the day or night! Sometimes, however, “business as usual” can lead to taking things for granted. It can produce within us an attitude such as: “yeah, I know the Lord is there in the Church,” but I have to tend to these things first, then I will give Him some time later on (take a look at Lk 14:15-24 for Jesus’s thoughts on this approach). This type of approach to friendship can be presumptuous—taking for granted the invitation and/or presence of another. Is this the case for me? I would like to turn to two accounts where business was far from usual and nothing taken for granted. It reveals to us great love of Jesus, our Eucharistic Lord, in its truest and simplest forms.
The first is the well-known story that admittedly prompted Venerable Fulton Sheen to make a daily Holy Hour. The story of a young Chinese girl of eleven years of age. The events occurred when the Communists took over China, they imprisoned a priest in his own rectory near the Church, confining him to house arrest. From there the priest witnessed the desecration of the Church. Breaking into the tabernacle they took out the ciborium and threw it on the floor. He knew that there had been thirty-two consecrated hosts in the tabernacle.
When the Communists left, they did not see an eleven year old girl who was praying at the back of the church, and the guards either did not see her or else paid no attention to her. She returned to the Church that night and made a Holy Hour (an act of reparation and love) and then consumed one of the sacred hosts, bending down to receive Jesus on her tongue, because it was not permissible to touch the Sacred Host with the hand. She continued to return every night, making a nightly Holy Hour and consuming one sacred host. Unfortunately, on the last night, the thirty-second night, a guard was awakened after she consumed the sacred host. He chased her, grabbed her, and beat her to death with his rifle.
Fulton Sheen became aware of her martyrdom while he was a seminarian. He was so truly moved by this account that he promised to make a holy hour before the Blessed Sacrament each day for the rest of his life. Her actions were a matter of life or death. If this little child could give testimony and witness to the world about the real and wonderful Presence of Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament, then Venerable Fulton Sheen was compelled according to goodness and truth, to do the same.
The second example comes from the war torn city of Aleppo in Syria, which was related to me by one of our very own IVE missionaries: Fr. Rodrigo Miranda (who passed through OLOP a few months back). Fr. Miranda worked in the Latin-rite Cathedral in Allepo for 10 years throughout the war. The testimony of these Christians is something absolutely heroic and compelling, but very simple. They would say: “Father, before the war we were distracted with many things, now we know the one thing that is important is our Faith in Jesus, and we are happier now than ever.”
Amidst the many appalling and horrific events that transpired during the war, the Christians gathered in communion around our Eucharistic Lord. The simple, yet profound, evening schedule for the Christians was to go to the Church, celebrate the Holy Mass, spend an hour with the Lord in Eucharistic Adoration, pray the Rosary & Evening Prayer together and close with some fellowship (time spent together in Christian Charity). The Syrians themselves admitted to their priest that before the war, they were concerned with many things of this world, but now they were only concerned with the next and Jesus Christ present in the Eucharist was truly and finally the source and summit of their Christian existence. Their days (Continued on Page 3)
Thirty-second Sunday in Ordinary Time Page 3
and their lives centered around their communion with God and brethren in the Eucharist.
Let us return to the simple question that was posed last week: “Would you watch one hour with Me?” The humility of this request ought to captivate us. We who are so often hardened and distracted by the world, have a gentle and loving God who wants to spend time in a loving exchange with those He has so wonderfully made. Perhaps, rather than simply saying, “Sure, I guess I can squeeze in an hour for You,” it is more proper for us to turn to Him on bended knee down in humble adoration and praise, truly saying: “My God, I believe, I adore, I trust and I love You!”
Mary, Our Lady of Peace, pray for us,
Fr. Brian
In the Mass and in Eucharistic Adoration we meet the merciful love of God that passes through the Heart of Jesus Christ.—Pope St. John Paul II
Are You a Registered Parishioner?
If you attend Mass here regularly, we encourage you to register as a member of Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church.
Three main reasons why registering is important: 1. If we as a parish do not know who is out there, how can we serve the needs of all? This includes single people or young families who may not see the need to register. 2. Registering in the parish makes Sacrament prep easier when the time comes. Infant baptisms, religious education registration, being a godparent/sponsor for baptisms or confirmations, and especially getting married whether you are getting married at this parish, another parish, or having an international Catholic wedding. If you’re not a registered parish-ioner, this will greatly delay the process. 3. Letters of Recommendation Sometimes there are occasions where letters of recommendations are needed from your parish pastor (ie Catholic school enrollment, scholarships, godparent eligibility, etc.). If you’re not registered, we cannot provide this letter to you or your family.
Anyone, regardless of where they live (and even though the Diocese is divided into parish geographical areas), is welcome to register at OLOP. Please note: there is a three (3) month waiting period from the date of registration before being considered a full-fledged registered parishioner. Any requests for pas-tor signatures on any forms, letters, or wedding preparation paperwork will not be processed within the 3 months.
Registering is easy! Visit the Parish Office, call the Rectory Office (408-988-4585)
or email us ([email protected]) to request a registration form.

Olivewood handcrafted from the Holy Land A Traditional Art and Livelihood for the Holy Land Christians
The olivewood carving industries has evolved as a cultural tradition of the Christians over many centu-
ries. Many Holy Land Christians in the Bethlehem area alone rely upon income generated from this art form. The items are carved by local craftsmen.
Many families are facing critical situations. Without income, many craftsmen and families leave their traditional trade and emigrate with their families to find relief from the difficult conditions of their Homeland. Christian presence in the Holy Land has extended from the Pentecost to the present. 60 years ago, Christians represented more than 28% of the population and now represent less than 2%.The loss of Christians in the land of Christianity’s birth will represent a tragedy of immeasurable proportions for the billions of Christians worldwide.
Thank you for your vital support for a Christian Tradition and in protecting this very important culture and industry.
