Our Pastor Writes... By: Pastor Rob Armstrong

Thank you for the love and encouragement you have shown to my family and the rest of our ministerial staff during October. The special night of prayer was one of the most precious gifts you could ever give to us. The cards you took the time to write are a blessing, especially the ones from the children!

I am greatly encouraged at the testimonies of how the Lord is working in our church each week. During the month of October we have experienced great times of worship in our Sunday morning and Sunday night gatherings. Through His Word, God is leading us to be more like Jesus Christ as we study through James and respond to the leading of the Holy Spirit. If you haven’t been with us much in the last month, you can catch up with our sermon series online, and pick up with us this next week at 8:30am or 11:00am.

During the month of November there are several special emphases at Harrisburg. On November 3-5, 2017 we are focusing on missions. Harrisburg has partnered with Global Outreach to sponsor a conference entitled: “Made for Mission.” This

conference is right on track with what the Bible says about the life of each Christian, and it fits with the direction that God is directing through the leadership of John Gordon and our Missions Committee. The conference is free and open to anyone in our church and community. I hope you will take advantage of this by being present. You can find out more in this newsletter and online. I am excited to announce that we will be joining in the national Orphan Sunday on November 12, 2017. On Orphan Sunday we will join Christians all over our country and stand for the orphans in our country and all around the world. As Christians, we are to follow the command in Isaiah 1:17 to “defend the cause of the fatherless.” God has called us to defend the fatherless, to care for children who have no families, and to visit orphans in their distress. This special Sunday serves to equip each of us with a biblical understanding of adoption, and to see how our adoption into the family of God leads us to be involved in praying, supporting, fostering, and adopting. Our special guest preacher for both morning services on November 12, 2017 is a good friend of mine, Dr. Todd Brady. He is the Vice President for University Ministries and Assistant Professor of Ministry at Union University in Jackson, TN. In addition to various roles within the university Todd has served as a pastor and staff member in the local church. Todd and his wife, Amy founded Adoption and Family Matters- an organization for families who are pursuing family through adoption. They are the parents to 5 sons: Jack (12), William (10), Isaac (8), Benjamin (7) and Miller (3). I look forward to seeing you this next week on Sunday or Wednesday, and don’t forget to bring your Operation Christmas Child boxes on November 12. Make plans to be present at 5:00pm that day to support our children as they present their musical and we pray for Operation Christmas Child. You are a great church, and I am ever thankful to the Lord that I am your pastor.

By His Grace,Pastor Rob

Lottie Moon Christmas Offering

Starting in 1888, the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering® was established to empower the international missions efforts for Southern Baptists. After more than a century, the annual offering continues its steady growth. Your giving enables missionaries to be sent to make disciples and multiply churches among unreached peoples and places for the glory of God. Offering envelopes will be available soon in the pew racks. Please pray and give generously to the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering.

Our next Family Dedication service will be on Sunday, November 19th. As Christian parents, we know that our children are gifts from God, and that we are responsible to God for their Christian nurture. We believe that dedicating our children to be raised to know and love God is a very special thing. Our parent meeting before the service will be on Wednesday night, November 8th, at 6:00. Please contact Angela Mitchell if you would like to participate in Family Dedication or if you have any questions. ([email protected], 397-9025)

Please consider being a volunteer to help keep our babies through three year olds during our morning worship services. This is such a vital ministry, and we would love for you to be a part of it. We have two adults in each room, so maybe your spouse or a friend can volunteer with you. You will only be asked to serve four times a year, one Sunday a quarter, for one morning service. You can choose whether you serve in the early or late service, and you can let us know which age group you would like to work with – babies, ones, twos or threes. Please prayerfully consider becoming an ETC Volunteer! For more information or to volunteer, call Angela Mitchell (823-7124) or Nelda Hartley (823-7110). THANK YOU to those who already serve in ETC! You are such a blessing to our little ones and their families!

STUDENT NEWSSTAY CONNECTED WITH THE STUDENT MINISTRY!

With a busy schedule, staying connected can be a challenge. To help everyone stay connected, we ask parents and students to plug into our text system. We use text as a mass info share or reminder. Simply, text HBURG to the short code 84576.

We also use an app called GroupME. It is a free app that is multi-platform and we use it for trips and Sunday School announcements. It is easy to connect and parents are welcome to be in groups but are asked to direct message teachers for more info rather than group chat.

In addition to our text upgrades, we are asking every family to update their information with the church so we can be more effective with our communication. Let’s make sure we have your current e-mail and mobile phone number! Please contact Donna Sharp at 662-842-6917 to update your information!

CALLING ALL HARRISBURG PARENTS OF BOYS AGES 5-17: Its not too late to JOIN THE TRAIL! HBC Trail Life Troop 33 invites any and all parents interested in learning more about Trail Life to attend one of our regular meetings, generally held every other Monday night at 6:30 p.m. in The Lodge. Trail Life USA is about building Character, ex-periencing Adventure, and growing Leadership in boys through a Christ-centered outdoor curriculum. Programs are tailor-made for boys ages 5 – 17; awards can be earned throughout the program and the best of the best may be able to earn Trail Life’s highest honor: The Freedom Award.

Troop 33 is also looking for adults to fulfill several key leadership positions. If spending more time with your son(s) is a goal for you, and hectic schedules are just not allowing, please prayerfully consider setting aside time to explore what Trail Life USA can offer your family. Troop 33 is a ministry of Harrisburg Baptist Church and while you may be looking for a program to help challenge your boy(s) to become faithful, trained young men; there are perhaps other boys who need father figures in their lives to help them along the same Trail Life. If you are inter-ested in becoming a leader, please see Trail Life leaders Opie Hurst or Scott Williams; or see Paul Backstrom for further details.
